Giggling Squid - Cardiff St David's in Cardiff

It was busy but the server was very attentive. We didn't have reservations but still managed to find a table for two on a busy Saturday evening. Food was delish.

Two visits last week. Staff were welcoming friendly and helpful. The food was excellent especially the curries

Great atmosphere and the service was great. The food was good but my "fiery hot Thai green curry" was not as spicy as i expected, but then again I eat really spicy food. Other than that I would recommend it, oh and the roti and pork skewers were amazing. Would recommend to anyone looking for a good Thai in Cardiff.

Loved the food. However, the chairs/benches are built for tall people - which ruined the whole experience. Will not go back unless pickong up to take home. Extremely uncomfortable furniture!

The food was great quality, and flavourful! The presentation was also super cute. Staff were lovely and friendly and the place is beautifully decorated making for an enjoyable atmosphere.

Had a wonderful dining experience served by a very dedicated waitress who went above and beyond for us this evening Natty couldn't have done more, even surprising the birthday party with a with a lovely gesture at the end of a delicious meal with a complimentary birthday desserts and even singing Happy Birthday xx Thank you very much for a wonderful evening and look forward to coming back again very soon, 😊

Had a sneaky pre rugby lunch and can highly recommend. Despite being incredibly busy, service was great, friendly staff excellent food and drink. Highly recommend.

My colleague and myself visited the new Giggling Squid restaurant which opened today in Cardiff Bay this is number 50 in the chain. I We received a warm welcome. The restaurant which is located on an upper floor has an open aspect with window views over Cardiff Bay, and very nicely decorated.We were served a variety of Thai dishes for lunch which were nicely prepared and delicious. We wish the new outlet the best of luck for the future.❤️🙏💐

Amazing food and great value for money.

The ambience was awesome. The restaurant was decorated beautifully. The service was okish. I ordered Veg Thai Curry and jasmine rice. I asked to pack the remaining half of it as I was not fully hungry. On opening the box, it was shocking to see that instead of my 'half veg thai curry and rice' somebody's chicken noodles were given to me. I am not bothered about the loss of my leftover food. But it must be more shocking for the other person who would have asked to pack a 'complete non vegeterian meal' for himself. The veg thai curry was below average. The consistency or thickness was not there. Taste was also so so.

Centre of the city, I side the shopping area, nice place to meet friends and have a break between shopping preies.

sadly not great at all considering the price. really pretty interior and well presented food - however food itself was bland and lukewarm, and the service was poor (drinks orders completely forgotten for one thing). wish i’d chosen somewhere else for a family meal tbh (or least read these reviews first)!

absolutely lovely food, incredible customer service and such a warm atmosphere throughout the venue. highly recommend the the Pork Belly starter, to die for! Harrison was one of the shining stars within a clearly very well-oiled workforce.

Really disappointed. Service was rude and unfriendly all night. No smiles, no recommendations and rushed. Food was pretty decent, although starters were a bit dry and bland.

Beautifully decorated inside, staff are really friendly. Good sized portions and plenty of vegan options to choose from. Highly recommend the spring rolls and veg pad Thai.

I absolutely loved the atmosphere and decoration of the cardiff giggling squid branch. however for the price food was mediocre, I had ordered the honey glazed seafood dish, the waitress suggested i ordered rice along side the dish and in my opinion was not needed. The muscles were extremely dry and hard to eat, however sauce was very nice. At around £20 per dish I do believe service could’ve been better, a food check was done as standard but after ordering wine we had to refill glasses ourselfs and so forth. For three people the bill seemed reasonable however the 20% service charge wasn’t especially for the quality of service provided it seems rather excessive. Overall a good place to eat on a special occasion

Absolutely delighted for the service we received, went there with a group of friends. We loved the food and ambience and everything about this restaurant. Have got a halal options available which is amazing and highly appreciated. Mason served us. And was friendly and helpful. Thank you so much. Had a voucher for giggling squid from my daughter for my 65 birthday as I have said a few times that I would like to go, so went as a birthday treat. Starters were nice, I had squid which was tasty and my wife had satay chicken which she thought was a bit dry, for mains my wife had butterfly prawns and noodles which she said was lovely, I had the crispy soft shell cab and prawn curry, unfortunately I did not check the chilli rating which was 2 which even tho I am a curry lover was far too hot for me and the chilli totally masked the taste of the other ingredients! Unfortunately I wasnt able to eat it as there was no taste just chilli burn! Hopefully mine was just a mishap and too much chilli was added!! Not sure tho! For me I would rather taste the food!! I Would go again but maybe not have the curry!

OMG, what an outstanding restaurant just a blink away from Cardiff Castle. Staff were outstanding - friendly, welcoming and easy to engage with. Extensive food and drinks menu - we opted for chicken stay and spring rolls; green curry and pad kee mao; and finished off with lychee yoghurt ice cream and pineapple and coconut sorbet - absolutely delicious.

Had booked here just for a night out, no special reason as we liked the look of the restaurant and the menu selection looked great. I can honestly say we weren't disappointed. We were welcomed in by a happy pleasant host which was nice to see and the restaurant was packed out, we were shown to our table and the young waitress who served us was very polite. We had decided to try a number of sharer starters which we asked the waitress was it ok to order as we go and she replied "No problem". We started off with the fisherman's feast. It was all cooked to perfection, wasn't greasy, with great presentation. Each mouthful was as tasty as the last. On to the next starter platter, we ordered the Bangkok Bites. Again all cooked perfectly and tasted so good. At this point we wanted to try the Skewer platter but were so full by the first two platters we couldn't fit anymore in, shame as i was looking forward to the skewers but that means another trip back to try them. We ordered a dessert of the Lychee yoghurt ice cream which was so rich and creamy and tasted amazing. We finished of with a bourbon for myself and my partner wanted a Tia Maria coffee with floated cream which wasn't on the menu but once again the waitress said "No problem" Our evening was perfect from entering to leaving and for the 2 hours we were in there we never saw an empty table only a queue of people waiting for a table to become free who we walk in customers it seemed. Will definitely book to come here again as it exceeded our expectations. Amazing place.

Nice little place to stop for lunch in city centre.

We visited here with work recently & had the most amazing food! Everything was delicious and came so quickly. Nell served us & was very attentive. Definitely recommend.

Wasn't over whelmed with this restraunt infact dissapointed specially for our 1st vist. We arrived 10mins early and was told we couldn't come in and to wait outside as restaurant was full and table wasn't ready. The restraunt itself was beautiful and had clean. Ordered food and was dissapointed with portion sizes. No dipping bowl for fingers as we had to de-shel the prawns and take out the black vein which really should have been done pri to cook. Ordered stirfry asked for no tofu wasnt a problem only to be served it with it in so again had to dissect my meal before i started. Table became messy mains came and still had starter plates on table which had not be cleared. Deserts looked nice ordered white chocolate cheese cake when it came it was completely frozen unable to eat half of it my teeth were so painful. If i wanted Icecream i would have ordered it. I suffer with extremely sensative teeth. Staff seemed a bit offish when spoke to about a few issues. The restaurant highly over rated and way to expensive for the amount of food you have. Will be be visiting again in future. No not for us.

I was a little apprehensive about eating here as the online reviews haven’t been the best. However we had lovely service from the time we entered the restaurant and throughout the meal.There was a good selection on the menu although some dishes are a little pricey for what you get on some dishes. Our food was served up really quickly and I enjoyed the squid which was a surprise as I’m not a fish/ seafood lover. Some of the starters I thought were a bit bland but my son loved them so it’s a matter of taste. The sticky rice however was served inside a plastic bag which was not very appealing. My melting beef was gorgeous and was a very generous portion so I was surprised by reviews online saying dishes were child size. Overall I enjoyed it here and was better than I thought it would be. I do think though that the service charge should be a option.

We were recommended to try the Giggling Squid by a friend. Wow it was fantastic. It was our Daughter's birthday, so we were sat in what they called The Bird Cage. There was 6 of us including our 5 year old Grandson. The staff were FANTASTIC. The food STUNNING. Was a bit shocked at the added service charge on bill. Would still totally recommend 👌

It is like they decided to take all the flavour out of Thai food and make the blandest plates of food possible. Pad Kra Pao with a sauce that tastes like its entirely made from soy and chilli (no fish suace or oyster sauce) and with Italian Basil instead of Holy Basil. Only connection to authentic Pad Kra Pao is the name. Massaman curry that tastes like an Irish Stew. I really don't know if they have made it bland on purpose as that is what they think people want, or they just have no idea how to make Thai food...

First of all, the manager was so aggressive and hostile, and was so disrespectful to our lovely waitress. The waitress was really sweet and apologised for not being able to serve me alcohol, but the manager seemed to think I was looking for a fight, even though I did not argue once, and simply accepted what was told to me. Along with this, the manager and another member of staff were gossiping about the rest of the staff directly behind us, which I thought was extremely rude and inappropriate. The portion of dessert was also quite small in my opinion, especially for the price they charge. Speaking of desserts, I went here to celebrate my 21st birthday with my friends, and even told them when I booked it. And yet, I did not receive a single happy birthday, or even a free dessert. This was a really disappointing experience overall. Would not recommend.

The food was delicious however the desserts are very small and very expensive and half were missing (probably due to an issue with shipment) . The waitress we had was very lovely but the manager is overwhelming and rude. She shouted at the wait staff to hurry up and put the food on the table as the tray was hot. If it was hot hold it a different way? like from the sides? (just a suggestion) My friend also tried to order a drink for her 21st birthday (did not receive a cake) but forgot her ID and only had a picture of her passport. Of course they did not see this as valid ID however the manager took this as a fight and constantly spewing nonsense of ‘i have the right to refuse to sell you alcohol’ as if we are stupid. The manager and one sever (young man) were also gossiping behind our table which is completely unprofessional! Saying something about ‘there’s no smoke without fire’. Go talk badly about your staff somewhere else but preferably not at all! Other than that the experience could have been a lot better without these setbacks.

Excellent food and service, very busy, but waiting time was very short. Staff were knowledgeable about the menu and gave answers to questions.Don't often go to Cardiff, but will be returning. Anyone frothed Office reading this how about a new branch further into West Wales? Pembrokeshire would be ideal for the holiday period.

I’m disappointed with this place. I was there for a romantic dinner with my husband, but we get the worst possible place in the end of the restaurant next to the bar with glasses for guests 😆 even tho few better tables were free for the whole our visit (over an hour). Drinks: Alcoholic one was really weak and not tasty (like those watery drinks on the pool in All Inc. holidays) and non-alcoholic soft drink was full of ice (In winter time this surprise me as well as the fact that I wasn’t even ask if I want an ice). Generally cold drinks are bad for your digestion specially if you consuming warm food in the same time. Food: Some position were tasty, the other nothing special. My food was also barely warm. I need to mention sides are separate (which is something I don’t like in restaurants, because usually you need to take 2 to have proper balance meal). Why you can’t just do full price and extra sides separate? You also expecting in stir fried mains to have rice in it, but guess what not here, so you pay £13-14 for few small pieces of fried chicken/beef with veggies which looks more like side then mains. Service: They were busy, but when they asked us for a dessert, turned out they don’t have the both we wanted, and they could mention this to us before we were making decision. In my feeling you pay for the decor, but in our table location we didn’t get that much, so in general it was first and the last time in this place.

Used to love this place, when we visited the Clifton Village restaurant many years ago we thought we had found something really special. Since its expansion it has become more of just another chain. Bit of a disappointment when we visited the Cardiff branch. No chicken satay as an issue with supplier (suggesting it is not made in house) and neither of the desserts we ordered were available either (which I found very odd, like the kitchen staff just didn't want to do it?) Anyway, can't imagine I'll be back now, just grew too big to offer the atmosphere or service they used to

We went to the Giggling Squid in Cardiff yesterday for my partner’s 30th. On arrival, they gave him a glass of Prosecco on the house, and wished him a happy birthday. The waiters and waitresses that we had throughout the night were all so friendly and accommodating, always asking if we had enough food and drinks. When we ordered dessert, my partner’s dessert came with “happy birthday” written with sauce on the plate - the waitress organised this herself!! Thank you so much to the wonderful staff for making his 30th meal so special.

My partner and I had made a reservation for this particular establishment well in advance of Valentine's Day, anticipating the high demand for that evening. Our expectations for a delightful experience were unfortunately unmet upon our arrival at 8 pm. Despite being seated promptly and presented with menus, the evening took a downturn when we discovered that the requested cloudy lemonade was unavailable. Subsequently, our choice of a pina colada was also dismissed due to unavailability. As we navigated through the menu adjustments, we were informed that the initially desired pork starter was not available. After settling on an alternative, the disappointment continued when we were informed that pina coladas could not be prepared after ordering. This sequence of setbacks became increasingly frustrating, especially given the significance of Valentine's Day, a night one would expect the establishment to be well-prepared for heightened demand. To exacerbate matters, the waitress later conveyed that none of the main dishes we had selected – steak, beef, and chicken – were unavailable. This unforeseen turn of events left us both agitated and disappointed. Regrettably, with all other venues fully booked, we found ourselves unable to relocate, prompting our decision to leave after enduring a dissatisfactory experience marked by a prolonged wait without any drinks or orders processed. Our departure, though abrupt, was a result of a series of disappointments, overshadowing the commendable interior and ambiance of the establishment. Tip for the future: Inform guests of the unavailable items when first sat down.

Nice atmosphere but very bland food. We booked this restaurant for lunch, upon arrival we were greeted by a very nice member of staff who showed us to our table. The atmosphere within the restaurant is nice and gives a kind of up market feel, and the staff are very friendly and attentive. We ordered the Fisherman’s friend sharing basked as a starter which looked nice but had zero taste, it was very bland and oily, even the sauces were watered down. I ordered a chicken massaman curry which lacked flavour and had a very gritty feel to it, I’ve made better using the massaman curry paste from Lidl with coconut milk. The portion size was tiny and had some very thinly sliced chicken which was clearly overcooked and dry My wife ordered a prawn pad Thai which came in a kids sized portion but looked ok. To conclude, the place is nice but over priced and if you fancy authentic Thai food just order it from your local takeaway, buy a microwave meal version or make it yourself.

Waitress was superb, atmosphere was great, food was average to good, although not very hot. Let down by fruit flies surrounding our food whilst trying to eat. Let the staff know, obviously not their fault personally, but it was a shame to ruin the experience nonetheless.

First time coming for partners birthday. We had the lunch menu which was beautiful and really filling. I had the salt and pepper set and my boyfriend had the royal set. We preferred mine so go for that one for sure 👌🏼 Also really friendly staff our waitress was lovely and knew it was his birthday so brought over a free birthday dessert. Tasty prawn crackers too! For x1 prawn crackers,x2 drinks, x2 sides and x2 lunch tapas sets came to £58 including £6 service charge. Would go again! So pretty here too and food came pretty quick and could tell it was fresh and homemade.

First time visiting Giggling Squid and will definitely be back. The food was incredible (I had pork dumplings to start and chicken pad kee mao for main and my boyfriend had belly pork to start and chicken massaman and egg fried rice for main) - full of flavour, spicy and comforting and generous portions too! What made the experience though was the staff in the Cardiff restaurant - we were greeted immediately on arrival and shown to our seats and staff went above and beyond. Such a lovely evening at Giggling Squid and with so many more things we want to try, we are already planning our next date night here. Thank you.

Visited for lunch with my partner, a 1st for him. Restaurant was very busy but we were pleasantly greeted & quickly seated. Table was near the door so very chilly as diners came & went. As others have said the food is delicious, varied, good quality & arrived piping hot which is so rare these days. Only downside is portion size is small for the price. Service was very good, staff were pleasant / friendly, attentive but not intrusive with a “nothings too much trouble” approach. Tables are quite close so not an intimate venue but a great lively vibe.

This place is really REALLY pretty inside. So feminine and beautifully decorated with great attention to detail. I would love to live here! In terms of accessibility the restaurant does have a lot of different seating areas all of which offer enough space for wheelchair users, and it's level access too. The food was delicious, particularly the seafood sharer! There is a changing places accessible toilet with hoist located near by in the shopping center too!

Service was excellent, and the atmosphere was also really good. Alas, the food was kind of mid. Portion sizes were tiny for the price, and lacked the flavour, depth and spice you’d expect from Thai food. If I wanted bland food I’d have gone to the chippy.

Not really a fan to be honest - completely overpriced very small portions the food is nothing special some was dry , very salty and overall very average and not what I was expecting for the price. Total cost for a lunch 3 starters /4 mains and 5 soft drinks £ 155.73 on top of that a service charge of 15% was automatically added £15.57 making the total bill £ 171.30 !! There is much nicer places in Cardiff for that price tag with better food service and no added service charge !

Tried for the first time on Saturday. Really lovely restaurant shown to very convenient table as we were equipped with baby pram. Chose lovely cocktails and have to say the Pina colada was the best yet. Starters prawn dumplings and satay chicken, both really gorgeous especially the dumplings served in the little black pots with fab dip. Mains Thai red curry first class and drunken ribs these were cooked really well and curry was very good. I do agree that rice should accompany the meals and not charged as extra. This was probably the worse rice ever, quite a let down. All in all enjoyed the meal, service was good, and when in Cardiff again at some point would return.

First time oh my! Squid starter out of this world absolutely perfect. Enjoyed every minute. Bit confused about menu though. I thought the stir fry came with noodles as in the stir fry noodle area .. no worries as ordered rice... maybe state you need to order the noodles....

Went for my birthday it was our first visit, starters were very tasty we had belly pork,skewers and the mushrooms. My husband had the butterfly prawns for main very dry and very bland, was so disappointing. I had the curry which came in a small bowl that looked like a fancy soup there were 4 slices of very thin chicken in it and mostly all peppers for the price the curries are shocking then you have to pay an additional £4 for rice that wasn’t very nice,overcooked and clumped together. I think this is a restaurant that people will try as it’s new but you’ll find not many customers will return. Much tastier food with more choice on the menu at waggamamas. Sorry but won’t be returning for a second time.

Great meal. Felt well looked after. Everyone enjoyed their food and surroundings. Tiny criticism as a personal preference would be the prawns should’ve been out of shells before coated. Didn’t spoil the curry but texture wasn’t great eating the shell. All the food was super tasty and know what I’m ordering next time haha

We had our Christmas work due in the Cardiff branch couple of days ago. The food was outstanding and the service was 10/10. The Manager ,Tony and his team, especially our server Dimitra done amazing a job and looked after us throughout the whole experience. We will be definitely back, thank you for having us.

My recent visit to Giggling Squid-Cardiff was overshadowed by the imposition of an undisclosed service charge. This lack of transparency regarding additional fees is disheartening and significantly impacted my overall satisfaction. I hope you reconsider such practices to provide a more honest and enjoyable dining experience. Even, It’s not professional as well as ethical to add 10% service charge of total order.

Second visit and we had the lunch tapas option. The soup was the outstanding dish - chicken in coconut and lemongrass - and it should be on the main menu. I could dive into a large bowlful. Sadly it’s not. I think GS have mastered...

Wondering if i accidentally ordered off the children’s menu? The pad Thai came and was absolutely tiny I couldn’t believe it. My friend paid 22 pound for some dry beef and to add insult to injury had to fork out an extra 4.50 for rice...

We did not have a great experience, it was very expensive £250+ for a group of 5 (3 of us had 2 courses and 2 had 3 courses). Drinks are pricy too, only 2 people had alcohol and rest only mocktails. The portion sizes are small so you have to order sides. Service was not the best either. I understand it is busy time of the year but you prepare your staff for it. There was confusion about allergies, even though it was communicated a month ago while booking the table. The bill was overpriced and later adjusted when we raised it. The decor is beautiful inside but only if you are seated on a table with the flower arches. Otherwise it is just like any other restaurant (no table festive decor either). Hence I found the cost unreasonable and there are many places in Cardiff with cheaper festive menus. Brought my partner and sister for a meal here at 13:15pm. No need to book before 2pm. As we headed in the male host introduced us in a lively and warm manner which was pleasant introduction for our first visit here through a family recommendation. The decor on the inside was more beautiful than it looks from the outside. Especially with the Xmas decoration, it is worth going in to see. We loved the mint floral, vibrant, white cages, golden booths and a singular neon lighting booth for those of us who happen to like that. Overall the place is perfect for an aesthetic cute café light lunch. The food was overall quite delicious (coming from south asians) but price to portion size was small, while we were satisfied, there is room for more portion. However, the small portion size is understandable if we consider this as a mid-classy flavoursome yet modern cafe instead of a restaurant. It was moderately authentic, which did exceed our expectations, it truthfully wasn't as basic as we thought. Drinks: lychee and rose mocktail which was light in flavour but refreshing between meals. Strawberry mojito which was definitely punchy and delicious (table fave). Starters: sticky chicken - 5 wings, tender and juicy bbq style, 8/10. Butterfly Prawns with Green and Zingy Satay (3 pieces) light crispy prawns tossed in salad and hint of sauce, 7/10. Mains: Prawn and crab coconut curry which was green thai style. served with aubergine and green peppercorns. The crab was battered and very juicy and crispy! There were only 2 battered prawns. The sauce was on point, creamy and spicy, given not a coconut fan was very happy with the taste. We ordered jasmine rice to eat with it. Filling and tasty 9/10. Next was Stir-fried Gao pao chicken and beef (we requested a meat mix). This was okay but it does not come with noodles or rice given it was in the noodle section. We ordered garlic noodles after this was served and we mixed this in (we recommend mixing). But this was a different price and the noodles were plain cooked and didn't have any garlic, but it did come quick. Waitress agreed she would probably mention this going forward to new customers as I'm sure this has happened before. 7/10. Pretty basic though. We would come in again for a lunch date because the place was so pretty and the food is different and surprisingly tasty. Good for a dress-up occasion. Next time to try the dessert. 3 people costed £88, 2 sides, 2 mains, 3 drinks.
