The george pub in Babergh

First visit here for quite some time. Very extensive menu, with wide range of different dishes at very reasonable prices. I had the creamy garlic mushroom linguine, with the optional chicken and bacon (10/10), and my wife had the beef and ale pie (8/10). But all in all, very impressed and will definitely come back again. Tuesday night, so fairly quiet, and no issues with getting a table.

Since this place has changed owners it has been my favourite place to go for food and a drink in Hadleigh. Definitely worth popping in if you haven't been for a while.

Amazing customer service, felt welcomed as a family of 4, All the staff we crossed paths with made sure all our needs were met, they even made sure our 5 year old was kept occupied with colouring in sheets and crayons 😊. We all fully enjoyed our meals and making our way through their wine selection. Usually I will pass on a pudding but this time I couldn’t pass up the opportunity, and they didn’t disappoint, I will definitely be back again for the Gooey brownie!! Really disappointed with the service last night. Me & my husband had family visiting from Scotland. After a long say we came in for something to eat and drink, a lady with dark hair who was about to end her shift invited us in to sit down & we all started looking at the menus. We were having a giggle with our auntie about the seniors menu and she took a photo. All of a sudden a young waitress said the lady with dark hair got it wrong and we couldn't stay. The table wasn't reserved! There was maybe one or two other tables occupied so it was confusing. The other 3 or 4 tables that were empty didn't have a reserve sign on so that didn't make any sense. Our auntie has a really bad knee and had just sat down to relax and to eat etc and all of a sudden we were made to feel awkward with no genuine explanation, so we just left. Very disappointed with that, so rude, won't be coming back. We spent a good £250 elsewhere- so up yours. If this is the kind of place it's gonna be since the new owner took over then good luck them and I mean that sarcastically

The staff were pleasant and the main meals were nice. The fish batter was crispy and chips were nice. The service was quite slow, as I don't think they had enough staff to cover front and back. The crumble pudding was disappointing as it tasted slightly artificially was very cold in the middle so not warmed through enough.

Firstly I’d like to say it’s not the staff’s fault for the issues, but their attitude when the issues arose could’ve been better, apologising but then laughing with each other quite obviously about the problems we faced is not how you wish to be treated whilst in a family restaurant. After booking a table and when arriving the restaurant not having our booking noted was the first of our issues, the lack of food available on the menu was also unacceptable and then 40 minutes after our order was taken telling us what we had ordered was also not available now, even though it was apparently at the time of ordering 40 minutes prior. The standard of the food was incredibly disappointing, for example, hard mash potato, tough lamb shank, cold chips etc. My main issue with our experience at the George is that they advertise as a family orientated pub. There is no disabled toilets or baby change, I had to change my 6 month old baby on the toilet floor as well as my 2 year old toddler, that is unacceptable and unhygienic and it really ruined the experience at the George completely. I will not return or recommend. Hopefully comments from myself and others can be taken onboard to improve the service and pub.

I went into the George yesterday for a Sunday roast it was absolutely delicious and service was very fast even through it was a very busy hour the friendly and inviting service I received off the front of house staff was second to none and couldn’t have asked for a more pleasant and relaxed experience Thank you.

The interior of this sizeable place doesn't quite live up to the smart exterior but it's comfy enough despite the fruit machine and TV. Service was very friendly but the food took ages, must have been well over an hour. And it didn't seem all that busy. One of our drinks never arrived either so it did feel a little shambolic. The food - straightforward stuff - was fine. A tasty enough veggie sausage and mash and ultra-cheesy mac and cheese were spot-on for a cold day

Booked table 6hrs beforehand and arrived to not having a table reserved as was told it was busy so the system hadn’t been checked Table was booked for 6:30, and we ordered within around 10-15mins of arrival, and did not receive our main until 8pm Food did taste nice though and cooked well, and staff are friendly so not a total disaster

A great pub to go to for lunch, throughly enjoyed it. They have a non-gluten containing ingredients menu, and this is further helped by a member of the kitchen team who fully understands Coeliac Disease. As a coeliac it was reassuring that I could get Gluten Free meal that had been prepared with consideration of cross contamination. A great find. The member of bar staff who looked after myself and my parents was absolutely brilliant, and added so much to the visit. Thank you.

Staff service excellent. Food very slow waited an hour and only one table in front of us. Order half forgotten but came out separately.

A very friendly pub with staff who make you feel so welcome. Took my dad for lunch to celebrate his 80th birthday. Good food, service with a smile and a nice relaxed atmosphere.

Came here tonight. The waitress was extremely attentive and polite. Even though the tables were reserved the waitress still managed to squeeze us in. The steak we ordered was amazing,cooked to perfection. The whole meal was amazing and not too overpriced. Will be back as soon to try something else off the menu. Hats off to the chef and the waitress.

Came here Boxing Day with my family that were visiting, the food was proper pub food. Everyone finished their meals and were very happy, highly recommend!

First time venturing in to the George for lunch last week.No one seemed to know what they were doing,waited 50 minutes for our meal,to then leave most of it.The steak & ale pie was inedible, would take a hacksaw to get into the pastry,no meat in the pie,just one bit of gristle amongst the gravy.worst meal I've ever had!

Absolutely amazing food and staff, cannot be faulted at all! Newly refurbished and taken over. Husband had salmon fish cakes which he said was the best meal he’d had out in years! I had a mixed grill that was cooked to perfection. All meals where well priced especially the kids meal which where large in portion size! Finished with cocktails :)

Food was really nice once it finally arrived. Came out over a 10min period so i had finished my main before the last dish was delivered. Under staffed plus they take part of an order then slide off do something else then something else no organisation which causes confusion and slow slow service. Shame as won't be returning due to service and organisation.

We thought we'd try the place as it had been newly refurbished. Looks really nice inside. Ambience was a little lacking as there was a draught of cold air circling all night, even though there was a great big fire place that could have been lit to raise the warmth and feel of the place. Our server was lovely and helpful although there were no serviettes on the table and it took a while to receive things despite there being only 4 tables occupied. The food sadly was the most underwhelming. We started with hallloumi, rocket and a honey dip, but it came without rocket. Our meals were nice but the fishcakes were rather bland, only tasted better with the hollandaise sauce and the pasta was too spicy. Hopefully things will pick up as they will continue to find their feet 👍🏻

Thankfully the refurb still left this as a real pub.I had been worried that it would end up with barrels with high chairs around them ,stupid prices and more wine than beer. This is a real pub, not something pretending to be one. Great staff and great beer at a reasonable price.

Pub has just had a refit but food and service is not up to speed. I did not get what I ordered I specifically ordered a dish with rice but got chips instead. I pointed this out this to the waitress. But the annoying thing was my husband paid the bill and didn't notice they charged me extra for chips! I asked for this item to be refunded but was told they couldn't do this without phoning their manager. I waited 10 minutes to no avail and walked out in disgust. I won't be going back. Tiny portions of mediocre food and atrocious service.

Love the refurbished new look, it’s warm and very welcoming. The staff are polite and happy. The food was delicious! Can’t wait to go back again.

Had lunch here today, 4 of us in total. The pub has been re furbished, to a high standard, really nice and clean. Jo and her staff were, very welcoming and friendly. The new menu was, varied and very reasonably, priced. Myself and hubby, had the steak pie which came with mash and broccoli, with a jug of delicious gravy, my husband had chips, our friends had the hunters chicken and pea rissotto All looked good. Would happily go back and would highly recommend. Good luck to all involved

Nice pub, with lovely staff and friendly clientele, no longer serves food, but good selection of beer at reasonable prices and no TVs to ruin a peaceful drink.

Another terrible meal at The George tonight. Can't think of a worse experience since we ate at The George last year. Why do we come back? The worst part of a bad meal is the total "couldn't care less" attitude of the staff as if they get it on a daily basis. At least last year they offered us a free drink. Tonigh they just said that if I wanted to make a complaint I should ring tomorrow and talk to the manager.

The pub had a lovely atmosphere. The customers were friendly and great to talk to. The bar staff were exceptional and tried their best to make our visit a good one. The menu was great for the majority of us but the special board needed updating as the vege option was not available this would not have been an issue if the chef hadn’t sent an alternative from broccoli and Stilton quiche which was supposed to be cheese and tomato to our daughter in law but turned out to be ham in it this was taken away and replaced by vege lasagne but we had all finished by then and she hardly ate any because she felt self conscious. Our five year old grandson requested macaroni cheese but not available so as I was having gammon and eggs(delicious) I asked if he could have scrambled eggs. Chef said no! Eventually someone did say yes they would micro the eggs for us. The chef should have been more careful than to send out that quiche to a vegetarian. As I said you could not fault any member of front of house in the George they were fantastic and our other meals were lovely and we will visit again on our next holiday and thank the lovely staff for working hard on our behalf it did make all the difference.

Very nice pub, lovely back garden, toilets are very clean. The food was really nice. My only complaint is that our main dish was served at the same time as our starter. Very dog friendly, which was a bonus

Unfortunately the roast beef was very tough, apart from roast spuds and cauliflower cheese the rest of the veg was luke warm. It also felt very cold in the restaurant. The waitress was very friendly, not her fault the beef wasn't good/veg cold.

Roast dinner was fair but I wouldn’t return as better roast dinners are available elsewhere.

Terrible food not one person had a good meal in our large group very poor standard , also rude staff.

This is a little gem of a pub. First impressions are that it is a little tired and unwelcoming, but the staff more than make up for that. Great home cooked food, that isn't fancy, but tastes good and is very reasonably priced. Drinks aren't over priced either. I have been to a 'gastropub' in the same village, but much prefer The George for food, prices & friendliness. Will definitely return....try it ans you will too!

We had a party for my sister's 50th wedding anniversary on 29th of December,bearing in mind we had to order our food at least a week in advance you would think they could make it good but no the food was not good at all.i had beef wellington which was so tough I needed a chainsaw to cut it.my niece had vegetarian lasagna which was burnt top and bottom so basically inedible.we had various other dishes between our party of 14 but none were particularly good,they even managed to overcook the fish and chips had by one person.i had cheesecake for dessert which was inferior to one you can buy in Aldi for £1.30.all in all very disappointed.dont waste your money,!

Really lovely member of staff serving drinks. Lovely food excellent portions and quality of food wasn’t too impressed by the older lady who was serving food found her rather abrupt and slightly rude toward customers. Took her a while to clear plates between meals understand that she was on her own but seemed like our table was being skipped. Otherwise all round excellent food!

Absolutely gorgeous Steak and Ale pie today 😋 Best one by far I've had for ages.

Have been here many times and always found the food and portion size good. Very disappointed today, food still good but sea bass dish so small it would barely feed my 5 year old grandson, barely half a fillet, some green beans and a few saute potatos served on a child size plate. Fish and chips used to be a filling meal, now you choose small or large, ordered small as for an elderly person but was tiny for the money. To be fair the boeuf bourgignon was a ddceng size. Overall, terrible value compared to other places.

Great place for a meal that is reasonable

Went for Sunday lunch. Sat in the bar as dining room was full. We had a few hiccups with our order and were beginning to feel we had made a mistake choosing The George. But the customer service was excellent. Staff did everything they could to put things right and compensate us for the inconvenience. When the problems had been sorted, the food was good and enjoyed by our party of 3. We would eat here again.

Booked Sunday roast today at 15:00 hrs to arrive and be told that thy have run out of roast food- no phone call to inform me - diabolical after previously been in a pub serving roasts !!

Awful service from the start. A roll of the eyes and incorrect information from the waitress when I asked if something had dairy in it! My jacket potato then came out fridge cold, it hadn’t been warmed at all. No apology at any point and 20 mins for a new one when my friend had completely finished her lunch. Still no apology and a full bill! It’s been a long time since I’ve had a that bad service! No wonder they were dead at lunchtime. The place was freezing cold as well, doesn’t make it very inviting.

This is a real pub, not something pretending to be one. Great staff and great beer at a reasonable price.

Hidden gem. Countless times have walked by here. Had a lovely burger meal last week, the food was incredible. Good value and great service. Will definitely be back

went here last 12months ago and to be honest worse microwaved food i have tasted !!! met new chef couple days ago and he invited us to try it now ! i always feel i give honest reviews so here goes . had vegetarian options and i can honesty say it was 10/10 cooked to perfection . home made coleslaw to die for . if any you haven’t been back for some time retry it won’t be disappointing

Very quiet couldn't have chilli as it contains coriander, steak and ale pie had nice filling but pastry soon soggy, lovely vegetables, lamb shank and curry enjoyed by friends, ham ok eggs over cooked and cold.

Two of us took our wheelchair-bound friend to lunch today. The manager guided the wheelchair to an outside table and took our drnks order. We ordered food which was excellent - the best ham I have had for a long time. Good value for money. Efficient and friendly staff - I can't speak highly enough about the new manager. Hadleigh is fortunate to have such a hostelry.

Stopped off here for a drink to finish off the day.

We waited 15 minutes for our order to be taken. We then asked 2 or 3 times how long it would be for our order to arrive. We were on a reasonably tight schedule, every time we were told 5 to 10 minutes. After 45 minutes we cancelled. Whilst getting the drinks bill, another customer was complaining about the slow service, size and quality of food, bearing in mind the cost. When asking for the manager, we were told he was on holiday and the girl said she really didn’t know who was in charge!! And to top it all, my lemonade was flat & tasteless!

I used the George once a week but the prices of the drinks were getting very high so i started using a cheaper venue. Guiness where i go now is £3.32 a pint. thats much better

Lovely food and reasonably priced

Made to feel extremely welcome by the staff, especially Kerry. Ate here twice and the food was absolutely fabulous, plenty to chose from on the menu to suit all tastes and lots of yummy deserts to finish off with. Dog friendly and they gave our puppy lots of attention and water and biscuits. Will be returning next year. Very clean pub as well with a bar area and dining room and outdoor area being spotless. Locals made us feel welcome as well which is always a plus. Keep up the good work everyone.

Have wanted to go for ages, finally got round to it and what a find!! Great menu, the food was amazing, fresh, tasty and beautifully presented. The service was amazing, friendly efficient staff. Kerry was brilliant, nothing was too much trouble. Will certainly be returning with friends!

A real ,genuine pub. Great Guinness and good feeling. Just like a REAL PUB should be and sadly so many other places do not realise this is what we want.

This pub is a nice building, very fitting for the local area. The staff seem friendly. The outdoor area is nicely lit, and has plenty of space. There is a lack of indoor seating however since a fairly large proportion of the downstairs area, probably 8 tables, is reserved for food, even in the evening when no one is eating. This is made worse on a Saturday when a band uses two of the few available tables. Also, drinks are quite expensive. On this occasion we arrived fairly late, around 23:15, and upon approaching the bar one of the bar staff came over and shouted (as it was the only way to hear over the band) to us that because we arrived after 11pm they wouldn’t serve us. No reason was given, and despite us arriving before last orders at 23:30, we were refused service. So we left, they lost out on £10 of custom, and made two potential customers rather dissatisfied.

Went for a beer after my curry in hadleigh and found it very pleasant. Shame its not bigger but they have a lot of heated seats outside so there's always room to sit.

Friendly staff, in the centre of town, clean and welcoming. Good food but a slight delay for some... Parking at the rear, dog friendly 🙂

I came here with my parents for a meal, it was surprisingly busy for midweek but the service was amazing, the staff were so polite and friendly (especially Kerry), everywhere was very clean and tidy, the food was delicious and we didn’t have to wait very long to be served, definitely recommend and will be coming back next time we’re in the area!

Based in a beautiful old building and superbly location on the High Street. Beers were great. Food was good though some diners said their ale pie wasn't hot enough (the waiting staff did heat it up when asked). Other than that it was a lovely lunchtime experience.

This pub is a cheery local where you can order a pint and have a laugh without concern that you'll disturb the next table. Live music from local musicians and food the way your nanna makes it. Love it!

A proper Suffolk pub, crammed with history. Great ales on tap. The best roast dinner I've had in a pub and the portions are huge.

Went christmas Eve, but it was very busy, but expected, we were there to see the band playing which were brilliant as always. Staff were friendly and helpful

I had a pleasant experience here, the food was really tasty. I had the macaroni cheese with bacon & garlic bread which came out in a generous portion! Also the staff were friendly. The pub itself has a very nice & relaxing environment. I did mention I wanted no salad with the macaroni cheese but it came with salad (they did take off the salad for me) but overall it was a great experience!

Ordered meal - waited nearly an hour then told order not been placed!! Another 25 mins before meal arrived. Dish very salty.
