Nice pub but the food was not good - all 4 of our meals (2 sausages and 2 pies) were burnt. We did point this out but the publican did not seem unduly concerned.

We all had great meals a mixture of sausages and pies....served with wonderful mash and gravy. My grand daughter was impressed with her children's meal. It was good to have a Sunday lunch which was a bit different. We were in a separate room to the main pub which was ideal for us...and the dog. The service was a bit slow but we were a big party

Good food, nice friendly service but slow due to only one waitress on duty, so she was doing the best she could. Bit chilly in the dining room to start the evening, but it warmed as the evening went on. Portions could be bigger, however, we could have ordered veg, this wasn't clear that the food came with none. But all in all a pleasant evening. Also very limited menu, fine if you really like sausages or pies, but if you don't you'll be disappointed.

We reserved a table for dinner on Friday night at 19.30pm and showed up on time only to be told that the restaurant was full. They sat us in the bar area, cleared a table for us but didn’t wipe it, next to a very loud music speaker, took a drinks order (but never brought it) then proceeded to ignore us for 30 minutes before we decided to take our business elsewhere as we clearly were not going to be served any time soon. Very disappointing. PS- my partner went to the men’s toilets outside and found out that there were several spare tables in the restaurant, and most of them were taken over by bowls of dog food. The impression was that they were more careful about dogs eating than the customers who had reserved in advance.

Such a shame, this was my local 24 years ago, came in for some simple pub food at 1945 hrs only to be told it's too late to order food. 15 minutes later 3 locals at the bar are brought out burgers and chips by the chef. 🤔Really does annoy me. First time eating here since the new owners (think they struggled for a while to get a chef and their food up and running). But the sausages are back! They also offer a great selection of pies - not just a pie of the day (and a few other options). One good addition is the availability of the sausages as a pattie in a burger bun. I had the garlic, fennel, chilli Sussex Sicilian as a pattie in a bun which was great. My wife loved her chicken, ham and leek pie. If you want some great pub grub of sausages, patties and pies, you'd struggle to find better. Great service from Ethan too. We'll definitely be back.

Sussex Brewery has some great drinks on the menu but the food was a real let down. We had cod goujons that were very nice but the sausage platter was a mixed bag: the sausages and mash were very tasty but microwaved veg and packet gravy is totally unacceptable for the price. How the chefs can cook so many sausages and onions and not make homemade gravy is beyond me.

Food and service really good. Was a bit disappointed that the bit we were seated in was no longer a cosy pub atmosphere. Has been " updated" into a rather clinical setting with odeous music which I had to ask them to turn down. The bar area was still traditional but the front door was left open to the main road and it was cold. I am sure the pub must have changed hands since I visited some years ago and the ethos had definitely changed but the food and beer was very good and also good value so I would go again but ask to sit in the bar or the garden. Didn't manage to check out upstairs on this occasion.

BEWARE, NOT THE SAUSAGE PUB OF OLD. I eat out 3-4 times a week, and I can honestly say this is the worst 'restaurant' experience I have ever had. Pie empty of filling, with an absence of the listed accompaniments. When the waiter asked how the meal was, I politely pointed out my empty pie to which he replied 'well its not our fault' followed by 'we don't make the pies'. I enquired as to why he asked me about my enjoyment of the meal but he just stormed off in a petulant teenage sullk. The owners and senior staff at no point attempted to remedy the issue. This is the only time I have ever exercised my consumer right to not pay for a meal. The owner still had the gall to suggest that this was not my right, to which I offered to leave my contact details should he wish to pursue the matter. Funnily enough, he didn't accept that offer. This does not feel like a restaurant. It's a pub that serves poir bar food in some dingy back rooms as a sideline.

Came here after a disappointing experience at another local. Actually hadn't been here for some years but remembered it being a lovely pub with character and atmosphere. I knew that it had recently seen a change of ownership so was expecting great things. To say we were disappointed was an understatement. The welcome was sort of there but it lacked something. The neon signs and the TV displaying their pies was somewhat odd and out of place in this old Inn. The staff it seems were not used to the industry and lacked the ability to serve correctly. All in all a disappointing experience.

We went here on Friday 1st Dec for a friend's 50th birthday meal. Somewhile after being seated, someone from our group had to go downstairs to order our drinks. A waitress bought them up, complaining she had been taken off the bar, to now serve tables. After what felt like forever, she eventually took our order for food. After about 40 mins, she asked if we were waiting for dessert, to which we replied we were still waiting for our mains. When the mains eventually came, the plates and food were cold and very obviously was not freshly cooked, but frozen and inedible. Parts of my husbands meal was not even cooked! We asked for the bill, stating we would pay for our drinks, but not the food, which we hadn't touched. The waitress bought her manager up, who offered a 10% discount, which we declined, stating that not only had a 50th birthday meal had been ruined, but we were all hungry and it was too late to get food anywhere else! We refused to pay for the food, but left money for the drinks we had. The manager stated that he has been in this business for 35 years, but he didn't appear to have any conception of the fact that a 50th birthday celebration had been ruined and the food that was served to us was inedible!

The whole experience was just so poor. The service was beyond slow. We had to keep going downstairs to the bar to order drinks. Once we ordered we waited over an hour for 2 soups 3 small prawn cocktails and 1 pate. The cream of vegetable soup was exactly like Bachelors cup of soup and only luke warm. Eventually the waitress cleared our starters away we then had another hour wait she came back and asked if we were ready for our desserts. When we said we are still waiting for our mains she disappeared 20 minutes later 7 cold plates of food arrived with separate cold gravy. Some of it was still frozen!! By this time we just gave up. Asked to speak to the manager who didn’t accept any responsibility said they were short staffed and busy. He also said we were rude to the waitress which we weren’t. The other table upstairs had a similar experience. The dining room wasn’t busy. Such a shame we will go back for a drink as the bar downstairs is lovely but never again for food. It was too late to go anywhere for a meal . We ended up going to another local pub and had packets of crisps instead. Was a 50th birthday we won’t ever forget!

We were so disappointed, having loved the Sussex Brewery when we'd visited several times years before. This couldn't have been further from past experience. For six of us, including two children, we waited almost three hours for a two course meal. Two of us gave up on desert and left. The waitress was aggressive and not at all helpful. We even asked for the desert to be brought out as soon as we received the mains and in the end walked away without it. We were wedged against a wall to accommodate a party who turned up two and a half hours into our meal, rather than ask the new party to move their table as the table next to them was empty. The sausage was burnt and the stuffing still frozen when it came. There was no children's menu. The cheesy chips that we could order for the kids was congealed and unappealing. The waitress kept making excuses and was outside smoking at one point at least 30 mins after we'd asked for the deserts. We won't bother coming again.

This was probably the worst Sunday lunch experience ever. I went here with my son and grandson and probably waited 10 minutes to just find out if they had a table for us. That should have been a warning sign as it didn't look very busy. We were then shown upstairs by a friendly waitress to our table, we then waited another 15 minutes before she came to ask if we wanted drinks, we told her we also wanted to order food at the same time as we had a 2 year old with us. There were 2 other tables with people at them. The drinks arrived and then a while later the food arrived. I couldn't quite believe what was put in front of me, it was nothing more than a pasta bowl with some obviously frozen veg that looked terribly soggy, this had strangely been arranged around 3 miniscule Yorkshire puddings that were the size of table spoon, on these were bits of potato that were hardly recognisable as roast potatoes and my son said "perhaps they bring the potatoes separately" I pointed out that the potatoes were already on the plate. The beef looked overcooked and was completely stone cold. The child's roast for my grandson at £10 was so dreadful that we couldn't even cut through the chicken as it was so tough. The plates were cold and so was all the food, even if the food had been hot it looked so disgusting I wouldn't have wanted to eat it. As gravy had come in individual pots, i dipped my finger in to see if that was even hot and it was only tepid, it tasted so strange and nothing like gravy. As my son continued to try cutting his child's meat, I told him I couldn't possibly eat this as it was inedible to which he then agreed. The people on the next table overheard us and said theirs was also disgusting with frozen broccoli almost a puree. I've had better food in hospital and school dinners. I can't imagine who was in the kitchen but it certainly couldn't have been a chef. Whoever has provided positive reviews recently can only be friends of the people running this pub now as nobody in their right mind could find anything positive about the food, it truly was disgusting. We told the waitress we were leaving as the food was cold and disgusting, she asked us to pay for the drinks that we hadn't drunk, we had ordered wine to drink with our meal. It really was a terrible experience. The couple who ran this before the last people were great, the food was exceptional and so was the service, my son said she was French. We will not be stepping foot in The Sussex Brewery again. £17 for a roast that even the dog would have turned his nose up at. A real shame as my son lives just round the corner.

Went for a Sunday roast after a water sports activity, staff were lovely and welcoming , but the food was super disappointing, I paid £16.99 or near abouts for a roast , the chicken wasn’t the best watery and not a lot , and the veg was frozen veg with aunt Bessie or similar roast potatoes, the only thing that saved it was the gravy and the Yorkshire , I was super hungry so of course ate it all and didn’t want to embarrass the staff as not there fault , but come on ! Expensive! took a while , microwaved veg so no flavour ,fake roasties . Let the pretty little pub down big time . My picture to the site picture you can clearly see the difference. Home cooked it certainly was not .

Lovely pub came here for a work meal. They had laid the table out for 14 in a square shape which was much better than a standard long table as allowed everyone to see and speak to eachother. The food was good I had the moo which is the steak and ale pie which was very nice. The menu is listed to a couple of options of pies and multiple different types of sausages so keep that in mind. I had a sticky chocolate cake for dessert which was absolutely beautiful. Only small comments I would make was that the chips were not the best they were a bit soggy. I loved the presentation of the food and the fact that the gravy was severed in a copper saucepan on the side.

Under new management - which is an immense improvement on the previous 'team' who almost ran it into the ground - and they're gradually finding their feet and building local allegiance back up. Back on the menu are the popular sausages - although these apparently come from Storrington which is somewhat of a surprise as Emsworth has 2 butchers who both sell/produce great sausages. We tried the pies and I have to say we were a little underwhelmed. Our Chicken, Leek & Ham Pies were lacking in flavour, and Leeks, and with a token teaspoon of Mushy Peas`but with a very nice gravy. Our friend's Steak & Ale Pie looked a much better bet. There are much better pies - like Turners - available.... ....I hope the new team succeed, they're certainly trying to and as a pub it's got so much potential, and history.

I’m a big fan of this place. The food is lovely and the portions are a good size all with reasonable pricing. The sausages are really good and I like all the flavors they have on offer. Thanks to John for serving us and being a welcoming host. *UPDATE* a few months on after the owners have changed. For drinks this is a nice cosy pub and I will always come back for a pint. However, I will not be back for food after the Sunday lunch I had here. £17 for a chicken roast and it was awful. The portion sizes are terrible, three small burnt roast potatoes, one ball of frozen burnt stuffing, two frozen Yorkshire puddings, a few veg and some dry chicken. The meal was luke warm at best, even the gravy, yet the pot was warm which all lead to a thoroughly disappointing experience. 10/10 won’t try again.

Lovely pub. Pity that the food was not very good. Sunday lunch now nearly £20. Meat was tough all the rest was lukewarm. Pity shall not be returning

Food and atmosphere was fantastic. Service however wasn’t great. A warm welcome for my Dad in his wheelchair and first drinks arrived promptly. We then waited half an hour for our order and only once we’d found someone. We then had to chase the wine order and then for the main course. It was busy towards the end of our meal but initially there were plenty of staff and only a few customers eating.

We recently visited The Royal Oak and had a mixed experience. While there were some areas for improvement, there were also highlights that made our visit memorable. The desserts were a real treat—beautifully presented and delicious. The main menu showed creativity, although mushrooms featured heavily in many dishes, which may not suit everyone, especially those with allergies. It would be great to see a bit more variety in the ingredients. One aspect that stood out was the friendly atmosphere and charming decor, though we did feel slightly rushed when asked to vacate our table sooner than expected. Overall, with a few tweaks, The Royal Oak could become a standout dining destination.
