we have stayed before at the angel hotel. each time we stay it is to meet our son and celebrate his achievements. this occasion the rooms are looking very tired with mold on the ceilings. we phoned 6 days before to book breakfast. we was informed that was no problem and discuss on arrival. when we tried this we were told that the kitchen was undergoing servicing and breakfast wasnt being provided the next day. this information wasnt provided freely. however meals were being cooked. what was even worse was that a corporate booking of 4 people were provided with breakfast the next day whilst we looked on hungrily ..... disgraceful

Lovely restaurant. Fish and chips were cooked well, looked good and were a generous portion. The Gypsy tart left me bemused . It was served upside down, with the thinnest layer of filling which was still frozen! I love Gypsy tart so this was disappointing for me.

Aldo and his team provided a buffet and space for my Husbands funeral wake. The area was set out with great thought, flowers and candles, the buffet was excellent and the staff were constantly clearing tables, replenishing hot and cold drinks, and keeping the buffet topped up and tidy and even bringing out extra hot chips. A first class experience that made a very difficult day easier, a massive thank you to all concerned

Comfortable room, slept well. The mini fridge, iron, and ironing board came in very handy. There were also tea & coffee facilities in the room. Our room was off the courtyard and very convenient and easy access to the highstreet with all the shops etc. Our room was a little tired in places, and we were unable to open the bedroom window, so hubby was a tad warm at times. We would definitely stay again.

Nice clean rooms everything you could need supplied. However room set around the courtyard beer garden. Very loud with pub goers shooting and singing at top of voices. Couldn’t have window open as you could smell smoke. Breakfast ok but bacon was streaky and had hardly been in frying pan. Ptobably won’t stay again due to noise.

SO RUDE. Popped in to meet a friend for a few drinks, I had an empty can of drink in my hand as hadn’t seen a bin outside. I was looking around for my friend in each area and as I left the room, I assume, the Manager, rudely and abruptly shouted from his bar stool ‘bringing your own drinks in are we’. It was extremely unprofessional and I felt very unwelcome. We decided not to stay and went over the road where we were warmly welcomed and ended up having lunch as well. Highly recommend The Cross Keys Inn.

Yesterday was my second meal in the angel. My first time eating there in the summer, I chose eggs benedict. Sauce and eggs were good, muffin was terrible..... Myself and my partner went for the Sunday lunch menu yesterday. We chose roast beef for £16 each. Was very nice apart from the beef. It was processed, sliced packet stuff that you can find in supermarkets. We were expecting something better. Service and staff were very good though.....

Very pleasant meal, not a vast menu selection but enough to choose from. Prices reasonable and all the food we had was very good, with good portion size. The atmosphere in the front bar area and lounge seemed quite nice but further back in the restaurant it all seemed a bit dull and dowdy. The service was ok - efficient but not particularly welcoming - the lad who served us seemed rather nervous and unsure of himself. Overall though a reasonable experience.

Went here for breakfast . Ordered scrambled eggs. Waited 40 minutes then cancelled and went elsewhere. You need to get a chef who can cook multiple meals at the same time, not wait for one order to cook before starting the next. It's not difficult to cook more than one order check at a time, especially when scrambled egg on toast can be done in under 5 minutes. Also. Had to wait and age for coffee. Plenty of staff but little organisation it appears. Won't be going back.

Went on a quiet evening and was told we could sit in the garden, and that someone would be with us shortly. Numerous staff passed by over the next 10 minutes, but were more interested in chatting to their mates on a couple of other tables. Then went inside to ask if someone could come serve us, to which the barman replied with a smirk “I guess so”, and made it seem like I was being demanding for wanting to be served. So I told him it’d been 10 minutes to which he replied “Yes?” as if that was totally acceptable. Incredibly rude and happy I left! Went over the road for proper service, and good drinks.

We arrived on a Thursday evening, the waitress acknowledged us and wiped the table and seated us. We explained it would be one quick drink as only had around 40mins. The waitress walked away without advising how to order or if she would be back with us shortly. We waited and waited, no acknowledgement from her again or from a gentleman who I guess was the manager. We carried on waiting then decided after 20 minutes to leave as we were running out of time and still not acknowledged by the staff-even though there were 5 tables outside. The pub looks lovely but be prepared to wait a while for your drinks!

...Good because we only popped in for a coffee at 11:30am last Saturday, and ended up staying until nearly 4pm! The four of us found a sunny table on the quiet outside terrace, where only about a quarter of the tables were occupied. Coffee turned into drinks, which turned into lunch, which then became more drinks.... The food was great, with excellent toasted sandwiches, and the wine was also good value. Service was prompt and efficient by the young lady behind the bar. Covid precautions were taken, with the toilets in particular being very clean. So our coffee stop turned into a £100+ shill-out, but between four of us, over four hours in a nice sunny setting, we thought it very good value.

Booked a table for two to have a Boys Lunch Out. A convenient location because we travelled from opposite directions / Goatacre and Toothill. As retired pals we were looking for a comfortable venue and a decent Pint; food was really an after thought. Our table was in the front lounge with comfortable armchairs. Dan was our waiter who promptly delivered our Pints to us. Conversation and The Beer flowed and we enjoyed the reunion. Our meal order was taken after the drinks were delivered and because of the banter we did not notice that quite a time passed, then we realised that the food had not appeared. I approached the bar to ask for a progress report; we had noticed that three tables of folks who had arrived after us were all enjoying their lunch! After another wait the meals arrived. A Salmon and Cheese wrap and a Sandwich. The food was satisfactory but nothing outstanding. Because we were out to enjoy our get-together we did not have great expectations. Dan did his job well and The Beer 'hit the spot'. On the other hand the food was ordinary. Would not place the same order again. We will consider The Angel for our next meeting.

On arrival seemed like a nice place to eat with our grandchildren.Ordered food waitress was very good and helpful couldn't fault her. Went to order drinks Asked for a perk I with a splash of lemonade the bar lady put 1/2 pint of lemonade in the glass I corrected her. They ran out of Diet Coke on tap as they had a busy bank holiday so it was off. Offered 2 cans which ids cheaper I quote 1 hot and 1 cold but offered ice !For got the orange Jucie and lemonade I asked for but did it when I reminded the lady. Then the food arrived , my husband and grand daughters was fine but my grandson and my fish and chips was very poor for £14.95 it watched thinnest and smallest piece of fish I've seen especially fir the price. We asked for the bill and they charged 1.50 for 2 tablespoons of beans which I challenged and the waitress who was very good gave me £1 back.Twice I was asked if we enjoyed our meal and twice I said the fish was very poor and I wouldn't of paid £7.00 for it never mind £14.95.I did pay full price as no one really cared or was interested and we had 2 very tired children with us.If you want yo over pay and have a disappointing meal this is definitely the place to go.I'm being totally honest and this is based on our experience 30/08/19☹️

Walking down the high street of Royal Wootton Bassett you would not feel like you were about to step into what feels like a boutique hotel atmosphere- an absolute pleasure. A week day lunch time was quiet and we had the pick of many tables. We picked a table by the window to watch the shoppers go by. Pleasant and polite service. Great decor very welcoming sophisticated and made you feel special with out saying a word. Great selection on the lunchtime menu we opted for the club sandwich with chunky chips and the portion size was very decent and the flavours were spot on delicious! Regular bar selection of drinks and yummy looking homemade granola slices if you wanted just tea and cake. Could not fault this place and will definitely visit again.

Not sure what really to say as could just go on with lots of negatives. Must have been a bad hair day as all the staff were miserable, scruffy and seemed like they didn't want to be there (apart from the young lady serving) Food was mediocre at best and a bit undercooked - but finding a hair made me gag. We arrived at quite a quiet time and ordered and paid for lunch at the bar. The drinks took nearly ten minutes to arrive, the starter of bread and olives over 20 minutes. Not to worry we thought. The main should be worth waiting for so we waited... And waited... And waited. 45 minutes in and we were asked if we were still waiting for our food. 20 minutes after that we were assured our meals were just being plated up. Food emerged from the kitchen, but not for us. More food... Still not ours. Realising there was now no possibility of enjoying the food if it ever arrived, we gave up and asked for a refund. Half hearted apologies were given and a refund only for the main courses. Really thought they'd at least give us our drinks on the house! Can't believe I wasted an hour and a half in this place. Plus it was chilly and the toilets were dirty.

My friend and I chose the Angel for lunch and from the outside it looked cosy, with a log fire. We were given menus by a young waitress but then waited an unacceptably long time before we were approached again, even though the restaurant was not over-busy. Two sets of two adults arrived after us but were attended to before us. Finally my friend went to the reception area and asked when our order would be taken. An older lady came to take our order, steak ciabatta twice. She returned later to ask if we had ordered the steak ciabatta??? One of the couples had finished their meal before ours was brought. Unfortunately it was warm, not hot and most of the steak was inedible, fatty and chewy. This was the case for both of us. We told the young waitress who took the food away and came back to say that the price would be removed from our bill. Of course. We then erred on the side of caution and both ordered the ciabatta with home-made fish fingers and tartare sauce. This was served at a good temperature and was fresh and tasty. However, this was not the lunch we had hoped to enjoy together and in all we spent two hours in the restaurant due to the initial long wait and also the need for a second order to be brought to table. This left us little time to do the shopping we had planned before we needed to return to the car park.

Breakfast was not good.Orange juice was almost empty and not good quality bread had to be toasted and coffee and tea in "urns". We were looking for a nice pub to have lunch and decided to try The Angel. My husband had the roast dinner and I had Fish and chips. I ordered fish bites, chips and peas for my 2.8 y/o daughter and for my surprise our plates were exactly the same! The difference was how it was platted the the price!!! The point for ordering fish “bites” is because she could eat alone and it’s more appealing to her. She did not eat and we ended up bringing her food home. The price for the kids meal was £6 and they charged £8,45. We complaint and they gave us the difference. Customer service there was disappointing.

The selection of draughts on offer isnt often that great and the drinks are in the upper range on the price scale. Regarding the food it has been a mixed bag. I have been here when they had a class chef (it was exceptional, a real gastro pub) and another time well.. when they didn't. However I haven't eaten in a few years so i will exclude that from my review. This is a great place for a group seeking a relaxing establishment with comfortable seating.

My partner and I had a terrible experience and meal at this establishment. He has already left a review about an awful meal we have had recently, and I felt compelled to also review as he got an untruthful, slanderous and unprofessional response from the manager and not to mention that food and service I received was nothing short of tasteless rubbish and poor! The staff seemed not have a clue. Ordering a steak with seasonal vegetables and potatoes instead of chips would be quite simple you’d have thought?? And we asked if we could have carrots too - and the manager said he would go and find out if they had any [carrots] and let us know. He never returned to say they didn't have any - so when the steak arrived with chips and onion rings, instead of (very simply) of new potatoes and seasonal veg to include carrots, we told the waitress it wasn't what was ordered. She said she would go and get the seasonal veg (the very same SEASONAL VEG the manager pointed to on the menu when asked if it was possible during ordering and he said no problem) The potatoes (NO SEASONAL VEG) arrived 15 minutes later (the manager claims 7 minutes so not sure what timer he uses) my partner had already eaten his steak, but not the chips as he does not particularly like chips. It completely ruined the evening and the 'free’ small bottle of cider just didn’t cut it. The manager seems to think the bill was £70, when in fact it was around £54. He said the drinks amounted to £24 yet, firstly I was driving (so not drinking) and had a weak Shandy, and my partner had 2 bottles of cider. Hardly £24 worth of drink unless we’ve also been ripped off?? Someone can’t add up it seems and another unprofessional exaggeration. On paying the bill, we did complain to see if something could be done with the bill – yet to be offered only a free bottle of drink and not to be charged for the Veg that we didn’t have was rude, insulting and unprofessional. At no point were we offered £10 off. Another lie. At this point we said if nothing can be done, we’ll simply pay 10% of the bill and discuss the rest at a later date, a law you can use if need be in the UK when you get a bad meal. Now the manager is trying to infer we have done this before (we’ve not) and used slanderous language which my partner is now going to instruct solicitors to sort out. We will now be claiming a full refund for what we did pay for the shoddy service (luckily paid for by credit card) and bad meal and escalate this matter until sorted no matter how long this will take. The bad food and service ruined a birthday meal, so we shall take our business to better eateries on the same street as the Angel really isn’t that good or professional. Living mostly in Spain, when we do venture home to Wootton Bassett, we often like to eat out and this is simply the worst place in this town. A very disappointing restaurant with poor quality food and extremely bad, unprofessional service. We look forward to getting a full refund.

Ok. So thought I'd have a nice meal with my partner for my birthday. Splashed out on a £25 aged steak and asked for it with new potatoes and seasonal vegetables (and carotts if poss) No problem I was told. Then it turned up with fries and onion rings??? So waitress took it away for 10 seconds and then put it back on the table and said she would get the vegetables. 15 minutes later, I had finished eating the meat when a bowl of potatoes arrived???? Too late I said and also, where are the vegetables??? Total disaster. A poor weak "I'm sorry" was all she could muster.

Visited on 1 December for drinks during Christmas Lights evening in Royal Wootton Bassett. Mulled wine £5.95 compared with £3.00 at Cross Keys across the road! Requested a coffee later in the evening, but was advised not serving coffee which surprised me as this is an hotel. Then visited the ladies and found no toilet paper available. It was a busy evening but no excuse.

Stayed one night at the Angel but was pleasantly surprised. The hotel was really good value as I got breakfast as part of the deal. Charming look as it was all done for Christmas and felt warm and welcoming. The staff were attending and friendly but never intrusive. The room was in the new part of the hotel at the back and there are no phones in the room so any queries you would have to go back to reception. But the room was extremely clean and warm and I didn’t have any cause for complaint.

Rooms, clean, comfortable and smart. WiFi not working. Breakfast was good with plenty of choices. Evening meals beautifully presented and delicious, though portions from the a la carte menu were small. Choose from the bar menu if you are hungry. Staff friendly and helpful. The older part of the building has lots of charm with a big open fire in the longest bar.

Had a few rather below average experiences at The Angel previously but it’s under new management & we wanted a local venue for intimate family supper so decided to give it another go....

We went for supper last night ... a bit 'spit and sawdust' as you walk in but don't be put off, there is a quiet dining room at the back. Small but interesting and innotive menu, plus some of the more classical pub food. We chose a more fine dining option - starters were homemade tagliatelle with black 'trompettes' and the quail. For the main course we had the breast of duck and the roasted cod with cauliflower. A delicious chocolate parfait ended the meal. The portions seem a little small, but in fact are beautifully balanced and allow you to happily eat three courses. Other diners were having enormous fish and chips and also the chateaubriand which looked fabulous. Good service, friendly staff ... although they need to walk a little slower as I was starting to panic with them! Well worth the visit.

Went here with friends for a meal at the weekend. We were warmly greeted and shown to our tables. The menu was a bit limited. Most of us had the steak. My steak was very tough and didn't have a great deal of flavour. Chips were very good. One of us ordered the belly pork, when they ordered it, the waitress said it wasn't very big and she might like to order some vegetables to go with it! Again the meal was ok.

Th Angel is an old pub in the town, been through some reincarnations, currently more of a restaurant than a pub. It has a pleasant, light front room , a good, plain bar at the back and some dark and fairly claustrophobic rooms in between where food is also served. The food is, to be fair, very good and would warrant an excellent rating for the hotel if it were better kept and managed. The staff are generally friendly and good at their jobs but when rowdier clientele arrive they don't really manage problems well. Another point to be aware of, smoking is, obviously, only allowed outside but this place does allow vaping indoors. For me that's enough to deter me from going there in the evenings, I've has several instances of 'aggressive vaping' in there, people making sure they exercise their 'right to vape', in vast clouds of unnecessary waste and unpleasantness for those of us who don't indulge. But again, using the place during the day has been very enjoyable..

We stopped in RWB for lunch and were attracted by the signage and decor of the front of The Angel. We ordered battered fish and chips and loved the whole meal that came with the loveliest mushy pea purée and some home made tartar sauce. Truly wonderful.

Just returned from a 2 night stay here. Hotel has been refurbished to a very hight standard throughout. Our room was in the Courtyard at the rear of the Hotel. Lovely cosy room with a nice bathroom, toiletries, iron & board, hairdryer and a fan in the wardrobe. All lamps & soft furnishings were of a high standard. Tea tray stocked well with glass bottled water which was replenished. Ate in the restaurant the first night, typical pub grub, slightly over priced and fancily served i.e burger on a chopping board, with a separate dish of fries, and 2 further pots of sauce...local ale was good. Breakfast on both mornings was faultless. All in all a pleasant & comfortable stay.

Main review on the Hotel side. However to be charged £2 for extra gravy when having the pie is a real low.Speaks for itself when that happens.Next they will be charging for extra napkins or to have other condiments. Poor.

My husband and I had a meal here 3rd June. My steak was over cooked although I asked for a medium, my chips and my husbands fries were very over cooked and the peppercorn sauce was watery. The waitress didn't return to ask if ours meals were ok although she wasn't busy, just chatting to other staff. Was given 10% off our bill.

Good starters first day - 3 for £12 to share: squid with garlic mayonnaise; crispy chilli beef; mozzarella and tomato. Husband had pork - rather dry. I had chicken in breadcrumbs with parmesan sauce which was awful. Two pieces of chicken in breadcrumbs in a dish covered in cheese sauce and tomato slice which had then either been put in the oven or kept under a heat light because the ends were dry and, where covered in sauce, the breadcrumbs were soggy and tasted quite unpleasant. This was deducted from the bill. Second day no starters, steak pie which was OK and fillet steak was OK but rather expensive. Peppercorn sauce just tasted like cream with peppercorns in it. Dessert of white chocolate cheesecake with raspberries was lovely and we also shared a cheeseboard which was good (but had to ask for the chutney). Evening service was good. Like the hotel, we found the Angel restaurant to be inconsistent.

Been many times before but not often for breakfast.Still the same staff, lovely quaint interior with a welcoming front portion where you can sit and watch the world go by on Bassett high street.Menu was varied enough to suit all tastes. I though the previous time I visited it was more expensive, this time around it seemed really reasonable, especially for the quality of the food.I'm sure to revisit in due course, a bit of a banker for a quality brekkie

Both enjoyed dinner at the angel this evening. Good service, very tasty food, especially the white chocolate cheesecake. The dessert was delayed due to a problem in the kitchen. Bill was reduced without us complaining. So really pleased with how things went.

I had steak n chips. £24 for just the steak, mushroom and tomato. Meat wasn't great, would expect a proper cut of meat for that price. The chips have to be ordered separately, but they weren't fresh from potatoes, they were the big fat sort that don't taste like proper chips. Overall for poor quality steak chips and a soft drink it cost £30, not at all worth it. Service was ok though and it was a nice enough place.

Haven't visited The Angel for about 50 years, the food at that time were crisps with a few rolls. The inside was easily recognized as I remembered it, but when the food came.. WellI was plesently surprised. It looked good and tasted even better, the mussels were plump, with a tasty sauce, my wife's option also looked and tasted good.I even had to have a dessert. The service was excellent, and the waitress seemed to be happy in her job.It was an enjoyable visit, and I will not wait anther 50 years before our next visit.

We decided to visit The Angel for dinner with friends. We had been there before on several occasions but this was probably the best experience so far. The staff were very friendly and helpful and there was a Specials board in addition to the main menu. We all ordered different choices and each of us were delighted with our food. The local lamb dish was delicious and the meat was perfectly cooked. The starters were good and the desserts were lovely, done with imagination and an unusual but delightful twist. We all enjoyed the evening and were very well looked after by all the staff, including the manager who was very attentive. We are local to Royal Wootton Bassett and are so pleased that The Angel is offering such good food in a comfortable and welcoming environment. Thank you!

We recently come here for business lunches on Friday's to get out the office. The sandwiches are so fresh & the bloomer bread is amazing. Massive sandwiches with great fillings! Couldn't fault the food or staff here. Staff are very friendly and quick to serve you. Great varied menu and not overpriced.

A good reputation for fish, lobster etc. Despite this the battered fish was disappointing as the batter was not crisp and the fish had not been skinned

The title of this review sums up our experience. The food was pretty good although the venison casserole was disappointing as the gravy/stew was a .little watery and there could/should have been more venison and vegetables in it. The service was okay but again could have been better. Would recommend as mid price local optio with good ales if in the area.
