The Alex in Suffolk Coastal

We have had a meal there today we had catch of the day and must say the best fish and chips I have had staff very helpful very full so had to wait for meal well worth the wait 5 out of 5 will use again

Great menu, service and table - thank you for a great lunch with my mother and kids. I was also pleasantly surprised to get a booking on the Friday before.

The staff are generally great at the Alex, but the food, even basic stuff like a bowl of chips, can be very variable. We used to love going there for the nachos, but even these have changed from the best I’ve ever had, to the worst. It’s basically just a bag of nachos tipped on a plate, with hardly any cheese and even harder to find pulled pork. It really isn’t good enough for what they charge. We’ll continue to go for drinks but will go elsewhere for food.

Spent a lovely Saturday evening having drinks with family, went back Sunday morning for a great breakfast I think really good value for money lots of choice , great view of the sea , will definitely go back .

Arrived and got a table straightaway. Got drinks and ordered food from bar. People came and went. Waited half an hour and then noticed people who arrived after us were being brought their food. Went up to bar to enquire. Order had been laid to one side and been forgotten. Waitress said they could provide our order in 15 minutes. We decided to cut our losses and leave as we didn't believe we would be served our food in that period. Refund given. Very very disappointing after previous visits. Won't return as there are other places in Felixstowe with better service.

Whilst the decor bears a similarity with aspects of some Wetherspoons, the overall experience was a disappointment. The menu is very limited and very much focused on an all day basic breakfast theme, but the prices are considerably higher than the big W chain. Furthermore despite the staff running around constantly, the service is very, very, slow sadly.

The Alex is well positioned and immaculately clean and serves a very good range of drinks, both hot and cold and a neat range of bites and snacks. The service was good, the staff friendly and the loos were sparkling - 10/10 guys!

Poor service, slow and rude, we asked for the table to be cleaned , waitress with glasses huffed and puffed, poor quality food just dumped on a plate

Attended a private buffet function. food was AA+ the bar staff were very helpful a nd provide excellent service all evening

Good position on the sea front with lovely view. Unfortunately the brunch we had was horrible. The home cooked fries were more like a potato hash. Meant to be crispy but were soggy and greasy. My fried eggs were hard and rubbery and the chipolatas were over cooked. There was a swathe of thick bbq/chipotle sauce smothering half the plate. The strong flavour completely overwhelmed the flavour of everything. This dish was an expensive disaster! I sent mine back and got a refund although my husband gamely struggled through his, although he gave up on the potatoes. We’ve eaten at the Alex many times before but this was without doubt the worst meal we’ve ever had there. Unlikely to go back!

What a disappointment. We took our family for a breakfast treat that turned out not to be great. The home cooked fries that I expected to be like sautéed potato were terrible. I don’t know how they under cooked the centre while making the outside greasy and soggy. The chipolstas were ok but the bacon was just cheap, thin slices. Overall a very expensive poor breakfast

For some time, I have visited The Alex for a coffee only, but, the other day, my wife and I dropped in for lunch. We quickly realised that food at The Alex is as good as the coffee. The Alex is on the seafront. Plenty of space indoors but some nice tables outside as well where diners can enjoy both the view and Felixstowe's famous bracing air. The menu at this restaurant is neither long nor particularly innovative. My chicken dish was, however, very well cooked. Furthermore, it was served professionally and with good humour. Perhaps the staff are the best aspect of this venue.

Great location, curb appeal isn’t great but much better vibe inside. Food was really good, decent quality and decent amount. The only downside were the cocktails but they were still average.

Always good food, great location and atmosphere. Unfortunately lost a couple of stars and tip, clearing the table while people are still chewing there last mouthful of food. It wasn't busy so there was no real excuse for that.

Went here to eat for the first time in a long time and standards have dropped considerably. The chips were completely overcooked and dry, the bacon in my wrap was hard and leather like. The best thing was my coke! Would only go here for drinks and NOT food.

Coffee is nice and service good, however they do not keep a cash float in the till. I was told I could pay Cash but wouldn't get any change. Disgraceful.

Its a shame that the Brasserie has closed down and they only now have the cafe bar open for food, the menu is ok but it definitely needs the change more often needs more selection. Fish and chips are always great but needs more main meals rather than 6 or 7 and the old specials.

Having been a regular visitor to the Alex for the last 20 odd years I have always enjoyed the friendly service and good food here .However on our visit last night I found the food to be unexpectedly poor and very overpriced . I think the prices have been raised to cut losses on the Winter Sale 50% off period .However this offer has finished and the price of the food is too high now ..For example a single baguette with a few cuts of bavette steak , a tiny amount of rocket and a slaw , priced at £15.95 ..This was a £8.95 -£9.95 meal at most ..Come on Tim and Julie you need to examine your price structure before the footfall declines .

Stopped off after a long run for re fuelling. Place was busy, but as normal the staff were welcoming and the tables were clean. Drinks spot on (latte), food disappointing in the fact that there is virtually no vegan offerings (need to have at least a couple folks). But services was good, please was clean and staff are lovely. So whilst I scored 3 out of five, its more like a 3.5 and if in future they off more vegan offerings, I'm sure it can go to a 4 or maybe a 5!

Poached eggs on muffin equals poached eggs on compressed very thin bun Weirdly one shot of coffee in latte ( therefore weak) but two in a cappuccino ….. ?!

Came to Felixstowe for a day out with my young nephews and family we stoped at the chip shop opposite the pier for chips then when to the Alex to get drinks sat both nephews down outside so they could eat ordered drinks and as the drinks were put on the bar the manager sent us away and told us to leave because my two little nephews were eating chips, we left our drinks and left NOT FAMILY FRIENDLY ATALL and very rude

The staff were good and the food was pub type fare. The menu was limited but they did offer dishes other than fry ups. Like many restaurants they are sufferring from the challengers of recruiting staff but the wait for food was reasonable.

Came here for brunch the other day. Very good CV19 precautions, can’t fault that. However, I ordered eggs benedict, which is meant to be a toasted muffing, with ham, a poached egg and Hollandaise sauce on top of the muffin. And of course the hot sauce on top should keep everything else warm. All 3 layered on each muffin side. Instead, it came with 2 eggs on one side, a measly portion of ham on the other and a measly portion of sauce on the side. Had to rearrange so that I had the egg sitting on the ham on the muffin and scrape the sauce. Actually asked for more sauce and was lucky, was given an extra couple of teaspoons... everything was cold. Service wasn’t brilliant, had to keep asking for sugar etc ... overpriced for the quality. Would do better to serve a decent portion size and stop trying to make it look cheffy...

We visited The Alex yesterday for the first time in a while. Firstly, on a positive, the staff were all very pleasant (despite clearly being very busy). I was surprised that the menu has no markings of Vegetarian/Vegan or Gluten free options. It’s says to ask if you have a question about the ingredients etc but why not just add it to the menu! My partner and I both had an open sandwich, neither of which we particularly enjoyed. The chips my granddaughter had were a mix of undercooked and overcooked! All in all it was very disappointing and we won’t be in a hurry to return!

I was staying at a local hotel and stopped in here due to its location on the front when having a stroll. The coffee was not good, seemed like not very good filter coffee. When I went to sit inside on my next visit the service was brusque to the point that I decided not to stay. The Alex has a great location but I wouldn't recommend it as a place to feel welcomed.

Alex has gone down hill.After waiting months for the Alex to reopen I was excited when when wife and I pulled up Friday morning 4 September for a much missed full breakfast and pot of tea.The staff were really friendly and helpful and our order taken.I was very disappointed with the change to the full breakfast. Sausages have gone and received 2 small chipolatas, one large mushroom instead of numerous small ones and small vine tomatoes. I was it impressed at all and gone was the HP sauce and in with some brown paste in a very small dish Not the experience I had waited 5 months for and frankly after coming for a few years every Sunday morning not one I will come back for. My wife did enjoy her bacon and egg with toast but we will now be going elsewhere for our Sunday morning breakfast. I did email and received the following response Good afternoon Paul, Apologies for the late reply. I'm sorry to hear of your disappointment with the full English especially as a regular customer. We have made a few changes to the menu in line with the refurb we carried out. Obviously with such changes to the menu feedback is important. We have used the Alex for years and the food and service has generally been good.Two weeks ago we popped in and I ordered eggs benedict and my wife ordered a bacon sandwich and asked for her coffee to come at the same time as her food.Well I was served two sparrrows eggs with a slice of suffolk ham which would fit inside a matchbox. The sauce which used to be on top of normal sized eggs was now smeared over the plate not enough to even cover the small egg.. It was only just warm so it was replaced with another just warm serving. My wifes £7.25 bacon sandwich consisted of two thin slices of bread, two thin rashes of bacon with a few small tomatoes and some grass. Before the bread used to be thick cut quality bread and filled with bacon for about £4.95 but not any more. Eventually my wifes coffee turned up after having to ask for it. WHY has the quality of this nice place gone down hill.

Went twice first time we were passing and stopped for a drink liked it so went back for a meal .They took our name and number for track and trace and had two lovely meals it was nice to see a menu that was a bit different from the usual fair.We can recommend it staff very good too.

First visit back to The Alex for over a year and probably will wait at least another before returning! Had been our ‘go to’ place in the past if we were wanting to treat ourselves to a good quality breakfast in the sun.Good to see tables well separated and some now on the beach. All staff in visors. Started well with being shown to a sanitised table outside but v disappointed that no track & trace details taken and no QR code on the table to scan ourselves. This should be routine nowBoth had the Eggs Benedict, a firm favourite. Another disappointment. Muffins tasted like Tesco’s value and the ‘Local’ ham from a packet out of Lidl. Poor quality and taste. Where’s your Suffolk providence gone? But to top it all the hollandaise sauce, one of the key elements of the dish, was no more than a smear to the side, two mouthfuls and it was gone!! On the plus side the poached eggs were good, fresh and perfectly cooked with not a hint of vinegar.So sorry Alex it’s back to Honey & Harvey in Woodbridge or Melton. These have become our regular now; more expensive but fantastic quality and portions plus a big ethnical plus with biodegradable plates and cutlery and QR codes on every table!! Sorry you can’t just rely on your sea edge location any more.

My husband and I have brunched here many times on a weekend. We sit outside with our dogs. We were pleased to see it open again today so we got a table outside and were really looking forward to our brunch. Wow! Our meals were tiny, balsamic mushrooms apparently means one small mushroom, scrambled egg with my husbands breakfast probably around a dessert spoon size. Fried eggs over cooked. But worst of all food was tepid at best. I detest food that is not hot! Not offered condiments with our food,had to go and find someone to ask. Not asked if everything was OK at any point, even when our table was cleared. My husband is a non complainer, typical Brit that will pay without saying how awful something was. Come on The Alex, get a grip. Based on our experience with you today I would hesitate to come back!

We have visited The Alex several times . For us, it’s the only place we want to eat when we are here. The staff are so helpful, friendly and provide excellent service. The food is superb, well presented and there’s a good menu choice. I usually have fish and chips, they are so delicious. I am fussy about fish and chips!

Well we were so sad that The Alex didn’t open when the hospitality sector opened up again. However when I had an email to inform me of the re-opening date I was thrilled. We visited on Friday lunchtime, they have worked out a great system and clearly time and thought has gone into the re-opening. There are now fewer tables on the patio and a great move (in my opinion) to now make this non-smoking. They have also added tables across the road on the grassy area. We sat inside as outside areas all full. Tables well spaced out and cleaning was done at all times. Staff wear a mask/visor not something that particularly bothers me but great they again have thought through everything. We had a coffee whilst looking through the new menu which has so many delicious options it was impossible to choose! I opted for a brunch style potato hash, eggs, mushroom. Oh my gosh it was absolutely scrummy!!! A perfect light bite and definitely hit the spot. The sausage bap my husband had also looked yummy and the quality of ingredients is clear to see. All in all an absolutely great experience and we can’t wait to return.

We ate here on their first day of reopening and you would never have known. As they were very on the bill with social distancing track and trace recording.

Wonderful to see the Alex open again and up and running. They have changed the menu, which caught me out a bit, but when I ordered our lunch we were not disappointed. The food was even better than I remember and the service friendly and helpful.

We often visit the Alex Brasserie as we live in Felixstowe. We are always impressed by the consistently good food and service. Over 6 years I cannot recall a disappointing experience. We often bring friends here as we know it’ll be reliably delicious! The menu is regularly changed and offers a decent variety of options. The staff are always delightful, friendly and knowledgeable. The quality of the food and cooking is to a very good standard. The Alex will continue to be ‘our local’ but for food too rather than just a glass of wine!

Came across this lovely bar sat 24th March whilst staying at Felixstowe for the night with my other half. Great bar great atmosphere. Didn't eat unfortunately but will do nxt time as food looks lovely. Great staff always on the go quick service. Be lovely when it's warmer. Defintley visit again

I was on a business trip in Felixstowe and myself and a colleague visited the Alex as rated well on TripAdvisor. I was so so disappointed; working in hospitality myself and seeing the location and nicely designed interior I was expecting a nice evening. Instead I was met with miserable bar servers. The one named Abbey was the worst never saw her even crack a smile, no please or thank you in payment and chatting to (I assume) regular customers through serving me. There was also a Brunette girl with tattoos whose name I did not catch who was also completely miserable. They appeared like they were really busy rushing customers away from the bar on what was an average Friday night. One can only assume how they cope in Summer based on the location with these miserable unhelpful staff. Unfortunately I would not be visit again given the chance.

Stopped here for a bite and chose to sit outside as it was a nice day! Ordered the beef burger and a side salad, the burger pattie was very poor in quality and was tough and also lacked flavour. The quality of the meat reminded of a cheap burger van which is not what you expect from a bistro. They need to desperately chnage their burger supplier.Had eggs Benedict here before which was great though.

If you have a dairy intolerance breakfast is best avoided. There was nothing that was served without dairy on the menu. I went for a full English but asked for a fried egg rather than scrabbled eggs to avoid butter. Then had to pay extra for a portion of beans as they are not part of the breakfast (beans with breakfast is must for me!). The menu said served with toast not buttered toast I saw other people’s breakfast had toast ready buttered so informed a waitress that I needed to have toast without butter due to an intolerance she said she would let the kitchen know. Another waitress came over to confirm this. ........and the punchline is my toast came out buttered! It is a good job dairy does not cause me to have anaphylactic shock. The restaurant needs to be more up front on their menus and take intolerance and allergies seriously. I feel £14 for an average breakfast a bit expensive when you can’t get the basics right.

First time visit to Felixstowe other than to get the continental ferry. Stayed at the nearby Premier Inn.Booked The Alex Brasserie for a romantic meal with SJ.Pleasantly greeted by front of house manager who showed us to our table.Even though our booking was for early evening the restaurant was quite busy.Our delightful waitress, Jess, warmly welcomed us and made us feel relaxed as she chatted about the menus. I should point at this that SJ has certain dietary intolerances and finds it challenging to find menus that cater for her needs. Jess was aware of the various problems that allergies and intolerance can present to patrons.Anything that she was unsure about was quickly and cheerfully resolved by checking with the chefs.The meal was very enjoyable and although it was getting very busy we never felt hurried or pressured at any time.Will definitely recommend and revisit if we return to Felixstowe or nearby.Thank you once again to all staff especially Jess who was pleasant and smiley all night even though her feet must have been aching!!!

We had been given a gift card and opted for the upstairs Brasserie and despite not booking were given the last table adjacent to the windows with sea views. Promptly provided with menus and asked if we wanted any drinks, and when brought were able to order the first of a 2 course meal as we opted for a main and dessert. Not too long to wait and the food was beautifully presented and all ingredients were lovely and hot. The desserts were also first class and though we declined coffee to finish we both thoroughly enjoyed our visit.

An extremely disappointing meal from a bar/restaurant that used to serve half-decent grub. Mum paid 8-odd quid for a veggie burger that looked like something you'd purchase from the side of a van... flaccid lettuce and old tomato, served in a dry hard bun. No sides. My hoisin duck wrap was truly remarkable... in that it contained bugger all duck. Nearly 10 quid for the pleasure. Guess You were paying for the Oriental side 'salad', which consisted of four bits of thinly sliced pepper and a pinch of lettuce, drowned in soy sauce. And because we're suckers for punishment, we topped off proceedings with soggy nachos, drowning a melted plasticcy processed cheese. A truly disappointing meal. Come on Alex, you can do better.

Most weekends we head to the seafront at Felixstow and take our dog for a walk and swim. We always stop off at the Alex for breakfast. It is a friendly cafe with great food. Great service and great staff.

I had reserved a table at the Alex for my husband and myself for New Year’s Day. This restaurant is one of our favourites. We also like Bencottos which is also excellent. The staff are always very pleasant and the atmosphere here is very relaxing. We selected the Roast lamb and Roast beef dishes. They were both so tender and delicious. We usually visit on a Saturday with friends, therefore we had never experienced the Roasts. We’ll be back on a Sunday. Thank you to the Alex for a fabulous meal.

We have been here twice, once on a Friday and one midweek. The staff are very attentive, we’ve not tried the food yet but we will be back. Well worth a visit.
