Edinburgh is a superb city, a little humid of course but certainly superb. --------------------- Hotel very well located, impeccable despite the breakfast being too classic but there is quality and quantity lacking the variety that I am looking for. Ah, the coffee is very British (i.e. frankly not great). The staff is on point and the bar is excellent, which makes up for it. Holyrood Park, which can be reached from this hotel in less than five minutes on foot (if you push the pace a little), is a must-see, it's the perfect place for a morning run before seriously starting your day. --------------------- What else can I say? Yes of course, I had been angry with whiskey for over 35 years but my time in Scotland allowed me to see the diversity and high quality of local Single Mats which are rarely/difficult to find in France; provided you pay the price, you can quench your thirst with some excellent peated/smoked wines, which made me decide after our return to France to order a few bottles in anticipation of the heatwaves to come.

Would agree with a lot of the comments on here. Great location. Beautiful hotel. We didn't try the restaurant, but the hotel owns a "cafe" around the corner that was perfect for breakfast. Just be careful when you book. We booked for us and another couple and wound up spending 4 grand for 3 nights after being accused of (and "penalized" for) double booking, which is ludicrous. Basically, we're out $1550. Having contacted the internationally known European travel adviser who recommended this place with our experience, it sounds like our concerns have been expressed by others.

During our recent stay at 10 Hill Place, I encountered several disappointments that unfortunately marred our experience. Despite the positive reviews, our expectations for a pleasant one-night stay as we journeyed onward to Perth were not met. Upon arrival, we were assured of a complimentary breakfast the next morning. However, we were later informed that breakfast would not be available, which led to an uncomfortable and awkward situation. Furthermore, the level of service did not align with the high standards typically expected from a well-reviewed establishment. The staff's demeanor appeared indifferent, and there was a palpable sense of being undervalued as a customer. This was particularly disconcerting given the premium we paid for our accommodations. Additionally, the physical comfort of the room was subpar. The bed was notably uncomfortable, and the pillows were exceptionally hard, which significantly detracted from the quality of our stay. Given these issues, I do not plan to return to this establishment and feel compelled to express my dissatisfaction with the overall experience.

My stay at this hotel was not very good. I got a room for disabled people with a noisy fan which would make it impossible to sleep at night. The receptionist was not interested in helping as she did not hear the fan herself and thought I should ignore the sound. I got a new room, but directly above the restaurant. Every evening and night I heard a sound that reminded me of an electric car reversing, or someone playing on a game machine. The worst part was that the last night I found an insect that looked a lot like a bed bug. The hotel has nice rooms, it was a bit outside, but still within walking distance of most things. The receptionists are unfortunately not the nicest and most helpful, the hotel is very noisy, and possibly has bed bugs (this is something the hotel should check). I would think twice before booking a room at this hotel.

We ate at 10 Hill Place in the late afternoon. Several of us chose haggis, neeps and tatties from the main section of the menu, titled Bar Classics. The "small" fish and chips was a big meal, as was the lentil burger, the club sandwich, and even the starter of loaded fries (the only gluten free item on the menu). The haggis came with a tablespoon of orange mash and a lattice of potato balanced on top. This lattice had approximately the same content as a quarter of a Pringle. There was half a teaspoon of whisky sauce smeared round the edge of the plate. We asked the waiter who brought it where the potatoes were, and were told they were mashed with the neeps. When we said we weren't happy with the amount, he told us to put a review on trip advisor! The next waiter to come in told us that starters were always small. When we said it was a main, she was confused, then said that we must have ordered it from the day menu. That was the only menu we had been given. She sympathised, but offered no solution or compromise. We ate our meals, gratefully for the friends who shared their chips with us so that we could pretend we had had a full meal, like theirs. The whole party were feeling very aggrieved, when Ashley, another staff member, came to see how we were getting on. She was the first person who offered to do anything about it, saying she woukd speak to the kitchen staff. She was able to get the automatic 10% service charge removed from our bill, which went some way to improving the situation. From what all the staff said, there have been issues in the past. The haggis seems to be on as a starter on the evening menu, but it was in the main course section of the day menu. Had they added 50p worth of mashed potatoes we would have been fairly happy with the meal. Even if they increased the price by £1 to compensate for that. But to serve a starter as a main meal because it is lunch time, without letting us know when we ordered it, then to tell us to review the meal rather than actually doing anything to remedy it, was very poor service. The food was very tasty. For the sake of 50p of tatties, and a bit of staff training, what might have been a 4 star review is now only 2 stars. By the way, the pic attached (from their website) is on a small plate, and has at least twice the mash and 10 times the sauce compared to our meals.

Having heard of the fantastic food at the Surgeons Quarter from family we thought we would have to give it a try when visiting with friends. We opted for the three courses, coffee and a bottle of wine for £79 for two people. This was amazing value as it even included the fillet steak which, my very fussy husband said, was cooked to perfection and was really tender. The staff were very friendly and professional and the food was amazing. I can thoroughly recommend both the white chocolate mousse with popcorn icecream and the rhubarb souffle which my husband had. I also had the smoked salmon with crab and braised ox cheek for main. The whole meal was absolutely delicious. An easy 10/10 and we will definately be back when down in Edinburgh next.

However, their service on arriving was awful, they came and asked about wine and drinks then actually never took our order before our food arrived, so we all just had table water. The food was not very warm, even the plates weren’t warm. They were not attentive at all and it wasn’t even that busy. They asked about deserts which then took them so long to come back we didn’t bother either. The food was ok but nothing to rave about, a generally poor experience all round.

Got in at 17.50 with 4 other people in the restaurant. 1 starter took 20 minutes, over 1 hour for mains, had to order dessert when mains arrived because of time pressure. Side orders failed to arrive. Staff agreed to not charge desserts but they (and one of the the missing side orders) appeared on the bill. This is a report on the winebar, not the main restaurant. To start with the positive,Ten Hill Place is an oasis of calm, particularly at festival time. We have visited for food, drinks and general recuperation on a number of occasions over the past three years. The wines are excellent, the staff delightful and the food wholesome and fairly priced. Well worth four stars, perhaps five.So what went wrong this time?Q. How long does it take to prepare a cheese sandwich?A. Apparently over one hour.We had just over an hour to eat between shows and popped into No 10 for much needed refreshment. We ordered drinks and two sandwiches, one cheese, one ham.The drinks arrived promptly, but no food. After 20 minutes we heard one of the staff explaining to the table next door, that their soup would be 45 minutes. The kitchens were flat out and only two chefs were on duty. And our order? The waiter promised to find out. After 40 minutes, I asked the way to the kitchens so that I could make the sandwiches myself. The waiter thought I was jesting. Had we been warned of the likely delay, we would have had our drinks ( very decent wine ) and then dropped into Tesco. The staff, to be fair, were apologetic and embarrassed. They suggested we write to the manager, so, Mr MacKenzie, that is what I am doing here. After just over the hour, our sandwiches arrived. Hurrah, except my cheese sandwich comprised faded chunky cheese with a smattering of relish between two ciabatta halves. Very basic. The ham sandwich was no more appetising. Estimated construction time - under one minute. To be fair, there was a handful of chips too.We were now late. Some of the drinks were knocked off our bill - thank you - and the hotel ordered and, when pressed, agreed to pay for a taxi to get us to the next venue, which we made by the skin of our teeth. And the cause of the hold-up? Apparently a party of six in the dining room had stretched resources. When we looked, no-one else was in evidence. Perhaps a private function was tucked away, but, if so, we should have been warned. We will return to what is otherwise a most welcoming wine bar, but next time we shall bring our own sandwiches. The staff were sweet about the whole episode, But the kindest individual was another ( Scottish ) customer who came over to us and apologised, saying that such an unsatisfactory experience was not typical of Scotland. Which was nice - and true, in our experience.

We were going to a Jazz & Blues Festival Gig at the George Square Speigletent and were looking for somewhere close by to eat - the Wine Bar at No. 10 Hill Place couldn't have been much closer and it turned out to be an excellent choice. Food - first class!! Wine - first Class!! Waiter (Spanish I think) - BETTER THAN FIRST CLASS!! Would definitely recommend 10 Hill Place and will definitely be back again - gem of a place.

The al la carte menu is really superb - top quality especially if you are a foodie like me. There is another option of a main meal for £10 which is better value - I did notice the presentation was not as nice although it was still reasonable if you are on more of a budget. The breakfast here was excellent - with eggs made to order and lots of usual choice - once thing missing was grapefruit though and bananas which I would probably expect in a hotel of this standard.

I wasn't impressed with the restaurant. The menu wasn't to my taste and the spelt was rock hard and inedible.Chef's are extremely slow. We were there over two hours for just a main course. Very nice waitress though.

Absolutely loved our stay, the staff are super friendly. Room spacious, clean & modern. We were on top floor with a fantastic view. The restaurant was visited for evening meal & breakfast. The quality of food was outstanding & I would visit the restaurant again even if we are not staying at the hotel.

We arrived here and where pleasantly surprised. I've lived in Edinburgh all my life and didn't know this place existed. The waiting staff could do with a course in Hospitality and the bar staff could do with a course in the finer art of Drink Blending but the food was outstanding. I can honestly say that I tasted food I would never ever order, I ate the lot!If your after really really well prepared and presented food then this is the place to go.

Found this hotel on tripadviser, we were in Edinburgh for a wedding and the location was ideal. The hotel is a 10min walk from Waverley Station or a short taxi ride. The reception, restaurant and wine bar are bright and airy, hotel is really clean and staff are helpful and pleasant. Our room was a large double on the 4th floor again clean and nicely decorated, equipped as you would expect with tea, coffee making, fridge, ironing board and iron. Bathroom was large with a shower over the bath. The only negative was there was a frosted glass door on the bathroom opposite the toilet and it wasn't very sound proof.Breakfast was good with a hot buffet, cereals and fruit selections.A great little find for us, we really enjoyed our stay and will be back again

Something a bit odd about this hotel, dont get me wrong its good but theres something amiss. Its not the staff they are all great, the rooms are fine, a bit small but ok, the food is great, and the bar is quite good and its only a short stroll through the constant rain to The Royal Mile. So whats the problem, you may ask but I dont know. It may be that the Hotel belongs to The Royal College of Surgeons, not just the Royal College but the Edinburgh branch. They have been cutting stuff up since 1557 so they know a thing or two about cutting. We visited their museum to see their handy work and its very impressive. Disturbing but impressive. There is a dead atmosphere in the Hotel Restaurant but you can entertain yourself by trying to workout who the surgeons are and what they specialise in. There was on quite large chap who must have been Orthopedics' big arms with all that sawing! The food is very good, Pan seared mackerel was cooked just how I like it, crispy skin with soft flesh with a blood red beetroot and black pudding accompaniment. For the main event the wood pidgin breast was very tasty (no comfy of leg though) again served with a blood red beetroot thingy. The waiter did a deal for me on the wine as the first two ordered were out of stock with only the dear stuff left so paid 22 bats for a 29 bat bottle. Fair enough, the surgeons must have quaffed all the cheap stuff. Joking apart I reckon they all stay at the Waldorf Astoria. My advise to you is stay here if you can get a deal, if you pay the full rate you will feel you could have got better elsewhere.

Good food and ambience, slightly over priced. Though very good location parking can be a problem for someone who doesn't have a permit in that area. Not sure about the vallet parking

Stayed at the Hotel. I cannot comment on the quality of the other meals, but the Breakfast was very good, with very attentive staff who were keenly observant and attended to the diners needs at a busy time. The hotel had a large coach load of tourists staying there when I came down for breakfast but I did not feel that the staff were in any way, overwhelmed, and I had a sumptuous breakfast with no delays.

I had a wonderful 3 course meal in this delightful restaurant this evening. Even at the height of the festival, staff were attentive ( although probably exhausted!) and knowledgable about each course. Nothing was too much trouble and the very enthusiastic, young head chef came to advise us personally about which dishes we might choose. The food was beautifully presented, innovative and delicious. We will definitely be back ! Can't believe I have lived in Edinburgh so long and never noticed this wee treasure until now.

The restaurant was pleasant enough, my partner had Bouillabaisse. Unfortunately the waitress didn't have good enough language skills to describe this dish.Expecting to be served this dish in the traditional French manner. We were surprised to see a niggardly amount of fish and shell fish put on a plate, and a small jug of sauce accompanying it.This would be O/K as a starter but wasn't sufficient as a main.My chicken meal was O/K.

Amazing place if you are in hurry or need a little brake on your adventure in Edinburgh. The people working here are super friendly and the prices are good. They have soup of the day if you need something warm and great selection of tasty pies (chicken and mushroom is my favorite). Totaly worth visit at least once!

Went as part of a work-event at Christmas. The hall was stunning, big fireplaces and stunning chandeliers. The food was very very good and a fair portion. Service was prompt and polite and extra considerate for our colleague who can't have peanuts, reassuring him that they checked his meal each time. Food was served at a lovely temperature. I'd love to visit this place as a typical patron. Also, it's a treat to be so far up the Royal Mile as late as we were. Even though it was Christmas time, the street was fairly quiet and Edinburgh old-town looks lovely (ignoring the road works!)
