My wife and I stayed here for one night as we traveled the Scotland loop. I was drawn to the quirky style and unique opportunity to stay in a different kind of B&B. The dinner was decent, the BBQ chicken wasn't quite what we are used to back home, but the breakfast was delicious. The coffee...so good! I didn't realize how much I missed a decent cup o joe until I drank the coffee here. The staff was really helpful and we had great conversations with the owner and his son who provided laughs and wonderful tips on local sights. We loved the energy of this place and are so glad we stayed outside of Inverness. The surrounding town is really cute and made for a delightful place to walk around.

What a lovely cosy craft bar with an amazing Whisky bar too. If you love local food, this is the place for you, except it has American twist too, check out the menu!! The staff are so knowledgeable about everything, made us so welcome, especially our dog Cameron. If we lived here it would certainly be our local for drinks and food. Thank you for your hospitality Jim.

Trying to be an American smoke house when it’s clearly not, Main bar area really dark tables outside dirty and not enough No room inside for a meal so we had to sit in the bar area Food was really disappointing, got the chicken wings and some mussels and prawns as they had no white bait Main course was ribs in some dreadful sauce, they had about 4 choices and the lamb burger, there was a piece of bread under my ribs which was strange looked like a big mush on a plate, chips were just small average frozen fries Didn’t have a pudding as we decided to leave, went the coop to get a cake each Only positive the Cromarty beer on draft was good. And massive whisky menu Won’t be back

Heard so much about this place but overall it was not quite what I expected. The waiters were quirky but service was very slow and inattentive. They could have made more money if they'd paid attention to our drinks. Food was variable. My mushroom dish was good but family members said the fish and chips were dry and not particularly tasty. They were surprised it was served with coleslaw and not salad. I had the french apple cake for dessert and the sponge was very dry and with very little apples. I didn't have a bad evening here but it didn't meet expectations.

What a place! Found it by accident on an annual NC500 trip last year and were treated to a dog friendly, welcoming pub atmosphere with delicious food at really reasonable prices. The Anderson stayed on our minds so much that when planning our next NC500 trip we factored in a stay here so we could see if the food was a fluke. It wasn't. The pub is exactly how you'd imagine a Scottish pub run by an American would be, charming and cluttered with loads to look at, the selection of whiskey is incredible and the knowledgeable staff helped select a flight of whiskeys for us and assisted the whole way through the menu. The food was delicious and really sensibly priced for loads of food with a great selection of veggie and vegan options. I'd recommend anything with that Boss BBQ sauce. And the butter board (although this was a special). As dog owners, the most important part is how the dog gets treated and our dog was more sad to leave than we were. We were seated in different areas both times, so nowhere is off limits for dog owners, he was fussed (the staff knew the good tickle spots and were clearly dog people) and given FAR too many treats. His name was remembered and he was clearly missed when he slept through breakfast. A lovely stay and one we'll try to factor in to any further trips. Well worth a 10 hour drive.

Food was so delicious esp the American Crack pie, the whole place is super dog friendly, from a rug to chill on while we had dinner and do much attention & treats from staff Mist was very spoilt. Room was compact but had every we needed and was super clean and very reasonably priced. Staff were friendly knowledgeable and fun and the beer & cider was to die for . Having lived in Fortrose for many years we have enjoyed some excellent meals at The Anderson. However on visiting the other night we were sadly disappointed Two of us had the fish and chips which we were told was Coley, it was totally tasteless and the batter was as tough as old boots the chips were skinny frozen chips. One of the group had lamb shank which was very dry and a bit tough. Was told it came in a red wine sauce which turned out to be a form of ratatouille. Mine was slow cooked pork in a creamy sauce e with colecannon, which although tasty, turned into a bowl of thick soup as it got mixed up ,expensive soup at £16.00.The lads waiting were pleasant but obviously lacked experience. There was no bar service, and service in general was slow ,about a 50 minutes wait. Not what we expected from the Anderson!!

A lovely traditional dining room or a cozy traditional bar eating area are both excellent choices of where to sit. The variety on the menu is really good, and our meals, a veggie burger (there are several vegan options) and a salmon and scallops plate, were both great. We have been here several times in the past and return because it has been very good. Unfortunately it seems to have been on a downward drift for a while now. If we didn't know it from the past, our last two visits in particular would not induce us to return.Others have commented on the increasingly scruffy appearance and it certainly needs a refresh in that regard. But service levels, quality of food and range of cask ales all have dropped well below the days when The Anderson was regularly winning awards. There really isn't space to detail all the things that were wrong on our last visit but the service was particular poor.I don't know what the reason for the decline in standards is but they seriously need to up their game. My children have always liked the place and so if there is another request to go here then I am willing to give it one last chance. A visit to The Anderson has been a great night out in the past but I'm not going to keep going there just because it used to be good.

From the outside the building looks old and forgotten. Once inside you are greeted with an awful interior design. The restaurant tries to looks like the house of a scottish grandmother and succeeds. There are two areas, but we only saw one. The walls are covered with old wallpapers that are badly placed and curled up. The windows were damaged, there were leftover staples in the roof and the window covers were a misfit from the rest of the style. And then there is the music. There is a constant organ noise that sounds like it is supposed to be from a catholic church, but is played by a 5 year old. So the ambiance and interrior were just terrible. Then there is the food. We ordered 2 cokes and 2 burgers. The coke tasted like they were either mixed with water or way too old. The burgers were supposed to be medium, instead we recieved them well done. The strange bagel bread bun was completely burned on the edges because of the grill. This made the burger taste like charcoal. The fries that came with it were good though. There isn't much to be said about the service from the waitress. The young lady helped us fine, although she wasn't very concerned when we told her the buns were burned. All in all the food was pretty bad, the interior garbage and the service fine. The reason it gets 1 star and not 2 is because it was also too expensive. It cost too much. Advice: don't go there.

In search of some decent food in Fortrose (not a lot of choice) found The Anderson and popped in for a look - first impression was of a dark and gloomy bar/dining area but a local outside told me the food was superb. Then this American guy, who I took to be the owner or manager, did everything he could to persuade me not to dine with his witless, audacious, condescending manner and conversation. Basil Fawlty went through my head. The customer is king and this king did an about turn and left. The gloom and the hospitality on offer made for an easy decision - we went to Inverness. If you read my other reviews you'll see easily that I am not a serial complainer but this place is deserving of a complaint.

This is a great place with amazing food and atmosphere. The pub is well known for its fabulous, extensive range of beers. The menu changes regularly so you can never get bored. The choices definitely take you off the beaten path. You need to book during the peak season and it is better to sit in the pub than in the dining room which does not have as much atmosphere. Tip: Try the Smores - to die for.

After our parents ate here recently we decided to give The Anderson a try. When booking we were told that we'd probably be in the bar and that a full restaurant menu would not be on offer, but having already seen the selection on that on the samples online we thought we'd find something suitable. On entering the bar it took a moment for our eyes to acclimatise to the rather low lighting - The Anderson's bar has character that's for sure - and whilst it may not be that appealing a setting for a meal, the quality of the food and service could not be faulted. The menu was substantially reduced compared to the sample restaurant menu and we both went for the fried chicken and waffle combination as it was the only one that took our fancy. The crispy batter around the beautifully moist chicken was amazing, and only bettered when drizzled liberally with maple syrup. The thin and crispy sweet potato chips were great, as was the sauce. We followed with the chocolate brownie - which was a lot lighter than it looked and very tasty - and the amalfi meringue with lemon curd and sorbet - which was equally good. The service was friendly and we'd certainly go back to try out the more extensive options on the restaurant menu.

The Anderson is one of our favourite places for several reasons. We stay in Cromarty with family every two years, and at least one visit is a must. High on our list of requirements is a welcome for children. The Anderson cannot be faulted for its attitude to families. This year, there were three couples with four young children, two in high chairs. Wi-fi kept one young man happy (we were there for a long time!) and a box of small toys intrigued the toddlers. The food is good, the staff very friendly and helpful and the wine/whisky list awesome. We were not disappointed. Be prepared to spend time here, but relax and appreciate the individuality of the establishment. Thank you, Jim, we hope to see you again before too long.

There aren't a huge number of places to eat around Fortrose/Rosemarkie area in the evening, and we'd already been turned away from one (which had been recommended to us) because they were fully booked. Popped along to the Anderson, which we'd noticed a couple of days before and checked its reviews. From the main street it's not very enticing, and inside it's clear that the current management team have retained a lot of its traditional character, rather than "tarting it up" to make it trendy. Having said that, the bar is a bit gloomy and could perhaps do with a bit of brightening up. And while we believe they attract quite a few customers because of their extensive beer and whisky listings, one does have to wonder how much it must cost to keep that kind of stock on hand, and whether it might be better to hone it down a bit. However, that wasn't our primary concern. Finding meals for a GF Vegetarian can be a bit of a challenge, especially with no prior warning, and the reason that the Anderson gets 4 stars from us is their willingness to double check ingredients and adapt to ensure that a meal could be provided. The young man on duty could not have been more helpful, and was kept on the hop all the time we were there, but was consistently pleasant and considerate of his customers. The starter (mushrooms) was tasty, and a little different from the norm. Ok, there wasn't an alternative to the tattie scone on which it was served, but that wasn't a major issue.Mains were burgers - one of which needed deconstruction to be eaten. It included haggis, bacon and a well prepared real beefburger cooked exactly as requested. Only criticism was the very chunky piece of iceberg lettuce. The other - spinach and falafel - was also tasty, and safe for a GF Veggie, though again no alternative to the bun was available, and there wasn't anything else on the plate to bulk it up. Having said that, we did ask for a little side of coleslaw which wasn't charged, so can't complain. Skinny fries were crisp and tasty.Desserts had the sweet freak hooked and their choice of peanut butter pie went down well with them. The other chose the Amalfi Meringue, where the sweetness of the meringue was offset by a lovely slick of zingy lemon curd (both looked and tasted home-made), a scoop of lemon sorbet and finished by a touch of creamy ice cream. Both hit the spot.Prices were perfectly acceptable, as was the food and service.

If any of you ever watch Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares USA, you'll get the title of this review, and know what to expect if you visit. On the positive side, the beer choice is great and the real ale on supply was fine. Also, you can take a dog into the public bar area for a drink and a meal. Now for the negatives - This place must have been good at one time ( and I was told by locals that a few years ago it certainly was ) but the whole place is in dire need of a make over and building refurb. The public bar area, where we ate, is like a dark cave, thanks in no small part to the windows being covered up, though not sufficiently to stop illuminating the cobwebs on the ceiling etc. The food , in my opinion, was some of the worst I have seen in my trips round the UK. A steak pie for £16 is at least £4 more than most decent pubs so I was expecting something great. It was, I am sure, not even made on the premises, was undercooked with gooey pastry underneath ( possibly the silver foil container prevented cooking ?) and was rather bland to boot. It was served with a huge portion of skinny fries and nothing else. Mouthwatering it was not ! The other food we had was a burger ( well done as I am always scared when I see a menu with more choices than Smiths in a phone book ) which was cooked even beyond well done ( the adorning slice of bacon on top was black, crisp and almost unrecognisable ) and a pizza which is supposedly cooked in their wood fired oven ( if it was cooked in this, there must have been 2 twigs for firewood as it was a molten pile of soft cheese on a base and not at all appealing ).Finally, the staff who all seemed to be from USA, were posted missing from the bar on most occasions and , I and the other punters, were left standing around waiting every time we wanted a drink. This place could be a really nice pub but boy, it needs sorting out and soon !

If it's the start of our Easter holidays, it must be Andersons again. Why do we keep going back? It could be the welcome from Jim and his staff. It could be the wide range of drinks on offer. Or, it could be Anne's food, yet again superb. We visited for 2 consecutive nights at Easter, and again, were not disappointed. I had the special Mediterranean Bread and butter pudding, and then the Lamb shank on the first night, both of which were excellent. The second night I opted for the homemade chicken and chorizo sausage, with sweet potato fritters, and then the Black Isle burger. You wouldn't have thought the Black Isle burger could have been improved, but it has been,by the addition of some salad ingredients and a dill pickle. My husband also ate well, having Dover Sole with a blood orange sauce. You wouldn't automatically think that would go well, but apparently it did, as I didn't get offered so much as a taste.

what to say about this place, except this was one of the few magic places discovered during our road trip. The atmosphere is trully local, yet welcoming and warmful to outsiders and tourists like us. The staff was extremely friendly and nice to held up discover local beers and dishes. Quality of food was great for a very decent price. And we finished the evening in the adjacent pub to listen live music. One of the best moments of our trip.

We'd heard very good things about the restaurant at the Anderson, and we weren't disappointed. We are here twice during our week in Fortrose, and enjoyed several dishes, ranging from a lovely salad through to their rib eye steak. The steak was the star, excellent meat, great flavour, cooked just as we like. Best steak I've had for years!I agree that the service can be haphazard, but I think it's mostly a case of being too busy, and having quite inexperienced staff, for the most part.Make sure to try a whisky in the whisky bar afterwards!

We had a lovely meal for four here last night the food was obviously home cooked to order and had none of the horrible heated up rubbish so many places serve nowadays. The staff were very pleasant and helpful without being intrusive. The bar restaurant filled up as the night went on and judging by the chatter and friendly vibe everyone else was enjoying themselves as much as we did. Don't miss trying it if you are in the area!

Being second home owners, we visit regularly however we had not been to The Anderson for a couple of years. When thinking of where to go for supper, we had no hesitation in booking The Anderson as previous visits have been superb.Unfortunately, we were very disappointed this time. Nicely greeted on arriving and shown to our table and given menus. All going well, then we were told that my husband had to go next door to the bar to choose his beer and the waiter would be back to take our drink order. We were then ignored for the best part of 20 minutes, no drinks and no specials board. We saw two more tables come in, given menus and drinks and the specials board so we're beginning to think about leaving. Finally our waiter came back and we ordered. Took another 10 mins to get our drinks though!Starters...Prawn creole from the specials board...yum...however, I guess my prawns were obviously pre-frozen as they were slightly chewy and tiny! I was so looking forward to plump juicy prawns in a creole dressing with lots of avocado, as the price tag of £8 suggested it should be. When it arrived, it was a sad looking plate, tiny prawns swimming in a brownish red slightly watery sauce, a few slices of avocado and leaf salad, could have done with some bread to mop up the sauce. Not a good start I'm afraid.Mains...I went with the steak, cooked well and very tasty, but it only came with chips, two large onion rings and a side salad, missed the mushrooms, tomato and coleslaw which would have made the plate much more appealing. Price £21.00. Hubby had the venison and black pudding in cherry sauce, which was good but only served with potatoes...no veg! Puddings....well they were divine and worth the long wait - after having to nod to the young guy at the front desk.We weren't the only ones encountering this hap hazard waitering, the poor guy behind us, asked three times for a glass of red wine, then the manager came with a bottle of white...not sure if he actually got it in the end.In summary, the food was fine but badly let down by the staff, apart from the young girl, her tables were well looked after..we were very envious! We will go back as we think the staff are just students home for the summer, so out of season may deliver different service. We would recommend the restaurant, food good and prices very reasonable, but be prepared for slow service.

We visited The Anderson during our recent Highlands holiday and had a lovely evening. This is the third year in a row we have visited and, as in the previous two years, we weren't disappointed. Having our Border Collie on holiday with us meant we were a little restricted as to where we could eat but The Anderson is great with a dog friendly 'bar' meaning we could eat and drink without worrying about leaving the dog back at the cottage. There were in fact another two or three dogs with their owners in the bar and the staff and owner were very welcoming and made a fuss of them all. I was with my wife, two grown up daughters and my wife's cousin and her husband. We all ordered burgers which were delicious. There is an unbelievable selection of bottled beer and a good selection of beers on pump. I had three pints of cloudy cider which were very refreshing. Being a single malt whisky lover I was well pleased with the selection with a catalogue provided that contained a fantastic selection to choose from. The Anderson has a lovely looking restaurant which we will hopefully experience one of these years if we can find a baby sitter for the dog I look forward to returning next summer.

We had a group of thirteen on a Sunday evening for dinner. We called ahead and they said they could accommodate us in the dining room but warned the service would be a little slow due. The service was extremely slow, but since we knew to expect it, it made it more tolerable. Angus was our waiter and it seemed like he had both the dining room and the bar all to himself to take care of, but he did a great job. All of the food we had was very tasty. We understand this pub is owned by an American which explained a couple of the menu items like chicken and waffles and the barnyard barbecue. Excepting the slow service, this was a great dinner for our group.

We called in once a few weeks ago whilst we was on holiday. I have never been made to feel so welcome in a pub before. By the time we left, we felt that we had always been in there and was treated as a friend not just a customer! Needless to say we have been in a good few times since, especially as our dog was allowed in. By the time we go home I hope to go at least once more to say thank you for making us welcome. Our dog, Tilly loves going in as she now knows where the treats container is and the 'dog water bowl'. I almost feel as I have known the staff and owner all my life as we are treated like friends!
