Near faultless Sunday Roast with best Yorkshire and cauliflower cheese ever! High quality ingredients professionally prepared and delivered with attentive service in a lovely setting. Good portion size and overall great value too. Lovely experience we will be going again!

Booked for 1400 but got there 1330 for Friday lunch. Booking was a little unnecessary as I was the only customer! Was shown to my table and staff provided water quite quickly. Ordered the Scallops as the starter. Reasonable sauce with two scallops and a little bit of pork belly. Main was sea bass and was delicious, unquestionably the highlight. Dessert was a cinnamon creme brulee with apple tart a slightly odd combination! The apple tart was nice pastry with thin slivers of apple on the top. The ceme brulee had two issues, firstly the brulee was slightly burnt so a little bitter and the creme was a little too sou like rather than set. Waitress left me the sauce for the scallops to serve myself. The service was perfectly reasonable, but no real engagement. There were people over the otherwise of the venue having a loud business conversation with staff members, it sounded like, no music to listen to just the chat. Toilets exceptional for the grade of venue. Much promise not fully realised I guess

We recently enjoyed a five-night stay at the Angel Inn, having stayed there several times before. There were some noticeable improvements since our last stay; the restaurant menu has been completely changed reverting back to the type which was in place before the building was totally restored during the Covid years. Gone is the ‘Top Dining’ style and now there is a really good affordable restaurant menu as before. With a busier restaurant the ambience has changed for the better which adds to the dining experience. The rooms are very well appointed with a much-improved breakfast menu which all adds up to a perfect break.

We had a lovely evening after hearing so much about it. The odd negative review didn't put us off and we were not disappointed! We had a very warm welcome and as soon as we sat down and until the end of the evening we had very attentive staff and it was on a Friday night too so it was very busy. I had a delicious Double baked smoked haddock and cheese soufflé which was delicious followed by the bream which again was yummy with crispy skin and flaky fish with a tasty lobster bisque. My husband had the chicken parfait and then steak which was cooked to perfection and we then shared a fig frangipani tart with a fig ice cream. Fab ending to a lovely evening. Prices were in line with many of the establishments in this area. It’s not your average pub meal so don’t go expecting that, but for a date night or something special or you want more than a steak pie and chips then this is the place to go!

We decided to visit the Angel for a wedding anniversary and having seen the reviews and not having been there for a few years we were very much looking forward to it. A big mistake! The restaurant was very quiet when we arrived and for the rest of the evening which we found strange. In short the service was OK (young girls with no real training but very friendly) but the food was an expensive let-down. Starters were just about OK although the Maldon smoked salmon was just a big blob of dry-looking slices with tasteless foam blobs to add to the visual appeal. A door-stop slab of warm soda bread came with it. However, the two fish dishes were a real disappointment. My cod lozenge was tasteless and over-cooked (potato puree was good though) The sauce also tasteless. My wife's bream was also over-cooked and the seafood bisque was so salty that she couldn't eat it and we had to complain. These dishes cost £25 and £28 respectively. The manager said he would 'sort something out' which in reality turned out to be a free scoop of ice cream or a free coffee. He refused to take the bream off the bill. And so we left - two unhappy customers and for the wine (overpriced too) £144 lighter. Not sure what went wrong in the kitchen but the two dishes we had were pretentious, tasteless examples of how not to prepare a fish dish. Needless to say we will not return.

We absolutely loved our stay at the Angel Inn. We stayed in Tye room, which was gorgeous. A lovely big bed, separate bath and shower, coffee machine and tv. It was very quiet and we slept really well. The air conditioning was very effective. Dinner was exceptional. We both finished every bit of our 3 courses. Breakfast was lovely. We ate outside in the beautiful courtyard/garden. Croissants and juice and then hot food from the menu. It was all beautifully presented and tasty. We couldn’t find a fault with anything during our stay. Staff were fantastic, the hotel is beautifully decorated and we felt very comfortable. We would highly recommend the hotel to couples looking for a quiet and relaxing get away.

We booked in for a night and reserved a table at the restaurant. Whist the room was lovely and so were the staff the overall experience was far from expected. Considering we paid over £300 for the room and an evening meal. The wait times were quite astonishing. For a 3 course meal it took close/over 2 hours. I approached the staff asking what was the delay and was greeted with "this is how long it takes. We having problems in the kitchen" at no point was this relayed it guests. I was also served the wrong dish. Me stating "this is not what I ordered and the reply was "ohh" considering this establishment prides itself on HIGH QUALITY consumer service, we didn't receive much of that. The staff were lovely and friendly, but the overall experience of a "5 star" dining experience was far from it.

Exemplary culinary standards as always combined with warm service! This was one of a number of times I have dined at The Angel since it underwent its transformation from a traditional Inn to the more ‘up market’ venue that it is has since become. I have to admit that on this occasion I was coaxed by the appearance of ‘Sunday roast’ on the menu - albeit served in the style that is customary at this restaurant. There were a couple of tiny issues with my reservation - no fault of the The Angel as they use 3rd party reservation services similar to others - but I thought it worth mentioning since it’s not the issues but the way the restaurant dealt with it. They were very apologetic, quick to resolve matters and certainly showed they cared. In terms of the Sunday roast, this was a level above those I’ve typically had elsewhere and although dining alone, the amount of food was plentiful and enough for two people. In one word, it was delicious as well as beautifully presented. I’ve reviewed this restaurant in the past. Notably, the team here is new to me and I’d say they are much more engaging, a little less formal but undoubtedly very attentive, respectful and diligent. Before doing this review I also read some of the others here on Tripadvisor - particularly those giving low ratings as it’s always interesting to get a balanced view. Having been a diner at this restaurant well over 100 times past and present, undoubtedly some of the low ratings are hard to understand - some of which have compared The Angel with other busy pubs and eating houses in the County and/or felt it was highly priced. The Angel - particularly in its new format - is certainly by comparison a very select and fine dining experience clearly aimed at quality over quantity and reassuringly, sets it apart from the rest. If you want somewhere away from the hustle and bustle that’s as much an experience as it is a pleasure then The Angel absolutely ranks high. I would be proud to take any guests to dinner here knowing they’d love the food and the experience.

We went to the Angel for our anniversary dinner and treated ourselves to an overnight stay. Our dinner was delicious- we both chose the steak which was cooked as we liked it and was very good. I chose three cheeses for desert which were just the right temperature and a good selection to choose from (too many restaurants have a very unimaginative selection which they then kill completely by taking the cheese straight from the fridge… ) Service was excellent and the wine recommendation well made. Our room for the night was well appointed and had everything you could want including some lovely biscuits and fudge to go with an afternoon cup of tea. Our only comment here would be to add a fixture for the smaller shower head in the corner of the shower so it doesn’t take up as much space in the shower cubicle. Breakfast was also excellent although the French streaky bacon wasn’t quite what we expected but that’s our taste not the quality of what was offered. All in all a lovely stay and we look forward to make this a regular ‘treat’!

Brilliant! We had a Sunday night evening meal, overnight stay and breakfast Monday morning. What a great time we had. Started early evening with fantastic Spanish Margarita's, amazing flavour. Then we had a fantastic 3 course meal with extra tasty amuse bouche in between. We also enjoyed a very good bottle of french Sauvignon Blanc. Then off to a luxury room for our overnight stay, beautiful and comfortable. Finally an excellent continental breakfast of fresh fruit, granola, greek yogurt, home baked bread, butter and jam as well as croissant, orange juice and great coffee. All very good. We really enjoyed ourselves and the special offer package made it good value too. Thanks to everyone!

Meant to write this review ages ago - 6 of us stayed and ate and drank exceptional food and drink. Could not fault the food, the service or rooms. Made to feel welcome from the initial enquiry to us having a small wedding party on the hottest day of 2023. The staff go out of their way to make sure that your stay is enjoyable - it exceeded our expectations. Room was spotlessly clean, gorgeous fresh linen and bath robes The rooms have been freshly refurbished with heavy black-out curtains, privacy blinds, air-conditioning & Nespresso machine. We especially appreciated fresh milk and a treat of home-made wedding heart biscuits and fudge in the room. Cocktails were exquisite. . The full tasting menu for our party and the Wine flight were unbelievably presented with discrete yet friendly service and the dish and wine knowledge was better than Gavroche. English sparkling wine with our amuse bouche set the scene Everything was utter perfection. I cannot recommend this place more highly. The quality of the food and level of service is second to none. The imaginative menu , the aesthetically pleasing way the food was presented and very delicious too. A very knowledgeable and attentive (at exactly the right level) waitress. Expensive? At the right level- you don’t get food at this level for a tenner BUT it was reassuringly expensive without making you feel hard done by. We regularly go out for dinner but most of the time end up quite disappointed. A lot of places seem to talk a good menu and charge very well for it but when it comes to it, can’t actually deliver. Not the case here - each course was exceptionally well put together, done with care, attention and flare. It really felt like going out for dinner rather than eating something you could make yourself at home for less than quarter of the price. Lots of new things and combinations we hadn’t tried before and the perfect amount of food over a 7 course taster menu to ensure you leave full but not sick! Lovely wine but particular mention for the Spanish margarita cocktail - probably the best margarita I’ve ever had and they are my favourite so I’ve had a lot of them! Lovely service and restaurant throughout. Be prepared to spend money as it’s not cheap but if you’re looking for somewhere where you walk away feeling as though you’ve really had something special go and try it! Ps the sourdough bread with butter is to die for!

My wife and I popped in to have a quick drink last Sunday at 1pm. We ordered a glass of wine and a pint of lager, they only had one beer on draught! The place was very nicely decorated but what we found strange was it was nearly empty. Only about 2/3 covers in a big pub. This was a beautiful sunny afternoon at peak lunch service time and no one was eating or drinking! The garden was empty apart from us. We ordered our drinks and sat in the garden. When I went to pay I was asked for £20.50 for 1 glass of wine and a pint of beer!!! I laughed and said I only had 1 of each not 2 but they were being serious. They do not offer traditional Sunday lunch. They only offer a tasting menu which starts at £49 for 2 courses! I admire their audacity but this is Suffolk and you can go over the road to the fantastic Crown pub and enjoy a proper roast dinner and a good selection of beers and ales without paying through the nose. If you are thinking of going, be prepared to spend a lot of money! We really wanted to like the Angel and remember it fondly from years gone by but it’s now trying to chase a market which I do not believe is present in Stoke-by-Nayland or the surrounding area. Don’t get me wrong, we like good food and wine and there is money in Suffolk/Essex but not many of these people like to be taken advantage of and I fear this is what is happening at The Angel. When we left we drove past The Crown and The Anchor in Nayland and both were heaving with people!

I’ve made The Angel Inn one of those restaurants I return to whenever the opportunity presents itself. Recently they have introduced a new menu full of very creative and delicious courses. I found it hard to believe that they could improve on the wonderful dishes they had before but they have! As well as great food another aspect stands out and that is the consistently high service. Sitting near the bar area as I did one evening I heard more than one customer commenting on the service being some of the best they have received - it’s clearly not just me then!! - hence I felt it was worthy of mention. With the winter coming and the open fire being lit on these dark often damp evenings, I can’t wait to return for another lovely meal.

We last ate at The Angel many years ago but thought it was about time we revisted it. The place is still as quaint as it ever was. I was very impressed with the service we received. I have an allergy to egg and the waitress made sure that I was able to enjoy my meal without any worry. The chef adapted my starter, the garlic mushrooms, and it was delicious. My main was the steak, again cooked to perfection. The chips that came with it were the best I have eaten in a long time! My husband had the whitebait to start with, followed by the Suffolk sausage and mash. Again, these were perfectly cooked and well presented. We both went for the passion fruit cheesecake for dessert. It was to die for! All the way through the service was impeccable. Staff were helpful, friendly and made sure tables were cleared of plates with great care. Would thoroughly recommend and we will certainly be back!

The ambience of the pub/restaurant, the welcoming staff, the service, the food and the overall cost could not be faulted. We had two dogs with us and they accommodated them with no fuss whatsoever. The food was so delicious. We will certainly be back when we are next in the area.

Went there on a Sunday evening, as soon as you step in you can feel a very peaceful and relaxing location. The outdoor patio is personally just beautiful.

Visited on a Saturday evening, had pre booked and glad we did as restaurant was busy. Despite that there was a warm welcome and shown to table. Service of drinks order was prompt and all the staff are friendly and attentive. Food was lovely and well presented. My liver dish was perfectly cooked with crushed potatoes and nice crunchy bacon which added texture. My wife said her sea bass was equally good. The premises themselves are delightful. Real ale at the bar and 250ml wine served in a small carafe gives a touch of style. Looking forward to next visit.

If the food was good, the friendly attentive service was even better. The menu offered a reasonably broad selection to suit most tastes, and the olde English atmosphere of this listed inn completed our enjoyment.

I have a thing about liver. I like it to taste like liver which requires it to be pink, being pink should make it almost melt-in-the-mouth, but this only happens if it is cut thick enough to be succulent. Mine was probably the best that I have been served anywhere. We all had different meals and there were no complaints from anyone.

My wife and I stopped at this inn for a simple lunch on our way back home. The exterior is quite ordinary and not particularly inspiring, on the contrary the interiors are welcoming and comfortable: rustic, but elegant, without being pretentious. The menu is quite varied, there is a small cellar. We started with lemon and coriander hummus and tzatziki, both freshly homemade and tasty, served with warm pitta bread. Then we had a Portobello mushroom burger, with stilton and tomato chutney, coleslaw and fries as a side, and a Lamb burger with halloumi, coleslaw and sweet potato fries as a side. Everything was excellent. The service was kind and attentive. Recommended.

After visiting Flatford we looked for somewhere to have lunch We came across the Angel Inn in Stoke by Nayland. Entering through the front door we were greated with a friendly smile and asked if we had booked. Although the answer was no we could sit anywhere without a reserved notice.

A genuine old coaching house, now a pub restaurant with 6 rooms. We had a very enjoyable restaurant meal in the evening, good wine list. Room 6 is quickly but clean with a very comfortable bed. Excellent breakfast in the well room. Good value for money and thank you Becky for making us feel welcome.

First visit here and will certainly be returning. Lovely atmosphere and good service. Different types of seats available, big comfy chairs to relax in or more upright chairs. Nice beer and a good menu. The sandwiches were really nice and were served with chips and a crunchy coleslaw, great value at £8.

We have visited this pub a few times just lately and I felt like I needed to give them a review. Last night we went on a last minute idea for Father’s Day and we were lucky enough to get a table. The food was amazing, we had a roast with all the trimmings. The food was hot like it was all freshly cooked, the vegetables are gorgeous and they even managed to do me broccoli cheese as they had run out of cauliflower. We were well looked after asking if everything was ok and drinks being topped up. I highly recommend this as a place to eat.

My wife and I are at the Angel Inn on the evening of Easter Sunday. We had the best meal we’d had for a long time. We both chose Roast Chicken which was juicy and succulent and came with plenty of vegetables. Although we were quite full we managed to follow this with two super deserts- strawberry cheesecake and sticky toffee pudding. Lovely service as well. Couldn’t fault it.

We had Camembert to start but served with wedges of toasted break and homemade relish, was beautiful followed by skate for main meal which was the best we have ever had, cooked to perfection in lemon and garlic butter with wilted spinach and tiny croutons. exquisite. Chocolate brownie to die for. All in all very impressed, best meal we have had for a long time and staff are very friendly and obliging. Would definitely recommend and will be revisiting

The building is comfortable and interesting, the service attentive and the food excellent. I had chicken liver parfait followed by liver and bacon, an old staple that my wife simply won't cook, and it was just right. A good wine list with a supplementary list of fine bottles for those with larger budgets.

A lovely unpretentious pub in a beautiful village with super friendly landlady and staff. Our group of 13 people fit perfectly in the panelled front parlour. There was a good range of lunch options, including roast beef and roast pork (it was a Sunday). Very generous portions.
