The Admiral in Sheffield

When you walk in and the minute you get to the counter you're only met with a 'We've got to wrap thirty bags of chips'. No 'hello', no customer service. Whether you are busy or not, you need to acknowledge your customers and not make us feel unwelcome or like we are an inconvenience just by entering the shop. Will spend my money elsewhere. Speechless.

Been a few times, pretty good to be honest

Best haddock and chips around. You always have to wait a few minutes but it's worth it. Friendly and a typical price for these days. This place also has some good offers. Especially good for one person.

Should be called THE SADMIRAL!!! Utterly vile, these people have an absolutely disgusting and disgraceful attitude to customer service! Probably the worst I have ever experienced at any chippy, anywhere at any time. (And I’ve been to a lot of chippies in my 60 years on this planet). And there’s no point the owner or manager coming on here to defend the absolutely indefensible - he emerged from the back just as his ‘team’ were telling me to “go somewhere else if you don’t like it”. In fact, he didn’t even raise a millimetre of an eyebrow when two of his staff thought it was OK to behave like complete POS towards me. He is obviously used to it and clearly couldn’t care less as long as the money keeps rolling in. If you want the full story, head over to my October 2023 review by ‘Shaun’ on Trip Advisor. ( I tried to repost it here, but it’s quite long with too many words for Google reviews to accept.) In the meantime, if you are contemplating spending your hard-earned here - DON’T!!! Not only is the so-called ‘customer service’ beyond reprehensible but the chips were lukewarm, stale, greasy and, at £2.80 you get a minimal portion that’s exceptionally poor value for money/a rip-off. Since I have sworn never to set foot in this place again - and advised my many friends and family in and around the Crookes area to do the same - I have discovered a much, much better chippy just a hundred yards or so further down the road. It’s called Five Star Fish & Chips. The people who run it are lovely, the service is great and so is the food. Highly recommended and so much better than the SADmiral - which used to be good but has clearly gone severely downhill in recent times. *Updated response to owner’s comments below. 09/11/23 Hi James, your attempted ‘defence’ is not only laughable but also pretty insulting - but what more (or less) could I honestly expect from a place where the kind of behaviour I experienced is tolerated if not condoned? On the one hand you say you are sorry to hear about my “awful experience” and then, on the other, you say (presumably referring to me) you “don’t accept any aggression or hostility” towards your staff. Surely both of these statements can’t be true at the same time? Or perhaps in your world, two such massively conflicting and contrasting assertions can indeed be reconciled into one coherent reality? As we and your staff know, I didn’t raise my voice or behave in an aggressive or hostile manner at any time. Indeed, I even said - although maybe with a slight hint of sarcasm - “thank you” as I left. The fact that you want to portray this situation as a big, bullying, angry old ogre shouting at a poor, defenceless sixteen year old girl who is just trying to get some pocket money together is not only a severe case of attempted ‘gaslighting’ of me but also your customers who may read this review. If you look again at what I wrote on Trip Advisor, you will see I didn’t say I was bullied but rather I stated that your two employees closed ranks, told lies and were downright rude and insulting - all true and all ingredients in the appallingly poor customer service I received. And why do you refer so emphatically to the girl’s age? I actually do not care if she is 16, 61 or 160 - it is wholly irrelevant to the fact that both she and her colleague were massively insulting to me and I left your shop feeling humiliated by their disgusting behaviour. If you cannot accept this, that is up to you, but I would prefer it if you could just put your hands up and offer me a sincere apology or, even better, an assurance that you will endeavour to ensure your staff - whatever their age or gender - are trained to treat customers with some basic respect. I also asked you not to come on here and defend the indefensible, and yet that is exactly what you have attempted to do. As for your incredibly generous offer of £2.80 worth of chips, presumably as some kind of ‘compensation’, let me get back to you on that. In the meantime, I stand by every word of my original review/s. Thank you.

Excellent chippy staff are great

In the past I worked in the hot food retailing (ie takeaway) business for several years, so I am very familiar with the vagaries and challenges of dealing with a wide variety of customers - including the more ‘difficult’ ones. Because of this, I always try to see things from the server’s point of view and therefore normally take a quite relaxed attitude towards a level of customer service that is not quite up to what might be called the average standard. HOWEVER, in this instance, based on my very unhappy experience this evening, I feel incredibly angry, deeply insulted and compelled to write this ‘review’ of the so-called ‘customer service’ at the Admiral in Crookes. Here is precisely what happened so you can judge for yourself whether to spend your hard-earned money with people who think it is perfectly fine to treat paying customers like I was on this occasion. Passing by this evening, in something of a rush but also gripped by intense hunger, I saw there was only ‘one’ customer waiting in the shop (a couple with their child). This, I reasoned, would be a good time to get served fairly quickly, satisfy my hunger and proceed onwards to my appointment. How wrong could I be? When I entered the shop, the server - a young woman with dark hair and wearing a black shirt who, as it subsequently became clear, has zero manners or respect but plenty of ‘attitude’ - was just finishing taking the other customer’s order. As it came to over £18, I assumed was a somewhat larger, complex and time-consuming order than mine would be (I literally only wanted one lot of chips open on a tray). Admittedly, I didn’t wait for the magic words “can I take your order please”, but as there were two people apparently ‘serving’ (another young woman was just standing around behind the counter) and only one other customer whose order had only that minute been taken and paid for I (wrongly) thought I would be on safe ground - remember I was in a hurry and very hungry - to just ask for “one lot of chips please”. As I have explained, I (wrongly) thought both young women were serving and, realising my error (which was self-evident from the empty stare I was given) , I was about to say “Sorry I didn’t realise only one of you is serving”. At this exact moment though, the other customer, (whose order had not yet been started on) seeing my apologetic demeanour (rather than interpreting my behaviour as rudeness - which it most definitely was not) and perhaps empathetically sensing both my urgency and hunger, looked at the person serving (and possibly reacting to the icy stare I was being given) and said “it’s fine, serve him first”. I was just about to say “thank you very much, I appreciate it” to the customer when, almost unbelievably, the young woman serving said “oh, it’s fine” and then started what turned out to be the five-minute process of putting together the other customer’s order! Given the customer themselves had already said it was ok for me to be served my one tray of chips - a procedure I estimate would have taken about thirty seconds - I was, to put it mildly, somewhat taken aback. Realising I would now have to wait a few more minutes (and still extremely hungry as I had not eaten all day) I went outside to phone ahead and say I would be a few minutes late for my appointment. I then returned to the shop, by which time three more people had entered and I was now fourth in the queue. At this point I should have perhaps cut my losses and left. But I was still very hungry and also wanted to make the point that what I had experienced was an example of very poor customer service and perhaps they might learn something useful and helpful about good customer service from this episode. When I eventually got served, from the server’s body language I detected an unmistakable (and wholly unjustifiable) air of hostility towards me. After paying for my one lot of chips I asked the young woman, quite reasonably in my opinion, why she had ignored the other customer kindly allowing me to be served first her reply was - and I swear to this - “I was half way through their order and couldn’t just stop serving them to start serving you “. This, as was obvious to both of us, was a massive lie and, quite frankly, insulting to my intelligence and not a good reflection of this young woman’s character or integrity. Then, for no apparent reason, the other young woman behind the counter, thought it sensible to put the icing on the metaphorical cake by chiming in with “you would have been served ten minutes ago If you’d waited your turn like everyone else.” WTAF!!! Seriously???! Now I know some of you reading this will think I am making more of this than I perhaps should, but o found it humiliating and embarrassing to be called out and labelled as, in effect, a would-be ‘queue jumper’ in front of a group of strangers (by now the shop had several other customers present). I then said (referring to the wishes of the customer who had kindly suggested I be served first) “haven’t you heard the saying ‘the customer is always right’?”, astonishingly, the second young woman (in a grey t-shirt ) replied “no they’re not - and if you don’t like it you can go somewhere else!”. There then followed a very passive-aggressive plonking down of my tray of chips on the counter, at which point I said “thank you” and left. Overall, this was a deeply unpleasant experience which left me feeling humiliated, embarrassed and angry. It would be a stretch to describe the two young women’s behaviour as ‘bullying’ but it was certainly a case of the two telling lies, closing ranks and effectively ‘ganging up’ to humiliate and embarrass me in front of a group of strangers. As a result of my horrendous experience I will never set foot in this place again. I will also ask my many friends in the Crookes and surrounding area to go elsewhere for their ‘chippy tea’. I am sure the immediate effect of this boycott will not be noticed in the short-term but I can assure the owners of the Admiral it will ultimately come to many thousands of pounds in lost custom in the years to come. But that, I suppose, is the price you pay for employing rude, lying, disrespectful and insulting half-wits instead of pleasant, well-mannered staff who have at least a minimal understanding of what constitutes good customer service. By the way, this used to be a very good chippy but, the very few on the tray I had for were oily, lukewarm and really quite unpleasant. At £2.80 for about about a large handful, they were also massively overpriced/a rip-off.

Quantity is less comparing with other shops.

Food is ok. Chips sometimes underdone. High turnover of staff. Not overly friendly or efficient. Portion sizes aren't great. Doesn't seem to be open as often as some of the local competition.

Revisited the chip shop a few weeks ago had dried the healthy Option for a few years reverted back to the Friday nothing changed lovely food fish cakes gorgeous John the joiner.

Delicious fish and chips! I'm really fussy, I'm not a massive fan of chips but from here they were yummy! Loved there was no skin on my fish. Fish and batter were very tasty and did I mention the chips? Best fish and chips I've had for a long time. Lovely staff served us too.

Staff too busy talking to listen to what you have ordered. Asked 4 times what I wanted. Offered food that had been ordered but rejected by previous customer because staff member had not listened properly. Manager/owner witnessed but offered no apology. No apology from anybody which is not acceptable. Not the first time I have walked out feeling unhappy with service but am not a complainer but won’t be going back. Poor job Admiral, really disappointed!

The fish and sausage are amazing and the quality is amazing too and I love it so much and they also give lollipops to me this is from Liam N 9 years old

You can not live in England and occasionally not try Fish and Chips. Was passing by this branch of Admiral Fish and Chips , there are a few of them around Sheffield. They had a lunchtime special offer ..Fish, Chips, Mushy peas and a Rissole all for £5.50. More than adequate portion sizes, I couldn't finish all the Chips. Friendly service also.

Brilliant food, good size portions. Brilliant staff. There great fish and chips got my mom through her cancer treatment and it was there we went for brilliant food and staff, Admiral are the best !

Price went up recently but the cod and chips portion size justified it. Nice large cod (not just batter) and tasty generous portion of chips that wasn't too greasy. Very fast service.

Working nearby and was lucky to find this great chippy. Proper chipshop with bargain specials. Made my day. Small fish, chips, peas and sausage for £5. It comes with gravy but I am on a diet so didn't have any.

Yet again..no consistency..the batter on the fish is so greasy & ROCK HARD & the fish was SOO DRY! I stopped getting food from this chippy because of the quality of the cook of the fish but a couple of weeks ago I went back after someone said that the quality was back... WRONG! IT'S EVEN WORSE! Before you even start eating you have to take a couple of sheets of a kitchen roll to press on the fish,to soak up the oil in the batter. This has always been a treat on Saturdays for us ,but no more.. DON'T waste YOUR MONEY! I doubt that the management will take my review seriously because I've reviewed before and absolutely NOTHING has changed. Keep your money in your pockets guys..!!!!

Food is good, but the price rises every few weeks, is getting a bit too much to put up with. It used to be a good value for money but now is looking more like a place taking advantage of a bad situation.

Lunchtime special of mini fish, sausage, and beans, peas, curry or gravy was excellent as usual.

Good portions, decent price and a full belly. Top grub! highly reccomended!

Really nice fresh fish and chips

Normally great - today a large portion of chips looked like a small. I've included photo with a £2 for scale and because that's how much it cost me. Honestly disappointed. Hope it's a one-off because frankly I wouldn't like to imagine they think this a "large" anything. Two stars, one for each pound

We were staying wt another pub in Tideswell for 1 night. That pub wasn’t taking food orders after 7.15, despite us staying there. But this was actually quite fortunate for us as we found The Anchor. A proper local pub which welcomed the not so locals too. We found such a warm welcome from Serena and her team,. Lovely food and drinks too. We had a great evening.

Had some fish and chips from here today and it was excellent. Just how I like them and great value too. Very friendly staff to top it off - well satisfied!

We have been going to Addy’s for over a decade and love it. The prices are reasonable and oil fresh. It’s usually the same person frying so you get consistently good meals. One of 3 I would recommend in the S10/S6 area.

One of the best chippies I've had for years, and I've had a lot. Super crispy fish, none of that greasy vegetable oil type batter you get in the bad ones. Proper Yorkshire style fish n chips served by two lovely fellas. My new go to in sheffield.

Conseguí un eglefino y patatas fritas mientras pasaba por Crookes la otra noche. La tienda no parece muy atractiva, pero la comida fue de lejos la mejor que he probado en Sheffield hasta ahora. Stopped by this place whilst passing through Crookes the other day. Have tried a few other chippies in the area but this is by far the best yet. Great tasting haddock and chips, with crispy, crunchy batter - not the soggy, oily kind. So surprised and pleased to find this place!

Best chippy in Crookes area by a long way. Lovely chips, fresh fish, batter is excellent and crispy without being oily. Peas also nice. Have only been once but very impressed. This tray was £5.50 as well so reasonable price, too.

Probably the most consistent chippy in Sheffield, you know exactly what you're going to get and never had a bad experience. Good chip shop and fair prices. You can't beat the lunchtime special.

He frecuentado el Almirante durante años y siempre he comido bacalao fresco y sabrosas patatas fritas y condimentos. El personal y los propietarios son muy accesibles, cálidos y amables. Hoy hicimos 27 pedidos especiales a la hora del almuerzo y todos fueron proporcionados exactamente según lo ordenado y disfrutado por todos. Hice un par de modificaciones al pedido una hora antes sin ningún problema: nunca hay un trabajo demasiado grande. Para colmo, nos dieron sal y vinagre gratis ya que no estábamos seguros de qué personal quería esto.Cada hora de almuerzo especial es 3. 80 y obtienes una buena porción de papas fritas, una porción pequeña de bacalao y una opción de rissole de pescado / salchichas pequeñas y salsa (guisantes, curry, salsa, frijoles). ¡Increíble relación calidad-precio y nunca decepciona!Muchas gracias

Had fish and curry, led to diarrhoea and made my new car smell of stale fish. My daughters coat in the car even smelled of it. Need a health and safety check asap. On their website others have complained about diarrhoea too. Glad my daughter only had chips.

Nasty service Getting lunchtime special and the lady put mushy peas over the chips. I said if they could be in a carton as my son won't eat them like this. Lady began shouting at me and an angry man came from the back complaining about waste because of my request. Each time I bought these specials they put beans or peas in a carton and now they shouted at me because they decided to pour mushy peas over the chips without asking. We're talking less than £2 worth of chips and peas over a botched order. I have shopped there for more than 20 years but after the threatening behaviour of these people I shall take my business elsewhere. I never got such attitude in McDonald's or any other takeaway. Truly disgusted.

Bought fish & chips for 2 people on Saturday 9th February 2019 - fish and chips were both so greasy, made me and my husband physically sick! Would never recommend this place again!!

I've been going here every Friday (situation depending) for years at this point, it's my personal favourite chip shop in the city and I couldn't imagine going anywhere else. Their chips are always nice as are the scallops, I'm told the fish is also very nice as I don't eat fish myself. Staff are usually friendly, although there are occasionally new faces who take a bit of time to get into the groove, which can lead to confusion with some orders. Other than that, I can't imagine spending my Friday anywhere else.

Disappointed! Popped in a few times, order the usual, 2 large fish, large chips, peas and curry sauce (and a large sausage for the dog) and have always been pleasantly impressed with the portions, friendliness and taste. However last night, I was so disappointed, I will not be returning! The amount of chips we got for a LARGE was laughable The fish was cheap tasting and the batter was soggy And as for the service, this was not great at all! No friendly warm welcome as we usually receive, service was slow and we had to repeat the order at least three times and there was only us in Then as our order was being put together an older gentleman came in to complain about being given two regular sausages instead of battered sausages and they just laughed at the customer and made him feel stupid. NOT IMPRESSED! Lost my business - so many nicer chippy's around

Who knew that fish and chips could be placed on a counter so begrudgingly. Well, it turns out they can when you’re getting in the way of the assistant flirting with her colleagues.I only wanted one large and one small fish and chips. The options on the board being Cod or Medium Cod I didn’t realise that the Cod was actually the large, and the medium the small. Still, the look of derision I received along with the ‘large then’ soon corrected me of my mistake.Incredibly, the scowl I received was soon to be replaced with a flirtatious comment about curry sauce to her colleague. I’ve seldom seen such a rapid change in emotional direction, not since I stole that candy from a baby.All that said, the appalling service on behalf of the individual in question didn’t permeate the paper wrapping, as the fish and chips were excellent and prevented the more generous expunging of bile I was considering.In short: food, excellent; service; not this place’s speciality.

Vino a por un pez grande y una olla de guisantes. Una joven de pelo corto y rubio, aunque parecía cansada y agotada, estaba más que feliz de ayudarme con mi dilema de la cena. I have been having fish and chips from here for more than seven years and I can't speak highly enough of it. It is consistently excellent, delicious chips. My favourite is haddock which is large, beautifully crispy and the white flakes are succulent. I haven't found a better chip shop in Sheffield!

No puede ser molestado con 'cuchicheando y él mismo disfrutando mientras su comida muy lentamente (ojalá me hubiera atrapado por allí ver si llegaron 5 minutos después nos dimos cuenta de que había un orden incorrecto). Al final de la espera, otro chico se acercó a mí y supe que me habían dado la orden equivocado, así que añadió un pescado con patatas fritas y reemplazó la otras nuevas, como los otros hubiera sido fría por el tiempo que me gustaría de volver a casa. Me alegré de que estaba siendo servido por alguien más, como la persona que habían servido anteriormente no tenía idea de lo que estaba haciendo y solicitaron ayuda, tal como se espera de un estudiante de incompetente ahora desde uni. Nunca me dieron una disculpa por el incompetente o la persona que me atendió en el final, y yo todavía estaba cargado completamente para el nuevo lote de patatas y el bacalao; nunca me dieron un reembolso para las patatas fritas frías. La comida no tengo problemas con el servicio, pero aquí es un sitio asqueroso. Quizás podría haber evitado todo el estrés de 20 minutos tanto a la tienda de chips y dos veces si me gustaría solicitaron repetir yo si él estaba seguro de lo que estaba diciendo y asumimos. Prefiero pedirá a repetirla de caminar por 20 minutos y luego darse cuenta me han dado el orden equivocado cuando llegué a casa.

Have been here a few times now. The chips are ok but the fish is full of oil and tasteless. I will try Broomheads from now. I can't understand the good reviews.

Nice fish and chips however can be abit up and down on quality.

Convenient for Crookes, fairly priced and good fish and chips with friendly staff.

Along with two steps chippy down in Ecclesall, this is the best chippy I've been too in Sheffield. The fish was spot on, crispy enough but without too much batter, and the chips were as chippy chips should be. Will definitely be returning.
