A simply apocalyptic weather evening! A warm welcome and lovely food. Gin cured chalk stream trout rather overpowered by the chili ketchup rather spoiled what would have been a truly lovely starter but herb crusted baked hake utterly delicious. Very much to be recommended.

Really want to love The Angel but like a bad second date, it has the ability to be disappointing. The venue itself is charming if not a little mixed up about what it actually is… it a pub? is is a restaurant? is it a hotel? is it a bistro? is it a venue? It could be really really really good but it just isn’t. Menu options are lacking and often not available at point of order which for those who have dietary needs can prove a problem. We loved the soup (but not the toasted bread -we expected crusty rip apart bread), the scampi was good, the trout nice, as were the mussels (again served with disappointing toast) but the twice baked cheese soufflé (more cheese scone than soufflé) and garlic bread (2 meagre fingers) made us feel sad. We probably will go back ‘just in case’ but not in a rush.

We used to come here regularly as we enjoyed the beer and food; the staff have always been friendly and efficient and it really is a lovely setting. However, following some disappointing meals, we did not return for a year or so, but being in Petworth today we decided to give it another go. Sadly, today was again disappointing. The signature Angel bitter was "cloudy" so not available and both main courses we chose had "run out". The menu is not extensive and there were only 4 or 5 tables being served, so to run out of two popular main dishes early in the lunch service is poor. We left and ate elsewhere. The front of house staff and setting remain 5* and we really hope the food and bar issues can be resolved.

We had a belated and small wedding meal (postponed since the Covid pandemic) and stayed for 3 nights in the hotel on a B&B basis. Every person in the party, fourteen in all, was very pleased with the accommodation, the service, the relaxed atmosphere and the food. The staff deserve special praise especially Anthony who supervised the 'wedding' meal. The hotel is small and consequently intimate. It is a very old building tastefully preserved. The venue contributed in a unique way to an excellent celebration. Very highly recommended.

Ok sort of pub food best parts were the staff and the Guinness. Fish and chips minted peas did not hit the mark, fish lacked taste although it was supposed to be local caught, chips over cooked and peas cold. So tiered and hungry could not be bothered to raise a complaint. Pork chop veg and a side of potatoes was better. Guinness was the best out of the three pub restaurants we have been to in the last few days.

We usually go to the Angel as we always find it reliable. Sadly, today was a disappointing and unacceptable experience. Our table was not laid up when we arrived, and the food took over an hour to arrive. This timing was disputed as they said that we hadn’t ordered within that time span. (Sadly incorrect) That was because we could get no one to take our order!! We had my two small grandchildren with us, pasta was “not available” on the children’s menu. Who runs out of pasta these days?!! The food when it eventually arrived was good. We had asked them to bring out the children’s garlic bread earlier, and then the adults food was brought out before the children’s! Not one ounce of an apology from anyone except the waitress who was trying her best. We refused to pay the service charge (which in my view should have been offered in the first place) All in all we will not be returning in a hurry. The managers were rude and unhelpful. Also, they used to do smaller portions of the mains which was lovely, but sadly no longer. What a shame as our “go to” pub has changed substantially for the worse.

Under no circumstances go to this pub for lunch! We waited just under two hours to be served our main courses and when they came the food was of a very poor quality. On complaining, the management just said that they were very busy, although there were very few diners, and gave the impression that they couldn't care less saying that they had many instances when customers refused to pay the service charge, as we did!!

The warning signs were there, but we missed them! A lovely lady from an interior design shop in the town suggested that we try the Angel for lunch so my husband called in to book a table. “No need to book” he was advised so when we’d finished our browse around the town we made our way to the Angel. We were greeted by “we’ve got a wedding tomorrow” ! From that moment on we felt nothing more than an inconvenience to proceedings. To the point at one stage a random chair was dumped by our table, see photo! Our food was nothing to write home about, fish and chips was one of the smallest servings we’ve seen for a long time, and as for the eight chips, nothing needs to be said! When requesting the bill the server dumped the bill on the table, no comment, no words, weird! If you don’t want to serve customers for lunch because of preparing for other events then for heavens sake tell them, don’t force everyone to have a miserable time, be it customer or server!

The food (squid, soup, venison pies) was excellent. Only downsides: it could have been warmer (even though we sat next to the one functioning radiator); whilst tables were assiduously cleaned, the floor looked as though it could do with a deep clean. If you offer just one vegetarian option on your menu then at least make it better than a pasta dish with tomatoes and feta. Would it kill you to offer a veg option for a Sunday roast? Inflexible service unwilling to swap the mandatory starter for a side of vegetables with a poor excuse about not being 'able'. Diet coke was flat, sent it back to be replaced with yet more flat diet coke. Our party spent £230+ for our meal and it was a disappointing experience.

Dinner for 6. Everyone ordered different food in the menu. I had squid for starters and it was very salty. I asked for sea bream with chips instead of potatoes. It came with potatoes and chips bowl at the side. I told the male waiter my requested food and he came back with ONLY a sea bream on a plate. NO LEMON, no dressing, not even a sprinkle of anything. He should have explained that the potatoes were all mixed with veg that they cld not be separated. What’s more he rolled his eyes when I tried to make it right. Requested English mustard didn’t get to the table either. Other than these incidents, all other food were delicious and friendly ladies staff. Food presentation need to be improved.

My wife and I looked forward to returning to the Angel Inn after the latest lockdown. We were quickly shown to a table on the lovely outside terrace, where we were protected from the elements by a large canopy. The staff were cheerful, polite, and efficient as usual! After perusing the new, shorter menu, we chose 2 main courses, which did not fail to satisfy: an aged 10 oz. ribeye steak garnished with a field mushroom, pickled onion rings, and a salad, and roast strip loin beef, with roasted root vegetables, roast potatoes, and a large Yorkshire pudding. But the surprisingly delicious delight was the shared dessert: chocolate brioche bread and butter pudding, caramelised banana, and honeycomb ice cream, which was as tasty as it sounds! A great experience, and so good to be sitting down outside with a proper meal again.

Whether sitting outside in the courtyard at the rear or inside the traditional pub with low wooden-beamed ceilings, the service was friendly, polite, and efficient! I’d like to give a shout-out to Jana who gave us tip-top service on both occasions. My wife and I started with the tasty bread board and grilled mackerel with beetroot, followed by beef fillet carpaccio for her and organic flat-iron steak for me, both delicious. In lieu of the sticky toffee pudding we had initially requested, which had run out, we settled for a dark chocolate delice with strawberry ice cream. Just lovely! It had been meticulously cleaned, with extras (refreshments, bathroom accessories) and soft furnishings carefully selected to respect the COVID-19 restrictions. Breakfast choices were compromised as a result of the new COVID regulations, but despite this, it was an enjoyable meal. Greatly recommended. It is with a heavy heart I write this as my partner and I have very happy memories of the Angel having for many years enjoyed the roast beef on Sundays. Much of our enjoyment was engaging with the staff specifically Mark, Will, Josh and Chris behind the bar who was excellent and is still so to this day, as well as being a friendly face. Not so, are the current management and other Staff. Beautiful building and gardens but after visiting last Saturday and returning an empty glass to the bar I was met with an extremely rude young lady who was almost aggressive ( she will know who she is ). Can I suggest she looks for a career change perhaps in the kitchen where she would not have to interact with the public. We also had to pay by card as they wouldn't accept cash but we didn't see any notice of this. The Angel is one of Petworth's finest pubs. Sadly, since it reopened it seems to have lost its spirit. I concur with many of the comments recently posted. The food remains good if a bit pricey. The waiting staff are nice and efficient. The problem is the management. There seems to be no friendly publican to greet you (like the wonderful Mark who used to preside with a smile on his face and a friendly greeting) - just some tense and grim-faced management and a lady behind the reception counter who seems out of her depth & probably should not be in a customer-facing service business. Pubs need to be friendly and hospitable - this one currently is definitely not.Another gripe too: maybe the staff need to wear masks inside (is this some sort of Hancock edict?) but outside, in the vast garden, the mask-wearing seems excessive and uncaring for the staff's comfort and welfare.

C'mon Angel, get a grip - food and service is usually excellent - such Management behaviour towards staff is unprofessional and unwarranted.

We booked a room for one night as we have friends nearby. The room and bathroom were lovely and the front of house staff charming and helpful. The food, however, was absolutely disgraceful. Our dinner starter , which was cold took one hour to arrive when all others were served ahead of us. The lamb special was off by 8pm so my husband had the spaghetti, this arrived cold, the pasta boiled within an inch of its life and chopped into tiny little pieces like baby food.Breakfast the following morning was all carbs as there was no chef to cook breakfast; the coffee took 20 minutes to arrive and the croissants were obviously shop bought and stale, Lidl does a far better one for 39p! Our room alone cost £170, so in this category one should expect a really delicious dinner and breakfast . The staff were mortified by the slow service from the kitchen and the really awful food and this was removed from our bill, however this does not make up for a dreadful experience.

Extraordinary experience considering that I have a very open mind about supporting all businesses trying to get back to some sort of normailty. Didn't get offerred a drink by the person who showed us to our table. Waitress No 1, whilst very personable ,didn't know the menu & got our order wrong initially until highlighted (would have gone very wrong). Waitress No 2 then appeared asking for our order claerly unaware that we had already ordered from Waitress No 1. All drinks arrived together even though wine should have arrived with meal & no ice bucket. Wine left to open ourselves. Starters arrived OK with Waitor No 3. Mains arrived with Waitor No 4 swimming in gravy ( really, is it too much to ask for gravy/sauce/jus to be served separately in a boat) & when asked for horseradish (this was after all roast beef) arrived with another person wo served this as a nano portion in a shot glass! This was not one portion, let alone the two that were required. He also asked at this stage if we would like a bucket for the wine. This was then supplied. Waitress No 2 then appeared at various stages clearly with nothing else to do. After the mains, Waitress No 2 then asked if we would like desert to which we replied to give us 5 minutes. She then said no problem. After at least 15 minutes we then saw her with her coat on & left. Since we had not seen Waitress No 1 again that really was our last port of call. Had to go up & ask for the bill as noone was interested & got a service charge added on to add insult to injury. In closing, very happy to support all these businesses to keep them going but this is no excuse for shoddy, inept service & I will therefore not be going back to this establishment for a return visit.

Good wine list too. Our visit was a prelude to a Thanksgiving Service - set us up nicely. Thank you to all concerned at The Angel.

Very accommodating with a toddler and dogs. Pub lunch was nice, little on the expensive side, but a good local’s pub. They have their own ale which was tasty. Would go back if was in Petworth

We've been to the Angel Inn a few times and have never been disappointed. Very good and varied menu, but yesterday our group of four chose the fish & chips and the Goodwood beef burger. Fish and chips were exceptional, but my North American husband thought the burger overseasoned and disliked the use of brioche bun, which is everywhere now unfortunately. Desserts were great. Good atmosphere with a lovely welcoming open fire. Service was very good, but like other reviewers I would prefer to add my own tip rather than see 12.5% added to the bill. However, it will not stop me going there again. Great place.

Ate here on Sunday. The roast is EXCEPTIONAL. Even the red cabbage and parsnips were delicious and nobody likes red cabbage really. The service was warm and friendly, we sat by the fire and my son really enjoyed being told he needed to throw a log on there every now and again. Anyone in the comments here complaining about added service charge need to have a word with themselves .

I had the chicken burger, really delicious! The fries were some of the best I've had! However there is a 12% optional service fee added to your bill. Didn't appreciate that

Popped in for lunch on a visit to Petworth - service was excellent and the food was really good - plenty of it, well cooked and very well presented - the waitress was very attentive and helpful - we would recommend and go back to eat there again.

Having seen off the Boxing Day hunt at nearby Petworth Park we were looking for a place to have lunch and I suddenly remembered The Angel Inn and was able to book a table for lunch. Given what a miserable wet day it was this was a relief and it helped that they have the parking area in front of the Inn. The place was buzzing which is a testament to it’s quality.I find the interior of the Inn very appealing and welcoming. Country smart and fresh yet still sublimely cosy. We were shown to our table and had a very attentive young waiter. We ordered a number of things as starters to share between us. The Butterfly King Prawns with Sweet Chilli Sauce and Salt and Pepper Squid were particularly good and would draw one back again just for them. It was a shame that there were quite a number of things which were sold out which we would have fancied such as the Flat Iron Steak, but c’est la vie. The Treacle Tart was a thing of beauty and divine. I think it’s a particularly strong option for lunch in Petworth.Getting small things right like good drinks, bread and nibbles matched with really good attentive service all add to making it a memorable experience, easy to recommend and to return to.

We came to the Angel Inn to grab some dinner on a weekday evening. The pub was completely empty, just a few people at the bar. Absolutely no atmosphere and the staff were not attentive at all. The food was good but the service was very poor. The manager was rude and looked grumpy from start to finish, not something I would expect from someone in a senior position? We felt very unwelcome and whats more, is that they had the cheek to put a 12% service charge on the bill without asking? Regardless of whether it is optional, it is a cheeky way of guilt tripping customers into paying it. I will definitely not be eating here again and will be advising to friends and family the same.

Our extended family were so looking forward to our (pre-booked) meal at The Angel, however an hour before our table we received an email saying that they had cancelled our table due to not confirming the reservation, contrary to having done so. When it was suggested that we come and have a drink to sort things out we were rudely told it was full. The tone of their phone-call and emails was shocking. We will have our Christmas drink, and some lunch, but it certainly won’t be at The Angel.

My family and I booked a lovely meal for Christmas on 18 Nov 19 to ensure we gave enough notice. My mother sent an email detailing starters and mains in advance as requested. Fast forward to the day and 1 hour before we were due to arrive, we get an email stating that they have cancelled our meal. This is due to ‘not replying to the latest email’ despite replying to all emails and receiving replies. They also stated they attempted to call, however this is a shameful lie. Our family day out at Petworth was ruined, except the lovely team at The Star, Petworth who took us in, fed and watered us and found us a table. I CANNOT recommended The Angel Inn if you want a reliable service and you don’t want to disappoint your family.

First visit and very impressed with the atmosphere and helpfulness of the staff. The food was excellent and a nice variety to choose from. A great place to meet friends and relax in a cosy environment. Just the place to be on a cold wet winters day.

Had the most fantastic lunch here today. They have lots of GF options and as a coeliac - i found the staff really reassuring about the kitchen and gave me lots of confidence that they understood exactly what was required for a Coeliac to feel safe! Delicious gluten free fish and chips - made with a batter of cornflour and rice flour (I had to ask, would love to have recipe!) and using local GF beer to make the batter. Amazing.

Good food in a welcoming pub with friendly staff but why do they automatically add a service charge to the bill? Whilst I appreciate that the service charge can be deducted, in my view I do not like the mandatory adding of such a discretionary charge to the presented bill. Perhaps it is due to the establishment being owned by someone who originates from the US where tipping appears to be obligatory? Whatever the reason this practice tainted my experience and knocks my rating down to 3. May I make a plea to the management to reconsider this irritating practice, please?

I visited the Angel Inn, Petworth on Friday 1st. The food was absolutely amazing, the staff were attentive and lovely. However, about half way through our dinner it was ruined by a very rude customer who acted in a threatening way towards two members of staff by swearing, screaming and pointing in their faces. From what I over heard All of this obnoxious-Ness was over, I think, candles..?

The food here is excellent, but the hospitality leaves much to be desired. I met up with friends I hadn’t seen in ages for a nice lunch. We asked if they’d be closing to prepare for dinner, and they assured us that while the kitchen would close, we were welcome to stay for drinks. When I asked again to confirm, the lady replied warmly, “absolutely, you can stay.” However, the bartender’s attitude suggested otherwise; he seemed visibly annoyed that we were still there. Later, as we tried to order more drinks, I noticed him exchanging disapproving glances with an older gentleman who had welcomed us earlier. It was clear they didn’t want us there. If they preferred us to leave, they should have been upfront rather than making us feel unwelcome. It’s a shame because the food was great, but the poor treatment was enough to ruin the experience. I won’t be returning.

What a night! Came in for a few drinks on the off as the weather wasn’t great. Kacey saw we didn’t have a table but knew a table was leaving so reserved it off cleaned it down and gave us the table once ready! Could you ask for more? Beer was fresh, atmosphere adrenaline filled (without the party crowd) Thanks Trents! We will be back.

We were booked into this room as a gift from a family member. I looked at the website and saw parking was available and they had a late licence. I called before our visit to check parking would be available as it is right in the city centre. I also asked for our room to be away from the noise from the late licence. I was assured by a male member of staff that parking would be available and as our room was at the rear of the hotel we would be ok for the noise. On arrival there was no parking. I had to leave my partner in the car and go into the pub/hotel for advice. It was a tiny reception desk at the end of the bar. I was told to park in the multi storey car park nearby and they would cover the cost in the morning. Not the stress free start we were promised on the website. Apparently they have no way of stopping anyone from using their spaces. The room was dated and cold. There was a portable heater to use which we did. The disposable ear plugs were a worry but I just hoped they were for really light sleepers. On return to the hotel at about 11pm, after a meal the music was loud and it was packed. Its basically a full on nightclub. The noise in the room was horrendous. the music was coming through the walls and the floor. It was gone 3am before the music died down enough to sleep. We were too tired to even attempt breakfast and when I complained about the noise, the lady just said she was told it was busy last night. I was told I had to complain to management via emails to get a refund. When I first complained it was declined because the website states there will be noise. I had to send a further message to underline my situation and complaint. Eventually they agreed and refunded the full amount. Now if you want a room above a nightclub because you are going to the nightclub then this hotel will be perfect as you wont want to sleep before 3am. Any other guests please be aware it is loud and very busy. I must state I am not reviewing the club or pub as I didn't use either. The photos show a tired room and it needs a overhaul. It is great for being right in the city centre. If it wasn't for the parking and the noise it would have been a different review. The 2 stars are for the location and the staff who were very polite.
