Stopped here after a walk around the reservoir for a quick cream tea. We sat outside as we have a dog but it was dog friendly indoors too. Staff were extremely friendly. Cream tea was lovely and all very fresh with beautiful china tea pots. We would definitely recommend. It's also a great place for people watching in the square.

Friendly staff. The shop was very busy with upstairs as well as outside tables and we therefore had to wait some time. However, a pleasant and cosy place to enjoy. My husband had a chocolate and biscoffi cake which was sublime. Unfortunately I had the GF option, a tired Victoria sponge that was past its date. I didn't complain, they had enough to cope with. The dried-out flowerless stems on the table standing in green water, could have been removed or replaced.

This beautiful, quaint, teashop nestled in Axbridge square is a joy to visit. The staff are friendly, welcoming & helpful, plus they serve some of the best scones/cream teas I've ever had. They welcome well behaved dogs too which is brilliant for all the walkers in the area. Really can't fault the place

We are regular visitors to The Almshouse. The scones are excellent and the clotted cream is served generously. The variety of cakes means there's something for all tastes. The coffee is good and the Belgian hot chocolate superb. The team are always friendly. All that and a well-curated new and second-hand bookshop. Cosy atmosphere inside plus seating on the square.

im really sad as this used to be a lovely place to stop on a walk and sit outside with a drink and a sandwich, i last ate here last year and had a lovely sandwich with a little salad and crisps, however this time we paid the same amount and was given a very sorry looking sandwich, no garnish or crisps and we had to send a search party out for the cheese, we spoke with the staff who stated that the owner is cutting back on the food!! but did offer to "pad out" the sandwich with some more cheese and some pickle, i wouldn't mind but this sandwich cost 5.95. totally unacceptable we won't be returning, there are nicer places to eat in the square!

Afternoon tea with friends. It was lovely! I had the vegan option which was delicious! A suggestion would be to perhaps add some whipped vegan cream to the tea, which would add to the lovely experience, but it really was a lovely spread. Our pot of tea was constantly topped up, at no extra cost, and at no point did we feel hurried. We were able to take some of the cakes home in a doggy bag, to enjoy later and avoid waste. Thank you for a wonderful afternoon

We were trying to get into the cafe opposite as it had tables in the sun, and it wasn’t immediately obvious where the entrance to the Almshouse is (10 yards down street). The outside seating doesn’t look as appealing as it’s neighbor - but once inside it’s a different story. A really nice menu with an excellent selection of cakes and sandwiches and great coffee, served by friendly staff. The Almshouse itself is really pretty inside, with a bookshop, and spiral staircase taking you to more seating. Next time we’re in Axbridge we’ll be heading straight there!

Our whole experience with The Almshouse tea shop was great from start to finish. We did make a few specific requests and had to make a change to the date of our booking due to illness but nothing was too much trouble. The lady I dealt with was lovely, as were all the staff. The tea shop is in a gorgeous setting and there were lots of beautiful details inside that made it lovely and unique. The afternoon tea was delicious and made with very high quality ingredients. We were surprised at the variety of sandwich fillings and the home-made scones were still warm and "melt in the mouth" dreamy. The cakes were equally as fresh and delicious with lots of variety, the Bakewell tart was particularly outstanding. The staff were very attentive, offering to top up our tea and pack any leftovers for us. Without a doubt the best afternoon tea we have ever had!

We were looking for somewhere nice to stop for lunch whilst on the way to Ilminster and found The Almshouse Tea Shop on Google. Highly recommended, I phoned to see if we needed to book a table, as we were only 20 minutes away, and the lady who picked up the phone (the owner?) was super friendly & helpful. When we arrived we found a table outside (we were told there was no need to book - this time) and as the tea shop is set in the historical market square, the views of the buildings surrounding us were beautiful. I went inside and ordered a sausage roll & salad and also a cheese & red onion scone, plus a some cakes. Everything was absolutely delicious! The lady who brought our food out was the same lady I spoke to on the phone and again, she was super helpful. She told us about the Axbridge Heritage Trail which we will definitely try next time. Would strongly recommend The Almshouse Tea Shop and intend to visit again upon our return journey in a few days!

Fabulous old building just off the square in Axbridge. We were lucky enough to get a table for lunch & had drinks & quiche after a couple of laps of the reservoir. My friend considers herself a hot chocolate connoisseur & she said it was one of the best hot chocolates she has had (I think it was Belgian chocolate). The quiche & salad was lovely and we took some slices of the homemade cherry bakewell home with us. All lovely but the staff especially were friendly & welcoming. I also noticed dog's were welcome.

Prices on the menu(s) on the tables out front are out of date it seems as when we paid we were charged more as the menu behind the counter states different/increased prices. The law makes it illegal for businesses to mislead you about the price of an item(s) hence the score here, while ATS choose to stick to their story rather than refund the difference (the pricing on the table menu). In addition the coffee was disappointing.

We were on our way home from holiday, and stopped in Axbridge to look for lunch. We weren't sure that the Almshouse was any more than a tea shop, but we went inside and were impressed by the scope (and reasonable pricing) of the menu. Sitting outside in the sunlit courtyard, where the old stone walls create a marvellous backdrop for the abundant flowers (obviously well tended), was pleasant, but the universal friendliness of everyone on the staff was even better. The food was great, fresh and generous (I've never seen such thick slices of bread, or so much brie and cranberry stuffed between them); the cakes were home made, or so it seemed, and crumbly and moist. They were busy, but unflappable, and service was prompt and thoughtful. We'll be back before too long.

Have been in this tea shop a lot over the years. Have always thought it a lovely place especially for lunch, which it is. However, I can only give it a 3 after my last visit. I have never felt so unwelcome and uncomfortable in a cafe before. I went in late morning last week with my husband for coffee, we hadn't time for lunch that day. The older woman who served us was not overly friendly when we just ordered coffee. Quite a few tables were reserved which was unusual as it was coffee time not lunch time. As we had our coffee and ordered 2 more, I became increasingly aware of the frustrated looks that we were getting from the woman. I guess they were turning people away because of the reserved tables and wanted our table for lunch (It was still late morning!). We didn't intend staying long anyway. The straw that broke the camels back was when the younger, possibly owner, very pleasantly told us that the traffic warden was around so not to get caught. Apart from the fact that we had walked it was very obvious that they wanted us to go. Very passive aggressive. Maybe don't reserve tables next time so you can maximise footfall customs! Anyway, this one encounter has tainted my view of this place which is such a pity as it has a lot going for it. As you are in the hospitality industry you need to work on your hospitality. We have been good customers in the past but no more. Maybe you should write a sign on the door to say you have to be out by 12 if you're just having coffee and cake. Hopefully you'll be treated well if you have lunch.

We regularly visit this beautiful little tea room, and are always welcomed by smiling, friendly faces. The food is superb, fresh & tasty. From their ‘soup-wich’ to a classic cream tea, we have always left satisfied. You definitely get value for money! Nothing is ever too much trouble, and this was highlighted today when Nicky very kindly went out of her way to accommodate us at the last minute. We shall look forward to our next visit soon!

Booked for 4 adults for cream tea. We also had 2 little children with us . The food was amazing and despite our best efforts and the help of the children we could not finish it .No problems with that as what was left was all boxed up and taken home to enjoy later. The boys were kept busy with the toys and crayons that were already there.

Enjoyed a wonderful afternoon tea for our ruby wedding. Warm scones jam and cream absolutely scrummy with huge slices of home made cake plus assorted sandwiches. Must admit it beat us both and we ended up taking it home. Unlimited drinks to finish it all off. Nicky and her team do a great job friendly service nothing too much trouble. All in a lovely traditional setting great ambience for just a coffee or a meal. Deserved of a gold award. Its got to mean something travelling from Penzance to celebrate. Absolutely awesome food and customer service. Make the time to call in and sample the delights the tea room offers. Only downside we arrived to find it up for sale so hoping we will make another journey before long to repeat it. Perhaps one of their exceptional varieties of paninis.

Visited Wednesday lunchtime. This was my second visit. First was a quick coffee whilst waiting for a bus. Now it was lunch. A cold January day and they were busy but they coped very well. Limited menu but food is excellent and very reasonably priced. Worth a detour to sample their paninis. Now the down side - it's up for sale! - and we all know what happens when a superb eatery changes hands.

The English breakfast was superb. The diversity and attention to detail in the premises was exemplary. The cleanliness was exceptional. The friendliness was endearing. No wonder this place has been awarded 5 Stars for the last 5 years. The best example of a well-run business I have seen in many years. Thank you.

A go to pub in the centre of Bridgwater that has retained a lot of character but still feels well maintained and well run. No loud music or distracting TV screens and a good range of drinks.

It’s not often that I find a cup cake almost as good as when I make them myself, but the cupcakes we purchased were great, fresh, filled and nice amount of topping. Loved the theatre of the cakes being made in the shop. Would almost say as good as magnolia’s in New York

The pub is closed due to a lengthy refurb, but there is a cafe in the smokery next door run by the same family. We enjoyed a platter of smoked seafood made on-site for lunch. It was seriously good, with some clever tastes. The Salmon was just brilliant. We bought some in the Deli to take home. Highly recommended.
