The Ali Raj in Thanet

My mum and I really fancied a curry while we were in Margate and after doing some research we came across this restaurant! With it already having a high star rating we thought we would give it a try, and we are so glad we did. The staff were so friendly and welcoming, and the food was delicious! We decided to both go for the non-vegetable thali and it was lovely, it included chicken tikka, sheek kebab, meat (lamb) bhuna, chicken curry, rice and naan bread! It was so filling and we left feeling very happy and well fed! I would 100% recommend to anyone in Margate!

Do not order via just eat. Ordered meal at 18.45 on NYE. We knew it would be busy hence the early call. Food finally delivered 22.05 , 2 hours later than promised. Despite numerous phone calls chasing up the order when the restaurant would repeatedly put the phone down when ringing to see where the food was. The final call the male I spoke to told me to stop wasting his time and again put the phone down. No apologies when the food was finally delivered, stone cold and inedible. Now trying to get my money back . Never use this restaurant.

We normally try a curry when we are away. We must say that the food was very good. The starters were great and the main meal. The staff were rather too full on. They were rushing about not seen this before. Anyway we were glad to have dined here. Ex choice

Bland greasy and no taste whatsoever. Will never order again. Absolutely disgusting, all I taste is oil, ordered the meal for one. I noe need to order food elsewhere as this is not edible, it tastes absolutely disgusting

Ordered a take away meal and only saw after paying that the delivery time was an hour. My partner is diabetic and needed to eat asap due to his reading being low. After phoning the restaurant direct to explain, they promptly delivered within 15 minutes from ordering, and the food was lovely. Will definitely be using again. Thanks

I don't often write review's but I couldn't in all honesty bear the thought of anyone else having to eat here, this was without doubt the blandest meal I have ever eaten, nothing we had had any flavour, heat or spice, to call this Indian food is an insult to the whole subcontinent, I have eaten a lot of Indian food and to be fair am probably a bit spoilt living next to east London's green st which has dozens of top class authentic Indian restaurants full of Indian people, but even so the Ali raj was a terrible place , the decor was ok but the service was terribly slow and the food awful ,when we complained that the food was tasteless and without heat, they told us that they cook all their dishes "medium" and if we had wanted hot we should have requested it hot this wasn't even medium a newborn baby would have spat it out as being too bland, They didn't even apologize or offer us a discount despite the fact we ate hardly any of the food, in case I'm not making myself clear Avoid Avoid Avoid at all costs.

The restaurant is really well presented. The serving team are friendly and efficient. The food is superb. I had a chicken chilli masala, with a paratha, the bread was cooked perfectly. The curry was delicious, a really good portion of meat too (many places are cutting back on this, not here, there if anything, too much chicken, I was not able to eat it all). Can definitely recommend.

We ordered takeaway which firstly arrived late. The poppadoms were burnt. The food was cold. We then found all our curried were cold, bland, and had alot of water in them. It was like it was frozen and they just heated it up but not very well. The saag paneer was off and one curries was dry. There was no seasoning or flavour at all. Being Indian i was disappointed with all of it. We then called to complain to be told ‘ oh we will send you some more’!!! We said no we cannot eat this and refused to eat anymore. We requested a refund to be told that the boss was not available today. We went the next day gave them their disgusting food back to be then be spoken to very rudely and the staff were treated like crap by their boss. Don’t go to a curry house that gives you plain curry which has been frozen, you better off using Patak jars they have more flavour than this place.

The food was brilliant magnificent drinks just in general a good restaurant the food is just brilliant it's just the best Indian in westbrook

Ordered a takeaway on a Saturday night and the food was awful. Some strange-looking curries that I couldn't tell you what they were meant to be, just an overpowering taste of cumin and looked like dishwater. Thoroughly disappointed and made me very sick in the morning.

Went here for evening meal and the main problem that they prefer group bookings but then the volume then goes up to a high level and if your only a small group or couple can find it difficult to hear the person sat opposite you. There is always plenty of food and it always taste great, so if you can put up with the noise worth going for a meal.

An excellent family meal out when many other restaurants are not open. Good service, good food, good value and very pleasant surrounds - nothing super remarkable but solid and enjoyable. Would happily return - thanks

What a strange meal. We decided to all order separately and I chose the lamb tikka masala. In total we had about 6 different portions. All tasted the same however my lamb tikka tasted like a coconut pudding. Sickly, sweet, lots of coconut with very few hints of spices.

Poorly cooked bland flavour, of all dishes, no spice at all. Including the samosa starters Therefore over priced and disappointing. if this had been my first taste of Indian dishes I would never be eating them again. Shame really as went out hopeful of a good meal. Wont be back, sorry you asked.

The restaurant was getting busy and the phone was ringing non stop for takeaways! This meant the staff could not be attentive as usual but a great meal nonetheless.

Ordered a lamb Tikia Raziz tonite had no bite at all meat was lovely and tender but the sauce had no heat at all My brother found the lamb aloo curry bland as well The onion bhajis disappointed as well

Ordered a take away , and it really was absolutely superb. Full of flavour, hot and great quantities, but more importantly great value for money. Would highly recommend this restaurant and it’s delicious cuisine.

Ordered as a takeaway, over 2 hours late Food lukewarm and bland , ordered four different dishes , all tasted the same but just a different colour. The lamb in one of the dishes was so chewy it was inedible and tasted like beef

The prawn Pathia was really tasty and spicy Enjoyed the Bombay aloo as well Mixed starter was cooked to perfection

Very dissatisfied customer! We waited over 2 hours for our delivery to arrive when we was told it would be 1 hour. When it arrived there was a curry missing. We telephoned to ask if they could send it out for delivery, only to be told they wouldn’t send it we could collect it if we wanted it! We said we couldn’t pick it up so we could have it free next time but they wouldn’t give us a refund for it either. Correct me if I’m wrong but it’s not free as I’ve already paid, and I certainly won’t be ordering again.

What is happening at this restaurant, has there been a change in management??? We have eaten in, ordered take aways and have seldom had a problem but tonight my daughter ordered a take away to be delivered and waited 3 hours for her meal! She phoned numerous times and was assured the meal was on its way each time, it arrived three hours after the order was placed and needless to say, it was cold. Totally unacceptable and she can’t get through to them to complain and get a refund. We may be in the middle of a pandemic but there is no excuse for such deplorable service.

Ordered our food at 19.00 and told we would receive it at 20.10pm but didn’t receive the order till 9:45pm! Ridiculous!! We waited & waited.. phoned at 20:45 for them to tell us the delivery driver was leaving with our order and that “28 orders came in at once” we then phoned at 21:20 to tell us the driver was on their way. Even though we live 10 minutes away. Food didn’t arrive till 21:45pm!!! Absolute joke! Hardly apologetic and will definitely not be ordering from here again. Future reference, don’t accept “28 orders at once” if you cannot manage them.

Just had a takeaway, staff great food great . Will be using this Indian from now on . Just wondered about the bloke moaning about not wanting to eat halal meat, all fine if that's your choice but why moan about it and go back for more ?? Strange

I wanted a restaurant that serves none halal meat,this place is halal , as an English person I should have the choice.

Went with family for birthday.Everything was a rush although it wasn't busy. Waiter not friendly. Food was ok but I had real bad stomach ache. Probably more to do with rushing food rather than bad food. The banana split for dessert was a joke. Tea plate with split banana, a teaspoon of ice cream and squirted with cream. A 5 year old could present it better. On the positive side. I know where not to go now again.

Went here on weekend . To me and my partner food wasn’t great .but was very busy .and other people seemed to enjoy it .maybe I’ve been spoilt with the choice off food I have in London .plus bring your own hand sanitiser.as we wasn’t offered any .but the plus side staff were nice .and wearing masks.but regrettably I wouldn’t go back .but make your own mind up .

This is the second time have been to this restaurant and the reason being is the food is very good and you get loads, and no matter what size your appetite, we have managed to get two meals for the price of one, as never managed to finish and have taken half of our main course home. Yes we order starters which we share, we also order sides with the mains. We also share like a buffet and still manage to take home. The restaurant of a weekend is always fully booked, it accommodates for small to large groups.

Have eaten in the restaurant and have a lot of takeaway from The Ali Raj. Always very nice food and friendly staff.

Me and my family went there and got a set meal for 5. The set mean is 13pounds each. Within the set meal you get a choice of starter, main, side, rice or Nann. Food is all cooked well and great value for money (so much food!!!) The staff are very attentive, and will do anything for you. Great night.

5 of us went to eat there on Saturday the food was indian food was very good but scampi wasnt good and no vinigar for the chips asked for some and they never had any. Fancy serv ing chips and no vinigar. the indian food was great as always and nice sized portions. the restaurant was too cramped and very uncomfortable . the whole night was ruined as we could not hold a conversation due to the rowdt large blond lady on the next table . I wont be going back to eat there on a Saturday again dissaponting. I understand they are making a living but why bunch up all the tables so you cant move out of your seat without everyone having to get up to let you out. serice was very slow too after main course.

We have always used this restaurant and take away service for five years or more and have yet to be less than delighted with mr Ali and his team, superb!

I’ve always liked Ali raj but last night I ordered a delivery the guy that delivered it was obviously from the restaurant as he was wearing a bow tie and waistcoat,he shoved the bag in my hand and walked off,when I opened the bag I thought he may have been in a car crash my friends meal didn’t have the lid on properly hence food everywhere and my chicken tikka was so tough I needed a sharp knife,so sad

A spontaneous decision for our date night. A superb choice and lived up to it's reviews.Clean, tidy and the service was spot on. Food was amazing however our curry dish could have had more spice and garlic in it. Overall, we enjoyed our meal out and took away our 'doggy bag'Highly recommend.

The Ali Raj is conveniently down the road from where we live and is fab if we fancy a date night especially as it’s in walking distance. The menu is varied and the food is delicious and prices are reasonable. The staff are courteous and friendly and service is good. A great place for a meal in nice surroundings. Would recommend

Used to be our favourite indian before we moved away seven years ago. Our visit this week. Was as good as it used to be. With Ali still at the helm. Both quality and value for money is brilliant. All the food served to us was perfect. We look forward to another visit.

Choice very wide. Service perfect. Food hot and delicious. Drinks reasonably priced. Definitely worth a visit - parking outside.

My husband and I went here with my bother in law. We had the meal deal. It was very nice, great flavours but to much to eat. My brother in law enjoyed it so much he asked for a doggy bag and had it for lunch the following day. He said it tasted just as good as the night before. Go on give this Indian a try.

Been here many times with friends begrudgingly I should add. The food is overly greasy , all the same colour and taste. Usually end up with a bad belly.

The family booked our granddaughters 18th and we were received by the owners and showed to our table. The food was served very quickly and also the deserts were excellent. Good food and good company.

This is one of my favourite places to eat in Margate. The food is always great quality, generous portions and cheap too. We've been going to this restaurant for 25 years, and never been disappointed. The spicy dishes really pack a punch, and you can also get a good Korma if that's more your thing.

I have been going to that restaurant since the 80s. Abdul is a lovely chap and his voice can rise but that's not in anger! The food is of a consistent high standard, service is efficient and friendly. I've tried most dishes (I don't fancy fish in any Bngladeshi restaurant s so can't comment) and whatI haven't enjoyed was down to my choice rather than the dish itself.

We celebrated our new year with a take away from this popular curry house. As usual lamb biriyani was delicious. Looking forward to ordering again.

Having been told that the Ali Raj was a must have Indian, i am more than disappointed.

Love the Ali Raj! The party menu is excellent value for money. A little disappointing last time we went as the staff were quite obviously rushing us through the courses as it was quite late at night (10.30ish) when we arrived. It was still a great meal and I would be happy to recommend.

I travelled to kent for a birthday getaway. I went Here for dinner. It wws the worst decision ever. Initially things were fine, however it all went downhill from when the food came.

Wish we had one like this in Liverpool.

Quick service, decent sized portions but dull as dish water. We had the vege set meal for two. Bland and no spicy heat.

Lovely warm and friendly welcome. We booked a table of 11 and the service and food was very very good. A little mix up on the order but that was rectified instantly and without fuss. Brilliant interaction between staff and party. We never felt rushed and the staff couldn't do enough for us. Brilliant 5 course offer that arrived hot and tasty. I will certainly return. Thank you for making my birthday girl feel very special.

Just moved to Westbrook around the corner from the restaurant & what a wonderful surprise. A warm welcome, very reasonable prices & probably the best Indian food we have ever had. The tali was delicious, the papadums freshly made & crunchy, the naan light & lovely. Fantastic restaurant, would definitely recommend & will certainly be back.

We visited this restaurant last night. Found the service to be very poor. Mostly surly and unfriendly staff. Just seemed to want you fed and out asap. The food was ok, nothing special.

First time using Ali Raj's takeaway service, and it certainly will not be the last! The food was tasty and not swimming in fat which you get with some Indian takeaways. In fact it was one of the best curry's we have purchased in ages - and my husband does like curry's...... It also worked out cheaper than a kebab takaway we had a few weeks ago with less food, and taste!

We had another lovely evening here with friends. We had the £11.95 menu and it was excellent, a good choice of starters and mains, all cooked well and very tasty. We had a few bottles of the house wine which was good too. All in all a good evening

I have recently started using this restaurant for my weekly take away and cannot fault the food,it is served with a smile,they are very efficient as have used them for 2 months now and the food is always hot and tasty with good sized portions,never any items missing and love their chicken Tikk ,they are now my number one...thank you to the staff as now I can order with confidence that I will recieve lovely food on time as unfortunately this has not been the case with other restaurants I have tried! :)

We ordered a takeaway for a family meal. We were given a time for delivery and after waiting double the time I had to telephone to chase the order. The order eventually came but we were too hungry to enjoy it. The food wasn’t great.

This is my number one choice for Indian food, the staff are incredible, the food is the best thing ever, their Chicken Korma is my favourite thing to order and you get 5 courses for £11.95. It’s so worth it, I absolutely love this place! If you’re looking for an amazing meal at a good price, I would highly recommend this place!

Having craved an Indian all day today after being told its National Curry Week I googled the best places to go whilst in Margate for work.

The best delicious indian take out in Margate.

It was my birthday on the 14th September the wife was away working hard and I was on my own so decided to go for a Indian on the Saturday when she was back home instead of cooking. So had a look at Indian Restaurants in the area the we had not been too before and chose the Ali Raj on the Canterbury Road. I booked the table for 6pm as don't like to eat to late at the weekend, when we arrived we was greeted by friendly staff who sat us at a table and gave us the menu. There was one other table of four in the restaurant, I ordered four popper doms with a selection of chutneys a lamb Tikka starter and Chicken Tikka Rogan with mushroom and coconut rice the wife had prawn puree starter King prawn Rogan and bombay potato saag aloo and garlic nan bread and a couple of alcoholic drinks. The popper doms came out in a couple of minutes once we had finished them the starters came out which was lovely after that was done with in 10 min the main was brought out which looked and smelled lovely. My Tikka Rogan was lovely big bits of chicken in a lovely sauce the wife's King prawn rogan had lovely big prawns in the sauce she enjoyed it very much .I could not finish mine as by the time I had had half of the meat dish a plater of rice half a plater of bombay potato and some saag aloo there was no more room for the rest. We took the rest home in a doggy bag which I had the next morning lovely. The whole meal came to £52.60 which was pretty good the food was lovely and the staff very attentive and friendly i would recommend a visit if you are thinking of a night out at a nice Indian restaurant in the Thanet area.

Ordered a takeaway and collected with the 20% discount so very reasonable. The service was polite, courteous and attentive. The jalfrezi was fiery and very tasty. The naan was a bit soggy and not really garlicky enough for me but adequate none the less. If you are in the area and fancy a curry, I would recommend.

Ive been twice and each time wished I'd gone else where. It promises much but delivers little. On the plus side I like the hot town. Over priced for the quality and content.

We have lived in the area for 10 years and have driven past this restaurant many times without giving it a thought. However, go inside and you have a relaxed, friendly feel, lovely decor and you feel you are not on a main road to Margate, but somewhere more salubrious!Great staff, the food was fantastic. The portions looked good sized but once you dive in, the portions were bloody massive!Me and hubby,a big old bloke, left some food despite loving it. It was so satisfying and we wanted to eat more but our stomachs said "no". Also, bloody cheap. 2 x large wines, half a pint of Cobra for the lady, half point of lemonade for the bloke, starters and 2 x main course around £40.This place will definitely become a local!

Myself and partner have been regularly visiting this restaurant for many many years and it is always fantastic! Great value for money, friendly staff, quick delivery when not eating in. The quality of food is brilliant! We recently tried a higher Trip Advisor rated restaurant locally and were left disappointed and the bill was double in price! Needless to say we will continue to stick with Ali Raj! Thanks once again for a great meal :)

Nice place - pity about the food, way too much SALT and all the dishes had the same sauce. The meal would have cost lot less if we had not had to keep topping up due to the SALT - we have passed this many times and thought we would give it a try - done that - won't be back.

Ordered a take away and went to collect it only to get there and revieve a discount for collecting was more then enough food to fill us up! Definitely worth every penny delish...

We went in here and had the £11.95 per person menu. We enjoyed the starter of onion bahgee, poppadoms and nan bread. The main I had the lamb madras, it was lovely and the lamb tender and the madras a good heat and not as hot as some. There was a lot of food, we shared rice and naan bread plus our meals and we were stuffed and had to leave some. Friendly staff and a good experience

The food from the Ali Raj is amazing, I won't go anywhere else locally since I found this place as this just can't be beaten. Reasonably priced and tastes fantastic, large portions too. Staff are friendly and professional, they do a great eat-in deal or 20% discount for takeaway collections. I've managed to convert my partner into wanting Indian takeaway as this place was so good!

Was looking for a local Indian restaurant to visit for my birthday so decided to check out Ali Raj based on its reviews on trip advisor. I was not disappointed the food was 10/10 the customer service was 10/10 the atmosphere was 10/10 me and my partner went for the set menu for two it was £25 and we had to take the rest home cause the portion was very generous. So if your reading this review and wondering if you should go well take it from GO you won't be disappointed

I went on Saturday afternoon with my wife.the waiter pointed out the table and disappear for 5 minutes.food was average .But the waiter have provided my bill without asking me and my wife was Still having her meal.I was shocked.i am ashamed to admit that i was there for food.Run away..

I can't actually believe how rude these people have been to both me and my wife. They put hidden charges on our bill and then were rude just because we told them about it. The food is average at best. if you are looking for a good indian restaurant in this area try monsoon.
