Templars Hotel and Carvery in North Hertfordshire

The advertised wi - fi didn't exist Very noisy room needs double glazing , over priced , desperately needs redecorating, I will definitely not return

On walking into the hotel it appeared drab and carpet well worn. No one on reception so had to wait until someone came to us from behind bar. No “hello did you have a good trip here?” No small talk just have you stayed before and your room is on forth floor. Room was ok. Bed comfy but only one bedside table and lamp. Therefore I couldn’t read when my husband went to sleep. Shower had lots of black mould and was brown dirt on outside of shower. In this day and age thats not acceptable, there are plenty of good cleaning products out there. I realise its an old place but plumbing was so noisy! We had a glass of wine from the bar which came from a small bottle and was awful. Breakfast was ok was called out from behind bar do you want a full English? Weren’t asked how we would like eggs done and coffee we had to make ourselves from a Nescafe sachet like the ones in room. Wasn’t impressed at all with this place. Go somewhere else.

We visited this place for a meal many years ago when it was called Zeus and the experience was poor. We returned to see if would be good to bring friends to dine. However it was awful. The food when it finally turned up was cool having been served on cold plates and the sweets took an age to arrive, though to be fair were much better than the main courses. The lunchtime clientele shouted around the bar and bad language was the norm. So our conclusion: avoid!

As we were visiting Brown & Gammons next door, we popped into Templars and had a "pensioners special" which turned out to be very good and excellent value. The service was also spot on and we will certainly pay it a visit when we're next in Baldock. If I had to be critical, I'd say the decor and the whole tenor of the place looks a bit jaded - it's faded glory really and nothing that a quick lick of paint, some new carpet and a new doormat in particular wouldn't cure.

Two of us stayed at the above hotel for one night as my daughter was graduating from Cambridge University early the next morning. The cost was a reasonable £70.00 for the night including breakfast. We were given a double room each & I must say the rooms were beautiful, very clean & the decor was very pleasant. The hotel is right in the town centre close to all amenities. I would definitely stay there again if I was ever in the area again.

My partner was booked to stay here for a night as he was working in the area. Checked in to his room to find the bed covers in a bundle on the bed (dirty), a bottle of nearly empty spirit on the side and urine all over the bathroom floor which is not what you want after working from 3 in the morning till 9 at night. He went downstairs and told the receptionist who simply shrugged his shoulders with no apology and chucked him some other keys.

What a great day we had - looked after from start to finish :) We had a meal for 30 followed by our evening reception with a hot/cold buffet and a live band (my husband's) - it couldn't have gone better. It was the perfect venue for what we wanted and Catherine and her team worked brilliantly to ensure that our day went without a hitch. They even prayed for the sun to come out - which it did! We were blissfully unaware of the true impact of the electricity being off all morning which hindered the food preparation enormously. They created a lovely relaxed and friendly atmosphere for us all to enjoy ourselves. The food was superb and everyone commented on how hard the staff worked. Many, including us, stayed over night, which was a bonus :) Having the room to get ready and change in was brilliant! *** Thank you for helping make our special day even more special. ***

Lovely carvery enjoyed many times over the last few years. My partner is veggie and always enjoys his meals too. Great Yorkshire puds. Then suddenly it seemed to change. Nothing tasted quite as good. Maybe a differenr chef. Haven been back for months now.

I attended a wedding as a photographer. The staff were more than accommodating. Friendly and helpful. The food was great.

This used go be THE place to be in baldock. Always busy and always glowing reviews. Recently it has attracted more of a younger crowd with security on the door at weekends which says it all really.it has become more of a sports bar than a "Restaurant" they still serve food (When they have enough staff) but don't expect anything fancy. The drinks are cheap, but that seems to just reflect on the location sadly. Won't be visiting again.

We held a small two-day event hiring a small portion of the dining area, the two days where a pleasure the staff were all friendly and accommodating and went above and beyond with our requests. We found the food very tasty especially the VEGAN burgers. We will be defiantly holding an event here again in the future and will most certainly come back for their food and friendly service.

Me, my husband, my mum and my nanna came here for on Monday night it was really nice. The staff are friendly and the food was lush. I would defo remomend.

Came here for our Company Christmas Party, Friday 8th December. Catherine and her staff were so helpful, very efficient and made our Christmas party go so smoothly. We all had a lovely time. The food was really good with generous portions, I particularly loved the camembert starter, and my chocolate fondant was so good! The disco played great music. In summary a lovely evening enjoyed by all.

Food is basic and far from amazing. However the restaurant is comfortable and relaxed. The staff are friendly and welcoming. It's OK for a quick meal but it's nothing special

I held a party to celebrate my 60th birthday at Templars on Saturday 27th May. Catherine and her staff couldn't have been more helpful in ensuring the event went as I had hoped during the year of planning and organising. My guests filled all the hotel rooms and we joined them for breakfast on the Sunday. The buffet they provided was first class. I didn't go into any of the rooms over the weekend but my guests said they were clean and tidy. Thank you.

Nos alojamos una noche, ¡afortunadamente! ! Nos registramos y nos dijeron cómo llegar a nuestras habitaciones (fuimos con otra pareja) a lo largo de los pasillos, nos pareció que había un ligero aroma y ¡Qué montón de manchas en las alfombras. Entramos en nuestra habitación, e inmediatamente me pareció que había un olor a humedad, de ahí la ventana guillotina estaba abierta, pero la calefacción estaba en completo muy caliente. Sábanas estaban limpias, pero nos sentimos como un edredón individual en una cama doble como edredón no llegar por lados de colchón. Había una gran mancha verde en vez de la alfombra como algo había sido dividido y la alfombra tenía sin duda no ha sido aspiradora por los pasillos. La bandeja de té era bueno con mucho de té y café, pero la bandeja de té nunca había visto un paño húmedo! ! El baño no era mejor, las toallas estaban limpias pero la ducha era atroz nunca habían limpiado, y los grifos lavabo sólo eran simplemente limpia. La peor parte en el cuarto de baño era el suelo se hundía, así que cuando entramos en sus pies se hundía como el piso bajo el linóleo estaba roto, el linóleo había sido apresuradamente y no poner a los bordes correctamente. El desayuno estaba bien y en abundancia. Ya que habíamos pagado 70 libras. 00 para cada habitación, no espera algo mejor, aunque el personal era muy servicial y amable, pero el personal debe contar la visitantes de que la puerta está cerrada por la noche y justo en la puerta para alguien que (sin sonido del timbre) que había estado en una fiesta familiar.

La habitación estaba bien, pero había un aroma desde el baño. El personal era muy servicial y el desayuno bueno. Por desgracia, la cena fue un poco decepcionante que teníamos el pescado y las patatas fritas. Patatas fritas pescado estaba bien, pero no estoy seguro de lo horrible y la salsa añadido? Como yo estaba en negocios el wifi me causó un gran problema. . No puedo decir que tengo peces, pero fue bien.

A nice comfortable hotel in the center of Baldock. Every stay with work has been with an excellent early morning breakfast. Evening meals normally taken in and around town. Doug

La tarifa de la habitación era barata y nos comenzaron a comprender rápidamente por qué. Todo el lugar estaba en mal estado desde la recepción hasta las habitaciones. Nos dieron una habitación en la última planta, que era ruidoso debido a un sistema de ventilación siendo elevado, las camas eran bultos y eran incómodas y la ducha parecía no haber sido limpiadas correctamente. La comida de la noche en la zona del bar era horrible uno de los nuestros tenía que volver porque estaba cruda y como para el desayuno tan mal y tener que también tienen el desayuno junto a una mesa de jóvenes bebiendo cerveza e insultos a las 8 de la mañana un domingo por la mañana. Nunca más vamos.

Stayed here for one night whilst working in Stevenage, unfortunately for myself I didn't know it was totally riddled with bed bugs at the time of check in. After spending one night here and arriving at my new hotel the day after I realised I was covered in around 70-100 bites all over my legs, back, feet and forehead. The best thing about this place was the breakfast and I'd personally give that a 5/10. Will never ever visit this place again. No mattress protector absolutely nothing in order of hygiene on the bed.

Wanted something from menu, omelete from breakfast menu for dinner one night and starter for main next night. Staff very helpful on request. Food OK but no more than that. Drinks OK. Staff overworked.

I have a carvery almost every Sunday here I love them. Everything always looks and tastes good . Definately recommend here ! Also the daytime cafe is good too even if its just for tea and cake Food staff!

I returned here after a year and was very impressed with its changes since my last visit.The waiter was polite and very experienced and the food and drinks arrived swiftly.On this evening in question the manageress was cooking the food and she cooked a first class amazing steak and all of the food was delicious.The last time I visited it was pretty empty and quiet but the word is obviously getting arround as the food and atmosphere has changed and it was starting to get comfortably busy as I was leaving.Well done to the manager and her staff for turning this hotel and resturant into a very nice first class venue.

This was my mother's choice. I asked if she wanted me to book and she said we wouldn't need to (no booking for a Sunday carvery? Should have been a huge clue!)The staff were totally lovely but even that couldn't make up for the food. The food was warm rather than hot. The beef was overcooked and so were all of the vegetables (except the parsnips which were black but raw). We were with 3 pensioners and they all loved it. I guess if your idea of a great meal is cheap but really badly cooked then this is the place for you. If not, find somewhere else!

Went for an evening meal on a Wednesday. Food was absolutely delicious, and was served promptly. Waiter was charming bald man who was ever so helpful. Will definitely be going back!

What a load of crap. We went for the carvery and had a table for 6 people booked, should have realised it would be useless from the moment we made our presence known and we were still waiting 10 mins later to be shown to our table. White wine was ordered, served to the table and yet I had to request a wine cooler!!!The turkey and gammon were cooked nice but lukewarm, cauliflower cheese really? Couldn't taste any cheese, roast parsnips? Were they really roasted!! The mash was more like smash, carrots and cabbage cooked ok but lukewarm!!!15 mins after finishing we had to ask for someone to come and clear the table and for our madness we opted for dessert too, oh what a mistake!!! All desserts ordered were with custard and all came out lukewarm.Service was diabolical and a complete farce, instead of having a couple of members doing the bar and others waiting on designated areas of tables it was a free for all that certainly didn't work!!! As you can guess we certainly won't be returning

What a dissapointment. From the outside it shows class. When I went in it was almost empty! Now that surprised me when I passed other eating places full of customers drinking and eating! I ordered a Martini where the barman asked me what this was! I pointed to a Bianco bottle on the optic where he kind of made a connection. (I think)....The food I ordered which was steak was nice and to be fair it was good. However its down side was that it is dead without any atmosphere. No background music and few customers. You can have the best food in the world put in front of you....but its not appetitable eating in a dead atmosphere.

I love the feel of the place. It has the potential to be crammed on a daily basis. I went on a Sunday lunchtime and chose where I preferred to sit. I wouldn't expect that at a carvery. The person serving had little idea of carving and cut thin and thick slices. The roast potatoes were white and greasy. The parsnips were either thin and crispy or part cooked. The Yorkshire puddings were clearly packet product. This is my second visit and I think my last.

Stopped in Baldock at about 7 on a Sunday evening. Walked along high street and it looked good from the outside. Went in and was shown straight to a table. It was almost deserted. We all ordered the category. The beef looked really dry other choice turkey or Gammon. Loads of vegetables and fresh gravy but roasties dry and crispy.Everyone emptied their plates. Ideal if youre in a rush but not if you want more of an effort.

nice staff , great place but the carvery seriously needs to be improved been in here 3 times and its always empty, I can see why, the last time I visited this place me and my giirlfriend we got food poisoning and have been ill for 2 weeks

I went on the web site to see how to book a table for 4 people filled in the e mail as ask sent it and waited for a message or phone call I waited and waited and im still waiting only problem is I wanted a table for yesterday so cant really rate this place on food buy I give it a big 0 for communication

Went 545 sat. Place empty. Intimidated by 4 staff members stating us as walked in. I couldn't cut beef as was so chewy. Potatoes were all dried up..like they were reheated from yesterday. Yorkies were out of a packet and suspect stuffing balls were too, or least the mixture was. Nothing accept gravy was hot. No spoons with sauses. Noone came to see if everything was ok with meals.only god thing ws cauliflower cheese

Always looks quite inviting from outside but food is just ok and rather bland. The sort of place you send your building contractors too when they are working away from home. Service is ok food is adequate but only really go there if I want cheap and cheerful roast

Took family in will they were visiting us.Quiet for Friday(6.00pm).Nice choice on carvery.Meat very good.Served with a smile.Drinks served to table even after eating.All staff friendly & help full.Good value.Enjoyed time spent there.Family impressed.

Booked the hotel for one night stay and decided to eat in the restaurant. From the look of the place and the rooms plus the cheapness of the non carvery menu, with time tight the meal was possibly not going to be good.However the service and quality of the food far outstripped such a low price tag. Everything was perfectly cooked and presented really well.I may not stay again but would dedinately return for the carvery and restaurant

I visited on a Tuesday evening so there was no carvery. The menu was very limited and the food was disapointing. The meals appeared to not be fresh or home made and the vegetables were dull ( boiled peas and beans), overcooked and watery. The waitress wa friendly and helpful and the prices reasonable but so they should be for the standard of food presented.

We came on a Sunday to eat here as we were in Baldock and it looked nice from the outside. It was quite nice on the inside too but we immediately noticed how quiet it was despite it being lunch time on a Sunday at a Carvery.We sat down and ordered our drinks and when they we received we ordered our food. We decided to order from the menu because the Carvery looked less than appetising. I can't knock the service, it was nothing outstanding but average. There were 4 of us out that day, 3 adults and 1 child. We, as adults, ordered starters and we were nicely offered the child's meal at the same time as our starters.The starters came out accompanied by the child's meal. This "childs" meal was huge, the portion size was so very wrong. This "childs" meal was big enough to more than fill an adult. The starters we ordered were ok. We had the 'soup of the day' which we found to be bland and quite tasteless, the only saving grace was the 'garlic mushrooms' they were exactly as expected. Plenty of garlic taste and flavour.Now on to the main meals. We ordered the Steak and Guinness Pie and the BBQ Chicken Melt. The Steak Pie was advertised to come with 'Shortcrust Pastry' but it was served with a Puff Pastry lid that, as two pies were ordered, we're too uniform in size, shape and consistancy to have been made fresh to order. The pies were served with broccoli, mash and carrots...not the stated mash and peas. The broccoli was cooked to within seconds of being pulp and the 'mashed potatoe' was nothing more than fake mash, similar to something you'd find in a can of Smash.Now the BBQ Chicken Melt. This was another humugous meal. Far, far to big for most human beings. It was either a badly butterflied chicken breast or 2 smaller breast, one atop the other. On top was a small but strong BBQ sauce, 2 rashers of smoked bacon and cheese. The Chicken itself was tasteless and bland and was so close to being undercooked we had to study it to be sure. The only flavour on the chicken was the charcoal. The bacon and the BBQ sauce were the only aspects of this that had any flavour. On top of this was a mountain of melted cheese. Again this cheese must have been the mildest cheese I have ever tasted. Absolutely no flavour at all. I peeled all the cheese off and it was one solid lump of heavy, flavourless, hard rubber. Accompanying this plate of no real flavour was a very large portion of chips that would have been a meal enough. Not only that but there was also a side salad smothered in an unnecessary salad dressing. We got up and reluctantly paid the bill but it's safe to say we will not be returning here or recommending it to anyone. We now know why it was so quiet on a Sunday at lunchtime at a Carvery.

I've been here a few times since Zeus has reopened as Templars. The food is always good and very reasonably priced. On the occasions that I have visited, it was not busy at all, maybe some more advertising may bring in the punters
