Mussel and Steak Bar in Edinburgh, City of

Delicious food! From the outside it looks like a small place and (at least when I went) it didn't look crowded. But don't be fooled, it is one of the best kitchens in Edinburgh. Seafood, meats, salads, and especially the haggis were delicious!

Delicious food and great, friendly service. Our server Rory was attentive and provided great recommendations for whisky. We were greeted with 2 yummy complimentary oysters that. Then we had the white wine and whiskey bacon mussels that were abousletly amazing! I will definitely go back when I am in Edinburgh.

Rory our host was an absolute delight. Helped us chose our scotch, and was so attentive. And the food? The mussels were the very best we've had and we've had then in many places around the world. In fact, he said they get fresh mussels every two days, these were delivered this morning. The wine, the atmosphere, everything was brilliant.

The ribeye huggies and teriyaki salmon, very delicious, excellent service... I couldn't try the oysters, no luck

The food was delicious; it was definitely perfect. The service quality was also impeccable. Everyone was kind and positive. However, there was one issue I noticed with the venue: The upstairs area is a bit small, which is acceptable; we didn’t experience any space issues. However, there are two tables situated right next to the toilets. If you are seated at one of them, chances are you'll be eating your food while facing the toilet and might hear sounds coming from it. I completely understand the need to utilize every available space to accommodate more customers, but it would be better to consider the customer's perspective. Presumably, no one wants to dine (or have any meal) in close proximity to the toilet. I asked the lady assisting me to change my table, and she promptly found another one for me. Note: There is no helpful accessibility for disabled individuals. I extend my thanks to everyone for the wonderful food and delightful venue.

What stands out most is the excellent service... everyone is very friendly, efficient and very smiling... the food deserves to have people like that serving it... For me the best in the center of Edinburgh

The food was very tasty, highly recommended.

Not the best this time around sadly, its been much better in the past. I dont think we will return again given how many places there are to eat in Edinburgh. Mussels were tiny and the feedback we give was a waste of time

This right around the corner from where we are staying. We had a lovely dinner. We had a couple of oysters on the house which turned into our 1/2 dozen and they were delicious. We had the seafood linguine and the haggis Wellington. Both were delicious and hot. The girl at the bar was helpful and attentive.

Tastes good but a bit expensive.

Service was really good but the food was honestly so bad. Maybe the worst we have ever had in a restaurant. The lobster was embarrassing. There wasn’t 2 forkfuls of meat in the thing. It was as if they pulled one of the already eaten lobsters out of the bin and put it on my plate. The steak was unseasoned and dehydrated , the chips tasted like they were fried in old oil. The pepper sauce tasted like a shot of really sweet whisky? Even the garlic butter was vile. How do you mess garlic butter up. Did you use margarine? I feel bad leaving a negative review because the service was so good. But if more people manned up and left honest reviews maybe we would not have wasted over £100 there.

Very underwhelming experience. We came back here because it was good in the past. We ordered Mussels to start, many of them were empty and the ones that were there were the smallest I've ever seen. We fed this back and the lad serving just said ill feed that back, not sure what good that is to us. The main i ordered was venison steak £33, 2 little slithers of meat with some mash... took me about 3 minutes to eat it, so my mum was eating on her own. Her ribs were very good so if anyone reads this and wants a good plate of food you should order that. Fish and chips on the table next to us again looked very underwhelming but the lobster did look good. Maybe i ordered the wrong thing but I can only review what I had and it wasnt great, especially when it was marked as the highlight of the day. My main gripe is feeding stuff back and nothing really happening. Happens a lot in tourist places, as they dont rely on your regular custom anywhere. The service outside of that was ok.

This restaurant is fantastic and without doubt the best food I had in Edinburgh. We were greeted with a warm welcome by the staff who were all excellent and couldn’t do enough for us. We had the oysters and some fresh prawns to start which were both out of this world and so fresh. For mains I had the mixed seafood platter which was unbelievably good and so much of it. So worth the money. For dessert I had a cheesecake which was one of the best I have ever had and that’s saying something! Great choice of whiskeys also. The owner Marshall is a lovely guy and came over and had a good chat with us. I told him how impressed I was with everything and you can see the staff are all enjoying working there. When I come back to Edinburgh again, this place is top of my list. 10 out of 10!

The best dinner in Scotland. Welcoming with a very good oyster offering which obviously made us want to continue eating more, very good and fresh. The fish is good and the portions are plentiful. A bit more expensive than usual but he deserves them

I never leave reviews, but simply had to following our recent, unplanned visit here. Staff where friendly and knowledgable, the surrounding are modest complimented by a warm welcome and good atmosphere. Food - the best seafood we have ever had. We ordered the Mussels, Surf & Turf & linguine. Portions were huge! Topped off with the house white, it was a fab meal. Will defo visit again on our next trip.

Such a nice dinner! The place is pretty small so would suggest making a reservation. The service was good but most waiters are new so be kind to them! Food was delicious.

Amazing food and amazing service great dining tips from the staff thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience some might think it's a little pricey but you do get what you pay outstanding food and the portion sizes are extremely generous

Really enjoyable meal, chilled out friendly staff. Dad shamelessly devoured a whole crab, my seafood linguine portion was huge, delicious amd full of flavour. My brother's kids' mussel portion was creamy and tangy, just right for dunking bread. The complementry fresh oysters were fresh and a nice gesture. Would happily go back.

Excellent meal and great service. Nice atmosphere. The portions are very generous. The only slight issue was the icy draught every time the door was opened.

Comida típica de la ciudad muy rica, el precio es un poco alto pero vale la pena probar sus mejillones en vino blanco y su ternera de angus, calidad excepcional, por ejemplo un plato de ternera de Angus y otro plato lleno de mejillones muchísima cantidad alrededor de 38 libras servicio bastante rápido eso sí reservar porque a pesar de tener bastante sitio está bastante lleno siempre

Visited this place on the back of the glowing reviews and we are so glad we did. Really well looked after and the food was unbelievable. We had surf and turf starter (ribs and mussels) was delicious. We had couple of nice cocktails and for mains we had the 8oz ribeye..without doubt the best steak we have both ever had. Melted in your mouth cooked to perfection. Will definitely revisit when in Edinburgh again

The mussels and steak were great the people on the next table had the basa which looked super tasty the service was good but a bit slow but this was due to being fully booked and under staffed 🐟

Staff went above and beyond when we were seated upstairs on NYE. Food was great and we shall deffinately return on our next visit to this magical city! Forgot to mention how unreal the baileys cheescake is for desert.

Honestly some of the best seafood i have had in my life…never tasted seabass like this. All fresh! The staff are incredible too. The portion sizes are wild.

A lovely little restaurant. Not the largest menu but a good selection and beautifully done. We had a sharing pot of mussels in whisky, bacon and cream sauce with beautiful home baked bread. Service from a young team was excellent and almost faultless.

We had the platter for 2 (£150) and fed 3 people! It was so delicious! And it's just down the road of the famous Victoria Street (diagon alley)

The Haggis Wellington is simply lush. The Mussels some of the best. Worth a visit with lovely helpful and happy staff.

Very cozy place with good background music. We ordered oysters and mussels and they were delicious. We accompany it with a bottle of Pinot Grigio, very fresh and refreshing. For dessert we ordered a Sticky Toffee Pudding, spectacular. If you are in town pay them a visit and try their delicious food.

We also had made a booking for Monday 20th November which was confirmed the day before. On arrival we found the restaurant closed and there was no information to say why this was the case. On enquiring at a nearby restaurant we were told there had been a number of people turning up over the last couple of weeks who were also left disappointed. Do not Book or buy gift vouchers on line

One of our best meals in Edinburgh, a bit luxurious. The service was extremely kind, whereas food was flavorsome and fresh. There is a lunch menu on Saturday that offer really good value!

Came here for an early meal as I’m in Edinburgh for a short break and I was really lucky to get a table. It’s a very popular restaurant as it’s so central to all the tourist attractions but I have to say that I was very surprised at how good was , the service was excellent quick and attentive, and the seafood selection was superb plus you got a taster of oysters. Overall I really liked the place, just come early.

The wait service knew every song on the 80’s/90’s playlist. Surf ‘n Turf, with dipping bread was supreme.

Careful Tourist trap! Zero atmosphere, unfriendly waiter (and the rest of the staff wasn’t really more friendly) , food ok but if you screw up mussels in white wine there is no hope anyway. If a restaurant cannot handle theirs opening hours on Google and their own website (Google says they are closed on Thursday - they were open) it says much about them. Went there because of a family recommendation and were thoroughly disappointed.

I made reservations at Mussel and Steak bar on a whim, trying to scramble together last minute dinner plans. Honestly I had low expectations for this place since it's in one of the most touristy sections of Old Town. I'm happy to say my dinner was fantastic! I ordered their Scottish Brown Crab and a side of fries. The crab also came with a decently portioned salad. I absolutely LOVE crab, and this was one of the best crab dishes I've ever had! In the US, restaurants almost always de-shell them and take away the best parts (the "mustard" and roe in the middle, the meat inside the lateral portions of the shell). I appreciate the more natural, untarnished approach that non-US countries take. Here they cooked it, cut it in half, then I think they seared the ends and added some garlic butter. This was a little bit bigger than a dungeness crab, and came with a plentiful amount of the good stuff! The service here was also exceptional. The food came out very quickly. I noticed they were great about working with the other patrons (the family next to me seemed to have VERY strict dietary requirements) and each table even got a free oyster to sample. I love oysters as well, and this one tasted very fresh. I almost considered ordering a half dozen. This is another Edinburgh restaurant I would definitely revisit!

We had a wonderful meal with fantastic service from the minute we walked in. Special thanks to Courtney who was incredibly attentive and friendly. Would highly recommend the scallops and fillet steak - absolutely sublime. Can’t wait to return.

Fantástico rest en el centro de Edimburgo en Grassmarket. A 3 min de la gold mile Mejillones frescos , langostinos, chowder soup, ostras. My third visit to this restaurant and once again they did not disappoint. Decided to stick with the Surf and Turf again and the ribeye steak was beautifully rendered and cooked perfectly. The table next door had ordered the seafood linguine and is definitely on the hit list for my next visit. The restaurant was extremely busy as it was the Fringe Festival and the Edinburgh tattoo but I had booked in advance. The staff, although rushed off their feet were extremely courteous and accommodating. Highly recommend to all.

Lovely place on Grassmarket. Wide selection of fish and steak, although some dishes of the menu are not always available. Great Cullen Skink soup, while seafood bouillabaisse is a bit heavy, having too many onions. The surf and turf options are interesting but we did not taste them. Good list of cocktails.

It's probably better to reserve in advance as this place is popular. Has decent seafood and meat. The portions are very big in my mind and can become overbearing (the mussels if in the whisky sauce) and I would try lighter dishes next time.

Friendly service, good location, and oyster on the house. However food was disappointing to me. The linguine was overcooked and not flavorful (watery tomato sauce). Mussel with white wine sauce also just okay flavor wise. Prices are high for the quality of food.

This place is absolutley amazing!!! I want to make the 4 hour trip just to go back for food. Service was impeccable and so relaxed we could have sat there all night if we wanted. we had oysters, scallops and mussels to start and OMG...

Pesce freschissimo, preparato e impiattato molto bene. Ottimo il crudo, asciutte le fritture, veramente gustose le zuppe, e buono pure il vino! Non mangio carne per cui non posso esprimermi ma ho visto che era molto gradita. Il personale è molto gentile e disponibile. Ambiente pulito. Situato nella colorata Grassmarket Square, offre possibilità di pranzare fuori, tempo permettendo. Il locale è molto frequentato, meglio prenotare o si rischia di non trovare posto.

Dropped in after a quick Google and was able to get a table for five before the rush. Many things looked really tasty and we ended up ordering surf n turf and the linguine. What we missed was the portions that was humongous. We could easily shared one portion of the linguine. Also served complimenterary oysters. You won't leave hungry that is one thing that is for sure. But prepare your visit because it easily gets crowded here.
