This used to be a great pub but under current management I won’t be going back there. I’ve been going there for nearly 20 years and it makes me sad to see how a great pub has been ruined by pretentiousness. The atmosphere is overambitious with gilded mirrors, the kind of place where no one seems to be laughing. The fact that you can’t go to the bar to fetch a drink is just ridiculous in a small place like this, the table service is unbelievably slow, and all the waiting staff are inexperienced which speaks badly of the management (clearly a lot of turnover if everyone is new). We had to ask twice for our food - and this was just a side order of bread! When it did eventually arrive, the bread was so oily we didn’t want to eat it. The menu is overly pretentious and quite frankly insulting to vegetarians. There are many different style options for meat eaters, but the only main courses for vegetarians are basically sickeningly posh versions of the kind of fare we got 30 years ago: glorified boiled carrots or stuffed peppers. There’s no “proper pub food” option for vegetarians at all. There’s a meat burger, but no veggie version of it. Who goes to a pub to eat posh boiled carrots with their beer? When I pointed this out, the waitress mumbled something inaudible and walked away. Clearly my custom was not appreciated, so my friends and I left. On the plus side, it wasn’t difficult to find a table on a Saturday night, but after this experience I’m not surprised. Thankfully there are many nice pubs with decent food in the area.

Without exception the best Sunday roast I have had and I tend to have Sunday roasts at award winning pubs. I chose ghe pork option and never had anything as tasty or well cooked. Absolutely delicious 😋

If this isn't the best pub in London, the world is mad! It always has an amazing atmosphere - friendly and welcoming - with really lovely staff. We visit regularly and, on our latest visit, it was a Burns Night menu which was absolutely fabulous! (Scallops were perfection!). In the winter it's cosy inside, with fires blazing, and in the summer, their beautiful outdoor space is the best. They have a great range of beers and wines and the food is always inventive and delicious. I cannot recommend The Alma highly enough.

The most gorgeous pork chop. Unbelievably good. Absolutely perfect portion size, the meat was just perfect so juicy and the crackling that came with it was delicious. Partner's steak was great too. Love this pub. Staff were friendly and attentive as always.

A really lovely pub, the staff were very welcoming and brilliant all through the night. Started in the all covered back garden area which is lovely and toasty and also had table service. Then transferred to the main pub for dinner. The dinner was delicious. The atmosphere was great, and we will definitely be returning

Website says kitchen open until 9pm on a Sunday but not when we turned up at 8.30. We were told, rather flatly, that the kitchen had run out of roasts (not that we wanted a roast). We realised we we’re getting natch as the “computer says no” attitude of the barman didn’t give us the impression there would be a work around. V frustrating - we did find somewhere whose kitchen was open as advertised

Wish Grace Dent had been with me as I certainly didn't get the experience she did. Have to agree with so many other reviews. The service is mainly apathetic despite the 12.5% automatic service charge. The table and chairs we had were so rickety they made me uneasy. The salt !! No wonder there are no condiments on the table when the food is massively overly seasoned before it gets to you. Sunday lunch - £21 (plus 12.5%) - two small pieces of beef. Three roasties, one carrot, 3 thin sprigs of sprouting broccoli and some watery red cabbage. The Yorkshire pudding was huge but so badly cooked. Rock hard exterior yet not cooked through, stodgy batter in the middle. One member of staff who seemed interested in their job, the rest couldn't appear less interested. No-one asked how the food was ? This really isn't an experience we'll repeat. £92 for two people for a tragic experience. Very difficult to find a positive.

The food and service was good, but the outside tables area needs a total re-furb: Old leaves left scattered all over the floor plastic grass floor, and collected outside against the tent awnings that looked to have not been cleared for weeks/months. There is green mould on the outside of the tent awnings which darkens the space even more. The drain in the floor by the bar was overflowing with stagnant water. The whole outside, tented space is very dark. The door to the tented area is shoddily made, and dirty, plus doesn't automatically close so one of our party was eating in a substantial side-draught. The flower stall in the side return I guess is not The Alma's space, but as it's not kept tidy next to the shoddy door to the tented area, perhaps they should consider covering that window so diners don't get to see dead flower paraphernalia and general rubbish. The floor is uneven and difficult to walk on, the plastic grass to hide it is a rather naff (sorry.) The whole outside space feels completely detached from the pub itself. We wanted to go to The Alma, but instead were sat in a draughty, dark place that felt like we were dining at a festival for photophobics, rather than a restaurant. The outside area is a great opportunity to extend the lovely place inside the pub/restaurant, but it needs re-thinking, re-furbishing, and essentially, a financial injection - even just a small one. And more importantly, a good old tidy up. Appreciate things have been difficult for the hospitality industry over the last few years, but sadly, unless we get an inside table next time (which even though I booked the day previously, were unavailable on the online booking system), we won't be going to The Alma again. Additionally, I was emailed after the visit asking me to provide feedback - which I did per above. I spent time to think about fair comments and put the feedback together. Disappointingly, the effort I put in to feedback - as requested, was then not acknowledged at all! Not even a 'thank you'. Had they done, I would have been happy to keep my feedback between me and them, instead of this review in a public domain. This really didn't have to be a disappointing experience.

This is the second time I've tried just to have a drink at this pub - and on both occasions I have walked straight back out - informing the staff - 'I'll go spend my money elsewhere'. I appreciate that The Alma; which I knew from yester year, has changed and geared more towards food. However the attitude of the bar staff - leaves a lot to be desired. "Have you booked a table" "No - do we have too?" "Yes - all tables are booked" "We just want a drink" "You can drink outside" "So I can't have a drink at the bar" "No" So for the second time experiencing this same scenario - we walked out. The Alma needs to improve on welcoming customers. I don't like to feel I'm not welcome and being told what I can and can't do - if I'm the customer! We popped over the road to to the pub opposite - and was served straight away - from helpful, welcoming staff - Gives you a better feeling when the bar staff say. "Enjoy your drink and have a good weekend."

We went for an early Christmas dinner at The Alma - it was too early for their Christmas menu so we had Sunday lunch instead. I don't often leave reviews but I really wanted to on this occasion as it was a fabulous lunch - one of the best roasts I've ever had, if not the best! Friendly staff and a lovely ambience too. Terribly disappointed as I had high expectations given fab review by Grace Dent. We were very encouraged by excellent starters but were shocked by the insipid offering which was to follow. The two vegetarian dishes were what can only be described as a rip off and what’s worse they were inedible. We are used to paying over the odds for vegetarian food but £18 for a plate of squash with little favour or other texture was beyond redeemable. The pasta dish was cooked to the state of mush that even weaning baby would spurn. We complained but were met with a lacklustre “we will let the chef know”. We were left feeling that we were below the lowest of the low in the pecking order which does not encourage us to return in a hurry. It felt as though I was transported back to that time a few decades ago when bad food was the norm that a polite customer really should not complain if they know what is good for them. I have not had such vapid food in a long time and I will not be scurrying back.

This place got a great review in The Guardian so I thought I'd give it a try for Sunday Lunch. Journey from the burbs wasn't great...typical inner London journey...slow and unpleasant. And when you get there, parking is a bit of nightmare. Inside, it's not shabby chic....more shabby charity shop. Uncomfortable rickety chairs and tables. A bit grubby with dust and cobwebs evident. Drinks...I fancied an alcohol free beer but the prices....£6 for just over half a pint...a total rip off. Had a pint of Brick Session IPA instead....very nice pint for the same price. Roasts were OK. Plates were too small and piled high. Roast potatoes weren't great. No salt and pepper on the table. And again, what prices...nearly £19.50 for roast pork! Finished with coffee and an affogato which was ruined by being served in a tumbler. Had to ask for sugar for the coffee. Service was poor...unattentive on a relatively quiet Sunday lunchtime...but nevertheless attracted a 12.5% service charge! I won't be going back. And as the recession bites, I suspect that this place will struggle unless it up its game and lowers its prices.

Love the Alma, nice local. Lunch for 4 on Tuesday 24/05/22 was a let down, should have said something, with sons & didn’t want a fuss. All the dishes were over salted. Who sprinkles salt on houmous? The deep fried cauliflower so salty inedible. Maybe the regular chef was off or is unable to deal with constructive feedback? The steak was ordered medium rare was over. On the plus side the waitress was nice & the chips were ok. I would not go back for food. Cut down the salt Alma too much!

Sometimes the food here is amazing (there prawn sambal they did a while ago was to die for!) but other times it’s barely edible… the Sunday roasts I find particularly hit and miss. i do t know what method they use for there roast potatoes, but they are like hard tasteless rocks. I suspect they’ve been pre cooked then microwaved, but really not sure… I’ve encountered this on more then one meal. On the last visit my partner ordered the vegetarian haggis, which he found inedible, there veggie options aren’t great generally as they are all quite oily! So unfortunately I don’t think I’ll be able to persuade my vegetarian partner to try eating there again. Sad really as they are also very capable of sending out some really delicious food. I’m afraid we’ve had one to many dishes that just weren’t good.

We sat outside in the heated tent and had the fried chicken starter- not bad, better sauce, and the pork croquettes which were delicious and with an amazing dip. My partner had the duck. This place has gone seriously downhill. As others have indicated, it's neither kid nor dog friendly any more. But that's not the worst of it.1. Their COVID registration sucks. Why only have one person doing it, who is also taking drinks orders at the bar at the same time? There was a queue out the door, with a heavily pregnant woman in front of me who was clearly in need of sitting down, just because of this stupid system.2. Service - very, very poor now. They could easily have gotten another two rounds worth of drinks out of our table had the service staff not been ignoring us during our strict 2 hour slot. Also, it was rude. 3. Food is bad. Prices have gone up everywhere, sure, but they really need to up their game. The menu selection is also poor. None of us liked our food but there was no one paying attention to our table to complain to.The only thing going for this place is the outdoor space, but compared to how other pubs are run (eg the White Hart), it really isn't worth it.The other reviews are right - GO ELSEWHERE. Such a shame as it was such a nice pub before.

We were excited to go for Sunday Lunch as we had heard the food was great and they were dog friendly. Arrived and their COVID registration system was chaotic at best - one point of entry, one person taking registrations, Sunday lunchtime crowd. Our son was told to wait outside while they checked in a group of people who arrived after us. We were given a table by the door - asked for one at the back as we had our dog but were told it was already allocated - no problem. Asked to speak to the Manager as by then we were already feeling unwelcome. Manager came over, told us that their system didn't allow changes to tables but that he would tell the owner - no problem again. Owner ended up being the person who was checking people in. Was told of our feedback but didn't even bother to come and talk to us himself. I don't have a problem with the fact that they couldn't move tables (literally swap us with another 4 table which was empty) but that the owner and manager couldn't be bothered to take feedback. Sitting by the door with a dog meant none of us could settle and didn't make for a comfortable lunch. We felt so upset by the way we were treated we didn't stay for lunch. Don't recommend if you're not trendy, have kids or a dog.

Having previously dined here and had a lovely experience, I was disappointed when I visited this week. Having checked their website for the menu choices (I am a vegetarian, so always check in advance), I was more than disappointed to discover the menu was not the same as advertised on their website and they have only 1 vegetarian dish on offer?!?!! When I queried this, they said 'oh yes the website hasn't been updated'! Not very helpful. The waitress was trying to be helpful by offering to provide a mix of starters to make up a main course, but there were only 3 items on the starters menu that was vegetarian anyway. All in all, if you are a vegetarian/vegan, it is very limited and I wouldn't recommend. Also, the bar could do with investing in some proper gin glasses too, as having a gin in a spirit glass was not so good.

We decided to try out the Alma on a Sunday afternoon. We didn’t have a reservation but they said they had a table so we sat down. Unfortunately the table was horrendous. Cramped between 2 other tables and in the blistering sun. We ordered our food but we were incredibly uncomfortable and hot, with my husband having the sun shining directly in his face. The girl who served us was very sweet and helpful and we asked if it would be possible to move to another table across the room we could see was free. She asked the manager who said “no it’s reserved.” The girl was very apologetic and had our food not been on the way we probably would have left. Dining out is meant to be a nice experience, not an uncomfortable one. I probably would have been less annoyed had the table we asked to be moved to actually been used. No one was shown to that table until we were leaving. Leaving hot and red in the face when we simply could have been moved table was not acceptable, especially when this place isn’t cheap (and the food mediocre at best). This place could do with a manager with a bit more common sense i.e. keeping the customers happy who are already there rather than people who hadn’t even turned up. Either that or invest in some blinds!

We were booked for lunch on Sunday 9th from 2pm. We arrived and the table wasn't ready but no biggie, had a drink at the bar. We sat and ordered promptly, starters came out speedily, had a bit of a wait for the mains but again, good company so no problem. Until we asked to see the dessert menu when we were told we didn't have time to eat dessert as they had another booking at 4pm. This was about 3.45pm or so. Our waitress checked with the manager and yes we were told we did not have time. Apart from the fact that we were seated late - which we had to remind them - it's their job to serve us food within the time allocated. To be told 'You don't have time' is such terrible customer service and we certainly won't be back.

We turned up quite late for a Saturday lunch and were immediately shown to a table for four. We had a very attentive waiter who couldn't have been more helpful and attentive, even getting extra drinks for us from the bar. Excellent food - the moules were as good as any I have had for long time and all the food came together and was hot and nicely presented and good portions.

Trendy pub. What is extremely disappointing is that it has no sense of its own history. Built in 1854, it Alma Place adjacent to it, are named to commemorate the Battle of the Alma (1854) which took place during the Crimean War. There is nothing at all on display in the pub to show this. The Alma pub in Addiscombe, by contrast, has paintings of the battle, maps etc a-plenty, to signal the connection to visitors. Poor show.

I've walked past this place quite a few times without realising what a great big beer garden it has. Perfect for an outdoor Sunday lunch. The staff are great. We got a nice welcome from the barman, and Jade couldn't have been nicer when we completely changed our order after seeing someone else's food. Lovely people.

We had a booking at 3pm but the table wasn’t available for half an hour. Then we waited over an hour for our food at a cramped table. The food was average, the roasts were pretty good but some of it was cold and the burger was tiny. Wouldn’t go back to be honest. Just felt like they were massively over stretched and have tried to cram in as many tables as they can to the detriment of the experience.

Just visited our local pub during this great heatwave and the pub was heaving. The three of us (wife and baby) found a seat in the courtyard and we were promptly served. Drinks arrived straight away but unfortunately due to the many numbers of people in the pub and being Father's Day the food took a while to come. The staff were apologetic and kept us informed throughout. The food came and it was delicious and the manager kindly took the food off the bill due to the wait. Fantastic service and food and will as always recommend this pub to friends and family.

This was my first time at the Alma. It was recommended to me by a friend who lives locally. Made a booking over the phone for 5 people. The man who answered the phone was ever so pleasant. I thought: good start. We went last Sunday, party of 5. The food was truly excellent. My husband and I had the fish and chips which was delicious. Real chips! not the crappy frozen rubbish you usually get. Real chunky hand peeled potatoes. The other guys in the party had the burgers , which they really enjoyed too. The service was very good too. the waitress was very pleasant and smiley. I will definitely return.

Really upset!!! It is completely unnecessary for people who are serving behind a counter to be impolite, unfriendly and obnoxious. Have been to Alma in Crystal Palace with a friend for the first time and I will not return. For the moment we entered to the moment we left we are attended to by -Yasmin, I'm told the manager- who's attitude was appalling! I think that, that lady -and look, I'm not usually a person to make things personally- is going through a bad patch in her life and took it out on my friend and I!As we entered I tried to make conversation about what type of lager was available and she described them to me and recommended a few to me but acted like a robot. My friend made a comment that she was being unfriendly and I had to agree! Later, I went up to the bar to order food, and I get told by Yasmin- No food outside!!! ( just as though I'm back in the blimming military) I asked why and I'm replied to- Management discretion... now for some people that would have been ok but sure don't feel that way... there are ways of saying things which make them more pleasant to the ear! I though to myself- No! That's enough, got my friend and walked out but, not before telling her that she was really not nice and her attitude was not ok! I walked across the road and walked into The Hart! Food is cheaper, people are nicer! Goodbye Alma and Yasmin!

After a small hike on Sunday we ended up having a roast lunch in The Alma. The place was fairly busy when we got there but easily got a table and were served quick. The staff was helpful though not too friendly and service was quick throughout the lunch, however the food was plain, very average. I had roast chicken and for £14.95 one would expect a tastier experience. There are better places in the area with accomodating staff and with better food, I don`t think we will try The Alma anytime soon again.

Oh my goodness, what has happened to this fish bar?? Used to go there every Friday before I moved away from Biggin Hill, but what a shock I had last Friday getting fish & chips for my elderly mother. Slow service with miserable faces, very dirty uniforms being worn by the staff, hair not tied back fully on one of the girls serving. Also, a very young boy helping behind the counter, which surely must be a Health & Safety concern with all the boiling fat!!! Safe to say, I won't be returning to Salisbury's Fish Bar, Main Road, Biggin Hill again :0(

This place has the potential to be a nice pub but based on my personal experience, we will sadly not be returning. It was a sunny afternoon and we decided to come to Downe Village for a nice pub lunch. I noticed there were people eating inside and nobody was seated outside. With it being a sunny day, we thought nothing of it and decided to sit in the beer garden. Within minutes of our food arriving, a black fluffy cat jumped onto the table, stuck it's bum in my face and started eating my food! I tried to shoo it off but it wouldn't budge and I'm allergic to cats. When I went inside to tell a member of staff, her response was "it lives in the garden. Just shoo it away." But it never went away so I went back inside again to tell them and it took her forever to do anything about it. By the time she came out, the cat had eaten half of my food. I appreciate there's not a lot they can do but atleast come out and pick up the cat and take it elsewhere if a paying customer complains they're allergic! Not only that, when I got home, I checked my card statement and noticed they had taken 10% service charge which wasn't shown on the receipt (only food and drinks.) I think that's rather cheeky considering there was no table service - we brought our own food, drinks, cutlery and condiments to the garden table and afterwards I even took the dirty dishes back with the cat's leftovers. A very disappointing visit.
