The Ancient Gatehouse Hotel in Mendip

Arrived at the agreed check in time of 2pm and the hotel was locked up and in darkness. We called the number on the door and the person said he would get the member of staff to come down and let us in. About two minutes later the member of staff came down and let us in, no apology or anything. The room wasn't made up and we had to leave our bags and make ourselves scarce until they had finished. Very poor service.

My wife and I stayed at the Ancient Gatehouse last week first staying in room 7 then room 9 both rooms were so comfortable and gave a real sense of history like stepping back in time 500 years but with all the mod cons. The breakfast choice offered a full english breakfast cooked with quality ingredients which was absolutely delicious and the restaurant RUGANTINO was outstanding serving primarily Italian cuisine but there were other choices available The Chefs are excellent. And lastly what a cracking team, the staff Andy, Nicky and Antonio and the others were absolute professionals making you their number one priority and all were so friendly.

Superb food here today. Excellent staff and highly recommended. Cheers!

What a fantastic stay! We ended our honeymoon here and the service we received was so friendly and warm. The room was just WOW. The coolest room we've ever stayed in, and I've stayed in a lot of places! We stayed on the gatehouse room, with 4 poster, bath and a view across cathedral square. We'll be back for sure. Thank you!

Room was comfortable and clean hut needing a refurbishment. Shower was excellent. No restaurant facility in evening but we were aware of this. Excellent location. It would be amazing on a summer evening in the garden.
