The Admiral St David in Cardiff

We happened upon Tir a Mor on a random restaurant site looking for a place that would take a reservation on a Friday night. We were surprised to find it was in a hotel when we arrived. But we were thrilled with the result! The Tir a Mor staff was amazing (I wish I got names). They were friendly and helpful and really made for an enjoyable and delicious dining experience! The space is nice and the food was great. A very pleasant surprise and a recommended spot for a nice meal by the water in Cardiff.

Such a lovely Christmas afternoon tea with friends. We were served by Cerri who was amazing. Very attentive chatty and overall very friendly. It's a shame her shift ended half way through our afternoon tea. As once she left the service was quite poor. Hi five to Cerri 😊

Honestly the restaurant is 5/5, food is amazing, ambience is great and our waitress Bryony was an absolute delight. Her polite and friendly service was genuinely 10/10 and added so much to our experience. The staff in general were absolute status, can't rate them enough!!!

We arrived for afternoon tea in November 2023. The tea selection came out in a wooden box which contained flavoured tea bags ie peppermint, green tea, earl grey and breakfast teabags. We opted for Breakfast Tea. There was one teabag in each pot, when we asked for more tea they just topped it up with hot water, no additional tea bag! It tasted disgusting. We received 4 thin fingered sandwiches and three small cakes plus two welsh cakes and two scones each. It might be a five star hotel but it was definitely not a five star afternoon tea. It costs £34.00 which is not cheap. We will definitely never go back again.

We dined here last Thursday night when we stayed at the hotel. The food was fine and delicious and we were well looked after by the staff. Unfortunately, we could not use our gift voucher against the pre-theatre meal as it was already discounted. We chose the pre-theatre menu because of the portion size.

I tried to book afternoon tea in the restaurant , I did receive a question back regarding my booking which I responded to , but then heard nothing , by searching the website I found 3 different phone numbers none of which were answering , having called these numbers at least 10 times each I gave up and made other arrangements, This is not what I expected of a five star hotel ...

We went for an afternoon tea at the restaurant after a spa day. We were looked after by Rose, Kerry, Brandon and Tom, all of whom were beyond lovely and catered for us so well! 10/10 recommend, excellent service and nothing was too much trouble for them. You instantly felt at ease and that they were there to make sure you had a good time. Service is so so important to making a place worth a visit and these guys were brilliant.

Recently stayed at St David’s VOC.. stayed here many times and the restaurant was always one of the highlights on our visit. The food and the ambiance was always second to non .. but this time the place reminded me of a school canteen, and the food wasn’t brilliant. The restaurant has a very different menu and the food was amateur and nothing like the quality we’ve experienced in the past. One tasty item was the Welsh Egg .. tasty but chorizo sausage’s connection with Wales is lost on me. Will always stay at St David’s but probably won’t dine in the restaurant..

My husband and I used our 25th wedding anniversary vouchers here (3 course meal and cocktails for two) Service was spot on and the views overlooking the bay was incredible. The food was pleasant enough but we did order from the main menu as the ‘3 course set menu’ with our voucher was very limited. Unfortunately there was no fish cake starters. Sirloin steak and burger mains were ok but nothing special I’m afraid. Our bill arrived without the voucher allowance taken off and then as we asked for our cocktails at the bar we were met with ‘we don’t do this type of voucher’ ! The paperwork had been handed in on our arrival so we explained this and urged the bar attender to check. The whole experience just felt awkward and left us feeling disappointed and ‘unwelcomed’.

Delicious food, great service, atmosphere was amazing, a table overlooking the bay. We were visiting Cardiff for our anniversary and stayed in the St David’s hotel where this restaurant is located. I generally like to venture out for dinner but I’m glad we didn’t! The food was incredibly tasty and cocktails were great. It just made the entire evening!

The dinner was delicious and the restaurant never disappoints! Sixtieth birthday lunch. The service is spot on. Great location. Great views. The food tho’? Not good at all. At this price point I expect perfection! My “pie” was cold 🤢 and promptly given a hot one but nothing reflected in the bill. Very very expensive. Very average food I’m afraid.

Had a wonderful lunch on Easter Sunday after a relaxed spa treatment. Was greeted by a friendly host and sat by the window to admire the view. Had a very delicious 3 course meal. Served by a splendid and fun waiter called Massimiliano who went out of his way to entertain and ensure excellent service during my meal. He really brought out the warmth and fun of the restaurant.

Not the admiral anymore! It was the worst experience in a restaurant for a long time. We couldn't sit at our reserved table till all people were present then proceeded to wait till we could then be seated for 20 mins. It was old around the water, they filled up our glasses once. My sister in law ordered oysters and asked if the shallots were on the side they weren't, she wasn't happy, especially as they are £6 each! Crazy there getting 200% mark up on them. Then we waited 1 1/2 hour before our mains. Food was great but service is terrible Literally such a waste. Then when the bill came we weren't prepared to pay the £24 service charge as there was no service and got the dirtiest look. The best part is it's not even under staffed, just lazy people. As someone stated below don't go if you value time. For two courses we wasted 3 hours there!

I love this hotel and the staff are very friendly and accommodating but I feel that some of the food is overpriced. I'm happy to pay more for extravagent dishes but some of the evening meals here don't seem to reflect the price in presentation and quality. I will always come back for the lovely rooms, views, breakfast and spa but I feel the evening menu either needs some more passion and variety or a lower price tag.

Went as part of a birthday present received by a family member for afternoon tea.

On arrival we were greeted by a very smiley and helpful receptionist. When arriving in our junior suite We found this a pleasant room until we had problems with the sound on tv and the mini bar not working which resulted in waiting for this to be fixed. When having food at the main restaurant we were only offered the main menu to be told they had not hardly anything available I.e fillet steak and to top off they had a bar menu which was never offered!!! The waiter service was absolutely shocking and they clearly could not bothered. Only one person restored my faith and his name was Brandon what a breath of fresh air and he was totally fantastic!!! The rest of the staff I would never employ absolutely shocking they definitely need some training on service skills. For what is supposed to be our 1st anniversary I was very disappointed I will only be returning to the one and only Vale of Glamorgan hotel. This hotel was not a five star hotel!!! Would never recommend this to anybody I have travelled all around the world and this hotel is shocking!! Think twice!!

Visited st David’s Spa for the first time thanks to a birthday present which included 3 spa treatments and afternoon tea. The spa treatments were second to none, absolutely amazing. However the afternoon tea which followed was shockingly bad and tainted what had been up to that point a wonderful experience. Service was slow, sandwich bread was starting to go hard when eventually served, no jam with the scones and some awfully cheap tasting cakes, disappointing considering it certainly wasn’t cheap to purchase! It looked poor and tasted poor, a really shame as I had high expectations! Not to let it ruin an otherwise fantastic day, but mindful I will never consider afternoon tea here again, complete rip off

Had an amazing time here with my parents and boyfriend. Food was delicious, flavourful and piping hot - we all picked things we normally wouldn’t have, and we were not disappointed. There was also live music when we were eating which was a delight (I think it was the girls first day on the job- she was fab!!) Would definitely recommend and go again!

Who from the ratings board gave this a 5 star. He needs shooting as he definitely did not go to the restaurant! I ate here and the food quality was good but the menu offered was only a set menu. Very little choice.

Visited here on Saturday with family for a drink on the terrace as we had relatives staying here. We managed to bag a sofa, table and some chairs on the terrace overlooking the water. Unfortunately the sofa didn't have any cushions on the bottom which made it quite uncomfortable but there was nowhere else to go.

I loved the ambiance, the menu and the quality of service. The food was great. It did take quite a lot of time to arrive after the order was placed, but it was worth it.

Had 2 course meal included in the spa package. Fab choice to choose from and it was delicious. There was about 6/7 in each course to choose from. Love the location overlooking the bay/sea. Staff were lovely and even though it was busy they had time for us. All 3 of us really enjoyed our food and drinks and nice gap between courses and didn’t feel rushed. Would definitely recommend and will be going again to try the full menu.

We were attending a wedding in the hotel. I realise it was the bride and grooms choice of food, but the food was cold. Pizza looked as though it had been left for hours, the pulled pork was dry and tasteless. To cap it all the high chair, had left over food on this had not been cleaned, the floor underneath the chair was messy with left over food, I believe there again have been a birthday party here previously, but not able to confirm. on telling one of the staff she eventually sauntered in and wiped the chair with a dry blue cloth, not wipes just paper towelling, no apology. As soon as the wedding service had finished, the staff could not remove the wedding chairs quick enough. Being a so called 5 star hotel, this should have reflected the rating, but it did not,

We enjoyed a 3 course dinner as part of a dinner bed and breakfast deal for my partner's birthday. The menu is Asian inspired which was a nice surprise. Food was delicious and service was fabulous for both dinner and breakfast! Thank you for a special stay. Would highly recommend and love the new decor.

The Admiral restaurant inside Voco hotel has a nice vibe and feel about it.

We chose the Admiral for afternoon tea to celebrate my Mum's 80th birthday. There was a large party of us and it appealed to us to have various different options for the type of afternoon tea we each wanted. We were not disappointed. From start to finish the tea met our expectations. The service was good and the food was excellent - in particular the scones which were the best we have ever had. A big thank you to Amy the events coordinator for sorting this all out for us.

I wanted a special evening for my wife's birthday. The Admiral Restaurant at the Start David's Hotel was an excellent choice. Following gin and tonics at the bar, we were shown to our table in the restaurant. We chose from the Date Night Sharing Platter menu. This includes a bottle of prosecco. We chose surf n turf for starters, sea bass in banana leaves for mains and cheese and biscuits for desert. The food and service were fantastic. To top the evening, we took our coffee into the bar to listen to the live music. The Date Night menu is £40 pp. For the quality and amount of food with wine included, this was excellent value. Thoroughly recommended for that special occasion.

We booked the Admiral to celebrate our anniversary, after hearing good reviews and planning to visit for some time. The food is a little price-y however worth splashing out on for the quality. The lamb shank was tender and fell off the bone, and the apple crumble with a twist was a definite surprise. The service we received from the staff was great, our waitress Courtney was friendly and personable, and we were given a complimentary glass of bubbly as it was a special occasion. Some notes to make are that the menu was heavily Asian inspired - which was great for me but may not be to everybody's taste, and while the dessert was quirky, I would have probably preferred the simple traditional version!

I took my mother in law for a Sunday lunch at The Admiral on 17 Feb 19. It was all very pleasant - the doorman kindly took the car away to park it so that I could look after my guest. We had a lovely table with a view over Cardiff Bay. The waitress was good and helpful and we had ordered our food and drinks in no time. I enjoyed pulled duck as a starter - it was nicely served on chicory. For my main course, I had the hake which was very good. My guest had the Welsh beef which was excellent. I had a carafe of white wine and the bill came to £59 which was very good value for the quality of the food. The service could have been slicker but they were rather busy.

Attended lunch for a special family occasssion. Upon looking at the hotel it looks quite grubby externally to the balconies and features, quite poor for such a prestigious venue. Internally was much better and as expected. The staff were friendly and approachable but service was painfully delayed throughout. The resurante didn’t seem overly busy so that shouldn’t have played a part. Bread took 20mins to serve. When the pate arrived it looked like it had been stood in the kitchen for a few hours. The beef roast dinner looked like it had been plated from a distance. The overall appearance of any of the plates were not what I would have expected. To finish a floater coffee took over 20mins to serve again. The arrival of the coffee was accompanied with an apology as they needed to train someone up to make it. The coffee was served in a red wine glass, half coffee and half cream. Unsure why the need to serve in a wine glass with so much cream. I have a sweet tooth but was unable to stomach 3 or 4 mouthfuls of pure cream before tasting the coffee. The staff accepted the silliness of the serving method and removed from the bill as requested. Overall not a bad experience but far from that expected of such a venue. I had previously been pondering a Spa stay with my wife. Quite lacklustre and can’t say I will be in any hurry to return.

We stayed at st davids and decided to eat at the hotel. The menu choices were not very inspiring to be honest. Our starters of scallops and the other tuna were good. The main courses just very average and both deserts well below average. 3 courses and a half bottle of wine coming to over £100 was expensive for the choice and quality. The plus points are the service, the decor and the excellent views.

I have eaten in the Admiral before to meet my Godmother before wedding as a treat and decided to dine here again during a stay for our anniversary meal.

Me and my girlfriend stayed at the hotel and decided to visit the restaurant for a late lunch and were not disappointed. The vegetarian options were flavoursome and delicious, would recommend the tempura vegetables and Kerlan curry. Bar man and waiter were both extremely friendly, accomodating and attentive. Would highly recommend.

Xmas Lunch Was Stunning, Great View Of The Bay. Service Was Outstanding (Kelly) & Fair Value For Money. I couldn’t fault any part of the experience. I would go again and recommend to others. First Class.

We had a really enjoyable festive lunch yesterday thanks in the main to the lovely waiting staff, particularly Kayleigh, who did an excellent job of looking after us. The food was delicious and well presented, so thanks to the chefs. The restaurant has a lovely atmosphere and the Christmas décor is very refined. The only thing that was missing were some Christmas crackers but luckily we brought our own individually designed Christmas hats to get into the festive mood! Second time here, this time with a family of 6 for my partner's bday. Exceptional food and service once again for some very picky eaters. Everyone simply loved their food. We had 3 courses, great wine selection and each course was a treat for the senses. A thoroughly good night, would definitely recommend.

First time staying in this hotel as it was my birthday was a special weekend. For what we paid in wasn't massively impressed with the hotel. Our heating wasn't working on the first night so nearly froze to death it was sorted the next evening although still not warm. We also found that the spa was very cold and we couldn't use it until. 5pm in the evening and it was then occupied by children until 7pm! So you have to use the spa quite late at night if you want no kids.

We had a meal from the pre theatre menu, which was good value, two courses and a drink for £19.95. We had the satay chicken to start with a mildly spicy peanut sauce, and burnt lime (this was a great accompaniment), and I had the char siu pork which was delicious. We have previously had the chicken laksa which is their top selling meal I was told, and that was great too. However my husband who doesn't like spicy things struggled to find anything on the menu (on the pre theatre menu there was fish and chips as the only non spicy meal) so asked to have a salad, which they were happy to swop. I really enjoyed my food, the service was good and we will definitely return but may have a different menu with more non spicy choices, unless they add some to the pre theatre menu for people like my husband!

I had lunch there twice recently (last Friday and Sunday). Both times I was left standing around waiting to be seated while the staff skilfully avoided eye contact. Apparently each staff member is now a host too, and they’ve done away with a ‘point’ person to greet and seat guests on arrival. This way of greeting guests only works if someone actually pays attention and spots guests loitering uncomfortably waiting to be noticed. Our server was really grouchy. The food was good, it’s always good but I won’t come back again. I just felt like a hindrance. It’s not cheap and when I go to St. David’s I expect a great all-round experience, which is sadly lacking since the rebrand.

We were there for two different occasions, one for lunch, the other for dinner.

It was my first time eating here since the refurbishment and it’s so much better. The menu is great and surprisingly very reasonably priced. On our waiters recommendation I had the chicken satay and the chicken laksa. Both were really good and full of flavour. I have to make a special mention of our waiter, Andy who was superb. Great service and very knowledgeable about the menu. It was a lovely afternoon out
