The Angel Vaults Inn in North Hertfordshire

Great conversion of the original Conservative Club in Hitchin. Historic building tastefully improved witha large metal and glass conservatory on the rear of the Georgian building. Usual Wetherspoon menu and drinks at excellent prices. We visit everytime we're in Hitchin as it is a lovely building in a lovely area of the town.

Very good Wetherspoons, light and sunny pub at very low prices. 1 of the best Wetherspoons I've been too

Good value, clean and efficient. Although you can spend ages waiting to order if you decide o go to the bar. Get what you pay for. Endless freshly ground coffee.

Disappointed with the choice of ales.

My Muslim friend sat on the floor and the bar staff refused to serve us. I can’t believe the discrimination taste has towards Muslims. We were spending money and the Muslim sit down and have his religious reasons and and was discreet.

Once again the food was cold and the staff had a couldn't care attitude. Tables were dirty and coffee machines not working. This place is one to miss

Great Spoons, centrally located in town centre. Very popular with silver haired citizens meeting up for coffee and a chat.

One of the best spoons I have seen lovely garden

I had an order error on the app. Ordered a meal and a drink and received (and was charged for) 2 meals and 1 drink. Made no sense. When I questioned this on receipt I was told it was my error and refused a refund. Despite explaining that it’s not possible to order 2 mains and 1 drink when ordering a meal deal, the manager was insistent it was my error and refused a refund. He refused to give me contact details for head office/ordering to resolve the issue despite multiple requests. He then got the security to intimidate me. Eventually, after multiple requests for a refund and/or contact details to contact head office (all of which were refused)…..he asked me to leave. I immediately complied- yet I have not yet received my refund. Avoid

The staff are lovely and beers are decent and cheap. Food is okay for the price as with most Wetherspoons. The pub itself is great, lots of room inside and outside.

I've always liked Wetherspoons and they've worked hard at getting the place workable during covid 19. Good community pub serving all generations although older people may struggle sharing the same space with teen-agers weekend evenings who don't have personal volume controls!!

Would give 0 stars if I could. The vegan small quorn nuggets wrap is a big fat LIE. No veggies there AT ALL even though the ingredients list clearly cucumber and tomato. Advertise your products clearly pls.

From Sam at security through through to the lightspeed service, I was pleasantly surprised at the size of the pub, the finnish, atmosphere and value (there's also a carpark)

Eaten here on the last couple of times we have visited Hitchin. Good value for money, food ok. Waitress on both occasions not very customer friendly. Just plonks the plate of food on table. Feels like this particular Weatherspoons does not need to be customer friendly as is very busy. On both occasions although a comfortable pub, there are people that have had a lot to drink ( possibly due to low prices ). We ate in the early evening (1800 hrs) and had to listen to a very drunk young person swearing for at least an hour. So I wouldn’t recommend taking your children there. Weatherspoons has the right ingredients, but needs to curb the loud drunk individuals.( I thought Hitchin was meant to be ‘upmarket’ )

Visited twice in dec 2023 on consecutive nights, the atmosphere was great ,not too loud but a nice vibe , the service was excellent & the food & drink top notch , couldn't fault the place ,will definitely be visiting again when I'm back in hitchin.

Went in for a late lunch, great warm ambience. The pub was very clean, easy to order with their app, food arrived in great time and was delicious.

Always very friendly. Food ok. Toilets lovely, and clean.

Complete joke, sat there waiting an hour for our food after we ordered. Wondered where our food was and went over to ask, got told it would be another hour for food! 2 hour wait is totally unacceptable as we had to get back to our coach after a stop off. I don't expect this sort of service from a Wetherspoons when they are normally reliable and fast for food. To their credit we got our money back, but I don't expect to be only told there's another hour wait after already waiting an hour! (they mentioned nothing about the wait when we actually ordered)

What I like about the Angel Vaults is the different areas and that they don’t clash. Eaters can eat and drinkers can drink. Great place.

Didn't eat food, just went for a social drink with friends. Bar staff were very friendly, and the atmosphere and decor were really cosy. Great garden seating area outside and would definitely go back to try the food.

Didn't eat in but the beers were cheap and the service good considering the size of the pub and the number of customers

Not impressed, booked a table, not available when we arrived, somebody else sitting in it..... Not all the menu was available....when ordering sweet menu said £2.50 however was told it was £3.49.....finally not enough bar staff waited for over 10 mins to be served and pub was not busy... can't imagine how long you would have to wait when it's busy.... won't be rushing back.

Firstly it is not a gastropub as described in your heading. It serves standard unadorned unfussy food. And it is cheap cheap cheap. Lovely building, fab location, one of the best Wetherspoons I've been to

A lot of Spoons have gone downhill. This one was one of the best we've been to, in terms of cleanliness etc. Also, the hot chocolate was lovely and actually hot.

Same old, same old Weatherspoons. You get what you pay no surprises. The building in beautiful though and Hitchin is amazing for coffee shops, sandwich bars pubs and eateries. Plenty of other choice if The Angel Vaults isn't for you.

Is great 4 an afternoon. Liked it had a beer garden & the beer is well priced. Will visit it again on a sunny day. Still can't get use 2 queuing so used the app.

Needs more staff, the tables, and menus were wet and sticky. The floor looked dirty. Gents WC was very smelly!

Very dark inside ,all on different levels, the floor near the bar area very sticky, looked very tired needs money spent on it to update decor. Tables needed cleaning they were sticky as well. Didn’t stay long no atmosphere in there.

Went for the rugby. Stayed for the night.

Amazing beer garden, goes on forever!

Nice little pub where you can sit with a coffee and a bite to eat and watch the world go by. The beer garden is an amazing sun trap and was a nice place to sit while killing time.

This is a good spoons. Lively, packed, worth a visit. Super historical building. Very convenient in the town centre, a great way to make an evening go well.

Great catch up with my daughter yesterday. Loved the garden.

Dinner and enjoyed very much. Bringing my girlfriend back in October for her birthday loved it in there.

Amazing Place || Fab Garden || Nicely Put Together || Cozy

When I used to visit here before COVID it was the place to be with a huge variety on the menu and a great selection of ales. Post COVID the decline in service, attitude, quality, and bang for buck has been disastrous. It was my birthday today and me and my missus decided to have a couple of drinks and something to eat. I ordered a 11" pizza and the missus ordered a wrap with halloumi fries. For £4.95 she got 7 small halloumi fries that were tiny and for £10.94 I ordered the 11" pizza. I think the owner of wetherspoons needs to take this on board otherwise he will have to sell more of his pubs to fill his pockets. All I can say is be vigilant and aware as I got a surprise when my pizza arrived 8" in diameter as when a couple of weeks ago I struggled to eat the whole thing as then it was 11". I would have reported this to the waiter at the time but they were so quick to leave my table after handing over the food (coincidentally). If this is the way restaurants and pubs are going using wars and pandemics as an excuse to rob the public I strongly advise we all eat at home.

Dreadful pub, service terrible, staff rude and food cold. Much better pubs in the area with better service and food. Manager arrogant and rude.

First time ever i have said anything about The Angel Vaults. Went in this morning 31st August 2023. Where i wanted to sit i got a cloth and spray to clean the seat and table. Went to the bar just ordered A egg and Quorn muffin With coffee. It would have been nice if some of the staff at least would have smiled It costs nothing. The muffin itself wasnt cooked properly, Sadly upstairs in the ladies, It really did need a good clean all around the edges of the floors. The toilet i used had no loo cover, Sinks could have had a better clean. Tables downstairs needed cleaning ,As did the chairs. I hadnt been in there for months and sadly it needs a refresh .Normally Weatherspoons is welcoming and serves good food . But i am just writing a honest review.

Bank holiday lunchtime no ice for drinks and menu was so limited as everything we ordered was sold out no fish no chicken of any description no sausages must have eaten into the profits not to have enough food in stock. I ended up with 2 broken fried eggs 2 slices of what was supposed to be Wiltshire cured ham which was in fact processed thin ham out of a packet and cold chips it was disgusting 🤢 last time I visit one of this chain they have gone downhill. Think the cook needs a lesson on how to fry an egg.

Good pub I always Enjoy a visit to this pub I didn't eat on this occasion but wetherspoons food is what it is but Generally this is a very lovely pub and the Garden is really fab look forward to going back soon

Very nice pub with a large outdoor terrace to enjoy the sun! Ordering at the bar is not always easy because of the crowd and the management of who arrived before whom, but we had a great time.

My friends and I have been regular customers at Wetherspoons Hitchin since they opened and generally find our experience positive especially if Claire a long-standing employer is working on the bar. When taking our orders as well as being efficient she is very polite, friendly, and patient. Claire is a credit to your business and I trust that she progresses well in her career at your establishment.

Service is perfectly to the level you would expect 16 year olds to provide at the bar the cellar and the kitchen. Most of the staff are too young to have even tasted beer to know how bad they are serving it. The kitchen staff could barely make a pot noodle if you boiled the kettle for them. You can tell the managers because they are the ones who are 17 years old

Classic spoons, cheap and cheerful, nice outdoor area

I’m writing this having just been for a drink here, or rather tried to. I was with a group of work colleagues & just finished a lovely meal at IBOS in Hitchin. As it was about 9:30 when we finished we decided to have a final drink here. Bad decision :( To put this in context we were smartly dressed, several of us in 50s or 60s & certainly not rowdy or drunk. I ordered 7 drinks, 2 of which I asked for Pinot blush. The bartender said we don’t have that, only available by the bottle. He gave us 2 glasses of rose from a tap instead. My colleagues didn’t like this after tasting it & pointed to bottles of ‘Blush’ in the fridge which were plainly half full. Asking about these he said yes they are by the glass but not Pinot. Which was silly as he hadn’t offered them as an option. They asked to swap them which he said they couldn’t do (even though they didn’t like them). I offered to pay for 2 more drinks but the bartender just walked away saying he gave us what we wanted. Then it got really silly. The young bar manager appeared & said we were being rude & difficult & not to talk to her staff that way. Then a couple of minutes later the equally young (presumably) general manager appeared & asked us to leave as we were being ‘disrespectful’ to his staff. I felt like it was the Twilight Zone it was so weird. We weren’t being difficult or even arguing. We were just standing by the bar saying what terrible service it was & couldn’t believe we’d been spoken to that way. One of my colleagues left in tears saying she’d never been treated like that & I have to agree the whole thing was bizarre. My advice is avoid this place if that’s how they treat customers. We will certainly be telling all our work colleagues exactly that.

Always a great experience. Food basic but adequate. Always a great selection of drinks at cheap prices. Staff brilliant.

Good place to eat a good breakfast

Ordered 3 chicken strips with jd sauce they failed to tell us there was no coleslaw and they wouldn't replace it with a side salad or anything else my mixed grill was over cooked and dry it has never been like this before but if it like it again I will not be going back

Brilliant place, atmosphere is cosy, very chilled too. The outdoor area is quote large too so there quite a lot to choose from in terms of seating. If you're ever out in Hitchin and fancy a drink or a bit to eat then this is the place to eat.

I wouldn’t usually, but I HAD to send my food back. The guy behind the bar was so hostile, I was standing there and he was just ignoring me, his colleague saw and told him I was waiting and his response was that he knew. I was the only person there. When they refunded me, he came to my table slammed the receipt down in front of me in front of my in-laws, mutter something as he stormed off. He made me feel so uncomfortable. I went back again since in hope for something else and he again was really hostile. When my husband had left my table to order at the bar, he reached over me and grabbed the menu from the back of my booth and took it away without acknowledging me. It’s just weird behaviour. Could cut the atmosphere with a knife. I don’t understand why anyone like him is working in hospitality. Wont be returning any time soon.

Bit hit & miss with the food; my fish & chips were really good but my partner's mash (served with the sausage) seemed to have been microwaved. Overall good value compared to other local hostelries.

Food beer and the place itself great and a fantastic location too

Three of us had burger 2 x 3oz 1 x 6oz to say they were over cooked is an understatement and chips which were very good, what was mistifing was no garnish so the whole plate was beige. My wife had Scampi and chips which she said was very good. 3hrs later on the way home I had a pizza.

Went for a late breakfast. Unusually quiet for a wetherspoons . Bacon and egg muffin ok . The side of Hash browns lovely.

Great prices good selection of drinks

After many years of Saturday morning breakfast unlikely to go again. Floor all sticky. Table worse. Food mostly cold. English muffin defrosted, densely solid and no more than 10mm thick. Pico de Galo was chopped onion and a chopped tomato and absolutely nothing else Coffee was tepid and watery. Caveat emptor at £4 I guess.

Staff always friendly and quick service. Food is very good for such a reasonable price. Kept clean and tidy. Love it!

This is an excellent Wetherspoons. Good food and friendly staff. They could teach other pubs nearby how to treat customers. Nice place with lots of outdoor seating, just off The Market Square in Hitchin and next to The Market Theatre. The photo is inside one part showing the second floor fireplace without the floor.... Making it a different sort of pub

Came here saturday afternoon for lunch ,tables sticky and unclean carpets dirty and was smelly ...ordered chicken breast burger unedible ,chicken had a weird taste and smelt funny ,chips cold ...I know the prices are reasonable here but no excuse for poor food ...this place needs a deep clean before someone gets ill

Lovely food. Went that extra mile when a staff member called Claire heard me coughing & brought over a glass of water! So kind & thoughtful.

Eaten here plenty of times pre-covid with no complaints but yesterday's jacket potato with cheese was the worst pub food I've ever had the misfortune of eating.. Over cooked, shriveled jacket, no butter, the biggest portion of diced hard, unmelted cheese, dumped on top making the entire dish cold. The salad was old, soft cucumber with red onion and tomato. I picked my way through it but left it as it was just so unenjoyable.. Very disappointed.

I would say higher than standard spoons in terms of location and decor. The service seemed pretty good for a busy Saturday night, though one staff member was clearly having a worse time than the rest of the kind and helpful staff. Prices are good and the garden is enormous! Great place to visit, doesn't feel like your in a spoons, feels alot nicer than a typical one.

Good service and food but cutlery dirty

Disappointing. Meal was microwave reheated, chips were soggy and chicken hard and dried out. Such a shame.

I went to Wetherspoons in Hitchin for which I thought was going to be a lovely meal with friends. It didn’t turn out this way! The waiters were rude and under trained bringing food over and chucking it on the table without stating what dish it was. While I was off my table getting salt for the table, a burger was delivered to the table, which was on my place of the table and everyone else had already received their food. I started to eat the burger which I believed to be mine. Later a waiter brings another burger over which is actually mine , and I had accidentally began to eat someone else’s burger which the waiter had put on my place on the bench. Despite this being the waiters fault , they demanded that I pay for an extra burger which was taken away from me by the waiter as it was not mine. The staff were rude, especially Adam the manager who continued to patronise me and ignore the situation and at one point he even asked me to ask the waiter to pay! I only ate a quarter of the 2 burgers which they made me pay for. I shall certainly not be returning. The waiter who delivered the wrong food was shuan and one of the rude managers was called Ashanti.
