Good food and not to expensive but get there before 8 as closed 11/10/24 Had OAP fish and chips with mushy peas great value for money good size portions GREAT

We had 2 portions of chips.......They were delicious, very tasty potatoes, lots of crispy bits and big size portions......Will be back...

Just had half portion of chips and a battered sausage , absolutely lovely £2.60 Going back tomorrow for the oap cod and chips £4.80 , can hardly wait

Not too bad and pretty quick UPDATE: Well, a fish & chip shop that closes at 8pm on a Friday 🤷. After a 3 hour drive, not ideal. It was 8:10pm. The worst part, we asked if they had anything in the hot cupboard, "no", even though there was, no eye contact, no empathy, no sale! Along with the people behind us. The queue for the other one was massive! We used #Wokon in the end. Lovely people, very accommodating.

Need to update their opening hours. Why say you’re open until 8pm on a Tuesday if you’re walking out the shop at 7:15? Rubbish. Edit: The most unprofessional response. They also then decided to find me on Facebook and follow me. Strange response to getting negative feedback to say the least!

We love the food served from here only trouble is, its NEVER open!! Just been round to grab some dinner and it was already closed at 19:40 ! Very disappointed

Generous portions and reasonable price. Staff friendly, but the food was way too oily for me.

Chips are terrible, over cooked and soggy. Miserable, cold atmosphere. No love. Worst "chippy" ever! Doesn't have to be fine dining to make your customers feel welcomed.

Food is brilliant here but the wait is very long ! Placed an order on the app to pick up at 18.30 but was still sat waiting for it at 18.54 and didn't get food til 18.57.Not much point ordering with a collection time of have to wait a further half hour to get the food.

I don’t know why so many bad reviews - we almost were going further for th fish and chips. It’s a quiet Friday not great weather so not busy but the fish chips and curry sauce were lovely as were the staff that took our phone order (eventually be patient if it’s Friday night) so giving it 5 stars to try and bump it up a little !!!

I post lots of reviews of fish and chips as I travel around the country. How did the Royal Oak compare. It was OK but I have had a lot better. The premises were very quiet during my lunchtime visit around 13-15. I was across the road and didn’t see anyone go in for about five minutes before I did. I ordered large cod and regular chips. The fish was cooked to order. No one else came in whilst I was there. The fish was a good size and the batter was crispy. Sadly when I went to eat it about two minutes later the chips were very lukewarm. They had obviously been cooked a while ago and sat in the fryer tray keeping warm. Taste wise I have had much better. Both the chips and the fish had an oily taste which I can only put down to the oil or age of the oil. Sadly it spoilt what could have been superb. Will I revisit ? The jury is out.

I visit this chippy most weekends when I come to my parents. I can honestly say they serve the best fish, it’s always fresh white flaky cod. Absolutely mouth watering and delicious. Staff are always polite even when extremely busy. Keep up the good work.

Poor. Ordered 4 large cod's and 2 large chips. Asked twice if the chips had salt and vinegar on them. They assured us they had as we were taking away we opened up down at the beach and surprise surprise there was no salt and vinegar. Food was average. Batter was not fresh and was greasy. Chips had zero flavour and were dry. Fish itself was good and meaty. Rude server and wanted to charge us for an extra box. Overall I would not go near this place again!

We are not from the area so googled chippys in the area and Royal Oak came out as one of the best so we gave it a go. Between us (5 of us) we had chips, battered cod, battered sausage and sausages and it was all lovely.

Picked up a medium cod and chips when I happened to be passing a few months ago. The fish was the smallest portion I've ever had from anywhere, and the chips were nothing special. Went back to question the size of the fish, to be told it's measured by weight, and that it was the correct size. I think they need to get their scales checked, as my kids have had bigger in children's portions. There's plenty of fish and chip shops on the south coast, and now I know to go to a different one next time.

Fast take away service. Super fresh tasting chips and great portions. Surprisingly low price. Thank you 🙏🏾

Fish and chips...No knife, no fork half fish etc...

Disappointingly average at best. Batter was soggy in places and super oily, my large fish seemed the same size as my wife's regular portion, and could barely taste the salt and vinegar. Felt quite queasy after eating Was a long queue of locals out the door to order and collect so took at least 20 mins to get two portions of fish and chips. Wasn't concerned about the time but it left me to have much higher expectations which were sadly unfulfilled.

I tried to contact you by phone to make you aware that on Tuesday evening (12/7) I ordered a Quorn battered sausage and when I bit into it it was a meat one. This was extremely disappointing (and unpleasant as a vegetarian) having been impressed by the colour coded vegetarian/ vegan menu. Please introduce a level of checks to ensure those who choose not to, or are unable to, eat meat/ fish/ dairy don't receive them in error.

Cant fault it, quick service, ordered from here serveral times now and consistently good fish. Decent portions. Chips excellent not greasy but proper.

Very small portion of fish comparably to price of other local chippies, chips very bland and forgot part of our order.

Just got fish chips and put in bin gone to moby chippy instead . That was the worst chippy oily fish tasted like car grease and rotten soggy chips what a waste of money . Never again.

Don’t bother going! Given the worst bit of over battered fish … then accused of eating half of it when we complained. Total joke as nothing to actually eat in the batter.

Very nice local chippy. Chips were well cooked in clean oil and the fish was excellent. They didn't answer the phone when we tried to call ahead but it was a busy Friday.

My wife and I very occasionally eat fish and chips. Down from London, staying in a B&B so needed something to eat this evening. I have to say this was without doubt one of the best fish and chips we have ever had. Well done guys..

Utter rubbish. Don't waste time and money. Standing in a queue whilst they run out of mushy peas, etc. Then go on to serve a sub-standard quality of food, tiny portions and only honour a quarter of the menu they publish!

When you go to the seaside you expect either expensive gastro food, small portions perfectly executed.... or 'local chippy' . Great food, solid portions at affordable prices..... THE ROYAL OAK OFFERS NEITHER. Firstly the positives. Now the negatives. This chippy ( under covid restrictions) is operating a novel system whereby about 5 orders are taken, then the staff put them together and distribute them to the waiting customers. Not dreadful but probably not as efficient as taking the orders and having someone put them together as they go along ..... On the night we went, there were no veggie options, burgers or anything that needed cooking other than the very basics... probably a good job, based on the sausage my son was served. Chips were ... probably re-heated. People pay a lot of money for thrice cooked chips done well.... but these tasted like they had been put in like warm oil for a few minutes and then served. Although, a spoilt chippy tea by the sea with nanny and grandad. AFTERTHOUGHT. apparently the fish was "quite nice"

Down wittering on holiday. Fish and chips were bang on and some happy full bellies. Chips were good. Decent portion. All very hot when we got home to enjoy 👍👍👍 Definitely recommend and will be back.

A lot of people outside the shop. Some had ordered over the phone, others like us had just arrived. The shop was well organised with covid precautions. We had cod, haddock, chips and curry sauce. Freshly cooked, and the fish was amazing. The chips were ok. Would definitely go there again, and recommend it.

Great chippy after visiting the beach with the road leading to the sea (and a pub too). Covid precautions in place with 2 customers inside at any time, splash screens set up too. Very orderly and polite too.

Very nice. I was a bit worried when we walked in at 6pm on a Saturday night and it was completely empty as I would expect a fish and chip shop to be packed at that time of day but we gave it a go anyway. We had to wait a while longer than I would expect for 2 portions of sausage and chips and that is because nothing was cooked ready. Also not very impressed that I saw the sausages were heated in the microwave but apart from that it tasted pretty good. Possibly explains why it was so empty in there

Found this on Google as I was close... very mixed reviews but some seem to like it so...why not try? I've never felt the urge to write a review about anything, let alone fish and chips but here it is. Really poor... at 6pm nothing in the hot cabinet so fish was cooked fresh (is it legal to catch cod this small?) ... the chips tasted like they were hours old though. Call me old fashioned but for £6.60 I think it's ok to expect a pretty good fish and chips. Sadly other people including this place don't agree. I've given this 2 stars as the dog ate most of it and he seemed to enjoy it.

Ordered food to take away and sit on the beach. Unfortunately when we got to the beach found out the order was wrong so then had to go back and get replaced. Happy to replace but just a massive inconvenience.

Not at all bad Fish and Chips, visited whilst Camping 23/07/16. I ordered and paid for amongst other kid's items 4 large Cod (£5.45 each) and Chips only to find at camp only three portions wrapped up. Apart from feeling defrauded it put a bit of a dampener on our Camp Site dinner which we'd been looking forward to all day! I've tried ringing Telephone number given on this site but all I got Saturday and earlier this week is answer machine. On trying yesterday and today all I get is ringing! Maybe Answer Machine is full with complaints? Check your order when they give it to you all bagged up. In the meantime I'm going to have to resort to more traditional methods of communication and pay a fortune for a stamp!

Fish was tasteless, chips were burnt and had hairs in them - looks nice but a waste of time and over priced for what it is

Just got a few portions of chips and half the chips were ok and half were old ones refried. Wouldn't use again if this is what they were happy to serve up.
