As a four-man pilgrimage to the No. 0 Vat of Ye Ancient Order of Froth Blowers (1924-1931), the c. 300-mile round-trip from Birmingham on a warm Bank Holiday Saturday might well have been a damp squib (despite the weather). As it was, eating pizza and drinking wine in the courtyard - instead of beer and beef in the scaffolded inn - turned out to be suitably eccentric. Angus's enthusiasm for the whole Froth Blowers' idea gave us hope that the A. O. F. B. will be part of the inn's identity once again. What could have been something of a disaster as a 'Plaque-Wetting' event (no plaque now, for example), was redeemed by the friendly reception.

Lovely place, lovely location, lovely food and lovely people! I can't recommend the Swan highly enough. A friend and I stayed for 4 nights in the stable block rooms. The food is delicious and the rooms are lovely. A perfect place to stay with access to many South Downs attractions nearby. Thanks to Fiona, Trewan and all the staff for making us feel so welcome and looking after us so well. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will be back. We dined here at the end of a long day's walk. A warm welcome from staff greeted us. It is very clean, with a wonderful outdoor garden area, plentiful spacing, and thoughtful steps to keep patrons safe. We enjoyed our halloumi burgers and the baked garlic-infused camembert. Watching the swifts fly overhead in this quiet corner was a perfect way to spend a warm summer's eve. We recommend.

I made a brief pit stop at this pub today whilst visiting two gardens in the area. This is the first pub I've visited since lockdown. I was highly impressed with the measures they have put in place to keep everyone safe. There is a one-way system in place which is signposted. Staff are very willing to explain things. Sadly the pub was very quiet but if I was back in the area I would eat/drink there and feel very 'Covid Secure'. They seemed to take the measures to protect everyone very seriously. I hope to visit again one day.

Went here today after a lovely walk down the River Rother. Had booked a table for me and my partner in the garden. On arrival there was a queue of people waiting to get in which I totally understand due to current circumstances. After fifteeen minutes we finally got to the bar to find an empty pub and three bar staff standing around one till having a jolly. We ordered our food and went to the garden. After waiting patiently in the garden for over an hour for a pint of prawns and a chicken dish we learnt that our food hadnt even been ordered, all though it was already paid for. We received a refund on the food but as they had no hospitality skills we weren't offered a refund on our drinks and preferred us to actually write an honest bad review instead of refunding the whole bill. Wont be going there again.

Confit duck was tired and drying, with a strange taste of cooking oil. Gnocchi nothing to write home about. Both came with the same unimaginative scattering of seasonal vegetables. The fish and chips delivered to another table looked to be on the overcooked side. Perhaps it tasted better. The ham, egg and chops looked OK. But you know you are on dodgy territory when they have to explain what the complicated platter menu means. Reasonable if small selection of beer, the Langham was OK. Smallest wine selection we've encountered in some time. Does being a tied house really prevent them from offering a local wine? After all, the pub is not much more than an hour's walk from the Stopham winery. Good service on a reasonably busy mid-week day in August. Well placed for walking, if you can find somewhere to park, but not somewhere to rush back to. Near the bottom of the league for Sussex pubs.

On arrival there was a little hesitancy with which room we should have but having requested a superior room and assured the bathroom had been updated all seemed well . Unfortunately as the carpet got more and more worn we became disillusioned. The room had been badly emulsioned - basic bed, 2 bedside tables, 1 desk with pine chair, sad stuffed teddy on floor, 3 hooks on wall (no coat hangers) nowhere to put stuff. Bathroom down 3/4 steps - badly decorated and badly constructed shower with little pressure for hot water. Not good. It was a cold and depressing room after a long journey - couldn’t wait to leave. At £110.00 a total rip off! Evening meal at extra cost was ok but breakfast dismal - extra cost for hot food. Definitely one to avoid. Staff friendly but no one asked if everything was ok!

Old historical pub , with a large garden area, we had the Sunday roast 'beef' lunch which was very good, our room for a one night stay, was less than the Superior "name tag" given, room was large but sparsely furnished, double bed and a writing table, no wardrobes, armchairs or any wall paintings. There was some internal decoration being done but not to a very good finish. The staff were attentive and friendly.

The Swan Inn is situated in the compact village of Fittleworth. There is some age to the building. On a pleasant day there is a secluded pub garden with picnic tables. The pub is dog friendly and on our visit the staff were friendly. As an added attraction a duck and her seven ducklings had taken up residence in the garden. Overall the visit was pleasant with little to criticise EXCEPT the price of a pint of beer. Ordinary strength beer (circa 4% ABV) was a quite ridiculous £4.50 per pint; an absolute rip-off and 10-20% above industry norm. Even accounting for the perceived affluence of the area this price could not possibly be justified. So check-out the prices of everything before you visit to ensure that cost is within your expectations. The assessment would have been 'Very Good' but based on prices it is no more than average; three 'stars'..

Visited for lunch. Limited and relatively high priced menu. Service was very good but the portions were small and not in proportion to the price. However, what there was was good quality and tasty. They need a wider selection of lunchtime snacks/meals and to price them more realistically. They may then get more customers that will improve the atmosphere.

We had visited this country pub back in the spring of 2018 and thought it was charming and idyllic, how wrong could we be? We booked a room for 1st Feb 2019 to celebrate our joint birthdays (wife and myself). We arrived at 5 PM this afternoon after being told that we could book in from 2:00 PM and the lights were off and the place closed. Fortunately we could see someone in the back of the pub, so we ring the bell. When the person came to the door, he seemed surprised that we wanted to book in before the Pub opened at 6 PM. When we booked in, having booked B&B; we were informed the breakfast was Continental only, which surprised us, as the booking site didn't mention this and the room for the night was £110. We were also informed that they had a large party booked in that evening so we would have to place our food order before 7:30 if we wanted to eat. So we would have to get a move on if we wanted to freshen up and have a drink before eating. When we were led to our room, it was cold and damp, it's decor left a lot to be desired, the bathroom was very tired, dirty and cold, the room wasn't much better, not worth £110. The person who lead us to our room, then turned on the radiator, which was off and a space heater and said it might take a while to warm up, but we could have a drink in the bar while we waited. This obviously within the short time slot we had before we had to place our food order. We elected to stay in the room and to have a deep bath in order to warm ourselves and the room. Unfortunately there was only enough hot water for 1/2 a bath and there wasn't a hairdryer, so much for that great idea. We also didn't have a TV remote for the smallest TV in the world and the internet didn't work, so to the bar it is then. When we got to the bar, we were seated in a corridor part of a busy bar, not in the restaurant as requested. This was due to the size of the large party they were expecting (no room in the restaurant), we asked to move out of the corridor and eventually we were moved closer to the log fire, which also wasn't that effective as the logs were being severely rationed (2 logs burning for the whole bar area), so we were just as cold in our new location. We stuck with it as it was now 7:15 PM and had to get our food order in. The food itself was very nice, despite us being very cold at our table, but we enjoy the meal. After the meal we went back to the room, which had by now warmed up and off to bed for an early night. In the morning the Continental breakfast consisted of tea/coffee, orange juice, toast, croissant, cereal and a fruit yogurt. So off to MacDonald's it is then. We checked out, without being asked if we enjoyed our stay, or an apology for the way we were treated over the meal the evening before. Won't be coming back and will be informing all our family and friend not to make the same mistake as we did.

Visited on a Monday for my wife's birthday. We live a village over, have often passed but never partaken. Our local has changed hands and gone downhill which meant we wanted to go elsewhere, so you can imagine my trepidation when on entry the pub sported the same colour scheme as our village pub which implies the same owner and his plans for local domination. Piped music was a bit intrusive but playing nothing offensive, overall the pub was clean and tidy with the toilets a welcome clean quality unlike some placed I've frequented over the years. Was surprised to see a cider that I enjoy being offered on draught, and a long way from home was this particular offering.

Nice country pub the only one in a small village. The room we had was at the rear of the pub so very quiet but the room and en-suite were tired and in need of a refurb.

We were booked into this room as a gift from a family member. I looked at the website and saw parking was available and they had a late licence. I called before our visit to check parking would be available as it is right in the city centre. I also asked for our room to be away from the noise from the late licence. I was assured by a male member of staff that parking would be available and as our room was at the rear of the hotel we would be ok for the noise. On arrival there was no parking. I had to leave my partner in the car and go into the pub/hotel for advice. It was a tiny reception desk at the end of the bar. I was told to park in the multi storey car park nearby and they would cover the cost in the morning. Not the stress free start we were promised on the website. Apparently they have no way of stopping anyone from using their spaces. The room was dated and cold. There was a portable heater to use which we did. The disposable ear plugs were a worry but I just hoped they were for really light sleepers. On return to the hotel at about 11pm, after a meal the music was loud and it was packed. Its basically a full on nightclub. The noise in the room was horrendous. the music was coming through the walls and the floor. It was gone 3am before the music died down enough to sleep. We were too tired to even attempt breakfast and when I complained about the noise, the lady just said she was told it was busy last night. I was told I had to complain to management via emails to get a refund. When I first complained it was declined because the website states there will be noise. I had to send a further message to underline my situation and complaint. Eventually they agreed and refunded the full amount. Now if you want a room above a nightclub because you are going to the nightclub then this hotel will be perfect as you wont want to sleep before 3am. Any other guests please be aware it is loud and very busy. I must state I am not reviewing the club or pub as I didn't use either. The photos show a tired room and it needs a overhaul. It is great for being right in the city centre. If it wasn't for the parking and the noise it would have been a different review. The 2 stars are for the location and the staff who were very polite.

The food here is excellent, but the hospitality leaves much to be desired. I met up with friends I hadn’t seen in ages for a nice lunch. We asked if they’d be closing to prepare for dinner, and they assured us that while the kitchen would close, we were welcome to stay for drinks. When I asked again to confirm, the lady replied warmly, “absolutely, you can stay.” However, the bartender’s attitude suggested otherwise; he seemed visibly annoyed that we were still there. Later, as we tried to order more drinks, I noticed him exchanging disapproving glances with an older gentleman who had welcomed us earlier. It was clear they didn’t want us there. If they preferred us to leave, they should have been upfront rather than making us feel unwelcome. It’s a shame because the food was great, but the poor treatment was enough to ruin the experience. I won’t be returning.
