We came here for lunch, and it was very pleasant. It is waiter/ waitress service, and it has a nice atmosphere. You can get a cooked lunch, with most tastes catered for,and which is probably better value than the sandwiches, which are very nice and well presented. The service is very professional and the staff are friendly. Recommended.

I am really pleased this restaurant has reopened after such a long time without a chef. It's the perfect place to dine alone or with friends. Always clean and welcoming. I have been eating here for years. It's such a pity that the food let's it down. My go to meal is always poached eggs on brown toast. This was my order on Friday and it was disappointing. The eggs were slightly over but it was the toast that was the problem. The cheapest thinnest tasteless bread available. Because it was obviously the worst sliced bread out there it toasted like burnt cardboard. It always used to be thick granary in days past. My friend had Welsh rarebit that looked like melted cheese had been dropped from a great height. The menu is so reduced now, no cheese sandwich?? and the prices so much higher that it does not give good value.

Review for cafe...not the restaurant. Staff were very abrupt, cafe was cramped and overcrowded. Was told to find a table first then go up and order which meant someone else then assuming the table was free whilst I was ordering. Panini was a warm thin baguette overloaded with bland cheese, accompanied by unseasoned oven chips and a limp salad. Definitely not worth the menu price! Two very poor quality dry crumbly scones served with butter only. Lattes were reasonable. Would not return or recommend.

Stopped off for something to eat on a recent York visit. Was very quiet for some reason but it certainly wasn't because of the food. We had 3 separate dishes and all were described as very good. I went for the gammon and it was very tasty - the best I've had for some time. Licenced as well so had a cheeky cider to go with my meal. Service was good and prices were fine. Great unrushed visit.

Had to come to York today so decided to go here for lunch as the city was very busy. This restaurant is well set out quiet and service is excellent. Tables and seating welcoming and cutlery and tableware spotless. The restaurant is mainly used for older people no children running about. The menu caters for all tastes. Our waitress was friendly polite and efficient. We had the all day breakfast at £8.50 and with a pot of tea for two was £21.90 in total. The food was beautifully presented hot and tasty. Definitely recommend.

After reading the reviews it is obvious that the self service cafe on the ground floor isn’t the same as Rhodes Restaurant which is upstairs. The restaurant is quiet the self service cafe is always busy. The tables are well spaced and the seating is very comfortable. A lovely welcome from a waitress. My husband had the pulled pork panini with chips and I had the creamy mushrooms on ciabatta with a side salad. The food was excellent and presentation was perfect. We followed this with myself the chocolate gateau with caramel sauce and my husband the meringue nests with rum and raisin ice cream finished with passion fruit sauce. My husband ordered a pot of tea and again well presented with extra hot water. In the end I helped him drink it as it made 6 cups. The waitress was spot on and a credit to Browns. Definitely recommend. Go upstairs much better than the self service cafe. The bill was £30.40.

Went for nice lunch 2 days ago sat inside as so hot. No air conditioning but no windows open. Staff said they never open the windows. Ordered food and drinks. Took 30 minutes before drinks arrived which were wrong so removed & correct drinks arrived. Then food came & avocado & egg salad had NO egg, had 2 cherry tomatoes, some avocado with some feta, chives & small amount of salad which cost £10.25! This was meant to be a main meal option. There was no dressing or offer of dressing. Totally overpriced & poorly presented with missing ingredients & tiny portions. Not impressed. Tried to speak to staff but they were difficult to speak to as they were overstretched trying to cope with the demands indoors & outdoors! Long time since we’ve been to Browns but won’t be returning & wouldn’t recommend. Company needs to look at local competitors and up their game & reduce their prices. Left feeling hungry!!!

My wife and I have recently lunched again, probably for the sixth time, at Rhodes. The lift takes visitors to the upper floor where the quiet, calm atmosphere proves a welcome change from the street bustle of the city -- and from the crowdedness of many of York's eateries. We have always found the staff helpful, pleasantly disposed and willing to go the extra mile. Its unpretentious menu delivers what it says: good meals at good prices. For a quieter experience stil, l I strongly recommend their late lunch (after 14.30) where Eggs Benedict or Kedgeree prove great value.

I went with my daughter to have Sunday lunch, she ordered chili with rice, which she said was very good. I ordered the roast pork, which was tender and quite tasty, my Yorkshire pudding on the other hand was cold, I remarked about this to the waitress, who brought me another hot one, I then tasted the cauliflower cheese which was also cold, watery and tasteless, the stuffing was packet stuff, which if made correctly is fine, however this was a stodgy mess, the roast potatoes were very different to other roast potatoes I have eaten, and the carrots were very thinly sliced, therefore making them tasteless also! I was unable to finish the meal because it was not enjoyable at all. The waitress didn't charge me for my meal. I would have expected more from Brown's department store, but sadly it doesn't live up to it's reputation where the restaurant is concerned.....

The latte was served in a glass with a chrome fitting handle. Thoroughly enjoyed my breakfast. Whilst eating I noticed the lady brought some money back to a lady at another table who had forgotten her change, nice touch and lovely to see customers been looked after. Definitely recommend. I sat at a dirty table (one of many) and eventually ordered a cheese savoury sandwich. It came straight away, but it was a sorry sight, thin bread, not the wholemeal I'd ordered, with grated cheese! We've never been here before but noticed a sign outside the store advertising a full breakfast in the restaurant with a free tea or coffee. We headed upstairs and into the restaurant which wasn't very busy. We took a seat and waited while a couple of staff rushed around serving other people. Eventually they came over to take our order but it would have been nice had they acknowledged us earlier and say they would come over on a few minutes. Anyway the breakfast was ordered but we were disappointed to see that black pudding was extra and so were beans and also hash brown. So by the time we added one or two of these on the price was going up. The food came promptly and was ok. Not the best cooked breakfast and the bacon looked like it had been sat in a grill pan for the last hour. Eventually we finished and paid. It took a while to get served at the counter to pay even though we were spotted by a couple of staff.

Recently visited the newly refurbished Rhodes restaurant. The food and pots of tea were good. The new ambience is also good. However the service was poor. Waited a while for our order to be taken and then to receive it. Whilst we were not in a hurry other customers were getting agitated. Also the staff seemed hassled even though the restaurant was far from full. We were delivered the wrong order to start with. Generally one did not get a good impression. Management need to make customers feel welcomed and valued. Recommend not sitting on the side bench seat next to the door marked Staff only. Door frequently used by general staff with various merchandise and is somewhat distracting.

I understand now why when entering this cafe it was virtually empty, I was overcharged, given the wrong receipt and was asked twice if the credit card left in the machine was mine when I paid cash. The children's food box consisted of door stop bread sandwich cut in half, thick cut crinkly crisps and a kit Kat, this was for a 2 year old. Really! The panini's we both had were okay but I have had better at a local shop and at half the price. I do also think that the dress code for some of the staff seemed inappropriate for one of York's lovely department stores.

We came here for lunch. The restaurant is called Rhodes and is located on the top floor of Brown's, the departmental store. The restaurant serves a wide variety of food from salads to meat dishes and of course fish and chips. The dining area is divided into two sections: with windows looking onto the streetscape of York and without windows. The area with the windows is nearby to the food island and also the kitchen. The restaurant ambiance was quite nice but perhaps the restaurant itself is a little plain. The service provided by the staff was good and they were friendly. The price was reasonable given the restaurant's setting in the city centre. I tried the fish platter which consisted of salmon, prawns, salad and anchovies. Overall, the taste was good but perhaps lacked some flavour. I had it with cappuccino and chocolate on top.I recommend this restaurant, if you are in York. Given its location in a departmental store, it is a little different to other, perhaps better known restaurants in the city centre. After finishing your food, you can walk around or shop at the store before moving to other shops.

I used to go here once a week for a treat but today will be my last visit. The last couple of times were a bit iffy but today was dreadful. The place is suffering since they changed the chef. One of my favourites is jacket potato with cottage cheese. This used to come with fresh fruit, at least four varieties plus salad. Today the potato was burnt, waxy and tepid. Obviously been sat for ages, reheated, unsuccessfully, and inedible. The fruit was a slice of tinned pineapple and two blackberries. The other thing on the plate was a tin?? with a bit of salad in it. Plus, since when did we change from being British to being American? I don't want my tea served as a pot of hot water and a teabag on the side!! There are so many great eating places in York, Cut and Chase, Lucky Days, The Source, The Hairy Fig to name a few that this level of meal is unacceptable.

This café is situated in a high class department store, the store has a great reputation for service and quality. When entering the café presentation of cakes and food displayed on the hot counter look very inviting. We ordered wraps, they were tiny, hardly any filling with a few dried out lettuce leaves thrown on our plates, cutlery was filthy, tea mugs were chipped, service very slow. Condiments are sachets of some cheap, nasty non branded stuff full of E numbers. As per other trip adviser comments this is a bad choice for a lunch break. There is a big anomaly in the quality and service being offered by the café and the main store. Browns management what are you thinking? Isn't it about time you listened to your customers comments and do something about your café, it really isn't good enough! Look at Fenwicks, maybe your customers should be shopping and lunching there instead.

Called yesterday on Father's Day. My husband ordered a bacon roll which he said was fine. I ordered a sausage sandwich , regret it was boring, dry and not worth any money.I didn't bother to complain as they must know how bad it was. They didn't need me to tell them.I ended up giving my sausages to my husband and leaving the bread..I will not call again.

An ideal way to refuel whilst on a shopping spree is to visit Brown's to sample the fare in Rhodes cafe/restaurant. Service is good, food tasty and arrives quickly! Coffee was piping hot and very good.

I took my Grandma and two younger sisters here for a drink around lunch time. For some bizarre reason, mine and one of my sister glass' smelt of coffee. My Grandmas hot drink was cold and to top it all off, I was finally short changed. I wouldn't come back again unless I was parched.

Called for breakfast. Service was a little slow but the food made up for it. My husband had scrambled egg on toast and I had smoked bacon with marmalade a strange combination but it was very tasty. Highly recommended. Clean well worth a visit.

We arrived a little late for lunch and were directed to the only free table, right by a port hole opening to the kitchen! The café has a nice feel about it with chairs and tables comfortably spaced. A pleasant young lass takes our order. We had hoped for soup, but the only choice was mushroom - which is fine for those who like mushroom! Then my wife ordered something with chilli, but they had run out. The food and drink were fine, but I had some problems paying - no one wanted to take my money! Perhaps it would be 4/5 on a better day. The café has toilets a short distance away, but up a floor.

As regular visitors to York and Browns Department Store we decided to have a cup of tea. The ground floor cafe operates a self-service system. This includes cleaning your own table. The milk jug was not fit for purpose spewing the contents all over the table as you tried to pour it. The teapot was slightly better. A trip to the servery island revealed a limited supply of serviettes. The price for this experience was £4.40 (I think). Later the same day we visited the Grand Hotel & Spa where a pot of tea for two costs £4.50 - its amazing what you get to 10p. Also the washrooms are on the second floor and poorly signposted.

My friend and I met up for our annual Christmas lunch in York and as we always have our lunch in Browns once a month we decided to try the Christmas lunch there. It was superb! One of the best! We were informed by the waitress that there would be a 20 minute wait as it was very busy, but that was fine by us.The turkey and accompanying vegetables were beautifully cooked and so tasty.Worth waiting for! Also very reasonably priced. Can't wait for next Christmas.

Food wss very good but let down by the sub standard service. We cane at a busy time and had to wait 35 mins for our order. Staff were in a daydream state and not in the slightest bit attentive. Had tocask 5 times for a glass of water and it took 4 visits to serve my main meal.

The café is situated on the upper floor of the store in York. Excellent menu choice and prices reasonable for city centre café/restaurant. This is an excellent choice if you are looking for something that bit special. The staff are always friendly and helpful.

We snack here quite often as the food is usually very good. I often enjoy a jacket potato, but on a miserable rainy November day I was easily swayed by them having a spicy parsnip soup. It was very good although below restaurant quality. Sadly, the bread roll was somewhat stale, although for dunking it didn't matter so much. Followed by a strawberry topped cheesecake, I really enjoyed my lunch. My only real gripe with this place is that I'm not keen on the layout & feel of the place. Maybe Mr Brown might look at a bit of a revamp? Will be back regardless, but it is a tad behind the times....

Although we live in York this is the first time we've been to the Rhodes for breakfast. We both ordered the full breakfast - they were large portions (including 2 rashers of bacon and 2 eggs each) and freshly cooked. The coffee with it was delicious (came with hot milk) and the service was very friendly and helpful. A great way to start a Saturday shopping trip. We'll be back !

I am a fairly frequent visitor to the outside café are of Brown's cafe in York. It is well situated in the centre of the city and is a great place to enjoy coffee and cake and just people watch.Today, however, was not such a good visit. All of the tables were just as their previous occupants had left them, dirty cups and saucers etc but I sat down and waited anyway. After about 10 minutes no one had been so I went inside to see if anyone was serving outside - I was assured that there was so I went and sat back down. A young lady turned up after a further 5 minutes and took my order. When she returned with my coffee, another customer had sat down at one of the other tables but instead of serving her, my waitress went back inside. The other customer waited for about 10 minutes then simply stood up and left.I stayed for at least half an hour but, by the time I left, non of the other tables had been cleared and no other customers had sat down. I wonder why?Very poor service at what used to be a bustling little outdoor café.

Everyone always goes on about how amazing Browns is - so I thought I would give it a go with my parents! Firstly the staff know exactly what everything is and how it is cooked so I praise them on that. However, service is very slow. My mum had a chicken and bacon wrap (lighter option) it wasn't so light as it was just filled with mayo!! She couldn't even eat it!!! My dad had gammon, chips and peas. Safe to say the gammon was about 5cm long by 4cms wide and it was tasteless. On the other hand, I had eggs Benedict with bacon which was surprisingly delicious. However, I will not be visiting again as the food is not worth the money at all and service wasn't that great!!

Our day trip to York turned out to be on one of the hottest days of the year, so we looked for a lunch venue which was likely to be air-conditioned. We were fortunate to find just that at Rhodes cafe in Browns department store. My husband chose jacket potato with bacon and cheese, and I had chicken, bacon and aubergine with salad. With a pot of tea for two we were quite satisfied. The service was excellent and the price reasonable.

This was our second visit to Rhodes Cafe and we were not disappointed.Although it was the middle of a busy Saturday lunchtime we were seated promptly and presented with menus by a very smiley waitress.Drinks were brought and orders taken quickly even though she was busy clearing tables and waiting on customers. I had the Light Option seafood curry which was made with fresh ingredients and a lovely sauce. My husband had Pork Stroganoff again made with fresh veg, both portions were substantial and excellent value. People may be sniffy about eating in a Department Store Cafe but for great food, good service and clean surroundings I would suggest that you give it a try.

After more than two hours on the road, we arrived in need of breakfast. We waited 40 minutes to be served. Breakfast consisted of one tasteless, dried out sausage, rock-hard bacon rashers that had fused together under the hot lights, baked beans with dry skin on them and cold toast. The fried egg was freshly done.Naively, I thought the delay was due to all the breakfasts being cooked to order. No, the kitchen staff were either: 1. Overwhelmed by having to cook breakfast for hungry travellers (two weeks before Christmas, York was very, very busy)2. Completely lost our order. (How?)3. Did not take breakfasts seriously as a meal, preferring to direct their energies to lunches. (This was the opinion of the person who took our cash from us). Following my complaint to this person, our bill was reduced by the value of the tea and coffee. This was the tea and coffee which was served and drunk 30 minutes before the "meal" arrived.Sheer hunger, the closure of the Fenwick restaurant and its defection to Carluccio's, the sure and certain knowledge that if we had left the cafe we would have to queue and wait for hours at Betty's. Not impressed, not recommended, not really edible, not going back. This is the sort of "meal" that gives England a bad reputation.

Lovely place to eat, so cozy and the food was just fantastic! It was fairly busy when we went but we didn't have to wait long for food to come out either.

I was very puzzled by the food I was served this past weekend. When told that the prawns starter was not available, I opted for the hoisin mushroom skewer. This was explained as 'just mushrooms on a stick' by the waitress. We explained we were in a bit of a rush. So we were going to have just 1 course. It took 45 minutes to arrive. And it was not mushrooms. It took me a while to work out what it was, but I decided it was shredded duck, shaped in lumps, put on a skewer and drizzled with hoisin sauce. Once I got the idea of what I was eating, it was actually quite nice. Wouldn't have been though for a vegetarian thinking they'd ordered mushrooms 😉 and the skin on chips and the skewers were like warm, rather than hot. Disappointing. I'd post a photo, but can't see an option to do this.

Can always rely on Wetherspoons, they serve Kopparberg on tap which I love.

Big noisy chain pub, food prices are reasonable and quality is what you'd expect from such a place. Reasonable family venue. Doesn't excel in anything particular.
