MUMS Great Comfort Food in Edinburgh, City of

Food was incredible, exactly the warming scran we wanted - I had steak and ale stew with dumplings and leek and bacon mash, my husband had fish and chips. Both great. It was very cold in the restaurant and they had both doors at the back and front open for air - understand it must get hot when you’re serving but all the customers were sitting in their coats shivering. Maybe they need to find a way to get ventilation and keep the customers warm! Service was friendly but felt a bit rushed, we were debating pudding but weren’t given time for our main to go down. Understand that it’s popular though and a queue was probably forming for tables. Would probably come back, but on a warmer day maybe!

The reviews are incomprehensible. Dirty. Glasses dirty. Had a burger without any dressing, fried dry, presented carelessly.

Went there on a rainy morning. The waiter was so kind and welcoming and fun, the food was great and comforting for sure, the playlist was really nice. Had a lovely time, and will come back when I’m visiting Edinburgh again.

We came in on a rainy autumn evening for an early dinner. The server was friendly and informative about the menu, and the food was absolutely delicious. Warm comfort food on a rainy day is always a great idea. I definitely recommend it.

Don't miss this place. Waited 15 minutes in the rain, and it didn't disappoint. The staff is the star here and the food is amazing too. Serving size is huge, and prices are very affordable. Shut it down and bring it to San Diego Boys. We'd love to see you out here!

I went with high expectations, but both the milkshake and the veggie burger were disappointing—I expected much more. Perhaps it was just the choice of dish, but for the price, my expectations were understandably high.

Don't trust the times on Google, they close kitchen early at random times early at 9. Need to place an order or be seated before that. Ended up wasting time driving.

I was here in August, the busy season. Make a reservation! I didn't have one, but I was willing to wait. Their wait time of an hour was accurate. The food was wonderful and affordable, comparatively.

We tried huggies and Shepherds pie for the first time and loved it, as well as the beers we tried. We were so pleased that the next day we repeated it but for breakfast. A real pass!!! And the super nice guys, we will definitely return!!!!

I would not recommend this cafe if you are vegetarian or vegan. The burgers we had were very disappointing and almost uneatable.

Discriminating against Chinese tourists, everyone should not go. They refused to order food for a long time. The waitress even looked askance at people. Are you seriously ill? If you are sick, go to the hospital for treatment and recover soon.

This is a fantastic little place with amazing food and lively atmosphere. We arrived at 6:30 and got a table. By 7:00 there was a line outside and with good reason. I had a chicken and ham pie with mashed potatoes and my wife got the beef Wellington pie with chips. Both were outstanding. The service was also super-friendly and helpful. Highly recommend this when you're in Edinburgh!

It's a small place so when you show up, there might be a wait for a table. It will be worth it, trust me! The sausages and mash were delish. You can pick and choose the favor of the sausages and mash. The chicken burger was amazing too! Friendly staffs. We went there two nights in a row for dinner! Will definitely come back when we visit Edinburgh again.

Food was good and hot. Not amazing, but quite acceptable. The bangers and mash (2 sausages and mash) are the only 'good' thing on the menu. We tried all of the sausages on the menu and all were good. The mustard mash is unique in the best possible way, very yummy. Not a fan of the fish and chips tho. Waitstaff was good considering the understaffing so be patient.

We decided to enjoy dinner on a chilly brisk evening. So worth it. The atmosphere was a vibe with 50s to 80s music such good songs. I decided on the macaroni dish, so worth it. It was nothing crazy but was so good. My Fiancé got a sausage, mash and gravy. His face lit up with how delicious the dish was. Definitely try this place if you are here.

The service is very good, young positive guys work there. But the food is average. There are better places.

Friendly staff, outstanding food! We’ve been in the UK nearly two weeks, and this, by far, was our favorite dining experience.

Had the chicken pot pie and an amazing hot chocolate! the chicken pot pie was hot and crispy and seasoned well the hot chocolate was great and obviously presented amazing! the staff were great as well! Kitchen is open late and that’s the reason i went but ended up being one of my favorite spots to eat in edinburgh

This place has THE BEST mac and cheese that I've ever had, I could've eaten buckets of it! The service was great and the staff were very friendly.

I didn't like the food. I ordered scrambled eggs with salmon on a roll. It was served in a pretty way, but unfortunately I didn't like it. Admittedly, the salmon was an experiment for me, but the egg and rolls didn't convince me either.

I visited this place with friends looking for good food at a reasonable price and we found it! The waiter spoke Spanish and was friendly with us all the time. I recommend it!

Feels like an "American diner". Would highly recommend this establishment. Went on a Wednesday night and still had a 20 minute wait to be seated. We'll worth it. The wait staff was extraordinary! Can't say enough good things about this place.

Really great wee place this. Does what it says on the tin. Plain simple fabulous cooking as you'd expect if your mam or gran was cooking comfort food. I've been here a few times and always brings back memories of home cooked dinners. Have the ice cream floats they took me right back to my childhood in the 70-80 on hot summer day's ice cream and bon-accord lemonade 😋 👌 . Keep doing what you're doing it's ace!

Was wandering the area after a recommendation for tacos. After that place was closed an hour earlier than expected, we found this brilliant little cafe. The food was brilliant. One of us had pie and mash with 3 of the different flavoured sausages. A cajun spice buttermilk chicken sandwich which was perfectly spiced. The fish pie was amazing. I would highly recommend this place and very looking forward to my next trip to Edinburgh to try more of the menu.

Went for breakfast and was OK. Had a reasonable vibe to the place with some quirky elements. Service was friendly but not overly attentive. Opted for breakfast buns which were very reasonable price not over filling but good. Surprised they limited the options as there was no mix and match (ad bacon etc). Area I would pull them up on were the grubby toilets which are overdue a deep clean or refit

The food was wonderful. My daughter being celiac had multiple choices as well. Wonderful experience. The atmosphere is diner style and casual.

It is comfort food and that’s what you’ll get. Had the Scottish breakfast which had more taste than English breakfast usually does in my opinion but I’ve never had the Scottish version before this. Was a bit greasy. I usually think English breakfast is extremely bland but this was not. It was enough to share for two people. The woman working was very kind and pleasant

We tried both steak and chicken pie dishes. They were both delicious, but my favorite was the chicken one. This place was very good for us since we missed vegetable food. It can get a little crowded, but you can pass by and sit down without waiting in line.

The 3 sausages are great. Definitely recommend mums sausage. The other dish I had was a bit under my expectation since it was filled with potato underneath.

Very friendly welcome and good food! The vegan burger is spicy (in fact this is often the case in Scotland: vegan = spicy) Served quickly as we already had our tickets for the castle (which have a timetable) and we had quite limited time. Toilets in the basement.

Everyone was so lovely! Recommend the vegan haggis and the irn bru float and then probably a nap. We took our dog Lola in she was incredibly popular and very well looked after by friendly staff. They have such a great menu will definitely be back!

Great experience because of the cool waitress! Food was alright but if you want to try some local cuisine, I think it's best to choose a different place, maybe with more Scottish atmosphere :) Oh and the desserts were amazing !!!! I was excited to try this place but was disappointed by the service. The servers made us feel very uncomfortable when we asked a question about the bill and menu and they responded rudely. My mom’s meal also came out completely cold like it had not been cooked at all and they acted like they didn’t care - just blamed the kitchen. Not the type of basic customer service expected!

Delicious home-made food, great atmosphere and perfect value for money! We went to eat, we waited about 15 minutes because the place was full. We ate the typical sausages with mashed potatoes and meatloaf, the portions were filling and tasty. Also, the staff was very kind to us. We would return without a doubt!

If you are looking for tasty food, pleasant service and a pleasant atmosphere, you won’t find it at Mums. Like your friends dysfunctional family, the service was indifferent and brusk and some food arrived as it just came out of the refrigerator. As for atmosphere, the service staff were the noisiest group in the place. Time to move out of the house and leave Mum’s cooking behind!

We came on the recommendation of Marcos, a freetour guide, and we really liked it. The food is delicious, it is not the most expensive and their dessert "Treacle and date pudding" is super delicious and not copious.

Honestly the best British food I’ve ever had

My daughter wanted to eat a steak. We searched the internet and that site appeared as recommended to children and a photo of a meat dish. We got there and after waiting 45 minutes for a table they said that the dish did not exist. They told us that “Google had posted the photo” and that “it happened often.” We had to choose something else and it wasn't bad but it was frustrating. Aside from this, we went to the bathroom for a moment and even after notifying them, they gave us the table to another person. We had to solve it ourselves.

Atmosphere was great but food lacked. Very bland, nothing to shout home about at all. I was super excited after hearing so many good things but the food wasn’t great. We had sausage and mash with onion gravy (both pork and veggie options) and a chicken burger. Wouldn’t recommend for the price at all!

Truly, Amazon offers delightful comfort food. It is a wonderful establishment with delicious meals and helpful staff. I highly recommend it and give it a perfect score of 10/10.

A bar-restaurant with typical dishes at a very good price. In addition to not being abusive at all, they do not charge a 10% service fee. You only pay for what you eat. The staff are super friendly and kind, especially a waiter who speaks Spanish quite well. His name is Nico. 100% recommendation.

Unfortunately disappointing. Service was subtly grumpy, the atmosphere was dingy and the food wasn't particularly tasty either. Sure, it's relatively cheap, but for a few pounds more you can eat out nicer nearby!

I highly recommend avoiding this place. It’s a classic tourist trap. The food is subpar, and to make matters worse, we found hair in our dessert. The staff’s attitude is equally disappointing. One server, in particular, with short hair was rude and even made snide remarks about ordering our dessert alongside our mains—likely because she took so long to seat us. If you dislike your job this much, perhaps it’s time to find a new one.

The steak & ale stew & dumpling (carrot and turnip mash) was exactly what I needed after a long day of traveling to Edinburgh. Warm and rich, it was indeed very comforting. Serving size was generous and the beef was tender. I only wish the carrots were cooked softer. The strawberry & yuzu ice cream tasted surprisingly non-yuzu, which is good for me but might not be desirable for someone else. Service was just as warm if not more than their stew :) I found everything comfortable, thanks so much!

When we have overseas visitors, this is the place to go for good old British food. Great service, friendly staff and quality food.

We arrived by chance looking on maps for reviews, typical Scottish food at a very good price. The haggis was very good and the table service was very friendly and approachable. Recommended 100

The food is great, service is great and prices are really reasonable! We both took a pie and the normal size is more than big enough for a normal person. If you want more then take the date pudding wich is a toffeepie with spongecake! It's busy there in august so go on time and else wait in the line. For me the wait was worth it.

We were the first people in the restaurant when it opened. Placed our order and waited. Many other people came in after us. After 45 minutes, most had been served except us. The waitress suddenly realized this and it was clear she had never put our order in. We ended up leaving because we had someplace to be and were late. I’m not willing to try this place again.

I just wanna to tell everyone that this restaurant is RACIST! Me and my friends were waiting outside on the seats and they let two new comers in. We asked why because we have been waiting for ages. The waiter said she didn't trust that we were waiting there. This is rediculously rude and we do not recommend anyone ESPECIALLY THE MINORITIES to spend any penny here.

Feel angry about letting white people go in without queuing up. We came to queue up first but their waitress let the white in. That’s funny. I can’t understand at all.

out doing fringe in Edinburgh went in for food extremely friendly staff, hearty foods, I had the sausage casserole which I highly recommend although saw the steak pie going past and it looked amazing as did the haggis tatties and turnip stack, my wife fancied a salad and although not on the menu they made up a chicken salad for her much appreciated and thoroughly enjoyed.
