We decided to have our wedding reception here and Emily was amazing from the very 1st time we spoke with her and all the way through to the big day Nothing was too much trouble we had a couple of people with dietary needs and these were catered for with ease Then the big day arrived where Emily's other half Richard took over with the cooking and omg he done us proud , feedback from all the guests was positive 100% Massive thank you to you both and your staff for making it happen

Came for Sunday lunch with the family, first time we had visited but thought that after seeing the mail top 100 pubs we should give a go. Roasts were great, I had roast sirloin of beef, cooked medium rare which was lovely and my fiancée had a shank of lamb. Our roasts came with a brilliant selection of veg including red cabbage which I don’t normally like but was really nice. We shared a carrot cake for pudding but only because I couldn’t fit one of my own in! All in all it was a lovely (and rare) meal out which was unhurried and was a lovely place to be.

Amazing doesn’t do it justice! The food is exemplary. You are always made welcome, no matter how busy, or what may be going on. Me and my children love it here. The owners are clearly working so hard and striving to achieve the best, which they are doing. Thank you for another lovely day. We will be back very soon!

I got taken here by my family for my Birthday meal.Pulling up and first impressions wasnt great barking dogs in the pub entrance and generally just looks a little run down outside. The waitress sat us at our table we were the only ones in there so unfortunately was realy lacking in any atmosphere it was way too dark in there and couldn’t read the menu without using flash lights on our phones!Ordered drinks which tuned up promptly and took food order.Bread was nkce and then starters was very good.Main course turned up around 10 mins later and that was nice and well cooked.Couldn’t fit in a dessert.Overall the service was good but the pub lacked in atmosphere and needs renovating and better lighting inside the restaurant couldn’t failt the waitress on the night bit did find it expensive and not value for money.

I grew up in Watlington, having left very many years ago, for one reason and another we decided to return to the village to have our son baptised at the local church. Looking for somewhere to hold a lunch for over 30 of our closest friends and family from all over the country and overseas, I was a little hesitant to check out the Angel, but to have gone anywhere else would have been a terrible mistake! Having seen the great reviews and awards on the Angel website I made contact some months before the event. The whole thing was arranged remotely through contact with Emily, the owner - she could not have made things easier, spelling out the options, making recommendations for a local company that could supply me a celebration cake and basically making my every request a reality without any issue at all. For event planning, she is one of the best I have worked with and gave me tremendous peace of mind. On the day everything was seamless and the food was excellent, 31 roast dinners, including vegetarian and vegan options came out within moments of each other, no one was waiting and we all sat down together to generous sized dinners, the same with drinks for a toast. The staff dealt with everything almost invisibly and all our guests bar none commented on how good their meals had been. We took over the middle room of the restaurant for the whole afternoon, and had time and space to socialise after dinner. It really was everything we could have hoped for our special day. Massive thanks to Emily and her team (I'm ashamed it's taken so long to get to writing this review, but I was determined to do it)!

Well no surprise here, but another amazing night at the angel! 10 year wedding anniversary with Jeremy, child free, and a constant flow of pimms! We shared a charcuterie for starters, the meats absolutely beautiful! For mains I had the dressed crab, and the hubby had a fillet steak. Both extremely happy with our mains, his steak cooked to perfection, and my crab was just perfect! Shared a Bakewell tart for pud, then finished our night off watching the footy in the side bar area! As always, thank you to all the staff, everybody was so lovely and brilliant, the food was 10/10, we look forward to seeing you soon!

The food was lovely BUT we arrived for a 7 pm meal & didn't even get the menus until nearly 8 o'clock! After complaining, we were seated in the dining room & finally ordered our food. Lots of bread later we eventually received our food at 5 to 9! Not my idea of good service.

Expectation was more than met for our first visit. Warmly welcomed and shown to our table. Generously sized with comfortable dining chairs. Tables are well spaced out. Room is modern in decor and clearly recently renovated with a touch of flair. Food was lovely, nicely presented and cooked to perfection. Obvious talent in the kitchen. Menu has great choice. We ate mains and delicious puds. Loos were exemplary in fittings and hygiene. Easy parking to side and rear. Several dog guests besides ours accepted without fuss. Thank you. We shall return soon.

Visited THE Angel at Watlington today for Sunday lunch. Were not disappointed. From the moment we stepped through the door, we were greeted by very friendly staff. It has a lovely relaxed atmosphere & was a lovely place to enjoy our lunch. We were looked after by Lauren & she did a grand job. When we sat down at our table we noticed it had a slight wobble, before we could even mention it Lauren was there & crawled under the table to sort it. Service above & beyond.😀 We all had the roast beef which was delicious & served with lots of fresh veg which was nice to see, so often now the veg is extra which always annoys me. Lots of lovely gravy which came on the plate with the beef, Yorkshire & roast potatoes. Happy lady as I love lots of gravy, however my hubby is not a big gravy eater, so maybe the option of gravy in a jug would have been better for him. Of course we all had to find space for one of the delicious desserts & were not disappointed. Lauren looked after us very well and checked on us numerous times to see if we needed anything, she is a credit to The Angel. In fact all the staff were very polite & good at their job. We will definitely be back & will highly recommend The Angel to all our friends. Thank you for looking after us so well. Ann Desroches

We had a family meal for 9 with ages ranging from 5-75! It was genuinely the best Sunday roast I have had in a restaurant. Warm welcome, great portions of top quality food. Food was fab. I had sirloin steak, wife had venison & we shared Creme Brulee desert. All high quality ingredients(no chemical tasting food in here), good sized portions, beautifully cooked. Staff were great too and ambience seems better since refurbishment. Service can be slowish, waiting for the freshly cooked food, so don't be in a hurry or expect cheap prices. This is quality food & service.

The Angel have done it again! First meal after the refurb with the hubby and kids, and 5 stars from all of us! The pub looks absolutely amazing! From the new wallpaper to the baby changing facilities, you guys have smashed it! Now onto the food… anyone who knows me knows I am a sucker for the duck breast, but my oh my I thought I’d change it up a bit this time and go for the fillet of pork… so glad I did! I have quite possibly got a new favourite meal! Hubby had the lobster which he has been raving about all evening, and the kids had their chicken goujons. We shared a chocolate and praline parfait dessert and oh was that the perfect way to end the night! My personal favourite change, is the wine list! There was so many to chose from! We shared a bottle of rosé from Burnham Market and it was absolutely gorgeous! On a last note, the staff were extremely helpful and attentive, and we are excited to see you again soon for our anniversary meal!

Myself and my partner had been here before last year for our anniversary and the food was so exceptional, unlike anything I had ever tasted. So naturally we decided to attend again to celebrate a belated birthday, and we were confident that our expectations would be met again. We were seated, drinks ordered and then food ordered. The restaurant wasnt particularly busy, we waited just over an hour for our food - (which I was initially a bit agitated about) but honestly, that was entirely dissipated once we got our food. You can tell it’s all cooked from scratch and it was beautiful. Here’s where the unfortunate part plays out. We finished our food, and our plates were cleared and the waitress asked whether we would like to see the dessert menu, which we earnestly said we would. I think she then forgot, was going around clearing tables and chatting to other staff at the bar. We waited another 20 mins or so trying to catch her attention, but then as it was already so late, we decided to just pay and leave as if we asked for the menu now we would have probably been eating incredibly late. Such a shame that the service was slow, as otherwise I would have loved to write another glowing review.

Sunday roast being the best I have experienced in the area! Such a fabulous menu for a local village pub. With Richard in the kitchen & Emily front of house, a match made in heaven … nearly as good as the frangipani tart with lavender ice cream! ❤️

This was supposed to be a birthday treat for my partner, upon arrival we were seated and I have to say for a newly refurbished resturant it was a bit drab, wallpaper pealing in the toilet and paint not very well applied. We ordered our meal and waited for our starters, and we waited some more. After asking the waitress where our starters were after 45 minutes they arrived 5 minutes later. The starters were ok but did not match the way they were written in the menu. The mains took another 40 mins. My partner had the lobster with prawns and scallops, the lobster was over cooked and chewy the potatoes were verging on raw and there were no scallops. The waitress was told about the lack of scallops which were served once we had finished our meal. I had the sea bass which the skin was not scaled so I had to keep removing fish scales from each mouthful. We told the waitress of our disappointment but no refund was given for the poor meal. The service from the waiting staff was good though let down poor food.

Firstly I would say the the female staff were very good, The pub was not very busy when we arrived at 12 30 for a table of 13, ten adults and 3 children we all ordered our meals one was a vegan and another a vegetarian, which should not have made any difference to the time it took from order to Finnish, by the time we sat down to have a two course meal took two and a half hours, to say slow it was like waiting for a bus, when the food came, a starter was wrong, also a main meal was wrong, with no apology forth coming from the management, poor service, two glasses of white wine were returned as poor but again nothing said? I had a pawn cocktail but the pawns were warm, May be they were frozen? Also I had a stake to which a third was fat but what was left was well cooked I would sum this up as nothing special, but the price was on the high side, the total bill for us was over £450, with all the problems we had, No apology’s not even the offer of a coffee it has some way to go to get us back. With regards to the interior of this pub it needs some attention and the toilets were very poor, both sexes. When you look at the Webb site it looks very good, when you look at the prices you think you would get the service and quality but in reality beware before you book.

Visited the angel tonight, we live close by so was hoping it was going to be good so it would become a regular. The service was ok. The main issue was the food took an hour, however, when the food came it was really nice. Didn't have time for dessert as needed to get home. No kids menu. And slight observation, the restaurant area smelt slightly of smoke. 4* because of the nice food.

Saying that the food was very nice, I had scallops for starters and gnocchi for main. Hopefully these are just teething issues as the Angel is local to us and we would like to visit again. The Angel looks like a fairly smart village local, but the food is of far higher quality than you would expect in such a place. I was really impressed by our meal. The tables were well spread, and the service pleasant and efficient. the only cask ale on offer was Doom Bar. There is also a delicatessen It seems that it is a bit undecided as to whether it wants to be a high end food outlet or locals bar, which at the moment offers a window of opportunity for those who want really good food at pub prices.

I don’t need to really justify how happy I was with the food that I had made for me and my family. Let me just start with the garlic and chilli prawns. Beyond exceptional. The duck I had was cooked to perfection with a lovely red wine sauce. The vegetables Seem to have been el Dante, classically cooked. Not too cooked so it simmers away at the flavours. The wait is very acceptional considering it is cooked to order. And the desserts, well. I see the chef preparing them to be cooked and plated up. The best food and the best pub around. After shielding for the last few months we decided to bite the bullet and go out for a meal. After we had an amazing meal for a Birthday in February (one of the last times we got to go out) we decided to go back to the Angel for a date night. When we got there the pub was busy and there was a lovely atmosphere. The food was as brilliant as last time, we even saw a delivery of fresh veg happening as we were dining. So glad we came out and we really felt safe after not being in this situation for ages. there were plenty of sanitisers around the whole building and cleaning rotas in the toilets evident for all to see. We had a lovely relaxed meal and a few cheeky wines. We avoided the eat out to help out as to be honest we felt that that would be too busy after not being out for so long but there was still plenty of atmosphere without it. Thanks for a lovely meal and we will be back again as soon as we get a babysitter again.

At a last minute decision, myself and my mother decided to stop off at The Angel for some lunch before starting work. From start to finish, the staff were incredibly kind, taking us to a table and making sure we had drinks from the very beginning. When the waitress came to take our food order my mum was undecided between the Belly of Pork or the Chicken breast. The waitress gave her advice on the food and told us in detail what each dish was served with, and helped us come to a decision. The wait for the food was not long as I was aware that the very talented chefs in the kitchen cook all of their food fresh to order and everything is homemade - so I expected a longer wait! When the food came out, I was so impressed by the amount of food we were given, it was enough to feed a family of 20 for a month!! The waitress told us the plates were quite warm and we should be carefully when we touch them. My steak was cooked to perfection, and had been done just as I had asked it to be!! We were so happy with the food and the service, as well as the reasonable price that we paid at the end! We will definitely be returning to The Angel! Thank you to all the team there! Overall the experience wasn’t great they ran out of Amstel and the Guinness my husband had was awful and I ended up ordering two drinks at once as the service was so slow, the food was nice but cold, plates were cold, no cutlery and basically needs some work to make it a nice experience two hours ten minutes for a below average two course meal didn’t stay for desert as we had work in the morning!

Thought we would give this a try as other reviews good and seem to have a decent main menu as well as sunday roast.Firstly no bitter available as had run out (sunday afternoon visit) this probably set the scene for the rest of the visit. As we looked at our options for a starter we all decided that nothing really took our fancy and so 3 ordered sunday roast which had 3 options chicken, beef and pork, and comes with seasonal veg and a homemade yorkie pud, unfortunately not the hottest meal, however the extra pot of gravy was very hot and the yorkie pud was nice, we had to ask for condiments and the salt and pepper appeared in what I consider to be a most unhygienic vessel, a small dish which you place your fingers in along with any other tom dick or harry ( can only hope that the previous finger dippers had clean fingers ☠)the roast beef was pink (which the waitress did warn about) but I don't mind this, however it was extremely tough and I could of done with a steak knife to cut through it!1 had pie from the main menu which was ok.As we all felt a little underwhelmed by our meal thus far we awaited the arrival of the dessert menu, which was so disappointing and the only option I would of liked they had run out of! We all decided to abandon the dessert menu.I like to give constructive feedback and I would say the only good thing this place has going for it is the attentive staff (even though we had to ask for condiments which should of been on the table with the offer of horseradish sauce etc) the other good thing was the homemade yorkie pud!

Dinner with friends to celebrate a new job. We thought we would give this a try. Very disappointing, the menu on the website was out of date despite checking that morning. Waitress apologised that it is not updated regularly. The menu offered was not exactly exciting nor were the Specials! When the food finally arrived, (the service was slow and they were not exactly busy) it was not worth the wait, the steak priced at top end £19.95 for a rump was poor, the gammon steak was inedible all grisly and difficult to chew. We did not bother to order a dessert. They did very kindly deduct the gammon steak from the bill, but to be honest would not return. Expected more from a village pub where the food and service needs to impress to stay afloat.

I had lunch with friends yesterday and yet again, it was excellent. Everything was cooked to perfection and it is the best Christmas lunch I have eaten out - apart from last year - when I again ate at the Angel!! Very reasonably priced as well.

We all gathered as a family to celebrate Christmas early. We had notified The Angel in advance that two members of our party had dietary issues with one gluten free and dairy free whilst the other was dairy free only. All food was served with this issue in mind and came with the option of gluten free and/or dairy free or we were informed of which options to avoid. Everything was thought of, so much so that the dairy AND gluten free diner was given her very own Xmas pudding!!! Seriously the food was scrumptious and real care was taken to avoid any issues with the diners food intolerances. As a result, we all relaxed and thoroughly enjoyed our meals and no one had to endure the possible ramifications afterwards of accidentally eating their best avoided substance!Loved the food, loved the atmosphere and a huge thumbs up from us and a massive shout of gratitude from our family too!

We arrived and waited to be shown to our table. After about half an hour we decided to go and find it ourselves. The table was very pretty and we had high hopes for the evening. After a long wait the starters arrived. I had mackerel pate with toast. The toast was cold, but the dish was ok nothing special. After another long wait the main course arrived. It looked good and there was lots of veg. However my order did not arrive then someone came out to say that due to an error myself and another guest would have to choose something else from the 2 spare dishes thay had left over. Not very satisfactory. We declined. They eventually said they would try to make what we had originally ordered. By the time it arrived everybody else had almost finished, I would like to say it was worth the wait but it wasnt , It was a hurriedly made omelette arnold bennet which was drowned/literally swimming in a very thin hollandaise sauce. I dont think I would go here again. The turkey that they brought out did look nice however and fine if you eat meat.

I dropped in on my way back to Leicester and had the best Sunday lunch apart from my wife’s in a long time when eating out the food was well presented tasted fantastic the service was second to none. Only downside. Too much food I couldn’t eat it all but the price was brilliant for what was served. Well done the angel

Moved to Watlington at the end of July and had a couple of very time consuming family issues since been here, so eaten out quite a bit.First "favourite" was the hare arms at stow Bardolph, but this was pushed well and truly in to 2nd place after trying the Angel. We were made to feel extremely welcome by Emily and her team from our first visit. They all do their hardest to make sure that everyone is looked after well and are comfortable and happy. The best thing about the pub though is the delicious home cooked food. I can honestly say we have not had a disappointing meal and always marvel at the quality and value for money. One of the best pubs that we have ever visited and so lucky to have on our doorstep!

Dont normally write reviews but I feel the need so it can be addressed to the management, I rang up on sunday the 10th of November at 12.40 and asked for a table for two I was told sure but they need the table back by 2.30 witch was fine because I was 10 minutes away and as there was an hour and a half I saw no problem, I arrive at 12.50 and shown to my table, after 25 minutes no one had been to take our order even tho the staff could see us just sat there, a man walked in 15 minutes after us and said dont worry I will eat at the bar when I went to pay for my drinks his food had been brought to him. the gentleman beside me was service checked 3 times to see if his food was okay and each time the waitress looked at us and walked past. All tho the food looked very good what the gentleman had ordered I will not be returning. Such a shame

I have been meaning to visit the Angel for a few weeks to sample the food as I usually pass it by to visit other places such as The Hare Arms at Stowbardolph. Well I’m not sure I will be passing it by in the future as the food is just as good as The Hare and many other eateries in the area. I had the steak and mushroom pie and my husband had the suet pudding. These pies were full of meat and very flavoursome. There was fancier food on the menu but I’m not sure you could beat a good old fashioned pie on a Friday evening. Thank you to the Angel for a lovely meal.

Myself and my family booked for Sunday lunch today 29/09/19 . We arrived in plenty of time, drink order taken and paper menu provided, they do not cater for children! You order a smaller portion of the main menu. Well I’m sorry but my Grandchildren will not eat salmon,Venison or anything along those lines. They would have ended up with chips to share so very disappointed to say the least. When I booked for us all they should simple have said we don’t cater for children, simple!

Afternoon tea was fab. Never seen such a variety (and amount) of finger sandwiches, especially the meat, the beef was proper roast beef not the thin prepacked and the gammon ham was so tasty. Great array of cakes and never ending tea. Perfect and unbelievable price. Will def return to sample the rest of the menu. Lovely feel, rustic, cosy but spacious. Loved the decor.

My friends of many years and I visited here this evening and had the best night. We've been here before several times but tonight was quite special as we were looked after very well by Clare who seemed to be on fire as far as customer service was concerned. With a very busy pub on a Friday night she really nailed it and went above and beyond any service I've received around the world to ensure my greetings and I were well looked after. Thank you.

Previous reviews read well so thought would give it a try. Husband ordered the ribs and said they tasty. I ordered pan fried buttered cod as the other fish came with other seafood according to the menu . My pan fried cod them came with seafood which was not listed on the menu. Great that the chef give a little extra . However I can't do seafood and told the waitress to take it away. Some from the kitchen came out and explained that they have an allergy reference in the kitchen which is fine but I did explain that they need to be listed on the menu as I would have not chosen it

We popped into the local pub for a lunch prior to going away on holiday (cupboard bare) but when presented with the menu I certainly did not expect to be offered salmon and caviar or steaks. What happened to the good old fashioned cottage pie, cod and chips, lasagne etc., Its certainly not a place I would take my family to when they come over for a meal as there is not a good enough choice - plain English cooking not masterchef

I met up at this pub with my family from all over the country for a few days at a local large country house. The pub doesn’t do food on Monday but did especially for our family which numbered 10.Everyone without exception loved the food which included a couple of vegan dishes, a salmon dish, various steaks and I had chargrilled octopus on black risotto which was divine. I would certainly recommend this pub.

I had lunch this week with friends, and the food was excellent. Two of us had the pan fried salmon, which was declicious and so tasty. It was served with hot smoked salmon, asparagus, small jacket potato with caviar, beans and samphire. The other friend had the tuna and said it was just as good. No room for dessert, but have had desserts there before and they are to die for. A great pub to have in the village.

We could tell that everyone was trying really hard but I'm afraid that to compare this pub equally to Bilton's just 10-minutes up the road is ridiculous. The food is below par (uncooked poached egg, stodgy brule, pesto from the jar), the decor is psychedelic, verging on unclean and there is nothing about the place which warrants the London prices. Garden is messy, albeit with a small fenced in play area and slide/climbing frame for children. Stick with the traditional dishes and expect a hefty bill, but pleasant service, and you won't be disappointed like we were.

Went to The Angel only to be greeted by bar staff who told us that the Adnams we wanted was out. We then tried for the other hand pulled beer available. After pulling half a pint the flow stopped and we were told after staff member had made a short visit to the cellar( I think) that that beer was finished. No mention of any other barrels which is odd for a pub which is open until 23:00.

The Angel is under relatively new management who have put a lot of effort into smartening up what is a rather quirky interior. It was a quiet Tuesday night, a group of locals drinking in the bar, and just us in the restaurant. The service was efficient rather than chatty but was happy to adjust the menu to our taste. We both had fish, the Sea Bass and the Haddock. The food was well presented and large portions. The fish was especially generous compared to restaurants down our way, Dorset, and well cooked.

We celebrated my sister's 60th birthday in April in the village of Watlington and ate at the Angel on the Saturday evening. We also had lunch there on the Friday to check it out as we were a party of 8 and wanted it to be good. Both meals were excellent and we couldn't fault the food or staff. Really interesting food as well. I had scallops served on a small new potato with a piece of rhubarb between the two. Delicious. The waitress Pippa was very attentive and helpful and the chef came and spoke to us at the end of the meal for feedback. I only gave The Angel a 4 star rating as the place itself is in need of more refurbishment and decoration to make it a really special place to go for a meal. But the food is worth visiting it for.

This was my second visit, I did say the first visit would be my last but decided to give it another go.We picked up menus sat at the table and waited....and waited....and waited! After a hour and despite bar staff, waitresses and even the chef/owner walking past us and doing everything they could rather than look in our direction we decided this was definitely our LAST visit. On our first visit we had to wait more than a hour between courses and we were the only two people eating. There are much better pubs/restaurants in the area so please don’t waste your time visiting The Angel.

Popped in here for a quick lunch at the end of our walk, with our lively springer spaniel, who was made very welcome. We found the Kings Arms staff friendly and welcoming, and we enjoyed excellent sandwiches, sensibly thick and beautifully fresh bread with loads of filling. We thought they were great value, especially given that they were accompanied by salad, crisps and really lovely coleslaw. They really filled us up. It was only a shame that our holiday accommodation is well over an hour away, so we probably won’t be able to repeat the experience soon. We will definitely recommend the Kings Arms.

As regular customers for lunch on Saturdays my partner and I have noticed that the service has got worse. If the owner isn’t there, the young staff who despite doing their best, leave customers for ages before taking orders and don’t notice when customers need them. Today we received our beers but no glasses, then we waited 50 mins for 2 basic mains and a side dish, they came followed by our cutlery. The food is good and the staff are lovely but it’s clear there weren’t enough doing front of house and probably the kitchen, as we weren’t alone waiting ages today. We want to support it as an independent restaurant but the really slow service is putting us off.

Everyone should go here just for the milkshakes. We even had an extra milkshake instead of dessert because they are soooo good. Rayna May was a friendly, efficient, knowledgeable waitress.
