Beautiful, cozy, country pub serving gorgeous home cooked food. Friendly, cheerful staff serving our lunch with pleasent conversation. Thank you to the owner who went above and beyond to provide us with an additional tastey takeaway ploughman's supper.

This was quite a frustrating visit as we were looking forward to some lovely pub grub after a very wet walk. I'll start with, we were late arriving as our walk took significantly longer than we intended owing to inclement weather. However we did notify the pub that we were running late, there were no issues at their end regarding running late and there was certainly no mention of them stopping food at any point. We walked in, a group of 5 plus dogs and a toddler and waited until the very patient young lad sorted the tables out. The other person behind the bar, an older woman seemed extremely displeased at our arrival and quite put out, despite us having a booking. She announced that the kitchen ordinarily shuts at 2.30 (despite the board outside saying food served all day) so they'd had to stay open for us. We weren't advised of this prior in any phone call and frankly, they didn't have to keep the kitchen open. They were well within their rights not to keep the kitchen open but chose to. There were two other tables occupied, one with a couple and the other with a table of four or five. There was no music and no atmosphere but the woman seemed flustered, stressed and a bit 'flappy' for one of a better word. The young lad came to take our food orders and again, was pleasant and approachable , he jotted them down and we were asked to go to the bar to order drinks. One of our party wanted a hot chocolate and we were abruptly told by the flappy woman, "we don't have them on, they take too long so only put them on in winter"...now...I'm not sure how this pub makes their hot chocolate but scooping some chocolate powder and combining it with hot water doesn't seem an arduous task to me. Our food arrived, I had the fish and chips which were delicious. My brother in law had the burger which again I was told was delicious. My wife and father in law had the halloumi burger which I was told was "bang average" and my mother in law had the steak and stilton salad which again I was told was fine. Average price of these dishes was £17-£20 each which didn't present as good value. It was no better than standard pub grub fare. During the meal we decided we'd like more drinks, my wife wanted a coffee and was abruptly told "you've just had the last one". Firstly I'm not sure why this is relevant but secondly, why? This was a lunch service and there should have been better management of stock control than announce no more coffee to a customer who just ordered a coffee. I also asked for a cup of tea which I love with fish and chips (yes I'm a Yorkshireman). I was told I couldn't have it because there was no more milk. It started to get beyond laughable now and I just started to feel irritated with the flappy woman's attitude and lack of customer service skill in any capacity. My wife had some milk left so we asked for a pot of tea without milk. That was delivered but it ended up being earl grey and the pot was less than half full. I'd lost interest and faith in anything to do with this individual now so decided just to put up and shut up. Throughout the meal all I could hear was the flappy woman moaning about how busy she is and how stressed she is. There were three tables of patrons quickly reduced to just us because the others were at the end of their meals. It was hardly like Oxford Street on Christmas Eve! Then the dance music started in the background as they started to turn down. I felt like that was our cue to get the hell out of dodge. We paid the bill which was eye watering for an overall mediocre lunch. I have to say, thank goodness for the young man. I've purposely not mentioned him much because our overall experience was poor but he was a silver lining in an otherwise overcast, miserable and dour experience of a visit. Thank you young man for having to smile through being forced to work with such a sour faced individual as flappy woman. Won't be returning. Oh and no baby change facilities is just criminal. **UPDATE FOLLOWING REPLY** Our table was booked at 1400hrs, and we arrived at 1430hrs, get your facts straight.

Ordered the crab ,crayfish and prawn salad . Sadly it wasn’t what it said on the menu ,there were no prawns and no crab !!!! I disagree ,the stuff in the mayo was crab sticks grated up and if you are trying to tell me otherwise then I’m afraid you are deluded ,there were no prawns and for that reason it was grossly overpriced .Im not concerned how many you have sold ,the point is what is described is not what is served so it’s very misleading,my husband didn’t say anything of the sort !!!!! I think if there was more transparency and less trying to cover up mistakes more would return .

We had a fantastic meal at this beautiful pub located in a picture postcard village setting. Service was friendly and welcoming with a menu to suit all tastes . The food was outstanding and clearly homemade with a good selection of hand pulled beers and the usual lagers etc.. thoroughly recommended if you’re passing and definitely worth the detour if you’re not. We will visit again.

I’m fortunate enough to occasionally work and stay in the pretty Suffolk village of Polstead and whenever I do, I always pop to the Cock Inn for a night or two! It’s a beautiful old beamed country pub with a really warm welcome from Deborah the landlady and husband Mike, the landlord. Deborah works exceptionally hard to provide delicious and hearty pub meals that are very generous in portion size, as well as being well priced. I’m pescatarian but there’s always plenty of choices for me and for those that want to share a plate, that’s no problem at all. I’ve been twice in the week (so far!) that I’ve stayed here, both visits were with friends that aren’t from the area and they were really thrilled with both the service and food that we had. Because they source (almost) all of their food locally you know it’s going to be full of flavour. My favourite main dish is the huge portobello mushrooms stuffed with a caramelised onion chutney and topped with slightly melted oozy goat’s cheese… served with a fresh mixed salad and chunky chips. Yum. It usually comes with baby potatoes but Deborah is more than happy to adjust to suit your fancy! Last night was my husbands 60th birthday and when his dessert was served, it was a fun surprise to have a huge sparkler to sing a round of happy birthday to him. So if you’re ever in the vicinity do make sure to pop in for a visit. Their pinot Grigio is great and according to the guys, the beers are pretty good too.

Popped in for a drink (it was warm with ice) and was going to decide whether to order food or not, sat outside as the weather was lovely. Unfortunately i have to agree with a number of other members, the land lady has a very bad attitude. It is a shame as the pub is lovely, it has potential to thrive. I felt more of a burden than a welcomed guest. I decided not to eat, i finished my drink and left. Upon speaking to other locals i was told that many other people feel the same way. Long story short - AVOID.

From the outside the pub looks lovely, has a very nice garden to sit and eat/drink in. And I won’t go into too much detail as i know the landlady responds and refuses to take any responsibility for anything. Long story short our experience of a meal and drinks was ruined by her very bad attitude. To keep it brief there were no chilled drinks, they simply add ice, the food was edible but overpriced and not quite as described (stuffed chicken was not stuffed, check pic), plates were dirty and then replaced with other dirty plates and i was told ‘the plates aren’t dirty they are just old outdoor plates’ not sure why they are serving food on them then, i cleaned off the dirt with a baby wipe anyway (check pics). Sitting and eating a meal while staff argue was lovely (not). The young lad who i think maybe works the kitchen was polite, the older man was nice enough but landlady definitely needs to take onboard what a-lot of other people are saying and change her attitude.

Well we can’t comment on the food or drink as we didn’t get to try anything as we went to the beer garden ask to look at a menu we were having a look and chatting about if we should try something for lunch or come back in the evening as we were staying nearby when the lady from behind the bar came out and said very grumpily do you want to order we said we were having a chat about it i was then going to order a drink to have wile we were deciding when she picked up the menu walked off without a word and throw it on the table in the pub so we decided we would not be spending our money in there after being treated like we can’t afford to be there. We both work In our local pub back home so we know how to treat customers and how it works both ways. So it’s a no from us I hope if any one else goes you get treated better.

Fawlty Towers comes to Polstead A few days ago we visited the beautiful chocolate box village of Polstead in Suffolk with friends who have relocated to Felixstowe from God’s own country. We decided to have lunch at the aptly named Cock Inn, hereinafter known by us as The Cock Up. Being from “up North” we tried to engage the Landlady in conversation by asking which ale she could recommend, only to be met by a silent gesture towards one of the pumps. Undeterred, we asked to see the menus and were given two menus. Whilst still looking, the Landlady came to our table and took the menu from under my nose, saying she had only printed two and somebody else wanted to look. It was a very chilly day and we were glad to get inside, however, the door was open and we asked if we could close it. We were told we couldn’t and we should move tables if we were cold. I commented to my friends that I felt the Landlady had a “bad attitude”. A few minutes later she came to stand next to me and said “I heard what you said”. I asked what she was referring to and she said the comment about her having a bad attitude which I confirmed I thought she had. She then asked us to pay up for the drinks, which were on the tab for our meals. I have noticed the said Landlady has replied to previous reviews and may well reply to this one, so to save any confusion: Here’s what should have happened: On being asked what ale you recommend you should reply, with a smile, our locals like this one. On taking away a menu from under a customer’s nose you should say “I’m terribly sorry, we’re busier than I expected, would you mind if I have this menu and ask you to share with your friends. On being asked if we could close the door you could have said: It is chilly isn’t it, but if we close the door people might think we’re closed. Would you like to move to another table which might be a little less draughty? That was a short lesson in hospitality- you’re welcome. Basiiil!!!

The cutest little pub, the owners were truly lovely and made sure you were well taken care of! The food was easily the best pub food I’ve ever had and my family used to own a pub like this!!! I had gammon and it was beautiful, not salty at all and very juicy. Hand cut fat chunky chips and wonderful fresh eggs. Even the side salad was delicious. It was quiet for a Saturday evening (pub is out of the way and hidden a little) but we very much enjoyed that. Truly wonderful place

Oh dear! We had just been on a 5 mile walk with our dogs and were looking forward to a pub lunch at the Cock Inn. We were at first told there would be a wait before we could even order. When I asked why this was, they said they were busy (which, at that point, they were not) and also were very short-staffed. OK, one could forgive them that. We wanted to sit outside and when we said we would like to order food, were asked by the barman if we'd like our drinks put on the tab. We said yes. The manageress / owner then overruled him, insisting for payment of the drinks up-front. We then sat outside in the very pleasant garden with others, several of whom had dogs. We were asked, after twenty minutes or so, if we would like to order. We ordered ciabatta sandwiches, which duly arrived in reasonable time. Our friend, who was with us, after a couple of mouthfuls, said she could not eat hers. I had the same, chicken and pesto, and agreed that it was far from appetising. I left some of mine too, which for me is very unusual if I have paid for food. I went back to the bar to get another pint of Speckled Hen, the only real ale available. The barman then proceeded to fill the glass with Guinness before I realised what he was doing. Overall, this was a very disappointing experience. The management and staff were clearly having problems and some individuals did not appear to know what they were doing. The Speckled Hen, however, was very good.

Been there too long? I remember the owners moving in a long time ago and to be fair they were reasonable people. This is not the case now. The Landlady is rude, abrupt and treats her partner who obviously had some problems disgustingly in front of customers and seems to have lost all people skills. Time to move out of hospitality perhaps. Shame because it's an attractive local pub.

Cannot rate this place high enough! We arranged for our local u3a History group to have lunch at the Cock Inn at Polstead after visiting churches on the Suffolk/Essex border. Deborah was so helpful in arranging the menu, which had a good choice of meals. Nothing was too much trouble and she even arranged for gluten free bread to make the moules & frites gluten free. The food and service was excellent with dietary requirements catered for. Our group of fourteen all thoroughly enjoyed their meals. Fancied a little drive in Suffolk, so decided to book Sunday Lunch , phoned and pre booked , they could not fit us in at 12.30pm , so booked for 1.30pm, when we got there was just waiting for someone to seat us , the staff were just standing there, finally went over and then got seated, considering they changed the time because said busy, there were only one other party of four there. Took ages to get a drink first, the waitress came over , we ordered the Tempara prawns to start, was not home made could tell the prawn inside was just mush, the sauce it came with was disgusting, ordered the Roast Beef for main, the potatoes were deep fried, I do like my beef Medium/Rare, but so rare thought it was going to walk off plate. When the landlady came over to clear plates, asked me why we had left our food, did tell her but don’t think she was really listening, At least they gave us a discount , only paid for drinks and starters. Such a shame as could be a really nice pub.

Should have known from the first contact! Called to book a table at 19:30 (reasonable time to eat) was asked if we could make it earlier, so we asked what time they could accommodate us, told us 19:00, which we agreed, then they said well we can fit you in at 19:15 (so not too different from original time. When we arrived we told the young lady we had booked (lots of tables with reserved signs on) and were told to sit anywhere without a reservation sign…being a chilly night we decided to sit in the bar where there was a fire, two nearest tables to the fire were taken so we sat at the third nearest. We were then approached again to say as we had reserved we needed to move to the table that had been reserved for us, which was actually at the back of the building, with no atmosphere, ambiance and freezing cold (thankfully there was a basket of blankets….so obviously it is an ongoing problem) My hubby had a glass of house red wine that was practically undrinkable and when ordering the pie was told it wasn’t available and 'anyway it was the end of pie season!' (Since when is a chicken pie out of season?) Food was very mediocre. New ?? member of staff was a tad over attentive, constantly asking if everything was okay. When we went to pay, took an extremely long time to add up two mains and two drinks (everything written out on a postcard of the pub…nice sentiments, but surely the sentiments could be pre-written to save the really long wait to pay. Then to top it all the landlord kept saying the card/or machine wasn’t working, only when told by other staff that the paper had run out was payment finalised. By the way…none of the other tables with reserved signs were occupied while we were there. Such a shame as lovely setting in gorgeous village. Unfortunately will not be returning.

Myself and my partner came to this place for a bite to eat for lunch. It wasn’t busy at all with only 2 tables of people eating, we were told to sit on a tiny round table where there was a discrepancy over a reserved sign and whether or not we were actually allowed to sit there or not, which seemed to really put the staff out. (Apparently it had been a hectic day- I’m not sure what days they usually have but if this was busy I’m not sure how this pub is still running!) My partner asked if we could order some food to which the man we asked said he wasn’t sure and that he would have to check, after disappearing for 5 minutes to carry out a single pot of sauce to a table- that must’ve been very hard work!!- we asked again if we could order food at some point. The man again looked very concerned and said ‘not at the moment, there’s someone in front of you’ Myself and my partner left immediately after this extremely strange visit. The pub itself looks very quaint and sweet from the outside but unfortunately the staff let them down majorly. We are both completely bewildered and confused at this strange encounter and I wonder if they have ever had people walk in for food before. Felt like we were the people from American werewolf in London where the locals look in horror as 2 Americans try to order a drink! Very strange! I’m sure that many people have had amazing experiences here, but probably have to call up a week before to as not to scare off the staff! I’m sure they will be just as happy that we won’t be returning as we are.

convenient place to stop for a pint while hiking, sadly otherwise avoidable. food: fish and chips were good! atmosphere: cute little place in a quaint village. sadly malodorous water was bubbling up next to our table. some other guests said they had experienced this before service: folks working were kind, but quite stressed out and made numerous errors with us and several other tables whilst we were there, then lashing out at clients. their staff had so many internal miscommunications on our order that we had to cancel our sticky toffee pudding (post 30 minute wait).this might have been avoided had the cook not been outside complaining about bad clients (-1 star)for that 30 minutes. at all points the staff seemed defensive about the service claiming short staffing issues and being busy in spite of 1 in 4 tables being empty. other reviews reflect similar customer experiences over time Thanks for the fish and chips. hope things work out!

Steer clear of this pub. Served a pint of craft beer, beer tasted and looked awful. The landlady didnt notice the barrel needed changing. On questioning the beer, she muttered under her breath, oh what now and tutted. Expensive at £5.40/pint, and a medium wine (not a proper meaure) £6.90, and no adjustment for the commercial bitter replacement!

Pub manager was very rude, waving his hands around when we ordered a drink. The barmaid later apologized. FOLLOW UP TO OWNERS REPLY: Unfortunately this is not a wrong review. There is only one pub in the village! On the 3rd September we came here at 12pm upon opening time for a drink after a walk around polsted. One member of our party asked at 11.50am 'I know your not open yet but can my daughter use your toilets'. The reply from the female owner 'Our doors would not be open if we were not open'. After that it went down hill even further. The male manager gave us constant attitude when ordering drinks to the point that a female member of the party had to walk away, and then later (maybe his daughter) a young female employee came outside and apologised for his behaviour. I can only report what happened, we were made to feel very unwelcome. Also looking at other comments and comments on trip advisor it seems a common theme unfortunately. If you don't like dealing with the general public don't go into the hospitality industry!

Dropped in for a drink on the way back to Polstead camping site with my wife and friends. Lovely village round this gem of a pub. Excellent service from the landlord. Draught beer was so good, I had another pint. Must also say the village community shop has to be seen, lots of fresh local produce at reasonable prices. Highly recommended.

Came upon this little gem of a pub while on a bike ride as we was visiting the area. Would have been rude not to stop. Owners were very friendly as were the locals. Very clean inside and inviting but as the sun was out we sat outside with a couple of beers and aspel cider on draught, Bowl of water for the dogs and they get treats too. Great local pub which is worth a visit. A very chilling afternoon. Thankyou

Dropped in on a Friday lunchtime, in mid-walk across beautiful local countryside. Despite no reservation and the place being busy, we received a warm welcome and were found a delightful small table in the historic bar. Whitebait were exceptional and the haddock and chunky chips with mushy peas were just the thing for a chilly spring day. Pints of London Pride sealed the deal. A great find, welcoming people and a chef who knows what they’re doing. Totally recommended.

We stayed with family at a local campsite and decided to book a table for 4 on Saturday night. It was quiet, as the weather had turned bad. But the food was fantastic! We each had the serloin steaks and they were cooked superbly! The chunky chips were 'proper' pub chips and were done to perfection. The owners were very friendly and welcoming and made the evening one to make sure that we do again when we visit once more in the near future!

We have visited the Peacock a number of times over the last year and have never been disappointed. We visited on a Saturday lunchtime with family and as usual got a lovely welcome from Jack and the team. I had the mackerel, followed by a superb risotto, my husband had the quail then the Halibut. We then shared the delightful petit fours, a nice alternative to a traditional dessert. All the food was beautifully presented and incredibly tasty, I would not be surprised if the Michelin people show an interest soon as the restaurant does deserve recognition.

Nice pub, with lovely staff and friendly clientele, no longer serves food, but good selection of beer at reasonable prices and no TVs to ruin a peaceful drink.
