In the area for a weekend trip and came here for a Sunday Lunch. The staff were fantastic, affable and very attentive. We had a young man and woman serving us and both were so polite and lovely. I had the burger, it was tasty with good quaility meat, however it was marginally undercooked as was the bacon. Not in an unsafe way, more that it appeared to be cooked at a very low heat for a long time as opposed to grilled. The rest of our party had the carvery. All very much enjoyed it and finished their plates. The atmosphere of the pub is nostalgic, if you like country pubs on the edge of a town. Child friendly atmosphere made our lunch all the better.

Went for Sunday lunch , the meat is cut for you and help yourself to the rest BUT when going to the roast pots there was only two left we asked for more but none came out , then when we sat down we were infested with blue bottles around our table , it was a race to eat the food before the bluebottle flys got on it , all threw our meal we were batting off flys , this was not a nice experience, when we mentioned it to waitress she said it was because they had to open a window , well I’m sorry there are always ways to help stop them coming in and it makes you think OMG what is the kitchen like , and we hate being called “my darling “ which was said all the time by the waitress, she was very nice but should not talk to people like this it’s not professional, so all in all not a very good visit .

Delicious food 10/10, brilliant curry Tuesday offer, dog friendly pub inside and out, excellent service I think by Kat who apologised in advance if the service would be slower than normal but it was absolutely fine, stayed for the quiz and would return again! Perfect for people staying in any of the caravan sites locally and more so if you have a dog and wanting to find somewhere that accepts dogs inside! Thank you so much - we would happily return if we came back to the area again.

First time at The Anchor and we were really hoping to add this to our list of regular local eateries, but left disappointed. Sure, it was Saturday night but it took more than an hour and 20 minutes for our food to arrive, although this wasn’t too much of a problem as we were busy chatting. The dining hall lacks atmosphere - although the ceiling lighting is reminiscent of Hogwarts. The menu is large with plenty of variety, but this can often be a warning sign. My Chicken Katsu Curry had its naan bread replaced unannounced with a single poppadum, and the portion was decidedly small for a £15 main course. The £16 chicken and chorizo skewers also failed to live up to billing, while the burger was average. The moules did get a thumbs up, as did the ham, egg and chips. It’s also worth noting that the staff were very pleasant. Sadly though, we didn’t feel we got good value, although it seems to serve the local campsites well.

So good we ate here twice in a row! First night I had a very good chicken Caesar salad which was very good, just the right amount of caesar dressing, crunchy romaine lettuce and grilled chicken. Unfortunately our sausage and mash was a slight letdown due to the mash but the staff kindly rectify it. When we left we booked for the following night which was Wednesday night carvery @ 2 for £20. At what a delight that was, excellent choice of very good meats and outstanding home cooked roast potatoes and vegetables all of which quality produce. The lady that took care of us on both nights was Carla and what an asset to the business she will be. This was only her second week but it shows that she really cares about her customers satisfaction and making sure that they leave happy, full and content. Thank to Carla, chef Harvey and all the staff at the Anchor ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Mid week carvery after lucking out in a Sunday Roast . Met by a busy member of staff with a cheery disposition & seated .. said she would come & take our drinks order .. watched her flying around for sometime .. decided to go to the bar & get our own drinks .. she *Debra, apologised & I acknowledged she was on her own & no problem .. we waited a further 20 minutes before our food order was taken - we all wanted the carvery - given a ticket & asked to wait until called .. we sat & waited .. it wasn’t exceptionally busy there were empty tables & the carvery counter stood empty most of the time ..so frustrating we nearly walked out & were there 1.30 hours before we got our food!! which was all good. Debra was apologising to everyone & her cheery nature helped .. without her it would be a disaster! Obviously a lack of staff was a real issue here

I suggested The Anchor to my parents whilst visiting them this weekend. My dad was a little reluctant as having eaten here some years back, it had been a disaster and he didn't want a repeat! However he agreed,so I went in Sat and booked. Painless procedure! Explained Mum is GF. On arrival Sunday we're warmly greeted and shown to our table, the restaurant is aesthetically pleasing and seating comfortable. Our drink order was taken and arrived very promptly. We went up to the carvery, you're called when to go up so none of this long winding snake of people round the restaurant! The Chef was friendly and chattted, not though to the detriment of service. He was informative, and was clearly knowledgeable about the contents on the counter, only the Yorkshires were unsuitable for Mum. The meat looked lovely, 4 good choices. Nice selection of veg including a mushroom and leek dish, unusual but pleasant. Lewis our server a very pleasant and polite young man, checked everything was ok and if we needed anything else and then left us alone, no hovering etc. Mum and Dad had desserts, both enjoyed them. My only criticism is that the veg was not hot, it was arriving regularly from the kitchen fresh and clearly steaming, so not sure why it's only luke warm once it's on your plate. I also think £6.95 for 3 blobs of ice cream is a little expensive. However that said it was a very enjoyable meal, in very pleasant surroundings and we will be returning. My Dad used the toilets and wanted it mentioned that they, like the rest of the pub are spotless.

Visited the Anchor with 7 friends and our large table was well catered for. We were seated in the main restaurant and the vaulted ceiling and hanging bulbs really makes a lasting impression. The staff highlighted some new dishes on the menu which some of our party tried - the mini sausages were a hit as were the nachos (and that was just for starters!) I had the chicken and chorizo skewers and they were delicious - all of the food was fresh and hot and given how busy the pub was it arrived quickly. We were well looked after by the staff, and with gin drinkers and some on alcohol free drinks we were very well catered for in that area with a really good selection. In all we had a great night and won't hesitate to be back - definitely need to try the Sunday carvery!

We were welcomed as soon as we came through the door and immediately we felt like we were at home. Taken to a table in the nicely decorated bar area with that real pub feel. There was even a man and his dog propped up at the bar - which we loved. We went on and ordered a Monster Burger and Hunters chicken which was exactly what we expected delicious and huge! Our wait was reasonable considering there were a few tables. Our server (sorry didn't get their name) was attentive and genuinely interested about our day which was refreshing to the chain restaurants now days. Where do I start. Came here for a lunch for the first time ever, lovely little place nicely decorated, had a log fire burning etc. Was greeted by a guy so we asked if we could get a table for two for lunch. We picked our own menus up as we didn’t get offered any. Another couple came in just after us and sat opposite us and we had a good chat. Baring in mind there was only our table and this other couple so they were not busy at all. They ordered their drinks and food. When the server came over to us we asked if there was another menu as the couple opposite had a different one. And he said no that is the menu untill the couple gave us the lunch one. Anyway.. ordered drinks, then ordered two things from the lunch menu. It took a good 10 minutes for our drinks to come And around 25 minutes for our food to come which we had ham egg and chips & a gammon and chutney baguette. The food was placed on our table and we were asked about sauces, again took a good 10 mins for sauces to come out and then we had to ask for cutlery whilst the food was getting cold. My partner literally cut into her gammon and egg and found a thick short black hair under her gammon and with that I took it straight to the bar and complained and the answer I got back was ‘I’m sorry I don’t no how that’s happened all our chefs wear hats’ … I get that but I’m blonde and my partner has light brown hair so where do you think it came from. We booked this place for a Christmas Family Meal and we cannot fault the service we received from Adam. They took the time and effort to decorate the table which was a nice extra touch! There was 12 of us in total and the amount of food that was brought out could feed an army and we were not short for choice at all! Nobody complained at all about their choices. From personal experiences if you have a roast at many pubs these days you have to ask for extra gravy and it’s not always available but we had little gravy boats brought out which was great! This place could be considered a rare find and needs to support of local customers it definitely has foundations to be fantastic!

My son, a few friends and I thought we would try The Anchor pub in Sidlesham a few weeks ago. We went for their roast, and I can honestly say we were not disappointed. We had 3 choices of meats and unlimited vegetable. When there we were told they do a roast on a Wednesday from 6pm (same again, 3 meat choices etc...) and we have been every week since. It really is value for money and worth a visit mid-week. My son is a fussy eater and said, “it is the best roast he has ever had in a pub/restaurant”. The pub has real charm, friendly, local approach and the roast is delicious. It is well worth a visit and would highly recommend!!

Went for a Sunday carvery, the place was fairly empty, with just one other table. Ordered the carvery and drinks at 6:00pm and we were told that we couldn’t just go up to the carvery to get the food, even though it was already out? we had to wait for the chefs to invite us up to be served?? By 6:20 we had neither the drinks or the food. No one else was being served at the carvery and the chefs were all just sat down in the kitchen. I asked the waiter and he said that the chefs were waiting for Yorkshire puddings to be brought out? I said that I didn’t want any yorkshires, but he told me I still couldn’t go up until the chefs said it was ok. I waited a little longer, no chef and no drink, so I called the Walnut Tree who booked us in straight away, we then got up and left. It was about 6:30. By 7:00pm we had been seated, served 2 courses and were on coffees at the Walnut Tree. What a completely different experience! See my review and photos of the place If you own this place, the chefs want sacking and you’re waiting staff need to be retrained

Went for a Sunday pint but they’d run out of bitter! Waited for a fair while at the bar to order, only to discover no bitter available. At least the cider was nicely chilled and the crisps were not stale. This time the fire was lit and plenty of customers eating lunch. Younger staff need to improve customer service - perhaps need more supervision or training?

Great venue, good atmosphere and the people serving were marvellous. Big problem , no staff. Understaffed and no manager typically staff that were there could not have been bettered for aptitude, friendliness and skill , food was late, although very good, haphazard at best.

My friends and I have used this pub/restaurant several times over the last few years, and as it’s usually on Sunday, we opt for the carvery. We booked a table for 3.45 on 12th November 2023. We arrived on time and were shown to our table which was in the main hall, and seemed rather busy inside. The manager told us that someone would be with us shortly to take our order, no mention of (may I get you some drinks) which is common courtesy in most places. After waiting at least 15 mins, my friend’s husband decided to go and order our drinks from the bar area as it seemed we’d been forgotten about. Just before he returned, which took him (10 mins to get the drinks) I called one of the staff over to say we were still waiting for someone to take our food order. He told us he’d be with us in two minutes. We opted for 3 smaller carvery’s for OAP’s (although mine was the nut roast, as I’m vegetarian. My friends son ordered the smoked paprika chicken & chorizo skewers with pitta bread etc. We were then told we’d have to wait to be called up for the carvery. Another 20 minutes went by and we were finally called. My vegetarian option was ready on the glass above the carvery, so I continued to add the veg to my plate. I could see my friend talking to man carving the meat, who explained to her that there was no turkey left and she would have to wait another 45 as the other one was still cooking. She has dietary issues, and turkey was the only meat she could eat. Her husband was behind me with a “Tea Plate” with a few slices of meat on, so I said to him, are they giving another plate for the vegetables. He said “no, apparently this is it, a child’s plate!” The size of the plate you’d fit a bread roll on! There is no way he could get even one potato and veg on it. How can they justify a charge of £10.95 for a plate so small. They both decided to go without as this should have been explained when order was taken. I’ve ordered children’s carvery’s for my grandchildren in other other pubs, and the plates are only slightly smaller than the adults plate, and usually half the price. This child’s plate was fit for a 2 year old, absolute joke! This should all have been explained when taking our order. Customer service was extremely poor, and atmosphere non existent. Management take note!

I feel very sorry to have to be honest but unfortunately we didn't have the best experience at the Anchor today. First of all the bad points - the service today was not good at all. Everyone is very friendly, but it was so slow and lots of errors were made. We ordered our drinks, which my mum ordered an Aspall. The drinks took half an hour to arrive and when they did they bought to us an Old Mout. We questioned this as it wasn't what we ordered and we were told they didn't have Aspall. My husbands coke also didn't arrive so they had to go back for that. We ordered starters and our mains and then had to wait for another half an hour or so for them to arrive. We asked where they were and they were bought out a few minutes after. We were then waiting another 15 minutes or so for the plates to be cleared, which was actually done by the carvery chef because he noticed we'd been waiting so long. We didn't have to wait too long for mains again because the chef on the carvery took control of our table at that point. When our plates were cleared away we were asked if we wanted to see the dessert menu, which didn't arrive, so we had to ask again. Desserts were again about another half an hour and were also bought out by another one of the chefs who apologised for the service we had received and explained they were busier than they had expected and that there were a lot of new people working and in training. We asked for our bill when our plates were cleared and again it didn't come, so we had to ask a second time. There were quite a few other tables that were waiting quite a while for their drinks/orders/orders were wrong. The good - the pub is beautiful, really nicely decorated and warm and welcoming. Despite the errors the hospitality team were all very friendly. A special shout out to the chef on the carvery who was really helpful and as mentioned above, noticed we'd been waiting for a long time. He was also very personable and was talking to everyone he was serving. I also appreciated the explanation and apology from the chef who bought us our puddings. The food was superb, couldn't complain about anything we ate. All in all, I think it's a shame that we had really slow service as it overshadowed the great food and made it a poor experience. There were a lot of staff walking around but nothing really seemed to get done and when it was it wasn't done correctly. I do think that this place could be so good, if the service is improved. I do understand the difficulties with having new team members etc however things just didn't flow and we were in the pub for 3 and a half hours due to how long we had to wait for everything. I would come back, because there are lots of good points but for the sake of the pub and for those who were working really hard, the service definitely needs improving.

This was our third visit. All staff made you feel welcome, they were helpful and attentive. We shared the squid as a starter followed by sausages & mash and an Anchor burger. Food was excellent quality and served promptly. We will be back.

I had a poor experience with a liver meal. Little liver and no Veg. I got a dried Yorkshire pudding in place of veg which was very poor indeed. Also it cost as much as the more substantial meals. I paid 11.95 as is the main price for the lunch. Can't understand why I had to pay that much for less food and particularly a dry Yorkshire pudfing. Its not really suitable for a liver dish anyway. I protested but they didn't seem to realise

The reason I am not marking this as a 1* review is simply for the service received by the girl working Saturday 14th September about 16:00. She was on her own but was really friendly. The store however, had a horrible musty smell and there were so many flies behind the desk (see photo for 2 on the menu). From the outside the store needs a repaint, it looks so old and totally un inviting. Sat outside, tables were full of cups and cans so had to clear it ourselves. Feel sorry for the staff.

Although they’ve faced a few days of closure it doesn’t take away from the brilliance of the food they serve, food was done beautifully and the burgers cooked very well. Generous portion sizes and very very thick and tasty milkshakes I will definitely be returning. Also to note the tables and kitchen are kept quite clean and there was wasn’t much mess on the floor round the crowded tables which is a good sign the place is being looked after well.

Unacceptable delay in coffee, I suspect they had forgotten! Have been regulars, but this experience is probably going to make us try one of the many other options in town.
