Micklegate Fisheries in York

I arrived at just before 6pm. I waited at least 15 to 20 mins for 1 Haddock 1 Cod 1 chips between us. He asked if we were sharing the chips I said yes and he said he would share them in the dishes. It was the worst fish n chips I have ever eaten. The batter is soggy and wet, the mountain of chips, some were okay while others tasted about a year old. He served two other customers before us who were buying sausage and chips. I feel like taking it all back, the only bit we ate was the actual fish. Tomorrow I will call York Council this is dreadful if this is the kind of rubbish being sold well it should not be allowed 16.10 later. Chronic distaste in my mouth now.

I went in around 30 minutes before closing time and the man de Chef kindly cooked us up a battered jumbo and they have scraps too (my favourite). I can't really comment on the fish as I haven't had any from here as yet. Still warm after I got home, made a brew and sat down to eat 20 minutes later. The perfect, freshly made, super chrispy, affordable (£8), and juicy cod that's about twice of an adult hand. Must visit again. Add: I visited about an hour later and order the Haddock version. It is even bigger that the paper container couldn't fit. Shame I forgot to take a photo.

Average chippy. Chips had been cooked off a while, just about warm, battered sausage was awful, probably been in the hot cupboard for a long time. Reasonable value.

They served the worst burger ive ever had and .ive been to dodgey lower league football grounds. cardboad would have been more palatable. I'm almost tempted to give them 5 stars to make a burger that terrible is quite a feat.

Solid fish and chip meal, served warm and promptly. Importantly, I accidentally left my bag containing a laptop there. I was relieved to find that the staff had stored it safely and promptly returned it to me when I came back. Their attention to customer care really stood out.

Not great; cold and rubbery chips!

Both the fish and chips were sadly undercooked and by the time I got home 7 mins later the chips were cold. Fish was freshly cooked and still hot so I think the chips were not really hot enough when served. Disappointing.

Had four portions of sausages and chips (2×battered, 2xplain) with curry sauce. My battered sausage was rubbery , discoloured and tasteless... so I chose not to eat it. Minimal salt and vinegar was put on the chips by the staff member. The curry sauce was bland. One member of our party had an upset stomach the next day. Not sure if it was linked to the food, though thought I'd share the information. Definitely will not be returning here. Will spend our hard earned money elsewhere.

Great tasting food and very reasonable prices. Fish and chips is fantastic and the wait was less than 5mins for our to be cooked freshly. Great location near the train station so perfect if your train is delayed and also perfect for a walk on the walls before or afterwards.

Popped in after having disappointing fish and chips elsewhere on my travels. This place served the best fish and chips I’ve ever had. The fresh haddock was moist and battered perfectly. The chips were not overly greasy and especially tasty with the seasoning salt added at the counter.

Not sure what the bad reviews are about as I have used this chippy several times when in York and the food is always good with good portions. Often have a chip butty with peas - now you might think, what can go wrong with something like that? Trust me - plenty. The bap is always soft and fresh, the chips are well cooked, not greasy, tasty and plenty of them, and the peas are really nice. I have had fish and chips occasionally and they're also lovely. Wouldn't go anywhere else, a lovely traditional chippy.

Got to be the worsted fish and chips I've ever had. Don't know what was wrong with the fish, but I was constantly throwing up on the Thursday morning after my fish and chips on the Wednesday night. Tried to make my way home had to stop in Newcastle overnight Thursday, spent 4hours just being sick. I definitely won't be recommending anyone to go there. Hope someone from the chip shop will respond to this. My advice is stay away I've had a look at other reviews on here, and noticed all the bad reviews don't get answered, but you get a thankyou for the good reviews. You'd think they want to find what can be done better, obviously not!!

Cooked in Beef Dripping. The large Haddock was not large. Its a take away. Having said that the F&C `s are put in a Polystyrene box , which is a no, no? Why, because the fish on top of the chips steam making the chips soggy and fish.The chips were not Chrispy or fluffy, like they should be. The only redeaming factor was the fish , it was tasty, But I suspect it was down to the Beef dripping. F&C and battered sausage over £12. We are from London, but its expected in Yorkshire , Beef dripping etc that F&C would be top notch, this experience fell well short.

They have told me they don’t fry fish in the same oil as meat, that’s why I continuously bought from them for couple of months. Today they tell me they do fry fish and meat together and allways did, terrible service for somone who is pescatarian. I won’t be back!

Up in York for a long weekend with my cricket team and we called in on Friday evening for fish & chips. We were glad we did, as this was the best fish and chips I’ve had in a long long time. Lovely white fish with nice bubbly crisp batter and great chips.

Google suggested there was a dine in option. It is a takeaway only, BUT.. The owner saw the funny side when I showed him the search results. He immediately suggested we make an eating area with the 3 waiting chairs and the bench next to the counter. We did exactly that! As we sat enjoying the delicious fish and chips, more people arrived (with cases) and asked where the restaurant was!!! He said - “ if you are happy to wait, I’ll get more chairs” 😂😂 Very accommodating and great fun!

Got a piece of fish and it was very good and fresh. Batter was light, and the fish was tasty. Service was friendly and welcoming. Very good place for a quick snack.

I’ve been visiting the Micklegate Fish and Chip shop for about 4 years now. The food is always excellent, freshly cooked with all of the menu classics you’d expect. Staff have always been friendly and service has always been quick. Would recommend to anyone, another brilliant independent business in Micklegate!

Very good Fish and chips. Freshly fried. Small bench to eat outside adds a bit of climate. Definitely worth a try... and you will save pound or two compared to city centre. And this is still city centre ;)

Best Chippy in York, hands down. No overly greasy chips, or slimy fish! They also do really well priced offers and deals when you decide to walk in. Cheap, tasty, and fantastic customer service! What else could you ask for?

Staying in the area, out looking for a take away, tried here, it was very nice, small fish, large fish, chips, 2 sausages, mushy peas and gravy between us, all very nice and reasonable prices as in the city centre, nice lady served us, would use again if we come back to stay in York.

Very much enjoyed my Cod and chips with salt and vinegar and mushy peas, reasonably priced as well

I loved eating my 2 Battered sausages from this place and would of purchased the Cod or Plaice and Chips too. I was not that overly keen on really ordering from your place as for me I found it is not a great size shop and really not a great view for me personally so do not take that too personally just not my cup of tea that's all.

We wanted a simple dinner after exploring the city, it was absolutely delicious. The batter was extremely light, the fish was fresh and the chips were crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside. Excellent service.

We are on holiday in the UK for a few weeks. I've had good fish and chips in London and 3 different cities in Scotland. This was my fifth fish and chips on this trip and it was the best by far. The batter on the fish was perfectly crunchy and light. AND it was the priced the best. I wasn't expecting that. Highly recommend.

As a regular visitor to York from my hometown in Scotland I enjoy the local restaurants as well as all the other benefits of visiting this beautiful city. One of my favourites is in micklegate where I go for traditional fish and chips which are served in a large box and taste delicious. The staff are friendly and welcoming and if you find the restaurant too far away from your location they deliver as well. I highly recommend you try the food here.

On 2 visits to York we had Fish and Chips from Micklegate Fisheries and the meal was perfect! Delightful staff who were courteous and friendly. Highly Recommended, we will eat here on every visit to beautiful York.

I picked up my first ever uber delivery. The chap serving was fast freindly and welcoming and the food looked and smelled amazing. Its my sons favourite chippy. A must for fish and chip lovers

We have been regular customers of Micklegate, impressed by good food and good portions. But something has changed, firstly a couple of weeks back the curry sauce was just coloured water...then tonight we ordered our usual of Fish Chips, plus two battered sausages with mushy peas and curry sauce and were lucky to get anything because the delivery driver had no idea where he was going and after pestering my wife on the phone, he finally delivered to next door!! The sausages were poorly cooked (little batter), we got gravy instead of curry sauce and the smallest portion of chips you've ever seen, Very Poor! I don't know whats going on, but we'll ordering from another shop in future!!

Boutique chip shop. For about £3.50 you can get a big bag of chips, curry sauce and a can of Cola. The boss & his assistant are very polite. Nosh can be scoffed either inside the shop or on bench outside. Highly recommend.

Excellent fish &chips, every time!

Would have given 0 stars if possible! Chips were tasty but there were simply not enough. My regular portion was the same as friends very small small portion. Went in to ask for a few more and the guy was quite rude. Simply said I was wrong. Quite expensive as well at £1.70 for small and £2 for regular chips.

We ordered food and you just gave us chips spent over £40 for something we didn't get no refund no nothing all we got was our numbers blocked. Robbers absolutely pathetic.

Contrary to the negative reviews I waited about 7 minutes and my meal was all well cooked with no rubbish and a reasonable price. It's nice to be able to use a proper chippy. Pleasant service from the lady behind the counter too.

Long wait, doesn't worth the time and money, absolutely awful, not twisty at all. Far away from TRADITIONAL fish and chips. Won't recommend it.

Dont know if we just caught them on a bad day but our fish and chips were awful. The fish batter you could just taste flour and the actual fish was awful. Chips and curry sauce were ok. So disappointed.

Tried them for first time, sadly left wanting. Small cod was a young child's portion and large was a standard regular. Large chips were a small to most fish & chips restaurants. Sadly won't be ordering again.

If you want fish and chips during lockdown then you’ll do no better than Micklegate Fisheries. The cod was moist and flaky and the chips were tasty (if a little small in portion size) treat yourself - enjoy!

On a really cold Monday night, although they were getting ready to close, the lady assistant very kindly made up a small fish and chips - which were delicious - Thank you for your kindness, I had travelled down from Scotland for work, at the height of the CV19 pandemic and so I was especially grateful for this lady's kindness.

Hi, we were your final customers last night ( Feb 1st 2020 ) & would like to say how well we were served, especially considering you were just about to close. Very friendly, which must be difficult at the end of a long day. We took the food back to our hotel, & there was more than enough for us both. I do it alone, but this place is good. The cod meat is plump. If you go with beer Fish and chips that are not greasy at all You will enjoy it

I've been here a couple of times and have been greeted by friendly staff both times. The food is reasonable priced too. This place is very convenient for the train station and much more affordable than any of the food outlets at the station.

Called in for 2 fish and chips and mushy peas, £12.90 which is about right nowadays, the lady who served us was very pleasant and the food was delicious.

I just wanted an easy takeaway and this was a perfect choice. I just had fish and chips and both were plentiful and delicious although I found the batter a bit too thick and couldn’t eat it all. The prices were higher than I was used to but I think it’s because it’s in a city rather than being provincial.

Used to be fantastic, not sure if been taken over though as twice now not been good. The batter was very soggy and the chips were undercooked also the peas were stone cold. Fridge cold as in straight from the tin. They obviously had forget to cook or walm up.
