George IV in North Hertfordshire

First time there. Super disappointed. Roast potatoes too small. No carrots the greens on plate looks like the last of the bunch. The food was cold and Beef over cooked. For £18 a Sunday roast the dinner didn't or taste very good. My trio of desert the roly Poly was rock hard and dry. I wanted to complain but family ask me not too. Let's rather vote with our feet. It's a shame as Baldock hasn't got any nice Restaurants with decent pub food of meals anymore. You have to go to Hitchin or else where.

Booked online only 1.5 hours before we went, made to feel welcome, very good food and great service.

Waited ages for staff to take our order then ages for plates to be cleared. Soup was cold!

Food is always nice. Hot wings are amazing!

I chose the sea bass, although it was expensive, as I love fish dishes. After a long wait I was served first. The fish was lukewarm and overcooked, the peas and the broccoli were nearly cold and the latter was difficult to cut. Fish should be lightly cooked and served quickly, not left to wait for the other people’s dishes to be ready.

Amazing food and service. Highly recommend visiting this pub. We were looked after by Mia, Andrea and Donna. Thank you to the kitchen staff as well, all the meals were excellent 👌

I had an amazing family time! The food was amazing and so was the service team!! Mia was taking care of us and she was absolutely Brilliant!

Sat in the quiet corner with a group of loud men next to us. No issue with some jolity but why at full volume? I asked the manager to ask them to be a little quieter, but he wouldn't. Lamb shank shepherd's pie meat was tough, the shank had dried out and not tender. We'll wait to see if they reduce the bill, two shanks not eaten. The other dishes were good.

Delivery was late. The food was cold and dry! The chicken hardly had any coating on food was awful 😖

Sat Night not that busy but enough people to give a reasonable atmosphere. There service was timely and the food was tasty and well presented and at a sensible price. Service charge is optional. Would eat here again if in the area.

Great venue and great staff. Been here a few times and it’s always been excellent. I also booked a table for birthday brunch with the family and everyone was happy with their meal. Today I went in for breakfast with friends, one has a severe gluten intolerance and they went above and beyond to accommodate, especially Donna who was very professional, checked with the chef and made sure everything perfect on the plate. Thank you, thank you, thank you. 👍🏻

Went there today with my mum, I ordered the crispy chicken strips starter and mum had the pork and apple starter. Sadly my chicken strips were far from crispy, they were instead chewy, tasteless and very pale. My mums starter was OK. For my mains, I had the vegetable dish, which consisted of 2 mushrooms, 1 half a tomato, 2 small patties of sweet potato, a small chunk of pumpkin, 2 bits of pepper, half an onion some peas and chips. The chips were soggy and cold and the veg was tasteless, rubbery and non descript. I had halloumi as a side which was way overcooked. The veg dish was extremely poor for £17 + and the halloumi, well was not worth the money charged. The only saving grace was the service was good. Overall, unimpressed, and lack lustre. I won't be going back that's for sure. Very disappointing

Nice place to have your Sunday roast with the family. The food is well presented and amazingly cooked . Mia and Ebony are very attentive and friendly made our visit more pleasant than usual. We should comeback soon enough

Hearty pub food off a traditional menu. Staff were excellent. The place had character identical to a load of other English pubs, and the atmosphere suffered a bit from it being so open plan.

I've been here a few times now... food is always freshly prepared and arrives at the table fairly quickly. There's a section at the rear of the restaurant where dog owners can bring in their animals and sit and eat.

Lovely starter and roast dinner however the roast potatoes were too small and not crispy. They were served white. The rest of the dinner faultless and my crispy squid and husbands chicken strips were delicious.

Enjoyed the food and drink. The service was attentive. Only (slight) minus was the till would not accept our voucher for two meals for £20 which made paying slower than it might have been.

We were warmly welcomed, and the lady behind the bar was smiley and seemed friendly, and all other staff were pleasant and helpful throughout. We were served quickly. The limited real ale options were a bit disappointing as several were not available, leaving IPA, but found something we were happy with. The menu seemed really good with lots of veggie and some fish options, which was good for me, and my other half struggled to choose as there was a lot he could have gone for. Mushroom and ale pie and chicken burger were both very good, and as we were quite full, it was nice to have the option of small pudding and a coffee. Mini cheesecake and chocolate fudge cake were nice, but flat white coffees were not the greatest. Overall, however, the experience was a good one, and based on todays visit, we would happily return.

Much improved in my last two visits. Good roast at affordable price. I would like to swap out the Carbs for more veg. Ans it frustrates me that the is no pedestrian access at the north end of the site. It's a long old walk up the hill from Baldock.

One of my favourite places to stop off to break the journey as it's always welcoming with a very clean premises & a large carpark with dog walking access. The food is always good quality pub food, promptly served & very polite staff.

Great food , tasty and fresh . Really nice and friendly service . Will deffinitley recommend and return again as was amazing .

Lovely late Boxing Day lunch with friends

Went with family for dinner ordered the lamb shank Shepard’s pie . My daughter and I ate ours but we all were all a bit took back as the lamb shank was sticking out of the Shepard's pie and my husband sent his back as a bit put off . I think the lady was angry with this. She brought the menu back so he could choose again but said what if we take the meat off the bone and put it back in the pie. But my husband didn’t want this . Anyway he didn’t choose anything else but said he might have a sweet as we were eating now . She took the menu back and we never saw her again. After saying she would bring the sweet menu back . I understand we choose wrong maybe but to be treated this way I don’t think we deserved . It was meant to be a nice meal together . I think she needs to go back and be retrained in customer care.

Service has quick, shame my food wasn't what I ordered and charged me for what I did not receive, amazing even though I told them.

Food arrived 2 hours after ordering, despite only saying it would be one hour wait. I tried cancelling it for a refund and they wouldn't let me. They brought the food knowing it was going to be cold. Really disappointed.

Arrived as a group for the breakfast with Santa event and it was fantastic. Food was good and served in a timely manner. Staff were lovely and made it really enjoyable for the little ones who were very excited to see Santa. Lovely staff and a nice food, fully recommend this place for families and a well stocked bar for a trip with friends

10 for 10! We got 3 different dishes and they were all so good! Definitely worth a drive! Smothered Chicken, Steak and Ale Pie and Pork Belly are dishes you have to try.

Batter on chicken could have been better (a bit more crispy) wish I could choose something else apart from the amount of chips. Coleslaw lovely. Maybe should offer drink options.

I've visited several times over the past 30 years. Warm friendly, quiet atmosphere . Cards taken & kept at the till untoll meal is finished . Good food choices 😋 Reasonably prices.

07Jul2024 Visited on spec. The food, beer and service is great. The pub offers superb value. The menu is mainly traditional, but with the occasional flair of something different, to tweak the dishes, and the results are brilliant. The pork belly with creamed potato and jus is such a well balanced array of deep flavours.

Had a lovely meal and the service was excellent.

Here to update my review - the management seemed to have made many improvements and the service was much better than before! The white girl in glasses with a ponytail was really friendly and professional. Food was nice too!

The burgers were amazing especially the vegetable burger with home made relish . Fabulous service too- we will be back soon

I must say I'm totally disappointed with the customer services after taking my family out today for a breakfast birthday. Service was very pushy, being told when we arrived that if I wanted to add a disabled child we would have to make room in the space we had. The restaurant was practically empty and I did pre-book but sadly my son with the disabled child had been delayed Nd I was told the table we had is needed and booked out from midday. I felt extremely embarrassed as I was treating my family which included my 83 year old mother with two of her great great grandchildren. Absolutely appauling behaviour

Very friendly and comfortable place to go out for a dinner with the wife. Very good food and good selection of drinks !will be back soon

W hours late, Everything was cold. Eveyone who ate the mayo and coleslaw were sixk afterwards, will never order again.

Had lunch with my son, lovely atmosphere, the lady who served us was really polite and friendly, if I was totally honest I think it was a little bit over priced for what we ordered, and could have been presented on our plate's better. The food it's self was very nice 👍

Great Sunday roast slow service

For the third time for Sunday dinner and yet again run out if most roasts!

Had booked a table and when arriving was told table wasn’t ready wait for food was 40 minutes, short staffed. So when waiting for outrage to be ready and gentleman went to complain to female manager and he was not happy with what was happening and the manager walked away and we heard her swearing and her attitude really changed to not being nice. So me and my partner walked out as the atmosphere in there was horrible. Of all the times I’ve been going to this pub I’ve never experienced anything like it. If you know your that short with staff and obviously couldn’t cope stop taking bookings do something don’t keep putting people to tables and then give bad service. Sorry to say I won’t be going again for a long while I hope they sort it out for Xmas rush as it will be a nightmare again.

absolute joke waited 2 and half hours come stone cold got put in the bin dint send my chips and dint put chicken. in my chicken cheese chips wrap only had chips and cheese in it and refused to give my my money back joke of a takeaway

2 hours I waiting for my food and still I didn't get if they don't wanna bring no problem but they should text me and I oder from somewhere else than

Pub is half empty on arrival after 3:15 pm and was clearly visible that all the free tables were not reserved (also on their system). We have been turned down by staff that they only take bookings until 4pm.

Arrived at around 15:15. Two of us. Obviously visible free and clear tables for two, at least four of them. Where we were "please wait to be seated", we were told: "we are booking only before 4PM". This lack of flexibility is not acceptable. You are making a living from guests who want to eat there, don't you?

food was freezing and chips were soggy

We stopped at the George IV for dinner on the way home, first time we had visited the pub. It won't be the last! Warm welcome, a broad menu with some interesting (and seasonal) specials and decent prices too. The food was great - special shout out to the Gressingham Duck pie which was very generously filled and the (recommended) salted caramel sundae. Service was really good, and the owners are keen to put their stamp on the place, very friendly and keen to hear feedback. So a big thank you from us and see you again soon!

I didn't get my money back, even today I'm going to give a very bad review.

Food was cold onion rings was half cooked and burger was falling apart with all the sauce on 1 side worst order ive ever got from here

The staff here are always welcoming and really go out of the way to make our experience better, Grace goes above and beyond and makes out autistic children feel welcome and safe to be able to enjoy a meal out with us.

We visited in May and had an awful experience so thought maybe we wouldn't go back, but decided that all the other times we'd been were fine so give it another go. So glad we did, we had a lovely evening. The food was excellent, I recommend the Signature Burger. It was fully staffed so everything ran really smoothly, the staff were absolutely top of their game, we were not rushed at all unlike at some other establishments, everything was calm and relaxed. They have a wide selection of drinks and non alcoholic beers and ciders so something to suit all. Very cosy on an Autumn evening. We look forward to our next visit!

As previous customers, we were sent a buy one get one free voucher and decided to treat ourselves. Unfortunately this was an experience that was extremely poor for me, and although my partners meal was okay he was left eating on his own due to the 2 issues, both the poor cooking and the quality of my meal. I had ordered a steak, well done. This is something I rarely do, and the George cook is the reason why. My steak arrived with patches of raw, red blood on top. Although it was not necessary, one cut was sufficient to confirm it was pink and leaking blood inside too. This turned my stomach and, with our waitress not in view, the plate went straight back to the bar where the barman confirmed the red blood was clearly visible on the steak. Visible red blood on the outside of a steak is a clear sign of poor cooking and personally repulsive to me. The same steak was returned cooked well done and I did try to eat it but it was tough as old boots and 20-25% on inspection turned out to be a large triangle of gristle. All in all, this meant that my meal was a half of a steak and two small jacket potatoes. I showed the gristle to the barman, who, in all fairness, did take the cost of the steak off the bill however, as we would have used the buy one get one free voucher and not paid for it anyway it really didn't make me feel any happier. I would say the front of house staff were fairly pleasant but the quality of this steak in the first place, and the poor cooking of it in the second place were very far from satisfactory. I can only suggest you check each steak very carefully before trying to eat it, or, as my partner did, go for the sausages.

the order was over an hour and half late, i could have walked in the time it took to deliver the other, it is also stone cold and the delivery driver was extremely rude when i went out to collect the food

Always lovely food and amazing staff I take my lady with dementia and they are so accommodating always. Would highly recommend we have had lunch and dinner.

Stopped off here whilst travelling with work. The food was fantastic! We were expecting basic pub food but the food was superb, from starts to desserts, it was all very tasty!

Don't bother.... Wanted to book for Father in Laws birthday. They don't take bookings for over 12!! They said "we would block the kitchen up" Awful thing to say. Think that's disgusting really. No different to having to tables of 8 in there!! Wont ever get another penny from me. Rather go to somewhere where everyone is welcome!!! .....Then you get a pathetic response from the "Owner" Nothing like trying to help someone out?? Embarrassing!!

We were served by Katie who was just superb. She was friendly, professional and very attentive. I have a dairy allergy and so eating out is always a nervous experience but at George IV all the staff are extremely helpful and informative about what is safe. They kitchen do an amazing job of turning out the best food at an extremely high standard. The manager himself is a lovely welcoming and friendly man. It feels like eating out but in someone's home and very warm welcome and excellent staff. It is our fist choice for eating out every time and would highly recommend to others. Thank you to all the staff.
