Looks a bit shabby from the outside, but the welcome was friendly. Good choice of keg beers and extensive menu with specials on a board. My tuna & mayonnaise sandwich was tasty and great value.

Great little place out the way of the bustling town. Chilli was ok - my friends loved their meals! Pudding was lovely and service super quick. Can’t ask for more

We were staying nearby so decided to eat here and were very glad we did! Having arrived early and enjoyed the afternoon sunshine in the beer garden we had starters outside. The pork bites were fantastic, the squid beautifully cooked. We moved inside as the temperature dropped and the kind staff put the fire on and carried on with our meal. The burger and pizza were superb and the bill very reasonable, the staff were all brilliant, attentive and friendly. Thoroughly recommend this lovely village pub.

Just a 10 minute swerve off the South Downs Way, tasty bites, lovely garden, and Virginia Wolfs house (limited opening) is just down the road

Lovely staff fast service and good we'll presented food. Nice atmosphere although the music coming through the speakers was a tad loud for one to speak to each other at some of the tables. Would recommend to others.

Great menu, delicious food and friendly and efficient staff. Can thoroughly recommend this great pub restaurant: venison & bacon pie with very creamy mash and Sussex Smokie both excellent, followed by a lovely orange & chocolate torte.

I've eaten here twice recently. Sat inside and outside too. The pub has a nice atmosphere and the staff are friendly and helpful. The menu is quite extensive and includes a specials board, with veg options. Prices are about average for around here, but as with all pub meals, what used to be between £10-12 now seems to be around £14-16.

Love coming to This place. Staff are polite and welcoming. The Sunday roast is excellent. I highly recommend you give it a try.

This little gem of an English pub is in Rodmell, half way between Lewes and Newhaven We stopped in for lunch with our granddaughter. I had one of the specials, bacon & onion pudding with mash and vegetables. My wife had another one, steak & mushroom pie also with mash and veg. Both were excellent. The pudding was a real suet pudding and the pie was a real pie! In so many pubs a pie is a bowl of stew with a puff pastry lid and a pudding is an inferior pie. Not here though Our granddaughter had a child's pizza, when they brought out a huge one they apologised saying that they'd run out of small ones and they'd only charge us for a child's one. We'll be back!

Last minute decision to come here for dinner. So glad we did. Good choice on the menu and on the specials’ board. Thoroughly enjoyed the Sussex Old Smokie, a really delicious fish dish with fabulous chips! The sausage and mash was also a hit. Will definitely be returning.

Our regular Sunday nut roast. Great food, excellent staff, well priced. Lucku Saint alcohol free lager is the best and nut roast unbeatable. Very popular so wise to b.ook.

Spontaneous dinner out and hurried there as the kitchen is closing at 4 on Sundays. The staff was super nice and efficient. The burger patty was burnt. But overall the atmosphere and the food was good. Also, deep fried pork belly is amazing.

It was, according to the locals, a quiet night but I really enjoyed myself. I got talking with a local and he taught me a new pub game called toads. The open fire was a lovely addition to what I would describe as a quaint pub. I'm on holiday and I'll be back in before I go home!

Visited for lunch. Pub is spacious yet cosy. Good service from the staff, food was delicious and arrived in a timely manner. The burger was delicious, the patty was very flavourful and the cheese, bun and salad fresh. Great value for the food, we had a very pleasant lunch

We have visited this pub often over the years and keep coming back as the staff and location are lovely. Having had a bad Sunday lunch a few years back we have left Sundays alone for a while but decided to try again - sadly Sunday dinner was still a disappointment. The beef was stringy, carrots and broccoli too hard to enjoy and the Yorkshire was burnt. Lovely potato’s and plenty of chicken on the plus side!

Been to this wonderful pub on numerous occasions with the family and as a couple with my wife. The food has always been fantastic as well as the service . My kids love going here and we often go as a couple as it’s one of our favourite places to go. Keep up the good work and don’t change a thing

I popped in for a quick pint and a bite to eat as the pub is situated in a perfect location between Lewes and Newhaven. The staff were incredibly friendly and although there was a group of children outside who were using the garden as if it were an extension of their own playgroup, the staff inside were very quick to attend to me. Food great, lost a star for the atmosphere created by the unruly entitled mob outside. 10/10 for effort for the team. I’ll be back midweek without the threat of entitlement!

This is ideally placed for a mid ride pause between Lewes and Newhaven. Unfortunately the owners don´t welcome cyclists. We were a group of 40 who ordered many drinks and chips but were kicked out of the otherwise deserted garden because some of us were eating their own snacks. Amazingly rude and short sighted.

Sunday lunch booking for three. Although very busy the service was attentive and efficient. The food was served well presented, tasty and hot. I thought the portion size was huge to be honest. The pub had a busy vibe but pleasant and an open log fire too. The menue was good in terms of selection and price and we will definitely return.

Nice to see the pub busy especially 5pm on a Sat. Good atmosphere and great service. Great variety on the menu, thoroughly enjoyed the Sussex Smokie, the steak pie special was also enjoyed. Can also highly recommend the Malbec. Not visited in a while but working out when I can go again already. Only issue is whether to have the Sussex smokey I enjoyed so much or one of the many other temping meals....

Great weekend lunch - all you can ask for in a country pub - warm welcome 8mg staff, efficient services, good menu choice and food, excellent local beers, and an open fire.

A very cold day but the pub had a roaring fire to welcome us. Tge food was fine and we had a very pleasant time.

Food was good. It has been nicely decorated inside and has a relaxing pub feel. Local Abyss beer on tap which is always welcome. No complaints.

Would it be too embarassing to admit we came to this establishment to eat and drink on 3 consecutive days. Need I say more? It simply speaks for itself. We just need a loyalty card scheme. If we didn't live in Norfolk we might just become regulars. Everything was just fab! Don't change anything.

Visited the previous day and was impressed by the great service & food. So...we booked to come again for their Sunday lunch. Enjoyed the roast beefs with lots of veg, roast potatoes, cauliflower cheese & a Yorkshire. Followed this with shared cheeseboard, treacle sponge & apple & blackberry crumble (both with custard). All were excellent. Great Harveys beer, especially the Bonfire Boy. Service is welcoming, friendly & efficient which nowadays can be a rare thing. Always seems to be popular & busy. Go there, you won't regret it!

Honestly love this place for a quiet drink. However we got two roast dinners and they were not great at all. We ordered our food and the lamb roast and beef arrived in front of us in 3 minutes which made us sceptical. Before the plate even hit the table the waitress had poured half of the plate of gravy on the floor. The lamb was hard, the beef was chewy and the potatoes were rock solid. Not to mention the Yorkshire puddings were black. You could clearly tell this had been left sitting on the side and re heated. Absolutely disappointing to pay £51 for food that isn’t edible.

I was part of a group who met for lunch. The food was good. Service was a little slow once we'd ordered. One of our group ordered soup, but it wasn't particularly hot. Some of us ordered coffees and they sat on the bar for a little while, which meant they weren't as hot as they could have been, although they were good quality. They did not offer gluten-free bread.

Staff were friendly and food great.

Very lovely, full of locals. Quite a big menu, choices even for vegetarians and vegans. Outside table surounded by plants, hiding the road. The bartender/waitress was very kind, nice and helpful. Thank you ps: I stayed in YHA south down hostel and walked path next to the road, in nature safe from cars. (very dark at night)

We were here for a meal on the Sunday after attending our daughter & and son-in-law's on Saturday. There 13 of us and the staff as usual were very good. The service was excellent and all the staff were friendly. A lovely way to end a lovely, happy weekend.

Friends from Lewes chose this as a venue for six of us to have lunch on a Sunday. My roast dinner was almost inedible. Had obviously been under hot light for ages. Just about all the remaining menu had high amount of fried food.

Very limited choice of dishes because on Friday at 8:30 p.m. the kitchen is already closed but very good sandwich all the same and very friendly staff

This is a lovely venue, with very friendly, helpful staff and a good selection of beers - even a 0.5% alcohol lager on draught, which was excellent. The menu is varied and there is a specials board. Dogs are welcome in side, in the areas set aside for them, and also outside. There is plenty of space here, which is well decorated and smart - and there is a lovely terraced garden, with lots of tables. The meals were served quickly and everybody in our party enjoyed them. Unfortunately, my 'moving mountains' burger was not cooked through, and it tasted odd. So I left it, which was a real shame. As we had appointments and little time, I let it go and we left. With good service and pleasant people, I feel sure that it would not have been a problem to ask for another. We will certainly return when we are again in the area.

Lovely countryside pub just outside dull Newhaven. A welcome joy after leaving that depressive town. Good local ales, lovely customer service and a pleasant mix of customers. Nice sized carpark and busy, shows why. Nice pub.

Stopped in at this lovely pub when passing through the area. Lovely location, friendly staff and the food was great. We had a burger and also the chargrilled chicken with pitta bread. Wouldn’t have changed a thing about either meal! Lovely little garden to sit out in too. Will definitely visit again if passing through the area

Great pub with a friendly atmosphere. We have visited this delightful pub many times and are never disappointed. Service is always top notch and the food excellent. My daughter and I had our first roast at The Abergavenny and we were not disappointed, plenty of meat and vegetables and beautifully cooked. Portions always on the large side and a great selection on the menu for all tastes. Keep doing what you’re doing!

A busy pub with decent food. I opted for a half portion of fish & chips & was glad because I wouldn't have managed the full size. Batter a bit greasy (hence 4 stars) but crisp & tasty fish. Good chips & plenty of peas. My friend said her baked spud (a large one) with prawns & Marie rose sauce was delicious. Service was good after a poor start where we were ignored on arrival by a chap behind the bar (again a star deducted)

Very busy pub frequented by walkers and locals. A wide range of meals and specials with pizza a speciality. Ther pizza was large and a large amount of tomato sauce (be careful of the drips) which gave a very good flavour. (Forgot the camera) Lovely chicken and bacon salad. The icecream dessert but the tart was very underwhelming

We pre booked a table for 11 of us. There was a reasonably big car park and access to the bar and restaurant areas were level. Outside was an attractive split level area with tables which would be great to sit at on warmer evenings. Menu was extensive and varied and reasonably priced. The area we sat in was tucked away to one side of the entrance with a few other tables, which made it easy to chat. Everyone was very happy with their meals. I had an excellent steak and ale pie, mash and well cooked veg. Overall, we had a great evening.

Brilliant service and very welcoming staff. Went on a Sunday around lunch time and recieved food rather quickly despite being walk ins. Food was exceptional and portion sizes are perfect! 10/10 would recommend!

Went for a Wednesday lunch the other plates of food on table looked ok. However the pork belly red cabbage and dauphinois potatoes was shocking - there was not enough to feed a child the pork belly was not even the size of a small wine glass the potatoes were small and very disappointing. Not worth the money at all - if ordered anywhere else would have been twice that portion for price and same quality! Don’t order if you’re hungry. The time before we went my friend had pie and again not much on the plate.

We stopped for a quick meal and a warm up after a long morning outside in the cold and wind. Food was truly good. The hamburger was generous in size and fillings, my pork belly melted in the mouth. Five stars also for the lovely fireplace.

We had a surprise, themed birthday party with a two-course meal for 25 people, followed by an evening of drinking. The staff were incredible. The meal was fantastic. The team's level of organisation was outstanding and everyone was really friendly. Communication in the run-up to the event was clear and really helpful. What a fantastic pub.

2 beautifully cooked Fillet steaks. A friendly welcome, and a roaring wood fire. Lively background chattering from more and more people as they flowed in .. obviously popular helped by a large car park, lots of outside seating which will have to be enjoyed as we get better weather.
