Reopened by Jen who has done an excellent job on making The Alex an authentic pub experience again. They cater to pretty much anyone with quirky memorabilia on the walls, darts, pool, video games and a massive secret back garden with intimate booths. It ticks all the right boxes and it's also family and pet friendly. Also the burgers are in my humble opinion the best I've had and I'm not really a burger guy plus they cater to all my veggie and vegan friends too. Photo's to follow next time I visit. Check out this hidden gem and I guarantee you will not be let down.

Came across the Alexandra while looking for a bite to eat and couldn’t fault it at all: burger was excellent, selection of drinks left no room for complaint and both staff and regulars were wonderfully friendly. Will definitely return next time I’m in Southampton

Always a very relaxed place, especially at lunch times. The food is a good price and tastes amazing. If you want a bite and a drink highly recommend stopping by, or if you are planning an extended stay, then nab one of the board games from the side and have a good time.

New owner - nice place but very quiet on a Tuesday. Hope it picks up - the menu looks good but we didn’t eat. I’m going again soon and will update!

We just popped in for a late lunch. We both had burgers which were really good. The chips were amazing. Maybe a little expensive but that’s the times we’re living in. Service was fast and friendly. It’s a nice place. The atmosphere was a little dead but that was likely due to the time we visited.

We don’t live too far from the Alex and it’s great to find a brilliant pub under new ownership just around the corner! Saw some people with food last weekend so we ordered the smash burgers and were not disappointed. Great portion sizes and amazing burgers with lovely chunky chips which is different from skinny fries at other places. Really friendly staff too which creates a really nice vibe to the whole pub. Recommend for friends to come sit in the beer garden as well as families to come for food.

We found being afternoon visitors that the ale was stale as it hadn't been pulled and tasted . Staff seemed very lacking in get up and go.( too much phone gazing) the garden was great loved the swing benches and wall murals .we had three different servings of chips all were hot and tasty

The Alex has made a triumphant return with smash burgers for carnivorous and plant eating visitors alike! I visited with my friend to trial their menu and it was fab. Great frickles, burgers and chunky fries. I'll be back!

The Alex has had some ups and downs in the 7 years I've loved in Southampton but it's always had a fond place in my heart, so I was overjoyed when I saw a few months ago the absolute legend Jen was taking it over. In the last few weeks since it's reopened she's done some lovely things to bring a warm atmosphere back, and has introduced an incredible new burger menu catering to meat eaters, veggies, and vegans. I highly recommend anyone give the new vibe a go, and am glad to have it back as my new (old) go to place for good food and a hang

Spent 15 minutes looking for a pub with decent beer. Seems like real ale is disappearing from city centre pubs. Remembered the Alex from a few years back so checked it out. Good beer, good atmosphere if a little noisy at times. Even had a game of pool. Recommended.

Nice place, always has been. But came in on a Friday evening for a works leaving drinks, the card machine wasn't working so could only pay in cash (which not many of the group had) and there were very little beers available. Not the best start on a Friday evening where they could have potentially made a killing, but all but 7 or so stayed and went elsewhere. Shame, wouldn't stop me coming back there, but oops...

This pub stays open till 5am blaring music out on a residential road filled with children trying to sleep. Have the pleasure of listening to the drunks screaming and shouting as they leave.

Large Beer Garden with covered and open seating. Fantastic Sunday Roasts and regular food menu with options for all taste and food requirements. They also have regular live music and DJs event and have TV screens to show live sport.

The one bar staff was wonderful, but needed at least 1, if not 2 more to cope with the level of Business

They got rid of the one thing that made the place unique, the pinball machine. Bad move in my opinion. Unlikely to go back.

Fantastic! Come here often with friends, especially for the food. Lots of amazing options to choose from. Sunday roast yesterday was also absolutely divine!

Popped in with friends for Sunday lunch and it was delish. Highly recommend the beef short ribs. Great portion size only wished I had ordered the cauliflower cheese as it looked amazing!

Stopped in for another Sunday roast at the Alex today and was impressed as ever. Good portions and really tasty. Nice selection of veg and amazing gravy! Kids roasts are great and Mac n cheese yummy for the non roast lover. Would highly recommend.

Bloody good food and I mean that it's FAR above standard pub grub! Unfortunately their range of lagers on tap were a little disappointing but with a decent amount of ales, ciders and spirits it's not a deal breaker. Will definitely go back again.

Meet here with a group of photographers and models every other month. Good selection of drinks, staff are friendly and don't mind us moving tables & chairs.

Was an ok place, to be honest was probably the wrong time to go on a Saturday afternoon. Ended up leaving to go somewhere else. Friendly staff though. Just lots of young people..felt like I was in a crèche

Called in whilst down in Southampton to watch Manchester City. Nice friendly bar staff and Blue Moon beer on draught.Plenty of big sceens to watch the footy. Good to chat to one of the Saints fans ( really nice guy) pity about the idiot ( There's always one) . Overall a good experience and would go back.

I was always a big fan of the old Alex, with it's Star Wars memorabilia and mix of students and working patrons. Knowing there was new ownership I was keen to see how the pub was getting on so popped in late afternoon one Friday in the run up to Christmas. The film memorabilia has all gone and the area behind the bar is slightly different but the layout of the pub itself is the same, with a large open area wrapped around the central bar. The new decor is nice and the furniture is the modern hodge podge of varieties. Special mention for the wonderful huge Christmas tree in one corner! Like many pubs, the pool table has been removed for now to make more room for seating because the pub still offers a good looking menu and offers roast dinners on a Sunday. Unfortunately there is currently no draught real ale on offer. The friendly bar person, John, explained that it wasn't selling but they hoped to offer real ales again in future. For now there are three keg beers on offer, Sharp's Atlantic (£4.70 a pint) and Beavertown's Gamma Ray (£5.80 a pint) & Neck Oil IPA. A bit pricey, kegs are, but both were in good condition and tasty. The area out the back is still there and is spacious and looks great with some twinkly lights and a marque to protect you from the rain. I hope the pub continues to do well in these difficult times. It started to get a bit busier as I finished my second pint. The pub deserves to do well and it looks like it's in good hands.

The pictures are outdated on Google . The place is quite nice. Though not fully disabled access. A medium sized curbside step can be navigated with aid but otherwise there seems to be no access for people in a wheelchair. Service is fast and polite . Nice little pub and venue.

This place has gone downhill. The last time I went with two of my sons for a drink after a Saints game but waited for an eternity to get served whilst "regulars" waltzed up to the bar and were served straight away. The mens toilets were also out of order. Not very welcoming and would definitely not recommend this place if you have children.

Since lockdown this place has been getting better and better and is in the best condition for years and sells great quality food!

Happy place to live music sports and a brilliant atmosphere

Just been for another great roast at The Alexandra Hotel. The lamb was cooked perfectly and fell of the bone, as was the beef. The kids had chicken which we have had before and is always really good. Great range of tasty veg and crispy roast potatoes with their amazing stuffing topped off with rich thick gravy. Best roast in the city, we will be back!!

Every Sunday, I am same as most people in the UK. I search for a great roast dinner, that search is now over!! After seeing a photo of a friends roast from The Alex Pub, it looked great. That was 6 weeks and 6 roast dinners later. I can confirm, the roast dinner there is best i’v had. Maybe I’ll see you in there 🍴

Me and the other half have been ranking our Roasts in and around Southampton since I moved here a year(ish) ago and I have to say this one surprised us..... we went quite late for Sunday lunch (5ish - so it was quiet) but the food was beautiful, the lamb fell off the bone along with the short rib. Plenty of veg + gravy. Service was great as always and the chef even came out to say hey, which is always a nice touch as I find it means they care about the food they are serving and aren’t just a ‘cook’. This is my new number 1 for roasts in Southampton and it’s where me and my other half met 4 years ago so we will 100% be going more regularly as it’s a special place for us.

It was nice enough and bar staff OK but had problems getting beer that we wanted due to faulty pumps.

Had a work pub quiz here, really great evening, well organised by Ross. Food is always good, proper pub grub, and they were very accommodating generally. Will definitely be going back soon.

Used to be a good pub, now run badly. No beer, and spirits selection was very poor for the prices. Good gig though

Pumps not working so no draft beer, no house spirits. Only option was over priced bottles. Barman was arrogant, stood without a drink for 20 mins and left for a bar with beer. One star because -10 is not an option.

Love this place staff are so friendly, they have bands in, good prices great food. Perfect. Great night out for groups, couples or alone. Perfect would recommend to everyone.

The Alexandra has a lot to offer, ranging from weekly music events and a great food menu for lunch, dinner and Sunday roasts! Prices are reasonable too and it has a great atmosphere! They also have drinks promos. There is also a pool table and dart board if you fancy a social one with friends.

Not very went for lunch with a group of work colleagues and it turned out to be a takeaway. It was such a nice place back in the day....

Real ale horrible place could do with redecorating

Really good Sunday roast. I decided to pop over on impulse after seeing a post on Facebook & I wasn't dissapointed. Received a warm friendly welcome & ordered the beef short rib. It was tender & juicy, lovely crispy roast potatoes, great cauliflower cheese, roast carrot, red cabbage & unctuous beef gravy. The yorkshire pud was good too. Really enjoyed it. The pub itself is a no frills old town pub, however don't let this put you off, the food is great & chef knows what he is doing. The only downside on my visit was it was very quiet & the place felt cold, but it was end of service & I guess had been busy earlier. Overall though, great food & friendly staff. Thanks 👍

Really confused what this drinking house is trying to be now. Been through so many owners now.

Me and my son (10 years old) went for dinner, the staff are amazing and made us all feel important... The open fire was stunning and made the place feel so cozy, lots of games that my son loves playing, proper family friendly pub. The roast dinner was out of this world... the beef melted in your mouth and was the best I've had in a longtime... beats any competition in the area definitely be back there and was worth every penny. My son didnt want to leave... Thank you to all at the Alex and see you again soon.

I went here for St Paddy's day recently. I used to go here regularly while I was at Uni. It used to be Film and game themed and had a lot of charm to it. There were retro games you could play, film posters and memoribilia around the pub, and Star Wars and Game of Thrones themed cocktails. It was really something unique and special. Now it's just sort of a standard pub like many others you see around Southampton. Drinks are reasonable priced and staff are lively but the uniqueness and charm are gone.

Seems to have new management, they've removed a lot of the things that made it interesting. Went in early on a friday night and they had run out off all beer, only lager available.

Beer emporium? Last Saturday night only two of the four pumps were working. On returning to the bar for a second round my part and I were told all four real ales were sold out. A beer emporium with no beer! There's a song in that if I am not mistaken.

The staff were incredibly friendly and the general atmosphere was brilliant. Thank you for a lovely afternoon of gin.

Decent pub, Average Southampton prices with a wide range of beers and ales available on draught. Good selection of spirits and cocktails available as well. Evening entertainment in the form of local bands. and nice open space beer garden. Would definitely recommend!

Beer Emporium!!! Went ghere at 7.40pm and they didn't have ANY actual real ale (beer) because of the Saints home game! Unbelievable!

Holy moly those jam night are sexy, one of the best places i have been to.

to bright, for live bands, no atmosphere, beers kept running out. has a garden. couple of good looking bar staff. oh and tables at the front outside. could be improved on.

Good music venue. Beer is ok but they did have some great retro game consoles and games Nintendo64 amongst them worth a visit just for that.

Decent pub, good beer and pretty fast service. Bizarre entrance (it has a porch ,i don't think it would be easy for a wheelchair user) The toilets really let this place down,, graffiti on the walls everywhere,had to try 3 taps to find a working one and the decades old hand dryer had given up the ghost.

Friendly staff. It used to be a great pub but they sloppily white washed over all the character it once had and left it feeling charmless. The generic Guinness prints and decorations definitely don't help.

Open mic is good fun on Tuesdays
