Thattukada - Taste Of Kerala - Toddy Shop - Kallu Shappu in Northampton

Yesterday i visited The Toddy Shop: A Gateway to Kerala Culture with a friend, expecting a great experience like we had a year ago. Unfortunately, it was a complete disaster from start to finish. First, we tried calling multiple times before going, but no one ever picked up. When we arrived, most of the items on the menu were unavailable. What kind of restaurant doesn’t have half of its own menu? The service was beyond terrible. No spoons, forks, or napkins on the table. No water was served. We had to keep asking for basic things, and the staff seemed completely indifferent. The food itself was extremely disappointing—bland, overpriced, and nowhere near the quality we remembered. To make things worse, I couldn’t even find drinks on the menu, and when we asked, they weren’t helpful at all. To top it off, they didn’t even provide an invoice or receipt. The entire experience felt like a scam. I regret coming all the way from London just for this. I will never return and would strongly advise others to avoid this place. It’s a shame how much it has declined!

The worst mutton biriyani I ever had. I don’t know about the other dishes but I tried mutton biriyani it was completely disappointed.

The dish overall was a flop. The worst part was the quality of the rice, which was a major turnoff. As a fan of biryani, I was expecting a lot more. I hope the management takes feedback seriously and works on improving .

This was one of the worst meals I’ve ever had at a restaurant. The frozen parotta tastes better than yours, the appam was too hard, and the curries were overly salty. We wasted five hours and £90 on this disappointment. We ordered several dishes, but none felt worth the money.

Very sorry to say this. This is the worse food i ever had ..everything is salty. We order porotta, appam ,frog fry, beef roast, fish fry ,nonveg meals and toddy as well there is nothing we like . Very bad experience. I wish u guys will look into it .

I traveled 108 miles to this restaurant, only to find the food absolutely horrible. It was a complete waste of time and money, and I wasted my entire day there. If even one of the dishes we ordered was decent, I wouldn’t have bothered writing this review. The food was too salty, hard, and just plain wasteful.

Worst chicken biriyani i ever had

We ordered tavala fry, beef roast, appam & porotta The food was too salty and was not met the expectations. Appam and porotta were very hard not fluffy or felt like fresh. The food quality was too low ,other dishes also was so poor in taste.

I have ordered chicken biriyani and non veg Thalia. The food was cold and the rice was like it was from yesterday's left over and the Thali had no enough curry's. My child got stomach upset and vomiting after this.worst experience.

The atmosphere is warm and inviting, making it a great place to experience Kerala’s culture.kallummakkaya was amazing However, the portion sizes are very small, and service is slow due to only one staff member handling all tables. Despite this, the tasty food and vibrant ambiance make it worth a visit! And also the concept was also appreciated 😍

The food was awesome! We ordered the panam kallu (just as we expected), fried frog legs, deer kandhari, and ayala fish curry with kappa & porotta. Everything was perfect. Great service, and it was so peaceful, probably cuz it was a weekday. Loved the selection of songs in the background. Felt like we were actually in Kerala! A couple of things: some dishes were unavailable, and the bathroom smelled bad. But overall, I'd totally recommend this place.

First I was so excited that finally got here after watching all the reels and vlogs. But unfortunately it wasn't upto my satisfaction. Looks like not to trust these online promotions anymore. Our group had Appam, Chicken curry, Kadala Curry, Chicken Biriyani, Porotta.. non of them was meeting standards. Everything(except Appam) taste like they cooked previous day and microwaved and served to us. When ordering Appam we thought it would be easy making and will be ready quick but Appam was lateblike 30 min after we finish everything. Looks like they were waiting to defroze it . The Service.. wow.. never seen such a worse Service from any kind of restaurant in my whole life. May be they were busy with something because the restaurant was totally empty except us. So we had to wave them to the reception after waiting for 15 min. A Memorable Meal with Room for Improvement Let’s start on a high note—because the food was definitely the star of the show. We spent over £100 and left feeling thoroughly satisfied, thanks to the authentic and delicious flavors. The standout dishes for us were the Kappa, Mussels, Sarbath, and beef—absolutely mouthwatering! However, a few things prevented this from being a truly flawless dining experience. Crab Roast and Fish Tawa Fry Disappointment Two dishes we were excited to try—crab roast and fish tawa fry—were unavailable. Nowhere on the menu did it mention that crab roast required pre-ordering, and the “availability board” didn’t give us a heads-up either. It was like going to a concert only to find out your favorite artist isn’t performing. The Curious Case of the Cold Appam Our appams arrived cold, and upon reordering, we were served what seemed suspiciously like a microwaved appam. While I can’t say for sure, it had that telltale texture of a dish that’s seen more reheats than a TV dinner. Toilet Troubles The facilities were, shall we say, lacking in hospitality. Neither the male nor female toilets had hot water or soap, which was disappointing. It’s hard to feel refreshed when you’re left scrubbing your hands in cold water like a medieval peasant. The Mystery of the Missing Fish Curry While reviewing the bill at home, we noticed we had been charged for a fish curry that never made it to the table. What’s more, the waiter had confirmed that all our items had been served. Perhaps the curry is still waiting patiently in the kitchen, wondering when it will get its moment to shine. The Unsung Hero A special shoutout to the sole waitress who managed to serve the entire restaurant on her own. She was brilliant—quick, efficient, and incredibly hard-working—but we couldn’t help feeling sorry that she didn’t have more support. No one should have to be a one-person army, especially during peak hours. Final Thoughts Overall, it was a good experience, and we truly enjoyed the food. However, there’s plenty of room for improvement in terms of communication, service, and basic amenities. None of this is directed at any individual, but we do hope the owners take this feedback on board. With a few adjustments, they could turn a good dining experience into an exceptional one. We’ll be back for the food—but next time, we’ll double-check about the crab roast and fish tawa fry! PS: We went there on 26/01/25.

Best place for uk malayalies food

We had the fish tawa fry, crab roast with porotta and coconut water . Food was amazing and the fish was phenomenal it was one of the best fish fried we ever had . The girl Shelby who served us was amazing a huge shout out to her as she did everything alone she was very efficient and gave a fantastic service .

I was extremely disappointed with the lack of professionalism and poor customer interaction from the restaurant staff. From the moment we arrived, the staff seemed uninterested and unfriendly. There was no greeting, no smiles, and we felt like we were an inconvenience rather than valued customers. They need to learn to respect the customers. When we asked for recommendations, the server responded curtly and seemed annoyed, offering no helpful suggestions. Throughout the meal, our requests for basic things like water refills or condiments were ignored, and we had to call for attention multiple times. The overall attitude of the staff was dismissive and rude, which completely ruined the dining experience. A warm and welcoming attitude goes a long way in making customers feel comfortable, and unfortunately, this restaurant failed in that regard. I would not recommend it to anyone looking for a pleasant dining experience.

Never got into the restaurant to try their food hence why the 1 star review for food and service. According to their opening times on their website and Google it says 12pm - 9pm. Me and my friend went to the restaurant at 12:30pm to find it closed, we waited for about 5 mins when 2 of their staff arrived. They had told us to wait 30 - 45mins as they arrived late to open the restaurant. I had travelled all the way from Stoke-on-Trent to try their food and experience their flavours. Had to pay for street parking which is only valid for 2 hours to later find out they will only open late. Since the parking is only valid for 2 hours, had to leave from there to another restaurant. The way the staff told us they will be taking time was rather rude and not welcoming at all. If you can not open your restaurant as per the advertised opening hours, this is a big concern! Please fix this. Left with a disappointment.

On our way back from London to Nottingham, we rerouted through Northampton specifically to try Toddy Shop Restaurant, inspired by numerous reels and celebrity blogger reviews. Unfortunately, our experience did not live up to the hype. The restaurant's board stated opening hours from 12 pm, but when we arrived at 12:40 pm, the doors were still closed. We waited another 19 minutes in the freezing -3°C weather, with our young children in tow, before a staff member informed us that they would open in 30 minutes. This was quite frustrating as we were left with no choice but to change our plans due to the cold and the waiting time. I urge the management to either update the timings on their Google page or adhere to the posted schedule. This would not only improve customer experience but also save visitors from unnecessary inconveniences, such as the parking fee we had to pay despite not dining there. Overall, it was a disappointing experience, and we hope the restaurant addresses these issues for future patrons.

For me it was my first time. Being Italian I really didn't know what to expect, but the food was spectacular. Not that much spicy, which is good. And I also tried the famous toddy. Sweet but not a lot, and very nice. I went there with my husband and some friends. The prices are also very affordable and their position in the city is also another strong point.

This is the second time me and friends visit the restaurant with lot of expectations.But its spoiled , kappa biriyani (beef) its cost £11.50 ,and the portion of beef in kappa is very less , 2 ,3 very tiny pieces. And honestly I am not recommend the Kappa biriyani ! pacha malayalathil parajal Udaayippu !!!biriyani.

Horrific. That is my experience summed up. We were not welcomed in and had to wait for a while to be given a seat. Also, the atmosphere and ambience was so bad including the seats which were extremely uncomfortable as they were hard wooden benches. Then onto the food it was not good at all it was very mediocre we ordered many things including seabrim fry which was the most disappointing of all. It had no flavour at all it just seemed the put the marinade on and fried it. Additionally, we drove over 4 hours it wasn't worth any of the hype at all.

Worst experience ever. We are from kerala and wanted to have some authentic kerala food. However all the dishes arrived at different times and everything was basically cold. We waited for atleast 1 hr and it ended up being a huge letdown. The quality was abysmal. I am a proud malayali and this is not how kerala food should be presented to the masses especially staples like porotta and appam. Thumps down.

I visited Thattukada for the first time. The food was reasonable and felt a kind of home cooked taste. Kallu-Toddy, was okay too-mild taste with less fiz compared to the one in Kerala. But you can’t except the same here as they import. Still enjoyed. The biggest negative I felt was poor customer service. The time we visited was as not peak, not sure if it was that, but up on arrival there were a group of lads-waiters talking each other not even looking at us to welcome nor guiding where to sit . Shocked to see this kind of customer service in the UK. Cleanness is an issue in the toilet. Okay for a once in a life time visit.

I recently visited this restaurant and ordered appam, beef, ghee rice, and chicken curry. The experience was extremely disappointing, mainly due to the poor service and subpar food quality. First, the food was served completely cold. When I pointed this out, the server insisted it was warm, but when asked to feel it himself, he finally acknowledged the issue and promised to have it fixed. Unfortunately, nothing improved. While the appam was at least warm, the chicken curry was as cold as if it had come straight from the refrigerator, and the ghee rice was also cold and didn’t even taste like it was made with actual ghee. The butter or "ghee" topping was warm, but the rice itself was not. Worse, the chicken curry tasted stale and cold. When we gave feedback, the server didn’t show any concern or even acknowledge the comments. He seemed uninterested and dismissive, standing there with a smirk. Based on his interactions with other staff, he appeared to be the owner, which made his attitude even more disheartening. This place is far from offering authentic Kerala food—it felt like an insult to Kerala cuisine and other respectable Kerala restaurants. If they intend to focus on only serving alcohol (or prioritising customers who buy alcohol), they should be transparent about it with customers. Please do not waste your money here. The food is a disservice to your taste buds, and the experience is likely to leave you frustrated.

Sooooo bad !!! Don’t have words to explain beware

Not a good place to eat. Staff lazy and food is smelly and seems like they cooked it a week earlier. Chicken curry was finished at 7:PM Friday night. Looks like either the owner doesn’t care about what his restaurant is serving or the management is lazy. I believe this one will close soon. No stars, 3rd class restaurant with cheap vulgar songs playing in the background.

We visited this restaurant on 19/10/24. We ordered a variety of dishes, including vellayappam, but it didn’t feel fresh at all. When we inquired about it, the staff confirmed that it had been prepared earlier and kept in a casserole, heating it up as per order. We were very disappointed with the quality of the food as We felt that much of the food was not freshly cooked. Since we arrived quite late, many of the options were unavailable. We drove a long distance to get there, but we couldn’t order anything we really wanted to eat. We chose this restaurant after seeing several promotional videos, but we didn't experience any of the things they highlighted in the reels.

Extremely Disappointing Experience I was thoroughly disappointed with my recent visit. The cleanliness was subpar, warranting a 0/10.washrooms are a disaster. The high prices did not match the average quality of food. Unfortunately, I would not recommend this establishment and will not be returning.

Ordered vegetable thali, you can't say its vegetable thali only with one vegetable that was cabbage. Other than that pickle, papadam and moru curry, nothing else. Not value for money at all. At least should have given sambar or dhal or some other vegetables also

Can’t believe how a restaurant with 4.3 stars can have such a service. Feels like the comments are faked. Today we drove 80miles (one way) to visit the shop after reading the boasted reviews. And to be honest we felt completely ripped off. A non-veg thali costing £15 has very little portion of chicken curry, beef fry and mussels fry along with basic cabbage, pickle and yogurt curry which is used to eat Rice. No desert provided which any Keralite would have expected. Being a Keralite, we know how our thali looks. A veg thali has only got the above basic costing a whooping £7. Chicken Biriyani was okay. They did not have a lot of dishes that I would have wanted to eat. I will never return to this one again and wont recommend to my friends eithers.

Great food and authentic taste...

We were in such a excitement but it was totally flop. We order kappa, meen kari, potti fry, frog and quail fry plus one jar kallu. I asked them and the guy told they import from Sri Lanka and palm toddy fromGhana. However the appearance of toddy was bit different. Looks similar like gruel juice something. Very thick not any smell of normal toddy. However when it tasted I felt it was not original and it is fake. I sometimes try with cocunut water and add some sugar and yeast. It was the similar taste. So guys don’t go there to drink the toddy from Sri Lanka, the same you can make at home costing you £1 or £2 . One glass they cgarge £6.00! One jar consists of 4 glass would be £22.00?. The food except potti was below average. You wont get porotta fresh. They heat the frozen porotta!!. What a joke. I bought one bottle toddy for my friends. None of them liked it. I kept it one side and next day you can see some white and black colour something laying down the bottle. For commercial use they won’t get that much of cocunut water. They also not importing original toddy from Sri Lanka. May be importing palm toddy that can’t consider as cocunut toddy what we get back in Kerala. Next option is to mix with the powder and make it. This type toddy is selling in most toddy shops in Kerala. The original toddy from the cocunut tree is not available. These chemical is very dangerous and regular consumption would cause abdominal cancer. My request to the owner of thattukada please don’t cheat public and you have to tell them how do you prepare this toddy and statutory warning as well. You have to display the certificate from the council that you are selling pure toddy. Otherwise don’t make others fool. The frog and quail fry was not up to the mark. It was not properly cooked and the taste was ugly. They I think used deep fry and the meat was not cooked properly. I won’t recommend anyone visit this restaurant in the future. Sorry guys.

It was a waste of money. We traveled a long way to get to this hotel and bought almost everything on the menu. The palm wine just tasted like sugar water. While we loved the assistance from staff, the food was overhyped and not worth the expense. If there was an option to give zero stars, we would. We expected something better. They call it a toddy bar, but everything tasted like nothing.

I visited thattukada with my friends today after seeing influencer reviews, eager to try some authentic Kerala cuisine. Unfortunately, it turned out to be the worst meal we've ever had. We ordered ayala fry, kingfish fry, beef roast, beef fry, and crab fry, but everything was really disappointing. The only dish we somewhat enjoyed was the crab masala, everything else was incredibly disappointing. The kallu was particularly disappointing. I hope the quality of the food and the ambiance of the place improves soon.

I finally visited the restaurant today after being intrigued by Instagram videos and craving traditional Kerala cuisine. Unfortunately, the food was underwhelming and lacked the extraordinary flavors I expected. None of the dishes were served hot, and the boti was particularly disappointing. The service was also lacking, as the waiter didn't check on us once, which is standard practice. The restaurant was also quite warm. While it's an option for Kerala food, don't expect an exceptional culinary experience.

We ordered very basic chor moru cabbage thoran pickle and papadum , the quantity of the curry is not sufficient for that portion of rice. The server just came to take orders and give the food. Never checked again if needed anything or enquire how the food was. The ambience is very average and does not give feel of a toddy shop. However , we also ordered the king fish fry and appam which was good. Not worth the hype

We had Chicken Biriyani , porotta and beef. The prices are affordable, porotta is small , but it is priced only £1.50. Beef roast was lovely priced at £8.50. Comparing to other Indian restaurants in Scotland, Kallu shappu has reasonable prices and the food was also okay. I didn’t like the biriyani very much as we can cook better biriyani from home. The beef roast and porotta was exceptional. Idk , We felt it exceptional may be because we came all the way from Inverness and were hungry a bit.

The food is tasty and is plenty for four people. The fish is fresh and spicy, which we wanted. Mutton and chicken need more spice. Plain Kallu is good. Munthiri Kallu is a rip-off. They just added Munthiri flavour to normal Kallu. £1 more for the flavour is a rip-off. It would have been the same price. Friendly staff. The walking area was spacious, though the restaurant was full. Not a place for Vegetarians. They won't provide anything other than the items from the menu. The toilet can be more clean. The total bill for food for four, four glasses of Kallu and a bear, was £120. Not a restaurant for vegetarians. Zero options on the menu,

Most lovely place to go, so welcoming

The toddy, prawn biryani and fried frog legs were exceptional, and the afternoon overall was lovely. However, the biggest letdown of the afternoon was the parking availablity. There was no parking in front of the shop and the nearest location where we could park was quite far from the actual shop.

Kappa and fish curry were great. The beef fry was good and the appam felt rather sweet. Lot of Kerala cultural references in food and interior. They even have the manavatti liquor (didn't try it though). Vegetarians beware, I could find any vegetarian options in the menu. Something the management can improve upon.

We visited Thattikada this month with parents. Travelled all the way from London , but totally disappointed. Kerala Porotta tasted like frozen porotta - 3/5 Beef varattiyath was literally full of oil - 2/5. Appam was too sweet, lots of sugar - 2/5 Kappa had a pale taste and less quantity - 2/5 We were so excited to order Crab - but that was the worst preparation - Tasted like rotten crab.1/5. We had given order for biriyani and after waiting for 30 minutes, saying Biriyani is finished . Atleast should be aware what’s available in the kitchen before taking the order. The only good thing about this place is the ambience. Kerala Hut is far better this one. So would give total of 2 star out of 5.

Quite disappointed from the fact that, we took extra effort to add a stop at Northampton to visit this place following the reviews by the bloggers. It wasn’t worth it. Little to offer on the menu, not even a single vegetarian curry option for a family who compromised to visit this place for rest of the non veg eaters. Chicken fry lacked any flavours even though was fried deep. The chicken biriyani seemed average- good. Nothing special to comment. Not worth a drive from far south or north of the UK.

A very good "typical" kerala themed and styled Thattu kada (street side small shop). All foods on the menu are South Indian. They also have Kallu or toddy. Mallus will understand it 😉 Service was quick as well.
