Edited: 6 years later and this place just isn't the same. We went last week only to find all pork has been removed from the menu. This is very disappointing. The sushi has also been changed, there are some very unusual combinations. It seems like it's been taken over and it's just not Japanese anymore. The pork ramen was one of the best dishes on the menu. A Japanese restaurant should not be Halal. I think we will have to find somewhere new. The best place in Cardiff for sushi and Japanese food. Friendly staff, great environment. We've been going there for 10 years. Just be aware that it's a small kitchen and your food will not come out at once if there's more than 2 of you eating. The only problem here is that some people will have finished their food before others even receive theirs.

Came here on a Saturday about 2pm, it wasn't too packed and quickly quieted down during our meal. The service was good, we walked in and waited not even a minute before a lovely lady came to us. She was very helpful in giving advice on what kind of sushi to try for the first time (I've been here previously to try their chicken bento box but never their sushi). Me and my partner both had bento boxes along with sushi for us to try, and a small bowl of miso soup accompanying our meal. I found the bento box to be quite nice and very filling, as I'm new to sushi all I can really say it was a delight to try and I'll definitely give it a go again. Their miso soup was very creamy and lovely in my opinion. My partner stated he also enjoyed all of his meal and was very stuffed after it also. Update 27/1/25: Went there this past weekend, they gave away our reserved seats even though we booked, they didn't give us cutlery/chop sticks, napkins or placemats and they forgot/ got my friends order wrong. The staff were very apologetic but it has made us hesitant to return, despite the food being delicious.

So disappointing. Booked for a birthday dinner with friends. Ordered 5 mains, no starters. Food came in dribs and drabs over the course of 1 hour 15 mins. Mine didn't come at all, got the wrong meal delivered. So, I told the waitress to cancel mine. As I didn't want to wait any longer. Will not return, honesty didn't seem the waitress who took our order wrote down our order, as she came over 2/3 times to confirm everything, yet I still had the wrong food. No cutlery/chopsticks given or napkins. This was a birthday treat, so it's even more disappointing.

Went here on a whim but so glad we did. It’s cute and has a nice atmosphere inside. The waitress we had was so lovely and made us feel welcome and taken care of. I highly recommend the dragon salmon maki - it was amazing. Also, really nice to find a good sushi place which is also halal. Really looking forward to coming here again!

One of the best Japanese restaurants that I have been to in a while, great selection of food to choose from, and the portions sizes were generous.

This is my favourite Japanese restaurant in Cardiff. The food is delicious and the staff are super friendly. I’m very fond of their udon noodles but they have a great selection of sushi, ramen, noodles, bento boxes and more. They also have an allergy ingredient guide if you have dietary needs :)

came in tonight with my boyfriend for a sushi date, we’ve been coming here since we were first years at uni and this did not disappoint! the food is delicious and reasonably priced, and the service is fabulous too. our waitress, nadeeka, was incredibly friendly and got out food to us in reasonable timing. i recommend this place so much!

Lovely atmosphere and fantastic food! Service was exceptional and very polite. Food portions were also very generous. We had the donbori chicken, the yaki udon, and the avocado maki rolls. Everything was really tasty, especially the donbori chicken! Definitely recommend the place.

Amazing customer service, a lovely bubbly, friendly and smiley waitress who tended to us and asked how the food was and made sure everything was ok. We ordered edamame, fries, two kinds of sushi maki - spider and tempura. I really enjoyed the starters and tempura sushi. Just a tip if possible to reduce waste is maybe have soy sauce on tables and allow customers to put how much or how little. Otherwise a sweet Family owned restaurant that I wish the best for you and all the success.

An unfortunate disappointment. Don't be fooled by the high reviews; they were clearly made before the restaurant changed hands. I was initially excited since I'd heard such good things, but those were for somewhere that's clearly gone. There's a reason it's always empty. I'd steer clear if I were you. Food's fine, but horribly overpriced. Atmosphere is non-existent, and the service was lacking. It's a Zombie Shop. A corpse of a far more successful restaurant that's changed everything but its outwards appearance and it's prices.

Food is excellent, and it’s never busy

Second visit to Tenkaichi and I can say I'll be returning again. Despite being quiet and small, the food is exceptional. For those wanting to "Try it all" the bento boxes are truly the way to go, and the sushi never fails to be exceptional. Exceptional Quality, Reasonable Price, Exceptional Sushi!

Went in there unexpectedly tonight. Went with my partner and as soon as entering we were welcomed with a warm greeting from the staff. Food was better than we expected it to be and the it was a rice dish forgot the name was delicious and highly recommend. Maki roll was also tasty. I would highly recommend this place. One of the best Japanese food places in Cardiff. Everything halal which is always a bonus ! Thank you staff Tenkaichi and keep up the good work !

Prices do not reflect the food quality and atmosphere. Having read the older reviews we were expecting much more.

Food as always - exceptional! I love the veggie donburi (what do they put in that sauce😮‍💨 so sweet but so good!) Ramen dishes are also a big favourite especially the ones with the dumplings in. The service is great. Always welcoming and always very helpful with any questions you may have. I recommend highly!

Good food and service, but oddly noisy

Went here for dinner with my bestie because the other place we originally wanted to go to was closed but omg I’m so glad we ended up eating here! We both shared the bento box, maki rolls, ebi tempura and edamame and everything was so fresh and delicious. Such a good price point too. Our server was so lovely, I think her name was Namira (I’m so sorry if that’s wrong) but thank you so much for taking care of us!

I was very pleased with my experience at Tenkaichi. I was happy to find that all the chicken and beef options are halal, including a wide selection of ramens, noodles, sushi, gyoza, and much more. Not only was the food amazing and nicely served, the staff were friendly and welcoming. I rarely find such amazing service. Would highly recommend this place and would definitely come again.

One of the best Japansese restaurants. Every dish is amazing and the atmosphere and kindness of staff is amazing. Great vegetarian and vegan options as well which are cheaper than the meat ones.

Me and my Family absolutely loved our first time experience We were greeted and hosted in such a welcoming manner with upmost respect They let us take our time choosing what to order and helped steer us in the right direction based on our tastebuds Every single food item came with the best quality! I mean we havent tasted sushi this good! Ever Also the chicken katsu curry was amazing! Wow The fries were a big hit with my daughters alongside the sushi ..we chose to get a variety platter all were so perfect looking and fresh The octopus balls were intriguing at first but ofcourse we loved every mouthful We will definitely come here again for the welcoming homelike hosting from each family member And the too quality food The children loved the atmosphere and food win win for us all

It’s no longer Japanese food, the portion sizes were generous, the family that are running it were lovely & we had a nice meal. The only thing I would mention is that the restaurant may have changed hands as it was noticeably different. Prices have remained similar to before but we were served what tasted like HPbrown sauce with the pumpkin which doesn’t seem right. The beef noodles were rather tasty & the rice was also great, so no complaints. Just very different cuisine to the last time we ate here.

We had a ramen and a katsu chicken curry with a beer and a Japanese soft drink. Service was friendly and courteous, food was delicious and portions very filling. Will be popping in again for sure.

Lived in Cardiff for uni and every time I’m back in the city I go out of my way to come back here for dinner - beautifully presented, proper fresh seafood, and wonderfully attentive service. Thanks for another great dinner!

I ordered a katsu chicken udon, the just simply put the fried chicken inside the soup, the fried chicken is supposed to be krispy, but the way they serve it just make it soggy and taste awful. My friend ordered a Unagi bento, and there’s bone inside that I almost chocked myself.

The color of the tuna is dark, I can’t believe you can put that in front of customers And the Donburi is too sweet, I ordered a ebi katsu bonburi, the fried skin is softened and I can barely eat any shrimp inside. The rice is way too sweet that I have to add soy sauce and wasabi inside so that I can put it in my mouth.

Wonderful experience with Japanese food. This was our monthly Cardiff global food adventure and we are very much happy, especially the service was excellent.

Took my 8 year old daughter for her birthday along with her 9 year old brother. The lady was so kind and made a huge fuss of my daughter and turned our sushi platter into a happy birthday sushi platter and also gave my daughter a free birthday mochi with candles and sang her happy birthday! So kind and my daughter absolutely loved it. We will definitely be back.

Lovely warm welcome as we came in. Drinks served quickly then time given for us to peruse the menu. Delicious fresh food, well presented which we enjoyed in an unhurried atmosphere.

A lovely welcome at the door. We were given plenty of time to study the menu whilst drinking jasmine tea. The food was fresh, well presented and very tasty. A calm, quiet atmosphere at lunch time. I need a return visit to sample more of the menu.

Popped in for a takeaway order as online options for restaurant was poor. I regret doing so. Was incredibly disappointing. Opted for the Bento box. £19 for a small portion of rice, piece of katsu chicken, 2 small gyozas, 3 small kani maki (which was imitation crab and I couldn't see it on the menu outside of the Bento. Was disappointed but understanding I couldn't change the type of maki) very basic salad and a miso soup. Lot of stuff you normally get included with meals for free. No sauce or dressing for anything so was all quite dry. And plain for the most part. Did come with ginger and wasabi which was fresh and nice to be fair. All in all though terrible value for money. Good quality was fine but just wasnt good enough (or portioned enough) to justify the cost. Hope the sushi is better because the Bento box certainly wasn't worth it

We visited as a family. 3 children aged 11-15. We eat at Wagamamas but fancies a change. This place was awesome. The sushi was fantastic. We really loved the maki rolls and hosomaki. The kids slurped through the ramen and we had really nice yaki. I would thoroughly recommend it - we will be back. Only thing that let it down was the white wine wasn’t very chilled. Maybe we should have stuck to beer?

Genuinely the worst dining experience of my life. Wouldn’t recommend to my worst enemy, food was awful and the service even worse.

We were looking for a place to eat in Cardiff, and we’ll definitely come back. The sushi were excellent and fresh. The spicy beef ramen was delicious. The service was great and quick enough, even though the chef had to deal with my boyfriend’s allergies and said it would take longer. And the staff were very kind.

Worst Japanese food in cardiff by a long shot. Very poorly made sushi (falling apart and rice not fresh or perhaps cheap?) rubbery ingredients and terrible ramen.

food was nice , service was a little poor, as we was asked what we wanted before we was given any menus, food took a while it wasnt that busy. very dull atmosphere you all sit pretty much at ok long table with the odd few tables at the side . not a romantic restaurant , ok for lunch with friends I suppose

This restaurant is by a very long distance the best Japanese restaurant on the whole of Cardiff if not Wales. I live a half hour away so i don't frequent it as often as I would like but for me it's more than worth the trip every once in a while. The char siau chahan and spider maki is to die for. Hats off to a consistently excellent establishment

Well presented and very clean this wonderful sushi bar is a hidden gem on city road. Service is swift and friendly with staff happy to answer questions if you're not very familiar with sushi. Warm sake is delightful along side the tasty and varied food. I usually take a bento box for easy variety with a few extra sushi but have also tried various rice bowls which are so well filled I've never quite finished one! Highly recommended

This is such a cute little sushi bar perfect for celebrating a birthday with my teenager who requested going out for sushi! I opted for the prawn and mango sushi it was very fresh and delicious 😋 we will definitely be going again!

Ramen tasted and looked horrendous. I don't know how can you serve something like this. They didn't even bother to roll sushi properly so it was falling apart. Rice was overcooked. No check back from any of the staff. £55 pounds for 2 inedible soups and really bad sushi. Sadly a waste of money and our evening.

I have walked past this place so many times and always gone to the chains in the centre of Cardiff. I took my Mum here yesterday and I will not be going back to the ones in town. The food is incredible!

Delicious gluten free Japanese food! They had menus with everything GF marked making it super easy to order, and all was fresh and delicious. They even have GF soy sauce! Will be back, although reservations needed.

The food was average at best, no real ambience of the restaurant. We booked the table online after seeing gorgeous food, arrived on time we was quickly ushered to our table and given a menu by a very polite young lady. We was offered a drink quickly and then asked was we ready to order, we politely asked for 5minutes to browse the rather large menu. I should add the chefs were quite rude to the young waitress and shouted at her infront of us, we ordered kimchee and he told her he didnt have it, she didnt quite hear him and he shouted at her, not the sort of thing you should be doing with diners there. We changed the kimchee for squid, they didnt have the deep fried squid but could do salt and pepper squid instead which was fine. The food arrived and it was very averge didnt realy taste of much garlic, ginger essential japanese seasoning, the whole order come to £65 everything was very rushed, the restaurant was freezing cold, the chefs were not authentic japanese and we would not be returning.

Went there whilst waiting for the train. Service was good. The food is mouth-watering and scrumptouous. I wish we have this resto in London.

Went here to try the ramen 🍜 and although service was good and the place was clean and looked nice the flavour of the noodles were far below par, I had the Char Siu (Roast Pork) and my partner had the Vegan option. While there was plenty of Pork and garnish was nice there was an overwhelming amount of seaweed in both dishes so avoid if you don't like the flavour of seaweed. The broth in the roast pork was horrible think one part soy sauce to two parts hot water, that was the flavour. It wasn't enjoyable at all and felt like drinking / eating a bowl of soy sauce, egg noddle were not the right type for this broth and while I normally don't like leaving food, I couldn't finish it for the flavour. My partner had the Vegan ramen and that was worse, the vermicelli noodles again were sub par and the broth was like a weak vegetable water. It definitely needed a stock to add to the flavour. Overall I judge a place by the food and if you asked me if I'd come here again I'd say maybe but I definitely wouldn't bother with the ramen section of the menu.
