Really nice meal, great service, helpful staff, very relaxing, great quality food, would definitely recommend. We were lucky to get a table so would advise you book ahead!

Good menu and modestly priced by today's standards. Generously sized sandwiches are available for those just wanting a light lunch. Good choice of cask beers. Close to Monks house (Virginia Woolf's home).

Drinks expensive.actual pub nice outside. Unfortunatly, had someone else's child constantly round our table being very annoying, so we left.

We were here for a meal on the Sunday after attending our daughter & and son-in-law's on Saturday. There 13 of us and the staff as usual were very good. The service was excellent and all the staff were friendly. A lovely way to end a lovely, happy weekend.

Friends from Lewes chose this as a venue for six of us to have lunch on a Sunday. My roast dinner was almost inedible. Had obviously been under hot light for ages. Just about all the remaining menu had high amount of fried food.

Very limited choice of dishes because on Friday at 8:30 p.m. the kitchen is already closed but very good sandwich all the same and very friendly staff

This is a lovely venue, with very friendly, helpful staff and a good selection of beers - even a 0.5% alcohol lager on draught, which was excellent. The menu is varied and there is a specials board. Dogs are welcome in side, in the areas set aside for them, and also outside. There is plenty of space here, which is well decorated and smart - and there is a lovely terraced garden, with lots of tables. The meals were served quickly and everybody in our party enjoyed them. Unfortunately, my 'moving mountains' burger was not cooked through, and it tasted odd. So I left it, which was a real shame. As we had appointments and little time, I let it go and we left. With good service and pleasant people, I feel sure that it would not have been a problem to ask for another. We will certainly return when we are again in the area.

Lots of good gluten free options which is brilliant for my friend (so many good options she kept going on about how impressed she was lol night!)

Lovely countryside pub just outside dull Newhaven. A welcome joy after leaving that depressive town. Good local ales, lovely customer service and a pleasant mix of customers. Nice sized carpark and busy, shows why. Nice pub.

Stopped in at this lovely pub when passing through the area. Lovely location, friendly staff and the food was great. We had a burger and also the chargrilled chicken with pitta bread. Wouldn’t have changed a thing about either meal! Lovely little garden to sit out in too. Will definitely visit again if passing through the area

Great pub with a friendly atmosphere. We have visited this delightful pub many times and are never disappointed. Service is always top notch and the food excellent. My daughter and I had our first roast at The Abergavenny and we were not disappointed, plenty of meat and vegetables and beautifully cooked. Portions always on the large side and a great selection on the menu for all tastes. Keep doing what you’re doing!

A busy pub with decent food. I opted for a half portion of fish & chips & was glad because I wouldn't have managed the full size. Batter a bit greasy (hence 4 stars) but crisp & tasty fish. Good chips & plenty of peas. My friend said her baked spud (a large one) with prawns & Marie rose sauce was delicious. Service was good after a poor start where we were ignored on arrival by a chap behind the bar (again a star deducted)

Very busy pub frequented by walkers and locals. A wide range of meals and specials with pizza a speciality. Ther pizza was large and a large amount of tomato sauce (be careful of the drips) which gave a very good flavour. (Forgot the camera) Lovely chicken and bacon salad. The icecream dessert but the tart was very underwhelming

We pre booked a table for 11 of us. There was a reasonably big car park and access to the bar and restaurant areas were level. Outside was an attractive split level area with tables which would be great to sit at on warmer evenings. Menu was extensive and varied and reasonably priced. The area we sat in was tucked away to one side of the entrance with a few other tables, which made it easy to chat. Everyone was very happy with their meals. I had an excellent steak and ale pie, mash and well cooked veg. Overall, we had a great evening.

Menu ,different foods available as well as normal pub grub. Very efficient all round.

Wonderful food, friendly staff. Excellent menu, something for everyone ! Heartily recommend the Chicken Piri Piri with vegetable couscous and salad / Rib Eye/ The pies !! A very enjoyable time.

Cozy old country pub with good food and a nice atmosphere. Gets busy at times so probably a good idea to book ahead. Has a free of charge car park but it's quite small. Reasonable prices, good staff team.

Brilliant service and very welcoming staff. Went on a Sunday around lunch time and recieved food rather quickly despite being walk ins. Food was exceptional and portion sizes are perfect! 10/10 would recommend!

Went for a Wednesday lunch the other plates of food on table looked ok. However the pork belly red cabbage and dauphinois potatoes was shocking - there was not enough to feed a child the pork belly was not even the size of a small wine glass the potatoes were small and very disappointing. Not worth the money at all - if ordered anywhere else would have been twice that portion for price and same quality! Don’t order if you’re hungry. The time before we went my friend had pie and again not much on the plate.

We stopped for a quick meal and a warm up after a long morning outside in the cold and wind. Food was truly good. The hamburger was generous in size and fillings, my pork belly melted in the mouth. Five stars also for the lovely fireplace.

We had a surprise, themed birthday party with a two-course meal for 25 people, followed by an evening of drinking. The staff were incredible. The meal was fantastic. The team's level of organisation was outstanding and everyone was really friendly. Communication in the run-up to the event was clear and really helpful. What a fantastic pub.

2 beautifully cooked Fillet steaks. A friendly welcome, and a roaring wood fire. Lively background chattering from more and more people as they flowed in .. obviously popular helped by a large car park, lots of outside seating which will have to be enjoyed as we get better weather.

We had a table of nine, including a two year old and a dog. The staff were amazing and looked after us throughout Lovely calm, friendly atmosphere with plenty of space. Beautiful family country pub, we will definitely be going back.

So have been here many times as it is a great substitute for going into town, lots of different menus to choose from plus some local drinks and other things to have. Great to be able to walk in and get something most days of the week that this is open. Would definitely come back at some point in the near future.

Very nice place to come to as this is covering a catchment area for local trips for food and drink. Nice selection of things to have here and a good time to come is early afternoon, as is a popular place. Have had many a successful meal and drink here during quieter times.

We were here as a party of 5 on Saturday 16th December. Very disappointing, food was just OK , zero atmosphere, the 2 front of house staff that were on , had no festive spirit at all! But why would you ...when at 8pm pre Christmas there's only 5 diners and 2 drinkers !! What's happened Abergavenny Arms ? We've eaten here several times before and had good pub grub , and atmosphere...where have all the customers gone . 🙄

So impressed with the staff here. We were a big group of walkers but the attentive ladies got us all our food really quickly. The kitchen must have been going full tilt but the food was superb, highly recommended.

We walked here over the downs from Saltdean, for lunch (booking in advance). It is a friendly place, with a good pub food menu. The staff were very helpful. I had Sussex Smokie (cheesy smoked fish pie) with chips and a small very fresh tasty salad; all excellent, with generous portion sizes. Dog friendly. I'd definitely go again! The walk was good too!

Ordered items off the Christmas Menu and all were delicious. Staff were friendly and attentive. Glad we had booked as the pub filled up quickly. Thank you for a lovely meal

Booked for lunch after a mornings walk [31/10] and I have to say I was very impressed with the pub, staff and the lunch. Food was excellent [Sausage & Mash] with the sausages being super tasty. Washed down with a Harvey's Best, what more could you ask for. Overall, an excellent pub and great VFM - IMHO.

Lovely old pub good atmosphere friendly staff we whent for the steak night i had the rump steak very tough and my wife had sirloin witch was ok thay changed my rump steak with a sirloin as the rump was so tough with no problem and apologized so apart from that very nice meal good portions and value for money

We were on a hike in the great October weather and popped in for one and ended up having three. Nice garden if the weather is good. Was busy as it was a Sunday lunchtime, didn't have food but it looked very nice.

Four of us had a very nice lunch here on Monday 02/10. Service was very efficient and friendly, good pint of Harveys as well. We thought providing half portions of some of the menu was a good idea. Would recommend this pub and shall look forward to returning.

We booked for a mid week family meal and found it was the “steak special” evening. Incredible value and amazing quality. We all enjoyed the rump steaks with trimmings and added a delicious peppercorn sauce. Lots of other menu choices too including pizzas and specials. Charming, cheerful staff plus very dog friendly. A very inviting pub and highly recommended. We will definitely return!

An absolute gem of a pub. Great food, attentive staff and dog friendly (dog sausage no problem!). Daisy and Chris are the perfect landlords super friendly and hospitable. I’ve been to quiet a few country pubs and this is head and shoulders above. Highly recommended. Just go and support them and see for yourselves!

Came here for a Sunday roast after hearing good things. The meat was delicious (particularly the beef) as we’re the yorkies however ALL of the veg/potatoes were cold and rock hard. Such a shame because everything else was lovely, the sticky toffee pudding was amazing and the staff were welcoming and friendly. We will come back to try the other food however if you’re coming for a roast, don’t expect anything amazing

My second visit in a matter of weeks and I cannot praise this pub enough. The owners, Daisy and Christopher have transformed this pub into something really special. Great atmosphere, excellent service and delicious food, you really can’t ask for more. We will definitely be back on a regular basis!

Stopped here while on a 17 mile hike from Lewes. Staff were friendly, food was mediocre, cider, locally made, was lovely. Slow to clear dishes, dessert arrived while main dishes still hadn't been cleared. Ordering and paying at the bar is never good service. Fairly empty on Sunday afternoon at 1530. Looks very run down from the outside.

What a fabulous Sunday lunch today! Very large portions excellent cooked! My husband had the Nut Roast and I had the Roast Chicken. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff. We asked for extra gravy and within a few minutes it was served! From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with a smile and shown to our table by the lovely Rosie. Service was excellent but unobtrusive. The whole atmosphere was just perfect! This is how the service industry should be. Excellent food, wonderful staff and lovely surroundings. Well done Rosie, Abby and all the staff. We will be back and certainly recommend!

If you haven’t been to this pub ! You really are missing a treasure of a place , we had burgers n chunky chips all I can say is wow delicious, staff are friendly and knowledgeable too . Highly recommend

We went here after a stroll on the downs and it met our expectations for lunch. We sat in the garden which is very well concealed from the roads. The portions are massive and has great food. I recommend the chips as they are very crunchy. 5 star pub tucked away in the downs. Brilliant

A truly wonderful gem of a pub at the foot of the south downs. They are welcoming to weary travelers and are the beating heart of rodmell. It has been suggested the village should be renamed abergevenney and I don't think there would be any resistance from the locals. Virginia Wolf herself may have approved. I would only suggest a reduced menu focusing on homemade fresh locally sourced produce so the kitchen can be elevated to the same status of this truly wonderful pub.

When you serve coffee without sugar, it shows: the little details are missing. But due to their charm, you ignored it: we got the first table as a walk-in after a busy lunch business. It was a mixture of self-service and table service. As a foreigner, it confused me. Ideally, you could get most dishes in smaller portions since I have a gastro-bypass. The fish and chips were delicious.

Hadn't been in for a while , but went for a Sunday Roast. It was delicious! Plenty of it and such a reasonable price! We had a very happy relaxed few hours there with a lovely atmosphere, food and staff.

Service with a smile and the food was good but the carpet hadnt seen a hoover in a while. The toilets were spotless but the door into the ladies was extremely grubby. I would imagine that when it is busy it would have a very good atmosphere but as it was almost empty when we entered (monday afternoon) that would be a guess.

A very warm welcome by all the staff though almost closing time for food, which was excellent and just what was required by a tired and hungry family of cyclists. Many thanks.

Visited with family for their excellent Steak Night night on a Thursday. We all enjoyed the meal and the staff were friendly and customer service excellent. Best to book in advance particularly for the Steak Night which was busy and good value at £15 for a Steak and a drink. The usual good selection of real ales and there are other options re food if you prefer something else on a Thursday. Apparently they have a Burger night and there was talk of a Fish night as well when we visited. Will be back.

Stopped by here for a late Monday lunch (3:30pm). What a pub! Honestly, from the outside we expected an average country pub, but inside surprised us in a good way. Place looks amazing. Food was delicious, we ordered Halloumi burgers and we both agreed they tasted great. Served by friendly staff. Good veggie and vegan options.
