Food and atmosphere was fantastic. Service however wasn’t great. A warm welcome for my Dad in his wheelchair and first drinks arrived promptly. We then waited half an hour for our order and only once we’d found someone. We then had to chase the wine order and then for the main course. It was busy towards the end of our meal but initially there were plenty of staff and only a few customers eating.

Firstly what a lovely pub, been here many times over the years and always a favourite, Every other occasion we’ve have been it’s be fabulous! The food is one of the highlights. We came in for lunch, Friday afternoon and sadly left disappointed. We had a few appetisers, bread olives, anchovies, which were fine. For mains we had the smokie, a fish burger and a beef burger. All unfortunately very underwhelming, considering the prices, service was slow although pleasant. They did try and rectify with a free dessert, not really helpful at that point. Working in hospitality myself I understand the pressure of a busy service, and also the climate of the industry with rising prices, hard to get staff etc, sadly I feel all independent business that have character charm and passionate owners working within it will fade away, this is a bad review but will still give 5 stars as, business need support! Hoping to visit again soon.

3rd visit and probably our last. Poor Sunday evening meals two pork meals seemed to be warmed up from lunchtime with new vegetables and dried up Yorkshire puds. Two specials spoilt by chips, which were overcooked, probably dipped again from lunchtime. Great location spoiled by overpriced inferior food and non attentive staff.

The food was poor, over cooked fish batter, overly fatty belly pork with little pork in the dish. Poor service, had to chase up dishes in addition and then arrived cold. Rarely checked on for drinks, dishes left for ages without being taken. We’d booked for a special occasion for a birthday in the downstairs area which understandably had to be moved for safety but then put on a table in the snug area with all casual drinkers so lacked any specialness about the occasion. We won’t be returning again.

Unfortunately, not a good experience, for food or service - a long wait for food, indifferent service, and expensive, somewhat faulty food. Kipper pate with bones and a fin, shellfish stew (?) with overcooked prawns. No finger bowl. The food was very slow to arrive, but ironically, the main courses had obviously been sitting on the pass for some time. No eye contact from staff, no apology, other than ‘its sunny, everyone is out’ Yes, well we booked before the sun came, and were expecting more. Lovely venue, mouthwatering menu, but oh, so disappointing! We will not be back.

Have been to Dell Quay many times and always good. Yesterday was awful. Arrived 4:15 for late lunch as bookings were full. Starters served reasonably quickly. My French Soup was poor, thin brown water with a few onions and a slice of sourdough bread - not very French. Style over substance I feel. We then waited an hour for our main courses while the Sunday roasts flooded out of the kitchen. By this time I had lost the will to enjoy a 'cornish sole' which I believe was megrim - not a sole in sight in a poor lobster sauce. Again style over substance at £30 a plate. We did not stay for dessert. In fairness the waiting staff did not charge us but alas the damage had been done. A sour note to end our lovely weekend away. I doubt very much we will return. Seems Dell Quay now favour mass servings over the quality they used to serve.

We fancied a light celebration lunch. We turned up on spec and were seated next to 4 very loud ladies, they were obviously having fun but boy they were loud. We were moved to a quiet window table. We ordered fish snd chips and a pork belly. Both were good but the fish was without doubt the best i have ever had! Delicious crisp batter and tender fish. And I struggled to finish the generous portion!

We love the pub, best scenery and setting in the area and generally good service. Unfortunately, on our last two visits the food has been below par. At the weekend I ordered steak (£28) and found it to be tough, perhaps not a great cut of meat as it appeared to be cooked well. The chips were also dry and felt like they had been sat waiting for a while before serving. My wife ordered scallops which were OK, but underwhelming taste and presentation. For the price you would expect better quality, and given the setting it is a shame the food seems to have done downhill. We will visit again, but only for a drink....

Came for a 19th birthday meal. Positives - some lovely dishes inc shellfish stew, Sussex smokie, and prawns starter were all amazing. However a real shame to have one of the party (who is 18) asked for ID (which they didn’t have on them) when trying to order a beer to go with their meal. Perhaps the rules are open to interpretation but it felt unnecessary at a family meal. Service was slow, considering it wasn’t very busy on a Tuesday night. And service charge automatically added to bill. Yes we could dispute it but it adds an awkward moment at the end of what’s supposed to be a celebratory evening. Felt a bit ripped off.

Lovely restaurant - gorgeous location by the water. Really lovely interior and staff really friendly. I’ve just given food 3 star as not that special and the cheese board was so terrible. Just a few chunks of cheddar and a tiny slice of Brie, some shrivelled stalks of celery and then about 10 loose grapes to fill the plate - not good at all. Really let the meal down

We have been coming to this pub for years and the standards have slipped big time. Arrived Saturday afternoon, it wasn’t even that busy like it normally can be. It’s not exactly reasonably priced but usually you wouldn’t mind paying that for good food and service but today we did not get that at all. The waitress was so miserable and rude, she plonked some overcooked chips in front of us and went to walk off. I mentioned that the chips are normally thin with Parmesan cheese and truffle oil not thick. She then replied that’s indoors and walked away. There was no offer of condiments or cutlery at all so I approached her at the food hatch where they seem to be cooking this food. To find her moaning about me to the girl behind the counter. I ask for condiments and she replies “they are over there on a stand, but most of them are on tables you can find them” There were no sauce bottles on any station which I had to search for and all the sauce bottles that were on peoples tables were also empty. Chips overcooked and very small portion for your monies worth. I then watched her treat all the other customers the same way. She took a plate of a pile of overcooked fried food to a lady plonked it on the table and walked away and then we witnessed the lady she served having to ask for cutlery and condiments to another waitress. It was clear to us all that this waitress does not enjoy her job or cares about her customers and the girl whom I’m not sure is a chef cooking in the hatch needs to learn how to cook chips.

We recently visited The Royal Oak and had a mixed experience. While there were some areas for improvement, there were also highlights that made our visit memorable. The desserts were a real treat—beautifully presented and delicious. The main menu showed creativity, although mushrooms featured heavily in many dishes, which may not suit everyone, especially those with allergies. It would be great to see a bit more variety in the ingredients. One aspect that stood out was the friendly atmosphere and charming decor, though we did feel slightly rushed when asked to vacate our table sooner than expected. Overall, with a few tweaks, The Royal Oak could become a standout dining destination.
