The Ackhorne in York

Been coming to York for years but only visited this place for the first time on Sunday just gone, Great pub, good choice of beer. And the food menu looked fantastic, as did the food coming from the kitchen, Overheard that they were booked up for Sunday lunch, but we weren't looking to eat so weren't disappointed. But know to book in future if we want to return!

This might be the best Sunday dinner I have ever had. Staff were very friendly too! Got lucky as a booking never turned up as they are way too popular for walk ins and for good reason!! Beef and lamb were incredible! The roasties and the cauliflower cheese too. Any time I'm in York I'm booking my dinner here

No food except snacks but a good old fashioned pub with very pleasant staff. A very decent Ruby Mild very well kept.

Jan2025 - in for a quick beer this time. Fresh paint and soft furnishings make over but still the same great pub with great beer. Previous - Great beer as ever. Impromptu "Pop Master" mini quiz & nice banta. Absolutely Fab Sunday Roast.

Lovely little out of the way pub, never gets too busy, has a lovely atmosphere and nice outdoor smoking area, very pleasant staff and local pub vibes.

Excellent range of well-kept hand-pulled beers to suit all tastes. Traditional back street ale house with a lot of character, and characters. Friendly staff.

Wouldn't serve us food...then a group of 4 came in after us which they served food too..very disappointed 😑

A good back street pub, with some very good real ciders, including the excellent Dudda's Tun Bone Dry. No food except Sunday dinners. Used to be 5 stars from me, down to 4 now they force drinkers to listen to blaring muzac. Perhaps I should take to bringing earplugs

Strange to be kicked out dead on 11 on a Friday night. Staff clearly not keen to serve us after ten thirty. Slightly surreal experience in a pub I've been coming to for years and always previously really liked.

Unos amigos y yo vinimos aquí a eso de las 10: 00 , nos recibieron muy antipático. Fue un cumpleaños de amigos, así que no cambió los ánimos. Mi amigo entonces accidentalmente se dejó caer una bebida sobre sí mismo, un miembro del personal entonces vino y nos insultó 5 segundos después. Luego lo confrontamos por ser grosero, y luego nos amenazaron con romperte la mandíbula. Luego nos fuimos y llevaba un bate de béisbol por la calle. Como residente de toda la vida de York, no puedo creer que Regis haya sucedido

Lovely old traditional pub in the heart of York. Avoid the main streets, venture out in to back streets, better pubs, and this is definitely one of those.

Good beer. Fair prices. An old fashioned gem.

A friendly atmosphere in a proper pub - one from your misspent youth. It gets busy so phone ahead to reserve a table. No food on offer at present….but “watch this space” I’m told. All proper drinks available too.

This is a decent real ale pub on a lane off Micklegate. The choice of drinks is good as are the prices. It's looking slighly run down if I'm honest and there are numerous other pubs in the city centre but it's not at all bad.

Older pub off the main road, has lots of civil war stuff on the walls. Nice beers

Great little pub away from the tourist trap spots (e.g. the extremely arrogant Three Tuns in the tourist haven proper centre). Would highly recommend. NB: Feel a bit sorry for the neighbours around the beer garden, some signs asking those drinking to keep it down in the evening might be a good idea!

A very good Sunday lunch with lots of fresh well cooked meat and veg. They also dealt with my grandsons allergies easily. Would recommend

Really enjoyed our first visit to the Aycorne this week. Off the beaten track but comfortable traditional bar. Ruby ale was spot on and very reasonable. Service was great very friendly and welcoming. Deffo recommend a visit 😁

This is one of our favourite places in York as always the staff are great they sell real ale as well we'd definitely recommend everyone to go here. It's also dog friendly

Just had a delicious Sunday roast here, couldn't fault it, nice to have great food served in an unpretentious setting. The veggie option for my partner was really nice which it basically never is, and they gave me a generous portion of pink beef rib eye. We also got to meet the resident friendly bulldog as well which was a bonus.

We didn't have food but hear the Sunday lunches are good. Great pub down a side street and a nice friendly vibe. Could have stopped there all day but we were having a wander. If you want a real pub, good beers, no wifi so talk to your family and/or friends this is the place for you!

Off the beaten path. Reasonable prices.

Five stars. Superb Sunday lunch. Friendly and no-fuss staff. Had beef, pork, lamb and butternut squash dinners and all were high quality. Down to earth place that’s relaxed but the food is high quality. A tiny bit slow to serve you.

Has a dart board for display purposes, not allowed to use it. Over priced beer for its location (no foot traffic, down a back alley) and dodgy electrics sprung all around the seating area. Looks like the whole pub is powered off one extension chord. Bar keeper told us we can't play darts but we can play pool, but they don't have a pool table? It's like an establishment in Alice in wonderland

A real gem of a find. Great local pub, beer is really well kept, lively atmosphere. Went back for Sunday lunch today and it was splendid. Beautifully cooked meat and trays of veg to share for the table. A really lovely way to come together for a family Sunday lunch with our young people at Leeds and York Uni. Thank you so much for fitting us in. Highly recommend!!!

Not the easiest pub to find in the dark but I'm glad I made the trek. Steady business but still quiet during my visit. Solid selection of cask ales and some rustic, cozy rooms to sit down with a pint. Friendly local bartender. Would love to have a pub like this in my neighborhood.

Nice back street boozer. I went mid week and late evening so not many people in. People and barman very welcoming. Good selection of real ales. Landlord has 2 dogs who roam around waiting to get petted.

Best Sunday Roast I've had in ages!

Oh my word! Great service..very friendly! Allowed to taste ales as tasters before ordering. Temporarily left partner in bar for the staff to make her suitably at ease. Dogs are a feature to which again made my partner very happy. Good ales and friendly reception...seek out this traditional pub!

Not just one of the best pubs in York but one of the best in the whole country. Been several times over the years. Booth and Madge making a first appearance...I think. Set off the main street just out of sight due to the street bending. Long pub with a rear courtyard where we once sat in a freezing winter as the inside was rammed. Had their house 3.8% bitter brewed by Half Moon. Very good. One of six hand pumped real ales. They have bar billiards as well. I love the game; far better than pool and takes up little room. Also a CAMRA Good Beer Guide regular. Lovely interior. Even have pub dogs!

What a find, just off one of the main streets. Quite a busy little pub with an excellent selection of real ale. Well done. We will be visiting again

We had drinks one Sunday afternoon which was lovley great little pub cosy clean and staff was so friendly the Sunday lunches looked good too ..used to go in here in my younger days still a great pub will be returning very soon 😀 🥂🍾

Follow the sign on the corner of Micklegate & St Martin’s Lane to find this classic old pub serving cask ale from some of Yorkshire’s lesser known breweries. A true gem and quite rightly in the Good Beer Guide.

Called in here a few times previously for drinks, it’s one of my faves in York. Ate Sunday lunch today for the 1st time. Highly recommended. Better than most restaurants I’ve eaten at. Could tell a lot of care had gone into the prep & cooking. Shared a chorizo platter to start then I had beef & my girlfriend chicken. Will definitely be back. Recommend booking as its popular. Dog friendly, made friends with a resident bulldog.

Cheap and cheerful pub for locals. We popped in for one and walked in on the pub quiz (which seemed super hard). Really friendly bar staff and a cute pair of boxers to stroke.

Best Sunday Roast in York hands down. I booked a table for 11 and they brought out all of our courses out together which is a feat in itself. The roast was amazing. I had lamb and it was the best cooked lamb I've eaten in ages. Family who head beef and pork said the same. Starters had real wow factor especially considering the reasonable prices. The pub itself I have visited many times and is a hidden gem close to town but tucked in a side street. The decor is just classic old world York put and the warm welcome is classically traditional. Beer kept expertly and always a good pint.

Absolutely amazing Sunday roast. Pub was absolutely rammed at 2pm and can see why. Only knocked a star off the atmosphere because it did smell slightly of wet dog when first entering but not sure that can always be helped in dog friendly pubs. Food was 10/10, got so much lamb and super tender.

A great little traditional pub, tucked down an alleyway off the main street. Nice atmosphere, friendly staff and good selection of beers and spirits.

Absolutely stunning pub, very pretty and intimate with stained glass windows and two lovely pub dogs. One of the best bartenders I've ever been served by, who knew his customers' orders on sight and spotted when they were low to put on new pints. Very convivial. Only loses a 5 star rating as the Guinness was bad.

Had two really nice pints of Rudgate Ruby. Bar staff were friendly and helpful. Definitely will be coming back. Good ambience music too.

Dog friendly pub which was a bit too Dog friendly for my liking. Pong of wet dog greets you when you enter and there are dogs laying on the seats instead of humans! Dogs on floor humans on seats in my mind. Lovely pint though and it will suit some but not all.

Has a bar billiards table, unusual in this part of the country. 🙂 Moretti is no longer available 😭

I visited this wonderful pub 2 weeks a go. I was made so welcome. The staff are open and friendly. I didn't get enough stamps on my loyalty card . I have given it to my friend Martin hoping you let pass my loyalty let him get his second pint . Thank you and your staff making me so welcome
