Mussel and Steak Bar in Edinburgh, City of

We were recommended to this restaurant by our hotel and so enjoyed it we went back for a second meal. We tried the recommended Cullen Skink soup (similar to clam chowder but made with smoked fish) and loved it. Ditto for the whole sea bass. On the second night, we shared the huge pot of mussels and then the venison done to perfection. Small, unassuming restaurant but a first-rate kitchen and friendly and attentive wait staff that make you feel welcome as soon as you arrive. Highly recommend on your next visit to Edinburgh.

My wife and I used to come to Edinburgh a fair bit about a decade ago and always go here because it was so good. Very disappointing to return recently to see how it's become a complete tourist trap. Filthy toilets, overpriced and bland food, decor now dated and dirty. Such a shame. We won't be returning.

First, a confession. This was the only place I could book short notice in Edinburgh. Sometimes, no choice turns out to be the best choice. It’s a cosy place with great staff. Complimentary oysters is a nice touch. The Haggis twist, Haggis Wellington, is delicious. The Fillet was one of the best I’ve eaten anywhere, perfectly cooked. Beef surf & turf dishes had juicy steaks and tasty mussels. A real find, this place. Would go again if in Edinburgh. Highly recommend.

We were a group of six adult family members traveling in Edinburgh. One of our group expressed an interest in mussels; and, as it turned out, we could see the Mussel and Steak bar from out hotel. We were there on a busy Saturday night, but service was friendly and efficient. Maybe the pitch to up sell the sharing platter was a little over-entusiastic, but that's not the servers fault. The food was delicious and plentiful. The complimentary oysters were a real treat. I didn't give five stars because there's not a lot of charm to the restaurant, but, hey, you don't eat charm.

We were there for a family of 3, and an asian server served us , and he listened to us attentively and surprisingly spoke our language. One of the best server we met in Edinburgh. We appreciate his service as we cant really understand the menu. Food is okay, but it was his service that made everything so well, thanks. 微信翻译

I went here on Wednesday after visiting the castle and I found the restaurant to have a very welcoming ambience and the food was fairly good. The service I must say was excellent, our table was waited on by a very polite Japanese young man who was attentive throughout the evening and made my wife and I feel very at home in your wonderful city.

We had a wonderful evening! The Service is brilliant! Gordon was so nice, he made us smile the whole time! We got two Oysters for free, which was so friendly! My Husband still thinka about the whisky sauce! One of the best restaurant we visited and we will come back for sure! Thank you so much!!!

Excellent en super fresh seafood at a decent price. Made a second reservation as soon as I left. I'm a critical world traveler but I would certainly recommend oysters and scallops.

Honestly - this place is overrated. It’s crowded, the menu is limited and the wine list - well it needs work. One free “welcome” or is that “on the house oyster” is their schtick. We went over the menu at least three times, while considering going elsewhere. But it was raining and other places seem to be full. Okay we decide on a couple of normal starters: Cullen Skink and salmon 3 ways, yup safe and uninspired cooking. Both were fine and delicious, just something I can do easily at home. Next we finally decided on mussels with cream and herbs and they were perfect. Fine, delicious and lots of them. We should have ordered just a kilo for both of us. So why am I not rating this place highly? Because it was an uninspired menu, items offered were not a restaurant level -“going out for dinner” offer. But in our opinion - boring. We were seated tightly packed at our table, surrounded by others, the music was easy and enjoyable and eclectic mix. We just wondered why go, the menu and wine list need inspiration.

We had such a lovely dinner the food was 10/10 the service was also brilliant as well we had a lovely American girl serving us who was so good with our little boy we will 100% be returning back highly recommend

More than a bar, it's a restaurant, Haggis in crust, mussels in natural sauce, soups, everything excellent. Some bread at the table would be appreciated

Winner all around! We had an incredible experience at this restaurant, especially with their amazing seafood. The evening started with complimentary oysters, and they were absolutely spectacular. We were lucky to get a table without a reservation, but throughout the night, we watched many others turned away due to the restaurant's well-deserved popularity. If you're planning a visit, make sure to book ahead—this place is not to be missed!

Seafood is very fresh, recommended

They gave us a free app of oyster on half shell to start which was deliciously sweet and very clean ocean flavour. We also overheard the owner said to another table that they bring in produce daily so everything is super fresh. Had the soup of the day (leek and ham hock soup) which was much needed as there doesn't seem much veggie options in Edinburgh outside of carrots and potatoes but slightly saltier than my preference if I didn't have it with bread. I also got a kilo mussels with whisky and bacon cream which was very delicious. My travelling friend and I couldn't get through of it enjoying the mussels and dipping more bread into the sauce. Definitely will go back again

Came in for dinner with my family, ages 4 to 74. Everyone was incredibly friendly and we were treated very well. Ollie was our server and he was great. He recommended different dishes and drinks for us and everything was perfect. We had an incredible chicken soup, mussels and pasta. Thank you for the great service Ollie and thank the kitchen for the great food!

I went without a reservation, but they made a table for me. The staff are friendly and the atmosphere is reasonably fancy. Two people ordered beer, today's soup, seafood platter, and haggis, and it was plentiful. With a 10% service charge, it came to about 210,000 won, and I recommend it.

Red flag!! If you are from a mediterranean country, don't go, it's as gross as it sounds... They don't know how to treat the product, it's expensive for what they offer and no, sauces do not always improve the food... We ordered the shellfish platter because it was one of the cheapest options to share; the picture says everything. The scallops were good. Maybe we didn't know how to order properly.

The waiters are super friendly, young and very good sellers of their product. They offer you one oyster per person as a free appetizer, and also of great caliber and quality. Quality local product, some very very good smoked mussels, Scottish seafood and salmon stand out. Prices are also quite tight for the area where it is. Recommended, better to reserve.

We went because of the reviews the place has, with high expectations of the pasta with mussels and seafood, but it turned out to be somewhat bland. We had to add Tabasco and the sauce from the portion of mussels with wine that we ordered as a starter, in addition to salt and pepper. The mussels, which were the star dish to try in that place, were good, and the sauce, curious for what we are usually used to. They give you some complimentary oysters, very fresh. I would repeat to eat the mussels only, because I can't comment on the rest of the menu. Very good attention. Somewhat high in price for what is offered.

Phoned to book as a local solo diner and also due to the Edinburgh festival was pleasantly surprised by the availability of the restaurant around 17:45. The service was excellent, a massive thanks to Edward even with the slight mix up of my main course being brought out before my starter. The food was one of the most delicious meals I have tasted in a while. It is one of the best I have tasted in Edinburgh and I will definitely be returning and recommending this restaurant. The Cullen skink soup was a very tasty and filling started and the main of venison steak perfectly matched it. I also found that the prices were very reasonable for the quality and quantity of good and portions. Very much a 5* review.

A great menu. From mussels, oysters through to steaks. All brilliantly cooked. Staff lovely. We broke a glass recreating a photo from 2017 when our then 18month old grandson found he loved mussels. Although very busy the staff were efficient & friendly. Not expensive for the quality of the food. Too full for pudding although some looked delicious. Will have to go back for the haggis en croute.

Was worried it might be a tourist trap, but very happy with everything. Our server, Ollie, was charming, and he recommended a starter of haggis, which was very good. The features were great, the mussels excellent. It was sunny and the patio enjoyed sun late into the afternoon .

Between London, Dublin, and Edinburgh on a recent trip, we had one of our last dinners here. And we apparently saved the best for last. The food was terrific, very kind and helpful staff.

We noticed the restaurant while walking around the city and the full terrace gave the impression that the restaurant was good. And he was great! Very helpful staff, food fresh, wonderfully prepared, great taste. We ate haggis, French onion and mussel soup...and everything was superb! Warm recommendations👍

We stopped here for lunch. Excellent fresh mussels, fries, and delicious bread with a large glass of crisp white wine. We sat outside and received great friendly service.

The only restaurant in the center that didn't turn us away because it was 9 p.m.! Nice seaside atmosphere, surprising menu. I let myself be tempted by some really (too) spicy udon, a mention with 2-3 peppers wouldn't be too much!! That said, the mussels were excellent and the dessert (pudding) very generous. This is a great location if you are looking for Scottish cuisine. The food was exceptional, I highly recommend ordering the Cullen skink and the mussels in white wine sauce. My biggest compliment to this place is the service. The staff was amazing, all the time checking if we were alright and changing our plates for clean ones to put all the waste of the seafood.

This place was absolutely amazing! I am so glad we had the opportunity to be hosted by Courtney. The food was delicious, great size and great flavors. At the end of our dinner, Courtney took the time to sit with us and make several recommendations for our remaining days visiting Edinburgh.

When we arrived at 18:00, we were told there was no Lobster, crab, scallops or ribs on the menu which was surprising as it’s a seafood based restaurant. We did decide to stay as the remaining items on the menu sounded appealing. We ordered the mussels and fillet steak, my partner asked if the steak could be medium/well but the steak that arrived was medium rare, we requested if this could be cooked a little more. The steak then arrived again 35 minutes later by which time the other mains had been eaten. The service nose dived after this , we were ignored in favour of other tables, it became so bad I had to go to the bar to request the bill. When we did get the bill I tried to pay in cash which wasn’t easily accepted so paid by card instead. A very disappointing dining experience from an establishment that had great reviews. I also would not recommend accepting the table directly outside the urinals.

Food was great. Manager was super rude when we tried to join on party with a small pizza becuase my son and I can’t eat anything on their menu. We had 6 people ordering food and drinks we where the only ones outside and he was just plan rude about it

We happened to stumble across here and it was in short the BEST decision. Absolutely delightful! The mussels were fresh and juicy (not a single empty shell!) and Duncan our server was very friendly and accommodating. Very coeliac (gluten free) friendly and the staff are very helpful. If you walk past this place and don’t go in, you’re a fool!

Great food, atmosphere, and service. Just perfect ! Highly recommended!! We had some oysters, Cullen Skink soup, haggis Wellington and mussels in white wine sauce as well as fish from the kids menu. Everything was absolutely fresh and satisfying.

Generally the experience was pleasant, but for the price I would expect exceptional quality on everything. The oysters were fresh and the soup (6 out of 5!) was the star of the meal. The mains however, (we got seafood pasta and shellfish platter) were under salted and average at best, I would give it a 3.5. I probably would not go again.

11 of us showed up on a Friday night with no reservation. Not only did they find a place for us, they treated us like royalty in spite of our rather loud group all talking at once & even brought us complimentary oysters as a starter. We ordered most of the menu: mussels, sea bass, seafood pasta, steak, & langoustines & each dish was delicious. And wine, of course! Excellent quality for a very fair price. The staff was efficient and so friendly even though a large group can be a challenge. Steak & Mussels is an exceptional dining experience!

I’ve been coming to this restaurant since 2016 and it’s hands down the best mussels in Edinburgh and I’m sorry, even more than mussels in Brussels. The beef dripping chips are out of this world. Don’t dip into ketchup and eat them as they are…. Today we had langoustine, simply dressed with herbed butter (?) and it was so perfectly sweet and light. This will be what we will order on repeat. Service is amazing and the staff are always kind and efficient. The owner, Marshall, is friendly, charismatic and the best host.

The food was outstanding and of excellent quality. We had Seeplatte and ribs. The mussels were the best we've ever eaten, the ribs were buttery and tender, and the sauce was delicious. All around very, very good and completely satisfied.

Wonderful little restaurant in the Grassmarket, service from the young man from Perth was impeccable. Mussel were fresh from the sea and asked our server to hold the cream for a lighter version. Haggis appetizer was tasty. Loved the crab spring roll.

Food: We ordered seafood linguini, seafood platter, oyster, and some drinks which are absolutely 5/5! The serving was in large quantity and all were tasty! It's really pricey but def worth the price. Service: We initially went through their website to book online, however, the open slot is at 9 pm so we tried walking in. Gladly the staff accommodated us and able to have seats. Customer service was also great since they were able to immediately respond to our requests. Atmosphere: I would still rate it 5 since the atmosphere is good despite the area being small but I suggest to improve their toilet. Wouldn't expect it to be a bit old and rusty but overall I'd still rate it 5.

Delicious food! From the outside it looks like a small place and (at least when I went) it didn't look crowded. But don't be fooled, it is one of the best kitchens in Edinburgh. Seafood, meats, salads, and especially the haggis were delicious!

Delicious food and great, friendly service. Our server Rory was attentive and provided great recommendations for whisky. We were greeted with 2 yummy complimentary oysters that. Then we had the white wine and whiskey bacon mussels that were abousletly amazing! I will definitely go back when I am in Edinburgh.

Rory our host was an absolute delight. Helped us chose our scotch, and was so attentive. And the food? The mussels were the very best we've had and we've had then in many places around the world. In fact, he said they get fresh mussels every two days, these were delivered this morning. The wine, the atmosphere, everything was brilliant.

The food was delicious; it was definitely perfect. The service quality was also impeccable. Everyone was kind and positive. However, there was one issue I noticed with the venue: The upstairs area is a bit small, which is acceptable; we didn’t experience any space issues. However, there are two tables situated right next to the toilets. If you are seated at one of them, chances are you'll be eating your food while facing the toilet and might hear sounds coming from it. I completely understand the need to utilize every available space to accommodate more customers, but it would be better to consider the customer's perspective. Presumably, no one wants to dine (or have any meal) in close proximity to the toilet. I asked the lady assisting me to change my table, and she promptly found another one for me. Note: There is no helpful accessibility for disabled individuals. I extend my thanks to everyone for the wonderful food and delightful venue.

What stands out most is the excellent service... everyone is very friendly, efficient and very smiling... the food deserves to have people like that serving it... For me the best in the center of Edinburgh

Service was really good but the food was honestly so bad. Maybe the worst we have ever had in a restaurant. The lobster was embarrassing. There wasn’t 2 forkfuls of meat in the thing. It was as if they pulled one of the already eaten lobsters out of the bin and put it on my plate. The steak was unseasoned and dehydrated , the chips tasted like they were fried in old oil. The pepper sauce tasted like a shot of really sweet whisky? Even the garlic butter was vile. How do you mess garlic butter up. Did you use margarine? I feel bad leaving a negative review because the service was so good. But if more people manned up and left honest reviews maybe we would not have wasted over £100 there.

This right around the corner from where we are staying. We had a lovely dinner. We had a couple of oysters on the house which turned into our 1/2 dozen and they were delicious. We had the seafood linguine and the haggis Wellington. Both were delicious and hot. The girl at the bar was helpful and attentive.
