We have been talking about going to The Peacock for a long time, so looking for somewhere different for my partners birthday. I decided to book a table, and while on the website saw that we could stay overnight and that dogs are welcome! On line booking was very easy, and following instruction from the booking confirmation, I rang to double check there was room in the dog friendly area of the restaurant. Once confirmed, I was reassured that even though my dog is a giant breed, that we would be very welcome. On arrival Jack, the General Manager, greeted us and showed us to our garden room. Lovely modern, clean, bright bedroom with en-suite. A good range of tea, coffee and biscuits were also available. We sat in the garden in the sunshine, and again the warmth and friendliness from both Jack and his Team was exceptional. For Dinner, we chose to experience the Tasting Menu. It was such an amazing experience. We were genuinely blown away. Each next dish we declared as our favourite. The produce was fresh and local, and cooked to perfection. We were given an over view of each dish before we ate, which we loved. At the end of our meal, the Chef came to our table to ask our opinions on the menu, we really felt that he, and all the team, genuinely wanted us to enjoy our experience. The whole Team were also very laid back with our dog, even as he relaxed and spread out a little too much! We enjoyed a good nights sleep and then went for a walk over the bridge opposite and up the winding lane. We bought eggs and honey from a stall outside a farm house! We returned and then enjoyed a very tasty breakfast, again with all local produce. We will definitely come back, and recommend to friends. We are already planning our next visit!

Sublime! Possibly the best food we’ve eaten in Suffolk and as good as many a Michelin ⭐️ establishment. From Jack the Maitre D to Sam and his brigade in the kitchen, the team are excellent. We had booked a table for two and on arrival decided to try the tasting menu. What a treat!!! The food was excellent; exciting and innovative with superb presentation and explanation. The Peacock deserves much success and acclaim! Do go if you haven’t you won’t be disappointed.

We have often passed this pub on trips from home to Sudbury and commented that we must try it. We finally booked for the Valentine's tasting dinner and it was a great decision. Beautiful little pub, outstanding food, and exemplary service, delivered in the most friendly and welcoming manner. Didn't expect 'fine dining' in a tiny village in the depths of Suffolk. A bonus - many venues tout the fact that they are dog-friendly but the experience fails to match the description. Here, well-behaved dogs are truly welcome. I have no idea what the owners ambitions are but we can see this as a significant 'destination' restaurant if this quality is maintained - we just hope it doesn't get too popular for us to get a reservation, as we intend to return on a fairly regular basis.

Very pleasant surroundings and comfortable pub. Staff friendly and helpful. Battered hake tasty but tiny, plenty of delicious home made chips and mushy peas. One of our party had hake (small) with a mussel veloute sauce (4 small mussels )with a piece of leek,. The pomanna potato was not traditional stack just a couple of slices under the fish. Tasty but small. The steak was ok nothing special. All in all a pleasant lunch but small portions and overpriced.

I would have rated our Sunday Lunch experience as excellent if only the delicious meal had been served with a selection of vegetables other than the half a carrot, a slither of parsnip and a few kale leaves that came with the meal. Any other vegetables had to be paid for as an extra. Surely a Sunday Lunch should come with a decent dish of vegetables. Such a shame that such an excellent meal is spoilt by penny pinching.

This was our second visit, the first having been a success. This one, however, definitely wasn't. Upon arrival it became apparent they'd lost our booking (which I'd received confirmation of by email) and so we had to stand around while they sorted a table out (which was an issue because my elderly mother struggles to stand but no-one seemed interested in that). Last time, my husband had the roast beef and asked for it to be medium rather than pink as it usually comes out. It wasn't a problem and was done to my husband's liking. This time, however, when he asked for his beef to be medium he was told it wasn't possible - it would either have to be pink or well done. He said well done would be OK rather that than pink (in his opinion), and my mother had the same, however for "well done" read "cremated"!! It was so "well done" that the meat was blackened, dry and curled up at the edge. Furthermore, our Yorkies were equally cremated ... they were so brittle they just crumbled and fell apart when cut. When we mentioned the Yorkies we received a very insincere apology. Needless to say we won't be wasting our money going there again!

Four of us enjoyed a wonderful Sunday lunch at the Peacock Inn Chelsworth. When looking for somewhere for two couples to meet up for a chat over lunch this was recommended to us with the proviso that it wasn’t cheap. Three courses off the Sunday lunch menu were £28 so I felt it was good value for money. The food was excellent and no pressure to turn tables either. Why four and not five? The initial welcome we received was excellent but the service once at our table lacked the finesse that the food and location demanded. I understand the desire to catch up with the latest news from your friends but not at the expense of keeping an eye on your tables and preempting their needs. Also a separate vegetarian/vegan menu would help. We will return, it might be five next time.

Had a good lunch a while back, so thought we would give it another go before Christmas to support our local pubs. Unfortunately found the food very basic. The turkey was one slice with stuffing in middle, bit like a Bernard Matthews. Frozen veg, the sprouts were uncooked! The nut roast was like a little pastie. The whole meal was not the sort of thing you would expect a trained chef to produce. Unfortunately this is why a lot of pubs do not survive.

Your locationPeacock Inn ChelsworthThe Peacock Inn, 37 The St, Chelsworth, Ipswich IP7 7HUPubKeith Brown6405 points 9 hours agoAbsolutely disgraceful. The staff were young and completely untrained. Owned by an absent financier and one other with a resident manager. The ordered Gin (Sipsmith) and Tonics came to the table pre mixed, so any brand of Gin could have been used. I sent mine back to be presented correctly. The replaced drink could not be equated to my experience of Sipsmith gin. The main course of Haunch of Venison was ordered and again no enquiry as to how it should be cooked was made by the staff. It came almost uncooked and with absolutely no flavour whatsoever! Confirmed by the other guest who had ordered the same plate. The wine was good but at £37 it was not good value. My host had to pay £150 for 3 people to have an extremely poor experience and only 2 courses each, was extortion. It has been awhile since we’ve been to the Peacock, but since its refurbishment we thought we would give it a go. It is in a much better state of repair, the garden is lovely and inside the pub has been very tastefully restored. A lovely atmosphere. However, the beer is very expensive compared to the local average price of a real ale pint in some of the other local pubs. If you’re down from London, it probably appears to be cheap, but it is now as expensive as some of the fancy pubs in Lavenham.

We were booked to stay at the Peacock Inn for a weekend, as we were attending a wedding nearby. First and foremost the staff at the Peacock are all amazing. Very friendly, helpful and provided excellent customer service. The Peacock is a very old and traditional pub/restaurant, which does explain away some of the older features and uneven floors. The pub and restaurant are quite charming and made for a very pleasant evening on our first night. We stayed above the pub in the rooms upstairs and others in our party stayed in the chalets outside. The chalets are lovely. Very modern, very clean with a lovely en-suite. Unfortunately the rooms upstairs, although very charming and traditional, were not up to the same standard. None of them are en suite, which isn’t necessarily an issue, but out of the two shared bathrooms, only one had a shower. Both bathrooms had a wonderful selection of complimentary toiletries and extra towels if needed. There was also an extra single toilet. So that would be enough if all 5 rooms were booked, but not ideal. I don’t think our room had been used in a while as it was very dusty behind the room furniture, with lots of cobwebs everywhere, especially on the ceiling beams. I reached behind the bedside table to use the plug socket, and came up with a hand covered in cobwebs. Our room had original windows, which although charming, were not double glazed, so in addition to letting in the cold, they also let in all the noise from the main road. The flooring is very old, uneven and did not keep the noise away from downstairs. I could hear word for word conversations going on in the bar below, and the very lovely clock below chimed very loudly on the hour, so loud that it might as well have been in my room. The heating is on a timer, and when on was very sufficient with keeping the room warm and cosy. Unfortunately when it wasn’t on our room was freezing cold. Everything else in the room was great. Television, kettle and delightful cups, saucers and little teapots. Again I think from not being used in a while, the tea and coffee supplies had not been replenished. I thought my tea tasted odd and discovered that all the UHT milk was two months out of date. Comfy bed, clean bed linen, towels, bathrobes and our room had a little sink, which was appreciated. Our room was also cleaned by housekeeping whilst we were out the following day, which was lovely, although the coffee and tea supplies were still not replenished, so we had to ask for replacements. We had reported the out of date milk that morning. Unfortunately due to the kitchen being at the bottom of the stairs leading to the rooms, and it think possibly the extraction fan being on the roof nearby, the smell of cooking coming from the kitchen was quite overwhelming. Our hair and clothing smelt like fried food. Breakfast was made to order and was delicious. Excellent quality ingredients and very filling. We also ate there on our first evening and found the menu to have a good selection. The food was very served in very generous portions and cooked beautifully. Absolutely no complaints there. I think with a little TLC and attention to detail that the Peacock Inn would make a very warm and charming place to stay. Unfortunately, after our visit I do think that what they are charging per night to stay in the main building is reflective of what the guest is actually getting. The old world charm of the building is not enough to justify the cost per room.

We only had time for a couple drinks but hope to make it back for their Sunday roast - heard the slow cooked lamb and medium rare roast beef are the best choices - last orders are taken at 2:45!There is limited parking just across from the pub so if you are going for a meal plan to get there early. This pub strikes the perfect balance of quaint and comfortable. As you enter you're at the bar with a wood stove and three or four tables. Wind around the chimney to reach the two dining rooms (and a big open hearth) or in fine weather out to the patio tables.Staff were lovely, really welcoming and genuinely friendly.Pub owner Will stopped for a chat as well. This is a pretty but very small village, still worth stretching your legs for 20 minutes if you're waiting for a table or before getting back on the road.

We had a lovely Sunday lunch here a couple of months ago. Staff were friendly, as was the roaring log fire. We had the beef/lamb roast, with a good selection of vegetables. The pub has a wonderful charm, partly due to its amazing collection of items to catch the eye, and a real period feel. We'll certainly return.

After trying two places in Stowmarket without success earlier in the day we drove to Bildeston and spotted The Peacock Inn and thought we'll give this a whirl. Lovely warm atmosphere as soon as we stepped inside and after a short wait for someone to come to the bar, drinks order was taken and executed efficiently and menus handed to us. We were told that ham was no longer available and could be sub'd for other cold meats for either baguettes or the ploughman's. After placing our food orders a few minutes later we were then asked that due to an absence of brie would it be ok to substitute camembert for the brie, to which we agreed. There then followed a glorious 3 cheese Ploughman's, and field mushrooms stuffed with smoked bacon and camembert ( and a sneaky order of cheesy chips). After decimating the mushroom dish I did ask for compliments to be paid to the chef as it was heavenly - and especially applauded the substitution of the cheese as I felt the camembert worked much better with the smoked bacon rather than the brie it should have been with. What a wonderful meal and if I'm out that way at any time I wouldn't hesitate to go again.

We visited Chelsworth and felt like lunch. We chose two ploughman’s. One came after waiting 35minutes. We asked the waitress when the second would arrive. It did some 15minutes later. Unfortunately neither was worth the wait, dry cheese and bread, with just a tiny bit of lettuce. Next time we will go back to The veggie red lion in great bricett were we have eaten before when in the area as it is by far much better food and service.

Called in for lunch. I had the smoked salmon sandwich which was frankly abysmal. Old stale bread, and smoked salmon that was dry at edges. My wife's "home cooked ham" seemed nothing of the sought and was thinly sliced and watery. A polite complaint and the owner / chef took the price of an orange juice off the bill. It would have been more appropriate for the owner /chef to have come and apologised rather than leave it to the pleasant barmaid who was the only redeeming feature of the pub this lunchtime. Should have trusted my first instinct when going into the place and seeing we were the only customers and the chef(?) standing at the bar in what looked like extremely disheveled and unclean kitchen whites/apron. Never again

Ir a tu propio riesgo! ! ! !

Phoned last Sunday late afternoon to see if they did Sunday roast, very friendly and said we could come at 4.30pm, we had a superb roast beef dinner in a warm and very friendly environment, nothing was too much trouble, staff very pleasant and friendly. We also had dessert even though we barely had room for it, absolutely recommend The Peacock, we will be back to enjoy another roast, thank you for making us welcome.

We visited recently for a family meal. The setting and style of this country pub is wonderful. Roaring fires, cosy feel. Good beer. But the food wasn't great. Two of us ordered roast sirloin of beef bit being a Monday it was very obvious is had just been reheated from previous day. Beef was sadly like a piece of leather. Dry roast potatoes. two steaks were totally different, one was nice a good inch thick the second same cut was about 10mm thick, at the price charged that is not good. Puddings were good.

Ok, I'm biased. It's my local pub, but what a great place. Perfect location in the heart of one of the prettiest and most unspoilt villages in the UK. Lovely interior. Open fires, medieval oak beams, very cosy. Simple but varied menu. Excellent chef.

Charming pub, cosy & welcoming, open fire which gave it a lovely Christmasy feel and all the staff were really attentive. My sweet potato soup was very decent however could not taste the chilli as specified. Pork belly had a tasty sauce however where was the crackling?! Sticky toffee pudding decent enough. I gave this place 3 stars as thought it was good all round, food just not quite on par as others nearby hence why I couldn't stretch to 4. But this is a lovely pub & I would recommend visiting for a relaxed evening with good company.

I live on the Suffolk coast but driving into Chelsworth this is one of the most pleasant Suffolk villages I've come across. Walking into the pub was stepping back in time although not cold at the moment the roaring log fire added to the Seasonal spirit, unfortunately my co-workers elected to move into the furthest room away from the fire but the décor throughout was in keeping with the village. Staff were very attentive and my Adnams beer just tasted that bit better than bottled so they can obviously manage the real ale pumps. The menu was concise but all likes were covered and our small party selected varied dishes my own steak suet pie with veg was just the ticket on a winters day and so filling that I didn't want a snack until nine that evening so no issues with the portion size. We all agreed that we would be returning in the near future as good food, pleasant atmosphere and surroundings and attentive staff are getting rare these days as so many village pubs close. This is one village pub that must not go under.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

We have dined at The Peacock on several occasions, and it was on our recommendation that some friends, celebrating a birthday, kindly invited us and a wheel chair bound relation, to Sunday lunch there. We arrived in good time for our reservation, and on request, the publican assisted with the wheel chair up a steep step, and over more smaller ones to gain access. There is no formal means of access incidentally. The publicans wife went into a panic and told us we would have to go the lower level, erroneously thinking that there were two wheelchairs coming into the same space. We suggested a solution and moved two tables together and nearer the door so as not to cause access problems for other customers. Most places would have either apologised or said thanks for sorting it out for them. We then enjoyed the ordered (proper) champagne, and our meal, although we noted no starters or pre nibbles were on offer. Desserts came with custard instead of the ice-cream shown on the menu. On leaving, having paid, we looked around for the publican, or staff to assist with the wheelchair. All had disappeared. We then noticed the publican and wife sitting at the next table behind us. We politely requested assistance to manoeuvre the wheel chair back to street level. The publicans wife said that they were having their lunch, and no they couldn't. The publication then repeated this. Their manner was most rude, and quite obviously were not prepared to help us. Neither of us men have good health, hence our request, but we were left to struggle alone. We had been good customers of theirs on that day alone. None of us has ever known the publican to abandon their customers to their own devices to eat their own food before, anywhere in the world. As stated, we will take our custom to places where it is appreciated. Be warned!

A friend and I went last evening for supper. It was hard to book a table which was a good sign as they are obviously busy. The food was great; plentiful and tasty. The waitress was a little too quick at first to take our food order but then we were left a little too long! I think she was just rushed and both waitresses who attended to us were charming as was the owner who we chatted to after the meal. It isn't cheap so I would say that it is at the dearer end of good British food but it was good value as the food was excellent; well cooked and plentiful. The tables are a little close but it is an old quirky pub so there isn't much they can do. There was a broad customer base with a good vibe. I would especially recommend tourists to visit it as it is quintessential Middle England and good for that too. Chelsworth is a beautiful village so worth a visit for a number of reasons. We were told that they also have accommodation and are building some en-suite guest cottages / rooms. I enjoyed it all and will return a
