Disappointed I have to say. In the past its been nice but fell well short yesterday. The menu available was not that on the internet, reduced menu we were told was due to an oven problem by one waiters then the next waiter said there was a new chef and he has reduced the selection. One of my guests was a vegetarian so the Vegetable Wellington was good, however this was not available so asked what else and was told ravioli, my guest did not want that so was offered a roast with no meat !!! 30 mins wait for deserts after asking twice. All in all left very disappointed indeed.

Fabulous location overlooking the south downs. The rooms are very nicely furnished and have large comfy beds. Great menu for dinner and breakfast all very tasty. To top it off James and his team provide excellent service, well done. The only small downside is the road is a little busy during the day but didn't disturb us at night.

A great place to stay. We were celebrating my wife's 10 years cancer free and the staff made it special. A small issue with the heating in the room, but the manager upgraded us and changed rooms. No drama but dealt with immediately. The food was excellent, the beer was good and the location was perfect. We would recommend The Welldiggers Arms as a great venue.

After a 4 mile walk we returned to the car park to change footwear before entering the Pub. A warm & welcoming greeting from the manager made us feel right at home. Seated next to warm fire we ordered lunch from a more varied menu than traditional pub fayre. I opted for the Hash brown Benedict. Delicious. My friends settled to the burgers, which were generous in size and tasty as well. Puddings again somewhat different, I opted for the chocolate rice pudding, which in my view didn't really work. The After eight mint ice-cream was a hit with the others. Service here is on the ball, and the Kitchen has a good Chef, so if you are visiting Petworth area this pub is well worth a visit. PS Rarely do you find hot water coming out of the taps in pubs, but you do here. The views even on a cloudy day are spectacular.

Don’t stay! Rooms poorly maintained and missing the basics. Pub is a rip off with poor food and breakfast was terrible! You pay a surcharge for an English breakfast if you have B&B rate. Generally a laughable experience! Out to take your money and offer zero service, very poor!

Lovely old pub only the second time we have been there unfortunately the roast was only average this time as the meat was either over done or the portions were on the small side. We will go back as on the day they were particularly busy so they might have been a bit rushed . I'm still hopeful The welldiggers will be a pub we frequent regularly

I usually don't leave negative reviews unless I feel like I've been robbed somehow. The experience I'm about to share happened a few weeks ago. I hesitated as to whether I should raise this but as seeing nothing was done on the day to compensate poor service and mediocre food, and as I can see none of the feedbacks were taken into account as other people have left reviews since mentioning similar problems, I'll have to leave this here. I'll start with the positives; Great choice of alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks, beautiful pub and views. Now for the negatives; Ordered a main, which contained only 4 ravioli, was bland and cost me £18. I have no problem at all paying this amount even for a small plate if it is executed to perfection but this wasn't the case. Very bland and watery sauce (as mentioned in another review). My friends all ordered different roasts (meat/veggie etc); all arrived cold (even the gravy). A couple of the trimmings were missing, which wasn't mentioned when ordered. Apparently there was a problem with the oven that day, this should have been mentioned when ordering to manage expectations and offer different trimmings to compensate. My friend's £8.50 disconstructed cheesecake was OK but tiny and again not perfectly executed to explain the price for literally 2 mouthfuls. All of this was mentioned to staff/management on the spot/on the day and nothing was done to compensate (no complementary drinks or discount/reduction of any kind). Now cherry on top; When paying the bill, it states clearly on it that the service charge is at our discretion. After the experience we had, I was happy to pay a part of the tip (I'm not a monster) but not the full amount. The waitress takes all the payments and then tells us there is still money missing from the bill. We asked if it was from the bill or from the service charge and she can't give us a straight answer. I try to reason with her and explain that if the service charge is at our discretion and that the bill itself is covered then it should be ok. She ignores my point and forces us all to pay the full amount, service charge included. My husband and I paid a whooping £140 for us both and my daughter for mediocre food and bad service. We won't come back. Mistakes happen, but the way it's all been dealt with is appalling. Edit: also forgot to mention we had to wait quite a long time to be served and another table that came and ordered after us were served first, but I'll put that down to it being a way smaller party than us

1st time at the welldiggers arms on Saturday 25th Jan and I'm sorry to say that it wasn't our best experience 😕 food took over a hour from ordering to come and the food could have been a little better. Had fish which was mostly batter and the desert roasted plumbs which apparently should have been warmish was infact stone cold so obviously straight out of he fridge. The staff were very attentive and gave us a £5 refund, but to be honest do I really want to chance it again as it's not the cheapest around for the portion I received. MD

The pub was lovely and our table had a lovely view. The staff were friendly but unfortunately it took a long time for us to get our drinks and over an hour for our food to arrive. They were down a chef but other people who arrived after us were served first so this was a disappointment. The staff did kindly give us some money off our bill as a result. I think we were just unlucky. The food was very average for the price but perhaps one is paying more for the setting which was lovely.

The service and setting were fantastic. My reason for giving 4 stars and not 5 is the meal I ordered was not available but we weren’t told that until after I placed the order and it was put through to the kitchen, as it was a vegan meal my subsequent choices were limited and the meal I had was a little bland.

I had a fabulous lunch here with a friend. The views are incredible (even on a misty day), the food was excellent (I had the fish stew with some truffle and parmesan chips), the service was first class - everyone we interacted with was professional and friendly. I was impressed that there was an allergen menu (my friend has a nut and dairy allergy) and she loved her meal too. The dining area was clean and spacious, and I would come back in a heartbeat for lunch, dinner or a special occasion. So happy to have found this lovely establishment.

It's the third time I've been here, I don't live locally so have bought my mum who lives nearby for lunch a few times and friends. It's a lovely setting and the food is always good. All 3 of us ordered the burger this time and the chef didn't add the bacon/relish that was on the menu, they did apologise and offered to add the bacon but we declined as the meal was nice enough as it was. Very attentive staff and friendly service. Bonus was being able to bring my dog along too.

We booked for Sunday lunch here yesterday 19.01.25. We were very disappointed to find the 4 items on the menu were not available, all 4 of the items were plates that we would have ordered. The starter I had of hummus was very mediocre and I would not order again. The main dish of roast beef was very nice it could have all been a little hotter on arrival to us and we went without a pudding as there was nothing that was available on the menu that we wanted as the 2 dishes that were not available were the dishes that we would have ordered. So all in all a little disappointing to say the least

We visited the pub for dinner and the menus sounded really exciting. Unfortunately, at least during our visit, we were left a little disappointed. The ravioli was nice but the sauce was quite watery — a richer, thicker sauce would have made it much more interesting. The flavours were also slightly bland. The pork tomahawk was served with cabbage which felt like an odd pairing, and the general presentation and flavours were a little uninteresting for £28. The sticky toffee pudding sponge was very dry and fell apart when you cut into it. The sauce and ice cream served with the dessert, along with the decaf latte, were excellent though. To give them credit, on giving the above feedback to our waiter, he removed the coffee and dessert from our bill. This brought the overall price down to an acceptable level given the quality of the food. The waiter did mention that a new head chef had just started the previous week, and had yet to modify any of the dishes to put his ‘mark’ on them, so they were grateful for the feedback. As such, we would consider going back here maybe in a few months once they’ve had a chance to review the dishes. We were attracted to this pub because of the diverse and interesting vegetarian main options, which is always a sign of a creative chef — so hopefully they retain this approach moving forwards.

We stayed for our anniversary, the food and service was lovely. My only small complaint is the restaurant/bar was closing at 630-7pm due to being New Years Day and we had planned on having a few drinks in the evening before our stay in the room. Would of been nice had there been some sort of warning as there is nothing else around and given no other choice but to spend the evening in the room. Our room also had no teabags or milk and there was no number provided to contact anyone so had to find the pubs number and instead of being bought to us we had to go and collect it.

My sister in law and I had the pumpkin ravioli which was divine (vegan food can be a hit and miss! Not this time, it was delicious to a point that I could have licked the plate :) ) The staff ... Location great, service amazing, had a really lovely guy servicing us who was friendly, helpful, assertive, he gets 10/10. but food was absolutely disappointing in every way.. had the ravioli, which was just bizarre flavours all put together and serviced barely even luke warm, for dessert I had the cheese cake which was another load of bizarre flavours that just didn't go together! You can tell they're trying to be fancy with their options but just totally missing the mark and nothing tasted nice! I went with 3 other people who all disliked their food too. Sadly because of this I wouldn't return.. if they completely change the menu and do the food better then it would be a perfect place to visit due to the location and setting!

It’s a shame that I’ve had to resort to this but I emailed the team with no response. We visited as a family of 3 (2 adults and 1 baby) on Saturday for an early dinner. The food was fine but we expected better for what the pub could be based on location and view. I wanted the pie but was told they hadn’t been made yet for the dinner service, even though we’d been given I feel so lucky that my daughter refused to eat there as that night after my partner had eaten the venison he suffered severe food poisoning all evening once we got back to our hotel. He was up all night incredibly sick. I’ve never seen him so poorly. I emailed Sunday at around 7am-ish to advise what had happened for them to urgently review the meat and state of kitchen but have been ignored. My partner has only really just recovered from the weekend and I dread to think how poorly my baby would’ve been if she’d eaten here.

Just been for a family of 7 celebration Sunday Lunch (pre-wedding get together). Been here a few times and has been great service and food. Today was sadly disappointing- despite what appeared to be plenty of staff, we had to seek out staff to order both drinks and food. Service was slow and 6 drinks came in dribs and drabs despite being ordered at the same time. Sunday roast was nowhere as good as previous visits, the Trio of meats was pretty shocking - beef over cooked and all 3 in tiny portions. jSeasonal veg was half a carrot and half a small parsnip with a spoonful of cabbage - seemed unduly mean. The side order of cauliflower cheese simply failed to materialise as did the 2 separate requests for more gravy. After 2 hours, we gave up waiting to order desserts and coffee. Such a shame, but not sure we will be back.

So I booked 4 rooms months on 16th July 2024 for GFOS in July 2025 and 3 months later they cancelled my booking via booking.com and just said sorry . So now I have to find x 4 rooms at additional cost. REALLY BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE AND YOU SHOULD NOT SIMPLY CANCEL A BOOKING AS YOU CAN CHARGE EXTRA. NEVER USE WELLDIGGERS ARMS unless your prepared to be let down at any time

A last minute booking for my husbands birthday. Greeted well at the entrance. Delicious starter of hummus Main a mushroom pasty. This was really tasty and the only thing was a tad too salty. This doesn't mean we didn't enjoy it, we did, but a little less salt added would be good Great service, food served promptly. We've made a promise to return during the daytime to enjoy the outside views Would recommend. Twinkly lights came on after our arrival, which added to the cosy feel of the place. We've already recommended to our friends and family

Great country venue to meet friends coming from different areas. Excellent selection of food and drinks; lovely staff and good atmosphere and plenty of off road parking

Lovely pub hotel. Delicious roast, the pork was amazing. Vegan Wellington was wonderful my daughter thought. Service excellent. All served in a beautiful setting. Looking forward to staying with you next year to be near our daughter's wedding venue.

We had a Saturday evening meal with friends at The Welldiggers. The window table gave us a chance to share the amazing view....full marks for that. Not full marks for the menu and food though. We all agreed that there was far too much choice, that "less is more" and that the quality of food on our plate was not worth the amount we paid for it. Overall we were disappointed having enjoyed the food on visits in the past.

First time at Welldiggers Arms and the atmosphere and food is immaculate. The staff were also very attentive, and had a great energy! The view is also very picturesque. Highly recommend a visit!

Beautiful view from the pub and the room. The patio area is a lovely addition with stunning views. The staff were all friendly and the pub itself is beautifully decorated with a warm welcoming atmosphere. The only negative thing to say is with it being on a busy road, the traffic noise is very noticeable, but that can’t be helped!

I had a very good overnight stay at the Welldiggers Arms. The bed was very comfortable. I had a room with a little terrace and a lovely view of the South Downs. I had dinner in the restaurant and the food was very good quality. The breakfast was very good too with a big choice.

Going to a wedding we drove past, stopped and had a great meal. The staff are extremely friendly and efficient. If I was really going to gripe then I would say, "watch out" the Ribeye is actually pork - yes, still great but not beef. Oh aye, cider is on draught (gluten free) as is all cider. Catch up soon 🙈

Nice staff, well cooked food but the portion sizes are very disappointing. A Sunday roast consisted of just 1 slice of beef, 1 small piece of carrot, 1 small piece of parsnip, 2 half’s of a potato, a tiny bit of broccoli and a Yorkshire. Bit mean considering it was £23 per head. Came away feeling hungry.

Hoorah. Apricot danish has returned. Cappuccino remains my favourite.
