Food ok, large portions (between 15 and 17 pounds per portion), the flavors are not out of this world.

Excellent place to eat local food! The service was excellent and we really enjoyed our time there. Delicious and hearty food! I'm looking forward to going back a second time!

It's just so good, portions are the right size even bigger than expected. Dish of the day was so delicious. Fish and chips was just so good we came from Italy and we ate alot. I recommend trying the typical food (like haggis and mum sausage casserole are splendid)or if you like dishes of the day. They are so worth it. Go there I highly recommend it to anyone that wants to try good food typical and also be full when going out. The prices are great not that expensive.

I was so excited to try this place after seeing good reviews but our experience was terrible. There were gnats everywhere that we were killing at our dusty booth. When our food arrived we finally asked to move spots but the back of the restaurant was just as bad. I can't believe other families weren't complaining. We also found a hair in our appetizer and the mains were subpar. My husband complained about his fries and burger and the manager was combative. They comped us for one whiskey and we left as quickly as possible. The shepherds pie was very salty and the side of veggies was very clearly from frozen.

Maybe I caught this place on a bad day? Reviews are good but this place was gross. Fruit flies everywhere, there was sediment in my whisky glass. We found a hair in our camembert, which we didn't even mention we just stopped eating it. The vegan burger was bland, and some of the vegetables were old. Vegan Shepard's pie was really salty. The fries arrived lukewarm and stodgy. When I addressed my concerns with the manager she argued with me about the food quality and only comped a drink. Bathrooms are not clean. Maybe this place was good once, but this was the worst dining experience I've had in Edinburgh.

Very relaxed atmosphere. Got sausages and mash but felt it missed some greens on the side but that’s just a personal preference. Loads of nice comfort foods though.

The food was good but the service was pretty bad : the waitress was bored, did not want to do the job, not smiling and she even forgot us for the desert!!!

Just visited for the third time while going to see a show at the Playhouse. Once again, I got seated straight away. The order didn't take long. In the previous 2 visits, I had macaroni cheese and hand cut chips, so this time, I had the sausages and mash with gravy, followed by the treacle and date pudding with ice cream. It was delicious, and once again, the staff were friendly and attentive. I will have no hesitation in coming back here on my next visit. It is ideally situated across from Greyfriars Kirkyard (it's a few minutes walk away). Update 1 May 2025-visited again at 1700 hrs but different staff this time. No customer service skills. Didn't even get a thank you or a goodbye when I paid the bill. Will need to rethink where to spend my money in future visits to Edinburgh. I have knocked 2 stars off my rating.

Really dirty place, but the food is very very good. Good service, fast and friendly. I don't give 5 stars because of the dirtiness of the place, they haven't swept the floor since they opened I think.

We left our hearts in this city but above all in MUM! Clean place, original in its style and delicious food! We always had breakfast with them, tasting the various options on the menu. Excellent fish and chips and haggis as well as their craft beers. Very kind, friendly and helpful staff. Thank you for your help today, we will definitely repay you!! Used to come here years ago as their steak pie was legendary. Decided to try it as we’re visiting from Spain and wanted comfort food. My wife had the fish pie and said it was great, I had the steak and ale pie which should have been called the “veg, gravy and ale pie” as it had two bits of meat in total in it. There was still ample portion size, and the place was busy so still got its good reputation I was just so disappointed. We had cranachan for pudding which was good but a bit pricey. All in all the price of the steak and ale was £14 and not worth the money.

Awesome spot! We had a blast as a family of four, with two kids around ten, who didn’t complain once — a miracle in itself! The staff were super friendly, the service was top-notch, and the food hit the spot without hitting the wallet too hard. If you’re wandering around Edinburgh and your stomach starts growling, this is the place to park yourself for a tasty lunch. Their specialties are definitely worth the detour!

Mum’s Great Comfort Food absolutely blew us away! The owner is incredibly lovely, and the entire crew radiates positive energy and friendliness — you immediately feel at home. The atmosphere is cozy, welcoming, and full of charm. And the food? Absolutely phenomenal! Every bite was pure comfort and joy. They don’t take reservations, so yes — during peak times, you might have to wait about 15–20 minutes. But trust us: it is so worth it. The line moves quickly, and what awaits you inside is absolutely worth the wait. We highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Edinburgh. It turned our city trip into an unforgettable experience. Thank you to the whole team for making our stay so delicious and special!

This place feels both very local and very touristy at the same time. I highly recommend it to anyone visiting Scotland and looking for authentic Scottish food. The menu is full of classic Scottish dishes. I always bring my friends here when they visit Edinburgh. The haggis and fish & chips are especially delicious!

YOUR FOOD IS A GIFT NOT JUST A MEAL!!! We were 2 Americans traveling to Europe for the first time. We walked over a mile to try some authentic Scottish food and Mums’ chef made the best meal of my entire life- that beef ale stew/pie with garlic and mushroom mashed potatoes and peas. I told my best friend that this is what I wanted as my last meal. Our servers were: a young kid who attends the school behind the cemetery who seemed very bright and kind, and the chef, also, was serving when not concocting her otherworldly meals. She was delightful, friendly, and made me feel part of her family. She truly made our last meal magical. Bravo. 5:5 ⭐️

A place that has restored my faith in honest, comforting, and crucially, delicious, cooking. I ordered a beef stew. The meat was perfectly tender, the mash, beautifully smooth, and the gravy was to die for! Staff were lovely and the whole experience was the best I've had in the UK, at the same level as Irish Hospitality, a level which English restaurants fail to meet If you haven't gone here, do!

A hearty Scottish meal! Main courses were delicious. Our sides of chips and vegetables however were quite dry. The servers could be easily heard complaining about more customers entering. But we recommend for a good main course.

My first time having bangers and mash and Mums did not disappoint! The staff was super sweet and patient with my clueless American moment. The food was great for me and my vegetarian partner. We came back for dinner twice in the one week we spent in Edinburgh.

Delicious home-cooked food and excellent service, it was a real discovery. Everything was incredibly good and exceeded my expectations. The atmosphere is cozy and the staff, who spoke Spanish, were very friendly and helped us choose the best from the menu based on our preferences. We tried the Shepherd's Pie and loved it, it was delicious, perfectly prepared and had an incredible flavor. I would definitely order it many more times. It is a total success to have lunch here, highly recommended to enjoy good homemade Scottish food in Edinburgh.

Presentation of the Haggis tower was superb Whisky gravy beautiful but the haggis potatos and neeps were disappointingly bland. Wife had starter fish cakes and they were top draw. I thought the whole place, decor , tables etc could have been smarter. It felt a little bit like the 'greasy Joe's cabins you used have roadside.

Delicious food and great service

My family went here for dinner on the evening of March 29, 2025. There were broken bones in the sausage, which caused my teeth to break. I had to call 111 for emergency help at night. The manager acted like I was a scammer just plan to cancel the charge for sausages. And only gave me an email address and refused to communicate. There was no reply to the email after 4 days. I am considering investing in FSS and Trading Standards.

The food is delicious, but in my opinion a bit expensive. Overall - solid 4 stars

Their sticky treacle pudding is to die for! Highly recommend!! Their food in general is very delicious, great price-quality ratio. Waiters are all welcoming. We wish to go back to our favorite restaurant in Edinburgh.

The food is amazing but the service has something to be desired. We sat there ages waiting for an order to be taken, and the staff were glaring at us a lot. It took so long in fact i thought one had to go up to order so I did then was told someone would be over. When the food did arrive it was amazing classic comfort food. I just hope the staff can remove the stick they have wedged so that the experience could be more enjoyable.

A nice, but small restaurant. We had the steak ale pie and the steal ale stew with garlic mushroom mash. Both were very, very tasty! The service is great, too - clearly having fun and it feels very familiar. We would come here again.

We are French who came to visit the country. Despite the fact that we spoke English very poorly, it was very easy for us to make ourselves understood. In addition, my children had a really good homemade sausage puree. My wife and I had a burger or the toaster bun and all the foods went very well together. The manager and employees speak a little French, which helped us greatly. Thanks you

I visited Mum’s Comfort Food twice during my trip to Edinburgh, and both times, the food and service were excellent. I especially appreciated the extensive vegetarian selection!

Great value for money. Fun chilled atmosphere—diner esque. I had sausage and mash with a varied amount of options for different mash, gravy and sausages. Very kind service. Went back twice in two days! Plenty of vegan and veggie options too.

Came here based on reviews but I just think we were unlucky and ordered the wrong things off the menu. The steak and ale pie was so bland, I'm not sure there was any ale in it and it was full of carrots and hardly any steak, honestly whoever is in charge of the steak and ale pie filling (size and pastry was awesome), needs to pop over to Gregg's, have a steak bake and realise they have to do better - if a steak bake from Greggs is tastier then they're certainly missing something. The salmon and chips on the specials board was also disappointing, just one little fillet (just like the ones you get a pack of two from the supermarket) and ok chips - defo not worth the price they're charging. If you go here, I reckon you need to order the sausage and mash as this is what the fuss is about and the Mac and cheese looked decent too. The staff were so friendly and upbeat so feel a bit mean leaving this review but wanted to be honest in hope that things improve.

We went for lunch at 15:00 expecting the kitchen to be closed but thankfully it was still open. The food was really good and not too expensive considering it's the center of Edinburgh. Also had veggie options. Nice staff and clean place. Definitely a recommendation for our friends!

Absolutely fantastic! Went here with my family last month on a day trip to Edinburgh after my mum was told that this place does the best mash in the whole world. I'm unfortunately not that keen on mash but those in my family who did try the mash said it was very good. I had the best Mac n Cheese of my life and the milkshakes were also elite. Definitely will visit again if I go to Edinburgh in the future!

Came here for the vegetarian haggis. A few hours later my partner and I both got horrible stomach sickness, including diarrhea and body chills that knocked us out for 12 hours. Not sure what was in the food (it tasted and looked good), but I’ve noticed other reviews also mention food poisoning from this location. Hopefully the owner doesn’t flag my review and get it deleted like they have been doing to other poor reviews!

Scottish food the way we like it! I highly recommend the haggis and fish and chips

The food was excellent, the service was quick and cheerful. The atmosphere was cozy, you felt like you were at home. We had Haggis as a starter, Shepherd's Pie, Mum's Sausage Casserole and the VGN Burger as our main course. For dessert, Treacle Pie and Treacle & Date Pudding. Everything was very fresh and tasty, especially the Seitan burger was great. We will definitely eat here again, all in all a great dinner.

The food was great. Three main courses and two desserts were served fresh, warm and delicious by the extremely friendly staff. The atmosphere is really like mom's home. I was completely satisfied with our visit and will definitely come back.

Who thinks that Burger without a sauce is a good idea? I’ve ordered a Burger for 14£ and got a medium sized burger with fries and a small portion of Coleslaw. I’ve looked closer at the burger and saw that there wasn’t even a drop of sauce on it. There was a patty (which was cut in two halves) a piece of lettuce a slice of tomato and some cucumber. I’ve tasted it and the juiciest part on it was the tomato. We’ve asked if it’s normal that there isn’t any sauce on it and he agreed on it and said that’s normal. We’ve got ketchup and mayonnaise after we asked for it. I’m surprised that we didn’t had to pay for that. I definitely do not recommend this place! The only nice part was that we’ve got tap water on the house. We were 3 people

Our 2nd visit to MUMS. Great booth table, so we could see all the food coming out of the kitchen. Chose the haggis main course, absolutely delicious, would be difficult to pick something else on our next visit. Great ratio of haggis, swede and mash! Lovely service, such friendly staff. Might even go back tonight. The only negative we didn't have room for pudding. Thank you for a lovely meal experience.

Went here couple nights ago, really enjoyed the vegan shepherds pie! Skip the burger, but get that shepherds pie whether you’re vegan or not.

Popped into Mumms on Friday afternoon after visiting the National Museum, advised of a 10 min wait and popped over to the pub opposite to have a drink out the rain. I have eaten here numerous times in the early 2000s and moved to England in 2007. Always my go to place for a decent and value meal in Edinburgh. The owner and staff are friendly but both do not take themselves too seriously, and do not put up with pretentious from other either. Had a lovely chat with the owner about the old days. Portions are generous, and tbh if you are not having bangers, pies or haggis then why bother, but I am sure the rest of fine. Desserts are amazing and yes, just like my mum hoped she could make. Just for reference, had lunch here, also ate at The Kitchin this week, and did not get fruit salads at the Kitchin, just saying.

The food here wasn't necessarily to die for but it's exactly what you expect to get from your mum when you go for a visit. The staff are friendly, they were constantly refilling our water, they work incredibly hard a d it appears as though they like their job which is always a plus. The reason the food does not get full stars from us is because the mac and cheese was far too overdone and the chips were cold. Overall, a great cosy place to go to that is reasonably priced for the amount of food you get!

I absolutely loved it. For any Londoners who remember the Stockpot, you'll get it when I say this is that reincarnated - affordable yet quality, central yet familiar and friendly. Like stepping in to a friend's nan's own caff, and you get extra big portions and everyone is nice to you. I even got tips on jeans for normal bodyshapes.

We went to this place on a Wednesday in February, early lunchtime, so we didn't have to queue. The food was lovely - unpretentious, ample and hearty. The service was really friendly and nice - we had a chat about Tolkein with one of the guys and where else would you get that? Five stars. PS The tea was good too, and you can't say that everywhere.
