We had lunch in the garden. Food was delicious and the view was gorgeous. The pun looked lovely inside too. Only downside was the price of a glass of rosè. We were told we were going for the mid range glass but it turned out as a very expensive one which we didn't pick up on when we paid the bill. We should have checked, but felt a bit ripped off with the misinformation on wine costs. Otherwise great!

We visited for Sunday lunch for my Mother’s birthday and everything was excellent. We were given a lovely table in the outdoor terrace which was beautifully presented, very clean and tidy with incredible views. There was also plenty of space for our big dog and they kindly brought him a big bowl of water, perfect on such a warm day. Service from the tall gentleman with dark hair (I am so sorry, my husband did ask your name but I have forgotten what he told me!) was great, attentive without being pushy and more than happy to bring us sauces to go with the roast and extra gravy! Food was delicious and good size portions while still leaving space for the wonderful chocolate delice pudding! Would highly recommend.

We had dinner from 6.30 pm in one area of the restaurant, giving us seating for up to 30 people for family and friends to eat or have drinks. The food was delicious, it covered all tastes, was presented well, and came out hot. As we could not do a preorder, the restaurant reduced the menu to help with service, but still made it a good-sized menu to meet all requirements. I would recommend the restaurant for lunch or dinner, the food and service are fantastic, and a restaurant that understands customer service

I’ve been to the Welldiggers a couple of times for lunch but this was my first visit for dinner. As always, the staff were really welcoming, friendly and smiley. The atmosphere is great and it looked lovely with the lighting level and the candles. The food arrived quickly and tasted amazing. I had the chicken supreme which I would recommend. We came across 3 members of staff who took the orders, brought the food or drink or came over when we waved and all were really nice. Special mention to Harry who was just lovely and incredibly polite. My only criticism would be that it wasn’t very busy so would have been better if someone had come over to check if we needed more drinks rather than us having to ask. However, all in all, it was great and I will happily go back!

It is always a pleasure to go back to the Welldiggers and we had a particularly good post Petworth dog walk lunch on a beautifully sunny but cold February Tuesday. The welcome is always warm, even for two exuberant spaniels, and the ladies looking after us could not have been kinder or more professional. Our Bubble & Squeak Benedicts were delicious - such a great idea! Disappointed I have to say. In the past its been nice but fell well short yesterday. The menu available was not that on the internet, reduced menu we were told was due to an oven problem by one waiters then the next waiter said there was a new chef and he has reduced the selection. One of my guests was a vegetarian so the Vegetable Wellington was good, however this was not available so asked what else and was told ravioli, my guest did not want that so was offered a roast with no meat !!! 30 mins wait for deserts after asking twice. All in all left very disappointed indeed.

After a 4 mile walk we returned to the car park to change footwear before entering the Pub. A warm & welcoming greeting from the manager made us feel right at home. Seated next to warm fire we ordered lunch from a more varied menu than traditional pub fayre. I opted for the Hash brown Benedict. Delicious. My friends settled to the burgers, which were generous in size and tasty as well. Puddings again somewhat different, I opted for the chocolate rice pudding, which in my view didn't really work. The After eight mint ice-cream was a hit with the others. Service here is on the ball, and the Kitchen has a good Chef, so if you are visiting Petworth area this pub is well worth a visit. PS Rarely do you find hot water coming out of the taps in pubs, but you do here. The views even on a cloudy day are spectacular.

I usually don't leave negative reviews unless I feel like I've been robbed somehow. The experience I'm about to share happened a few weeks ago. I hesitated as to whether I should raise this but as seeing nothing was done on the day to compensate poor service and mediocre food, and as I can see none of the feedbacks were taken into account as other people have left reviews since mentioning similar problems, I'll have to leave this here. I'll start with the positives; Great choice of alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks, beautiful pub and views. Now for the negatives; Ordered a main, which contained only 4 ravioli, was bland and cost me £18. I have no problem at all paying this amount even for a small plate if it is executed to perfection but this wasn't the case. Very bland and watery sauce (as mentioned in another review). My friends all ordered different roasts (meat/veggie etc); all arrived cold (even the gravy). A couple of the trimmings were missing, which wasn't mentioned when ordered. Apparently there was a problem with the oven that day, this should have been mentioned when ordering to manage expectations and offer different trimmings to compensate. My friend's £8.50 disconstructed cheesecake was OK but tiny and again not perfectly executed to explain the price for literally 2 mouthfuls. All of this was mentioned to staff/management on the spot/on the day and nothing was done to compensate (no complementary drinks or discount/reduction of any kind). Now cherry on top; When paying the bill, it states clearly on it that the service charge is at our discretion. After the experience we had, I was happy to pay a part of the tip (I'm not a monster) but not the full amount. The waitress takes all the payments and then tells us there is still money missing from the bill. We asked if it was from the bill or from the service charge and she can't give us a straight answer. I try to reason with her and explain that if the service charge is at our discretion and that the bill itself is covered then it should be ok. She ignores my point and forces us all to pay the full amount, service charge included. My husband and I paid a whooping £140 for us both and my daughter for mediocre food and bad service. We won't come back. Mistakes happen, but the way it's all been dealt with is appalling. Edit: also forgot to mention we had to wait quite a long time to be served and another table that came and ordered after us were served first, but I'll put that down to it being a way smaller party than us

Had fish which was mostly batter and the desert roasted plumbs which apparently should have been warmish was infact stone cold so obviously straight out of he fridge. The staff were very attentive and gave us a £5 refund, but to be honest do I really want to chance it again as it's not the cheapest around for the portion I received. MD

The pub was lovely and our table had a lovely view. The staff were friendly but unfortunately it took a long time for us to get our drinks and over an hour for our food to arrive. They were down a chef but other people who arrived after us were served first so this was a disappointment. The staff did kindly give us some money off our bill as a result. The service and setting were fantastic. My reason for giving 4 stars and not 5 is the meal I ordered was not available but we weren’t told that until after I placed the order and it was put through to the kitchen, as it was a vegan meal my subsequent choices were limited and the meal I had was a little bland.

We booked for Sunday lunch here yesterday 19.01.25. We were very disappointed to find the 4 items on the menu were not available, all 4 of the items were plates that we would have ordered. The starter I had of hummus was very mediocre and I would not order again. The main dish of roast beef was very nice it could have all been a little hotter on arrival to us and we went without a pudding as there was nothing that was available on the menu that we wanted as the 2 dishes that were not available were the dishes that we would have ordered. So all in all a little disappointing to say the least

We visited the pub for dinner and the menus sounded really exciting. Unfortunately, at least during our visit, we were left a little disappointed. The ravioli was nice but the sauce was quite watery — a richer, thicker sauce would have made it much more interesting. The flavours were also slightly bland. The pork tomahawk was served with cabbage which felt like an odd pairing, and the general presentation and flavours were a little uninteresting for £28. The sticky toffee pudding sponge was very dry and fell apart when you cut into it. The sauce and ice cream served with the dessert, along with the decaf latte, were excellent though. To give them credit, on giving the above feedback to our waiter, he removed the coffee and dessert from our bill. This brought the overall price down to an acceptable level given the quality of the food. The waiter did mention that a new head chef had just started the previous week, and had yet to modify any of the dishes to put his ‘mark’ on them, so they were grateful for the feedback. As such, we would consider going back here maybe in a few months once they’ve had a chance to review the dishes. We were attracted to this pub because of the diverse and interesting vegetarian main options, which is always a sign of a creative chef — so hopefully they retain this approach moving forwards.

We stayed for our anniversary, the food and service was lovely. My only small complaint is the restaurant/bar was closing at 630-7pm due to being New Years Day and we had planned on having a few drinks in the evening before our stay in the room. Would of been nice had there been some sort of warning as there is nothing else around and given no other choice but to spend the evening in the room. Our room also had no teabags or milk and there was no number provided to contact anyone so had to find the pubs number and instead of being bought to us we had to go and collect it.

Drinks and meal on Saturday between Xmas and NY. Great atmosphere, lovely logfire, friendly efficient service and good choice of food - the portions are pretty generous so found too much having shared starter.

Really lovely atmosphere and great service from attentive kind staff. The room was very comfortable clean and welcome coffee & biscuits. The adjacent bridle way a good dog walk. The noise from the fan was the only low point.

Had Christmas lunch at the Welldiggers, Petworth. Quite simply fantastic. Just my wife and I, but were treated to a delicious meal in a lovely traditional country pub overlooking the downs. Staff were warm, attentive and food was absolutely delicious. No complaints at all. Will be booking for next year and will bring as many of the family I can. A wonderful experience.

Lovely pub with nicely furnish rooms, comfy bed and good water pressure. Petworth is close enough to walk to, or there’s a local bus if you don’t want to drive.

Avoided The Welldiggers Arms for a few years as became rundown & very mediocre but REALLY pleased we went last night to discover new owners with excellent approach to hospitality. Warm welcome, lovely atmosphere, friendly staff, delicious food & proper cloth napkins 👍. Fabulous thank you.

Although they’ve faced a few days of closure it doesn’t take away from the brilliance of the food they serve, food was done beautifully and the burgers cooked very well. Generous portion sizes and very very thick and tasty milkshakes I will definitely be returning. Also to note the tables and kitchen are kept quite clean and there was wasn’t much mess on the floor round the crowded tables which is a good sign the place is being looked after well.

Lovely roast dinner, great service and a lovely little pub with a really nice garden and at the top of town so away from the hustle and bustle, highly recommend the roast and the garden on a sunny day!

Lovely fresh healthy food in a light airy setting. Lots of choice so there's something for everyone. My sister in law is gluten free so it was great she had lots of options. It's dog friendly too!

Lovely little busy pub, good food (we went there on curry night) staff were friendly, and the tables were clean. Didn't take long to get served either. Reasonably priced, plenty of parking available. Overall 8/10
