The Angel in Babergh

Table for 4 booked for 730pm. Arrived promptly but put our order for dinner but 3 of our orders were already sold out at 730pm! My goodness, what will will eat they did not have any back ups, and our party had to make do. Come on we booked early in the weekend, and they were not full then, why had they not put extra away in case of over orderring? I do not think this restaurant will survive, come on, they were not even even full!!

My stay at The Angel was completely unplanned. I became stuck in Sudbury due to Storm Eunice and had to find accommodation at 7pm. A phone call to The Angel to check whether they had any availability, the proprietor initially advised that they were closed due to some storm damage and intermittent power, meaning they couldnt open their kitchens. But on hearing my situation they kindly agreed to let me stay, on the proviso that I could manage without breakfast. That was fine with me, I was just grateful of a room for the night. The room was spotlessly clean and very pleasant. The owners could not have been more lovely. I know they have only quite recently taken over The Angel and I wish them all the very best of luck with their venture. I cant vouch for the food, as I didn’t eat, but the room I would highly recommend!

3 had the roast lamb and 2 a home made hamburger. Enjoyed by all including the deserts and the meat is locally sourced

We booked with some reservations due to the constant changes of ownership. But we very happy with our set valentine's meal. The starter of Malaysian chicken and slaw was cooked well and tasty. My belly pork was very tasty and all courses were well presented. My husbands liver and bacon dish was very good too. He enjoyed the quality of the liver with crispy onion rings and bacon.All staff were friendly and attentive and keen to promote the new venture. Exceedingly good value at £25 pp for 3 courses.

After a succession of not very good proprietors had fingers crossed someone had cracked it! Unfortunately, here we go again. No wine list, charged £25 for a £6.99 bottle of wine on sale in Waitrose for £6.99. Every Sunday roast comes with sausage meat and sage and onion stuffing, even the beef 😵‍💫 plus swimming in gravey. Poorly trained staff. Here we go again!!

Lunch booked after a walk along old railway path and through water meadows by the river Stour. Good choice of food options which were all well presented and very enjoyable. Staff friendly and service was good.

Booked and paid for a room a week ago for the Saturday just gone! They took our money, but when we arrived in the afternoon the place was all shut up! A notice on the door saying they were closed and that booking.com should have refunded us! We had not heard from anyone! We tried to phone them several times, but no luck getting anyone to answer! I messaged them on their FB page and despite them reading it, there was no response!We had to quickly find another room for the night in a different location! They are still taking bookings and taking people's money! I would avoid this place at all costs! And at £110 a night, there are far better places out there for cheaper! Very disappointed all round!

Stayed there for 2 nights, the owners are genuine lovely people, they'll go out of their way to do absolutely anything for you! The breakfast is lovely too. They actually gave me another room which was empty to sleep in because my friend snored lol, very much recommended place to stay and a very reasonable price too.😁😁😁😁

Our luxury room had Windows that wouldn't close, a kettle you couldn't fill at the tiny sink, no teaspoon and no bedside cabinet. For breakfast there was no toast and no juice available. Unfortunately the sausages were undercooked in the English breakfast. There were no menus either. The evening meal was almost raw, one couple sent their meals back 4 times. One couple just walked out. There was only one young girl serving meals and bar. There was no information in the room, so we didn't know that the bar and dining room was shut from 6pm on Sundays. We were often left waiting for a drink for over 20 minutes when the staff were talking. The rooms only had one key each, so you had to hand the key to the cleaner when you wanted the room cleaned. The shower cubicle was very high and there were no signs for the many steps in the building. These matters were brought to the managers attention, but nothing was done.

Went for my birthday. Only 3 out of 6 starters available and 2 out of 5 desserts. Table was dirty. Only ordered main course. After an hour it hadnt arrived so we left without eating. They appeared short staffed

Would highly recommend. Really lovely food, very god service. Wouldn’t change anything about the evening!m. I hope they do really well in the future.

I am very sorry to write this review. I know the hospitality industry is going through tough times. The Angel has had several iterations in the five years I've lived in Sudbury. We decided to give the latest one a try. It was quiet but we weren't the only people in there. The waitress was charming. We ordered drinks which were served. We were given menus and she explained some dishes were not available. We made our choices. The youngest member of our group chose a burger. The waitress said they had burgers but no buns. OK. Never mind. The food arrived. It was mostly terrible. I decided mine - Roast chicken breast served with rosti potatoes and seasonal vegetables - was inedible. The chicken was very dry, the rosti potatoes were mashed potatoes thrown into frying pan. The seasonal vegetables was overcooked white cabbage. At least they didn't charge me for it. Restaurants are closing. If you want to succeed you really need to make sure customers will return. Get a proper chef in. I wish you all the best, but I won't be returning.

My wife and I had a delicious Sunday lunch at the Angel today. It is under new management and they seem really keen to understand if we enjoyed the meal and for suggestions for improvements (a nice personal touch). To be honest we couldn’t fault the roast. Big portions and lots of veg and variety.

I would recommend the Angel such a welcoming place. Very clean and the family room was spacious. Beds were so comfortable. Would be coming back again.

Tried to book...then unsure about certain issues, unable to contact the Hotel, disapointed. We were looking forward to a couple of daysref exit of lockdown. So had to decide travelling somewhere else.

We needed a room for the night in Sudbury as we were visiting friends and there home isn’t big enough for the amount of guests invited so we chose The Angel a short 2 minute from their home. For £60 B&B great value for money

I understand with COVID-19 and regulations in place, I personally felt very vulnerable, a lady who appeared to be unwell was coughing and wiping tables without sanitising or washing her hands, this individual was tending the bar whilst also handling equipment and general duties. I most certainly do not want her serving me, I will not be visiting here again.

My sister and I chose to have lunch at The Angel quite randomly as we were close by and didn't know where else might be open. Lovely greeting by a young man - I presume the manager/owner who let us know that he was working alone so we might have a little wait. Due to the current situation he has had to let staff go for the time being. Our food was delicious and the coffee was very good and prices very reasonable. No complaints from us. Will definitely return when the world returns to some sort of normality. Thank you.

A lovely Sunday lunch to celebrate my birthday with my family. We were a large group and had an area to ourselves which was perfect. Very well looked after by Michael and the team. Food was great. Thank you

I visited The Angel at lunchtime on New Year's Day with some members of my family. We were the only people in there. It transpired that a lot of people had booked, but then cancelled. The owners could have cancelled us and not opened, but they did not. The staff were very friendly and good fun. The food absolutely first class and I would highly recommend them to anyone and everyone! I hope they do very well in the future with their new venture - they deserve it!

Definitely worth another try. This has recently changed hands and the food was excellent and good value for money. Friendly service and nice atmosphere (tables not too close together and open fire). Treat yourself!

Visited the Angel with 6 other friends for a the Christmas party meal, although not very busy the meal we had was was cooked, presented and served excellently. 6 of us had the Turkey dinner and one beef dish both of which tasted lovely this was followed by Christmas puds and a selection of cheeses. In all a llovrly meal, good value with nice efficient staff who made us all very welcome, nothing was too much trouble.Will certainly go back again. Archie

We were staying in Sudbury for a few days after not much luck on our first night we found this restaurant.Wonderful welcome ,service was excellent and the sea food platter for our starter was amazing .We all had steak which came with all extras,we were all very happy and very full after our meal.We wish you all the best in your excellent restaurant and if we are in your area in the near future we will definitely visit again.

What a lovely welcome by the new management team they are all very attentive especially Michael and the Sunday roast was very tasty and didn’t leave you feeling hungry as you get very generous portions and good value for money. Very impressed we will be returning soon.Highly recommend!!!

Had a lovely meal. Very traditional British food done to perfection. The garden is a sun trap and the whole place was very stylish and clean. Cant wait to return when back in sudbury, nice to know they have rooms to stay with a breakfast.

Terrible customer service. Mix up with check in times with booking.com and the establishment itself. Not quick to resolve problems, argumentative hosts, made offensive comments whether intentionally insulting or not made no apology for how it came across despite calling to argue about the wording of my original review, giving them ample opportunity to apologise and make a mends but instead insulted us further by accusing us of lying. Dirty rooms with hairs in the shower and sink. Nobody there at check out so we left the key with the cleaner but was then chased down the road like criminals for an extra £12 despite being told the night before that the additional charge was only if we were having breakfast which we didn’t have. Avoid at all costs. Would recommend instead, The Black Boy or The Mill hotel both of which have great attentive and friendly staff

The food is very good and very tasty. It went down well with a glass of the local brew. A thank you to Jason who looked after us extremely well. Also a thank you to the chef who makes beautiful home made bread rolls. We hope to see you again. recommended.

We just walked in of the street and asked if they had a table, they were full, main reason wy we decided to go in, walked past for years, The barman said hand on a MIN, returning shortly after that and guided us to a table, Lots ofpeople for rushed but the staff still helped with the contents of the food. we were not disappointed, left a cash tip

Four of us had three courses and found all of them to be acceptable and quite good value.

We went to the Angel tonight as a bit of a treat for the family, and I also fancied a steak. The starters was promising. After finishing the starters we ordered two wines as well. I ordered my Steak as Medium rare and got it as well done.

Popped in for an impromptu eve meal en route back from friends last Friday. The venue seemed quite pleasant and the menu looked reasonable.

Friendly and welcoming. The Chef knows his trade and if he's out of an item on the menu he offers a great alternative as discovered when a Barnsley Lamb compensated for the absense of the popular Lamb Shank from the menu. The haggis scotch egg was perfectly cooked too. Plenty to offer over the bar with a wide range. Try it, a great little place and close to the town centre of Sudbury. No trouble parking,either.

We decided to treat brother-in-law for his birthday. Starters ordered and arrived, minus a couple of ingredients - the chilli on the chilli nachos and the shaved Parmesan on the garlic mushrooms. Okay onto mains .... 2 of the 3 ok, all ingredients present and correct. Mine, cauliflower and chickpea curry - no chickpeas, green beans instead and the naan had morphed into pita bread. I asked if they had mango chutney, sorry no -isn’t this a run of the mill condiment when serving curry? All in all the food was disappointing though the waiter who was pretty embarrassed by it all did his best to make amends. Would we go back, no sorry, plenty of good eateries out there.

I have just been to the Angel at Sudbury with my partner.We had lunch we have got to say it was a good experience from start to finish.My partner had gammon steak the best he’s ever tasted it was thick tasty not fatty at all.I had rump steak that was also good.We had starters to begin with and we couldn’t manage a sweet yet we both like our food.Dan the front of the house manager was very good he was attentive but not overpowering.The decor was also nice clean and fresh.We will be back .Keep up the good work.

Met with two friends for dinner. A Wednesday night so not busy but nice atmosphere. The Angel is clean, nicely decorated and had a lovely fire burning on a wet winters night.

We had previously been to these premises for a lunch which was fine, so this was a date night and my partner was looking forward to the visit.

Had a splendid lunch at the Angel. Pub has a nice atmosphere and the food was excellent. I had the braised lamb and my husband had the braised venison. Both were superbly cooked and generous portions. Desserts were very good too. Service was friendly and efficient. We will be going again and we are happy to recommend.

This Inn describes itself as gastro pub but it is not as good as I would expect. We ate cauliflower and stilton soup which my friend described as "bland" and I ate Calamari salad which were rather greasy. We followed with Battered Fish and Chips. Fish was good but chips were a bit soggy. Also had shrimp and crayfish salad which was OK. One of us had a Lemon Tart with sorbet. It looked and tasted far from home made. Service was a bit erratic towards the end as I don't think the dining room is visible from the bar. Unfortunately one fellow gust brought along a child in a push chair which yelled for some of the time. Young children should be separated from other diners if there is space, which there was.

I stayed here late Jan what a fantastic place to atay the rooms are amazing and the food was very good. It’s nice and quiet friendly and quaint. The breakfast options are very good and the restaurant in the evening is welcoming. The family that run it really worked hard to make your stay perfect so if your are going to Sudbury area you will kick yourself if you don’t spend a few nights here

have been here before on a groupon but came this time with friends love the scotch egg again and had the massive t bone steak which i had to share as far too much for me after s was tasty baileys cheesecake

We attended a Burns Supper here last week and the food was great.! The Haggis had a very tasty sauce and the Venison main course was excellent. in fact the whole 5 courses were beautifuly presented and served with style and professionalism by the staff.

A very warm welcome with a cosy, homely atmosphere and an inviting open fire. Staff very friendly and attentive. Service good and food delicious. Will definitely be back.

Since my last review in August 2017, sadly, the quality of the food has taken a dive. There appears to have been a revamp of the establishment into a B+B and maybe a change of ownership.

Very nice meal. Delicious cauliflower soup and nut roast. Yummy cheesecake. Open fire lots of space. Good place for a not to rowdy Christmas meal.

We met our son and family from Essex, we travelled from Lincolnshire, for our Christmas meeting up. The food was tasty, the menu was good and the staff were helpful with adapting our requests of the written menu. Very reasonabled priced. Christmas crackers on the table, it was great, a lovely Pub., We will be going back.

We arrived in Sudbury with time to spare before visiting the Quay theatre and decided to walk to the nearest pub for a drink. What a delightful welcome !

Really is the top gastro in the area and easily the best in Sudbury excellent food very consistent. My favourite is the chicken. Yum.

We attended a function at The Angel and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, it was well presented, lovely food, compliments to the chef. The staff were very pleasant and efficient, very nice clean decor everywhere since our last visit, ticks all the boxes.

I met two friends for dinner here this evening. The food was really good. I had the chicken breast which was really moist and sticky toffee pudding for dessert. It was all delicious. The restaurant has a nice relaxed feel and the staff weren’t rushing to get us out. There were several groups eating which is always a good sign on a week night. The pub is tastefully decorated and the building is gorgeous. I will definitely be coming back.

We had a lovely meal but the service let the place down! We had to ask to order mains and then ask to order desserts. I asked for more horseradish I was nearly finished by the time it arrived, staff need to be far more attentive.

Went with a groupon with friends. Excellent large menu. Great attentive staff. Lovely pub and atmosphere. Great presented food. And completely let down by cheap nasty sachet sauces. Serving mains between £15 and £20 then serving sachet sauces in unacceptable! We spoke to the waitress who blamed it on waste.

We held our River Stour Trust end of season social there. They managed to serve 30 of us with 3 courses of excellent food. Piping hot and superb service. I've never eaten there before but certainly will again. First class.

Came here as we had a Travel Zoo deal; £58 for 4 people which included two courses and a glass of prosecco each. The choice on the menu was good and all starters and main courses were freshly cooked and very tasty. We will definitely return.

Good beer, lovely food, fabulous staff and very friendly locals. Highly recommended. As good as any local I’ve been in.

My stay was one to remember. The room was clean and tastefully decorated and I enjoyed a really good night's sleep. The food however was the real star here and I enjoyed a three course meal of calimari for starters, succulent gammon for mains and a tangy lemon tart for dessert ,all of which where faultless. I am definitely coming here again!

Another great evening at The Angel. It was busy but we received good service from the attentive staff. The food is delicious and very good value. We all had starters and can recommend the nachos, mushrooms and scotch egg. I chose the chicken as a main with dauphinois potatoes and it was very well cooked in a lovely sauce. The steaks and burgers are also good. We were too full for desserts unfortunately but they looked great and the presentation is excellent. We all enjoyed the evening and will return soon.

Last week I returned to my original home town of Sudbury. For a very reasonable fee I stayed in a beautiful room and had a breakfast that kept me going the entire 350 miles to Plymouth. Staff are very friendly and helpful.

Went for a birthday meal, staff were polite and friendly. Good service, food was superb, came out lovely and hot. If you like fish , I would recommend the crayfish and prawn rissoto. Thank you for a lovely evening.

This cosy pub is just a few minutes away from the High Street. It has a charming interior, olde worlde yet modern. The menu is extensive and there is a specials board too. Many places have too large a menu to be able to cook everything properly but we could find no fault with our food, garlic mushrooms on ciabatta, haggis Scotch eggs (with properly runny centres) and slow roasted pork belly with ultra smooth mash and creamy leeks. Portions are generous but not overwhelming and presentation is spot on. Prices too are extremely reasonable. There is a garden at the back although too chilly to sit out on our visit. No parking on site but plenty of free parking in town. Highly recommended.

Tuesday evening and our group of girlfriends got together for dinner. Used the vouchers from the local paper which gave us a good saving. Food was excellent service needs some work! Staff were lovely but just not enough of them.

Stayed in room Assington for one night. We weren’t informed were the bathroom was, or when breakfast was which we ended up missing. Although the rooms were very clean and well presented, the bed was absolutely tiny and not appropriate for 2 adults - a 3/4 size maybe, but definitely not a double bed which you expect when you book and pay for a “double room”. We rushed in and out to attend an event so didn’t realise how small it was until gone midnight. As two women under 5”9’ it was too small and the room got very hot overnight but there didn’t seem to be a fan provided. Although this was during the heatwave, the bed being so small and the duvet more suited to the winter made it an uncomfortable stay even with the window (which opens onto the semi-noisy road) wide open. A fan would have helped. Staff were lovely and the place is beautiful but we won’t be returning

We went here for lunch and the service and food was very good. There is a nice garden to have A drink or something to eat. The decor in the pub restaurant is very good. The only drawback is the parking. There is only 1 disabled parking space and no other parking.

Wow! Exceptional little bijoux, bistro restaurant / B&B;, amazing place to stay. Reasonable overnight rates, gorgeous, quirky little rooms, but overall size of room was great. Ensuite lovely. clean, comfortable, airy room, TV, tea&coffee;, hairdryer, towels, bathroom has shower gel etc but no conditioner. Nothing is too much trouble, staff very acommodating, night key is explained, code entry to your rooms. I cannot fault this little place. Very close to Sudbury Town centre. Or walk along the river.

Very good service and food. Tables in the rear garden area too. Very good security, with access to the rooms (all upstairs) being through a door on which a code is to be punched. Owner Jason and staff very friendly. WiFi in the ground floor bar is all right but in upstairs rooms it is patchy. Booked for 3 nights and would have loved to stay all these days. But sadly the lady became ill (not the hotel's fault) after one night and wanted to return home immediately after breakfast. Had to pay for 2 and a half nights in total.

Went to the Angel on a Monday night as a party of 4. Initially sat out in the rear garden which is very nice. Then had a 3 course meal each. Everybody said that all 3 courses were good, ample portions and very tasty. Would definitely recommend the Angel

Just moved to Sudbury and promised ourselves that on the first Sunday in our new home we would visit the Angel. Wasn’t at all disappointed. Very nice starter , followed by a lovely roast , and a great pudding, all wash down with a couple of pints. Just what Sunday’s were made for. Unless your Christian , then I suppose it’s church first then followed by the above.

Had a wonderful lunch at the Angel on Saturday and combined the experience with an overnight stay with breakfast in the newly refurbished rooms. The food was excellent every item well presented and a great menu choice. Varied selection of wines on offer and a cocktail menu. Nice garden in which to enjoy your drinks of a summers evening with log burning patio heater. Would recommend for lunch dinner & breakfast and will definitely be returning. Fabulous staff with great attention to detail.

Have been to the Angel a few times now for food and has always been brilliant , when I found out the pub had B&B; to offer too this was my first choice for friends who were visiting. They were not let down , nice clean fresh rooms that have been decorated to a high standard , the service they received was brilliant and really enjoyed their stay and looking forward to visiting again , the pub offers family rooms as well as double rooms, at great prices !! Highly recommended!!

We had a groupon offer. 2 courses for 2 people with a glass of prosecco each for £29. We haven’t been to this pub for a few years so we’re very sceptical.

Went today for lunch with friends. Myself and my husband had the 3 courses for £18.50. Good deal. Great starter -mushroom & bacon salad, main - roast beef, was too pink even though asked for medium-well and could have done with some parsnips and better veg (less crunchy), great dessert - treacle sponge & custard.

We went for a meal with a Sudbury Mercury coupon offering an 'exclusive offer' and 'saving 56%' The only thing we had 'free' was the dessert which was nowhere near worth the 56% and after several days we are still trying to work out where the saving of 56% was! There wasn't much to choose from for less than the meal we chose and if we had selected any dishes which took the total above £29, we would have had to pay the extra. Also,we hadn't realised that we were even being charged on top for the sauce for the steak! As far as we could see it was not a great offer.

Can’t fault the food it was delicious (with the exception of the onions rings that were cold).... However the service was awful.... We had a table booked for 7.30 and at 8.45 we were still waiting for our food!!!! We waited half an hour for 2 drinks.... Service is everything.... We asked the waitress a question regarding one of the desserts and her reply was “I don’t know” and made no attempt to find out.... (Friday 4th May)

excellent sunday roast at the angel today ,we sat out in the newly refurbished gardens , a huge space for everybody to enjoy .the added bonus is a bouncy castle for the children.

Visited the restaurant in this pub for lunch. It’s nice inside with modern touches despite being an obviously old public house. The staff were efficient and we ordered an omelette, salad and fries for me and shepherds pie for my companion. I also asked for a glass of rose which was very nice. When the food arrived I noticed that the omelette was extremely well done which is not how an omelette should be but I assumed the kitchen didn’t really know how to cook an omelette. On the whole lunch was OK - not wonderful.

We called in Friday with our granddaughter she had an amazing lamb shanks We both had possibly the best burgers ever thanks again guys for the food and great service

Went to the Angel for lunch with another couple and thoroughly enjoyed our meals. The ladies went for fish and chips (enormous pieces of very nice fish) while the gents both went for liver & bacon. Superb! If you've got a sweet tooth then don't miss out on the Caramel & Pecan Pie - it is to die for, and with the number of calories you might just (only joking!). Very friendly service too. Only a small car park (accessed through the archway) but no problem parking along the street.

This was a get together after work with colleagues, so chose a central location for us.

We visited this lovely place again for Easter Sunday Lunch.The food and service could not be faulted.My Roast beef was delicious and served with a smile,I cant wait to visit again !
