Can’t believe how a restaurant with 4.3 stars can have such a service. Feels like the comments are faked. Today we drove 80miles (one way) to visit the shop after reading the boasted reviews. And to be honest we felt completely ripped off. A non-veg thali costing £15 has very little portion of chicken curry, beef fry and mussels fry along with basic cabbage, pickle and yogurt curry which is used to eat Rice. No desert provided which any Keralite would have expected. Being a Keralite, we know how our thali looks. A veg thali has only got the above basic costing a whooping £7. Chicken Biriyani was okay. They did not have a lot of dishes that I would have wanted to eat. I will never return to this one again and wont recommend to my friends eithers.

We were in such a excitement but it was totally flop. We order kappa, meen kari, potti fry, frog and quail fry plus one jar kallu. I asked them and the guy told they import from Sri Lanka and palm toddy fromGhana. However the appearance of toddy was bit different. Looks similar like gruel juice something. Very thick not any smell of normal toddy. However when it tasted I felt it was not original and it is fake. I sometimes try with cocunut water and add some sugar and yeast. It was the similar taste. So guys don’t go there to drink the toddy from Sri Lanka, the same you can make at home costing you £1 or £2 . One glass they cgarge £6.00! One jar consists of 4 glass would be £22.00?. The food except potti was below average. You wont get porotta fresh. They heat the frozen porotta!!. What a joke. I bought one bottle toddy for my friends. None of them liked it. I kept it one side and next day you can see some white and black colour something laying down the bottle. For commercial use they won’t get that much of cocunut water. They also not importing original toddy from Sri Lanka. May be importing palm toddy that can’t consider as cocunut toddy what we get back in Kerala. Next option is to mix with the powder and make it. This type toddy is selling in most toddy shops in Kerala. The original toddy from the cocunut tree is not available. These chemical is very dangerous and regular consumption would cause abdominal cancer. My request to the owner of thattukada please don’t cheat public and you have to tell them how do you prepare this toddy and statutory warning as well. You have to display the certificate from the council that you are selling pure toddy. Otherwise don’t make others fool. The frog and quail fry was not up to the mark. It was not properly cooked and the taste was ugly. They I think used deep fry and the meat was not cooked properly. I won’t recommend anyone visit this restaurant in the future. Sorry guys.

I visited thattukada with my friends today after seeing influencer reviews, eager to try some authentic Kerala cuisine. Unfortunately, it turned out to be the worst meal we've ever had. We ordered ayala fry, kingfish fry, beef roast, beef fry, and crab fry, but everything was really disappointing. The only dish we somewhat enjoyed was the crab masala, everything else was incredibly disappointing. The kallu was particularly disappointing. I hope the quality of the food and the ambiance of the place improves soon.

It was a waste of money. We traveled a long way to get to this hotel and bought almost everything on the menu. The palm wine just tasted like sugar water. While we loved the assistance from staff, the food was overhyped and not worth the expense. If there was an option to give zero stars, we would. We expected something better. They call it a toddy bar, but everything tasted like nothing.

Our experience with Thattukada was quite disappointed. We are not satisfied with the quality of food and the taste of food.

I finally visited the restaurant today after being intrigued by Instagram videos and craving traditional Kerala cuisine. Unfortunately, the food was underwhelming and lacked the extraordinary flavors I expected. None of the dishes were served hot, and the boti was particularly disappointing. The service was also lacking, as the waiter didn't check on us once, which is standard practice. The restaurant was also quite warm. While it's an option for Kerala food, don't expect an exceptional culinary experience.

Good place to hang out and have Kerala style dishes.

We ordered very basic chor moru cabbage thoran pickle and papadum , the quantity of the curry is not sufficient for that portion of rice. The server just came to take orders and give the food. Never checked again if needed anything or enquire how the food was. The ambience is very average and does not give feel of a toddy shop. However , we also ordered the king fish fry and appam which was good. Not worth the hype

We had Chicken Biriyani , porotta and beef. The prices are affordable, porotta is small , but it is priced only £1.50. Beef roast was lovely priced at £8.50. Comparing to other Indian restaurants in Scotland, Kallu shappu has reasonable prices and the food was also okay. I didn’t like the biriyani very much as we can cook better biriyani from home. The beef roast and porotta was exceptional. Idk , We felt it exceptional may be because we came all the way from Inverness and were hungry a bit.

The food is tasty and is plenty for four people. The fish is fresh and spicy, which we wanted. Mutton and chicken need more spice. Plain Kallu is good. Munthiri Kallu is a rip-off. They just added Munthiri flavour to normal Kallu. £1 more for the flavour is a rip-off. It would have been the same price. Friendly staff. The walking area was spacious, though the restaurant was full. Not a place for Vegetarians. They won't provide anything other than the items from the menu. The toilet can be more clean. The total bill for food for four, four glasses of Kallu and a bear, was £120. Not a restaurant for vegetarians. Zero options on the menu,

The toddy, prawn biryani and fried frog legs were exceptional, and the afternoon overall was lovely. However, the biggest letdown of the afternoon was the parking availablity. There was no parking in front of the shop and the nearest location where we could park was quite far from the actual shop.

Kappa and fish curry were great. The beef fry was good and the appam felt rather sweet. Lot of Kerala cultural references in food and interior. They even have the manavatti liquor (didn't try it though). Vegetarians beware, I could find any vegetarian options in the menu. Something the management can improve upon.

I went there with high expectations after seeing lots of insta promo videos. But the dine in experience was quite disappointing. An average kerala restaurant. I don't think they are really putting any efforts to satisfy customer expectations. Anyway may be in coming years, they might improve.

We visited Thattikada this month with parents. Travelled all the way from London , but totally disappointed. Kerala Porotta tasted like frozen porotta - 3/5 Beef varattiyath was literally full of oil - 2/5. Appam was too sweet, lots of sugar - 2/5 Kappa had a pale taste and less quantity - 2/5 We were so excited to order Crab - but that was the worst preparation - Tasted like rotten crab.1/5. We had given order for biriyani and after waiting for 30 minutes, saying Biriyani is finished . Atleast should be aware what’s available in the kitchen before taking the order. The only good thing about this place is the ambience. Kerala Hut is far better this one. So would give total of 2 star out of 5.

Quite disappointed from the fact that, we took extra effort to add a stop at Northampton to visit this place following the reviews by the bloggers. It wasn’t worth it. Little to offer on the menu, not even a single vegetarian curry option for a family who compromised to visit this place for rest of the non veg eaters. Chicken fry lacked any flavours even though was fried deep. The chicken biriyani seemed average- good. Nothing special to comment. Not worth a drive from far south or north of the UK.

A very good "typical" kerala themed and styled Thattu kada (street side small shop). All foods on the menu are South Indian. They also have Kallu or toddy. Mallus will understand it 😉 Service was quick as well.

Worst Dining experience. Spend nearly £30 for food cooked from frozen specially Appam. Traditional Appam should be thin and crispy around the edges with soft fluffy center. The Appam you served was so fluffy around the edges and not even warm. Competition???? I don't even live/work in Northampton.With such terrible attitude and service I don't think you need any competitor. You quality of food speak for itself.

Terrible experience. 3/5 people who went there ended up with horrible stomach issues (all three ate same food) We travelled from London to try this new restaurant but most items on menu were unavailable at 6pm. Food was cold and very less quantity for the price charged.

We visited this place and we are so disappointed with the visit.The only attracting factor was the availability of Toddy.The food was of very below average standard.Customer service was really good, but it cannot be compensated by the quality of food.They served frozen crab in the crab roast and never bothered to come back to us when we reported to them.I will never visit this place again and I will not recommend this place to any of my friends.

The Staff is very unwelcoming. I dont want to comment more specific about the food which is below than average. You could buy some ready-made Kerala masalas and cook even better than them.

Food is below average. Most items are too salty. Frog legs are miniature, and the place stinks of urine. Hand wash inside restroom is just water, no soap. Hygiene outside is bad. Could the kitchen be a disaster?

Many things are very expensive. For example 6.50 for two spoonfuls of kappa. At the same time, biryani costs only 8.50. So buy biryani and skip the rest of the items. Tofu is very sweet. That too can be avoided

Delicious Biriyani, Idi-irachi-poli, Chicken Curry: extremely delicious. We are pleased with their service and spacious setting.

Had the normal kerala rice with fish fry. Kerala rice comes with Cabbage, Moruchar & Pappadom. Fish fry was the Indian Mackerel. The lunch was great and fish fry had the authentic spices and tasted like home.

It is the first time in UK I had a really delicious food

I went to thattukada to taste the newly launched alcohol brand manavatty. I tried their spiced rum first and as the name suggest it was an explosion of flavor. I also tried their pale ale along with deer kanthari. It was amazing and I should definitely say the deer kanthari was exquisite. It's a must try a long with other items on the weekend menu.

Biryani is good. Rest are ok to be below average. Everything except Biriyani was a bit salty as well. Porotta is just about ok but nowhere near the authentic Kerala porotta. The chicken fry was too dry and not even lemon supplied. Fish curry was just ok, nothing to be excited about. Kappa wasn't good and no where near the authentic Kerala dish. We went on a Sunday, at around 6:00pm (where the shop is open until 10:00pm), and they could hardly have anything that we wanted from the menu. We ended up buying what they have and that too they didn't have enough quantity for what we wanted. So we had to go for a mix and match. We also noticed a other group of families coming and still they were invited to be seated (although they are don't have enough for people who are alread in) and they too seems to have been struggling to place order. The men's toilet was pathetic with a long steel urinary channel that made me wonder if I am in the UK or a low quality bus station comfort station somewhere in the outskirts of Kerala. Two of the wash basin was full and stuck, and made me feel vomit and yuck !! If this restaurant was in Kerala, it would have got no attention. Below average compared to the restaurants in Kerala. Did not try Toddy. So I cannot comment about it. In summary for me, I wouldn't go there again for food. I can make much more delicious food at home. Even porotta, I can make much better and fluffy onea using the frozen ones we get. If I have to travel fromwhere to reach this place, I wo UK would nevever recommend it to myself.

Recently introduced NON veg thali is with prawns, Mussels, chicken/beef, cabbage is one of the best hit of thattukada. Fish tawa with the special marination is very good. Weekend special like Rabbit roast and Duck curry is a must try.

Having tried many biryanis, can easily say that this is the best prawn biryani I had after I came to UK. Generous portion, great taste and always fresh. Everything I have ever ordered from here has been exceptional. Highly recommended! I also had the opportunity to meet John, the distiller and owner. He is a kind and humorous host who describes how his clearly loved business operates. I also got to sample some of the new alcoholic beverages he made, including Manavatty rum and Manavatty vattu.

One of the best service I’ve received while being there staff were really nice and I ordered Porota and beef roast. That dish was fantastic and I would definitely go there again and again just to eat the porota and beef. Definitely the best South Indian restaurant I’ve been to.

Visited Thattukada during a recent visit to the UK and was surprised to see a Toddy shop themed restaurant in the UK, the food was authentic and delicious and the toddy was fresh. Very impressed with the concept and the quality of sourced toddy!! They also recently came out with an alcohol line called “Manavatty” which we had the chance to try, we tried their dark spiced rum and loved it! Will definitely be visiting them again if/when we return to the UK!

Recently I visited Thattukada with my friends, I have tried the frog legs fry, kappa, kallummakkaya, chicken curry, meals and some other food items as well. I never experienced such an authentic Kerala food taste in the UK, all the food items were delicious. All the staff members are so friendly and kind. We got the opportunity to meet Mr. John Xavier, the owner of Thattukada restaurant, he is such a humble human being, very inspiring and motivating personality. Thattukada is a MUST visit place for people who love/miss Kerala food. I love to visit this restaurant again with my friends.

"This was by far the worst beef roast I've ever experienced. I ordered what was supposed to be beef roast, but instead received something resembling curry. The meat was undercooked and tough to chew. Not only that, but the portion size was incredibly small for the hefty £8.50 price tag. Disappointing doesn't even begin to describe it. I wouldn't recommend this dish to anyone."

I was looking forward to eating here after seeing on social media but was slightly disappointed. We were travelling down from Leeds back to London and planned to stop here for food due to the hype. Firstly there was no aroma of food when you walk into the restaurant, which I feel is important, and made me wonder if the food is cooked on the premises. The bench like tables was good as it gave the whole Kallu shop feel to it. The kallu/toddy was good but the food unfortunately not what I expected. Apart from the beef roast, everything else lacked in flavour, the chicken fry didn’t seem as though it was freshly made ..maybe it was but I felt it was just re heated and lost its crispness you associate with fried food. The kappa was also quite dry and didn’t taste authentic. The service was good and the staff were very friendly.

Delicious Food and Excellent service

My recent visit to Thattukada in Northampton left me with mixed feelings. While the ambience was quite okay, I found the overall experience to be rather average. One aspect that disappointed me was the freshness of the food preparation. Unfortunately, some of the dishes seemed to lack the freshness and quality I expected. This detracted from the overall dining experience and left me feeling somewhat unsatisfied. Additionally, I found that there wasn’t much variety in the menu offerings. The limited selection made it difficult to find something that truly appealed to my taste preferences. I would have appreciated a wider range of options to choose from. Parking was also a problem during my visit. Finding a spot nearby proved to be quite challenging, adding a level of inconvenience to the dining experience. Overall, while Thattukada in Northampton offers an okay ambience, there are areas for improvement, particularly in terms of food freshness, variety, and parking availability.
