This beautiful setting for Madama Butterfly is flawless, the old world look of the older dining area to the new restaurant made of glass paneling looks stunning. The production was truly magnificent with ticket prices ranging from about £12 standing room up to about £175 per ticket. Book as far in advance as possible, though you can sometimes get returns on the day.

Very nice staff , this ground floor restaurant ( with access ramp for the disabled ) serves the best gluten free and vegan cakes . At £20 for 3 , the quality of the food was excellent , and was much better than some crowded Costa with mass-produced food . Tables were well-spaced . And of course , the excellent opera house is there . The revived opera shop is to be recommended .

We ordered drinks from the cafe. The coffee was served in small clear insulated plastic cups. It was weak and pretty tasteless and expensive for the small serving. It also wasn’t hot enough. What a disappointment. We took our drinks upstairs to admire the view. The view was excellent but we won’t waste our money on coffee again.

Having booked to see The Sleeping Beauty we decided to treat ourselves to the special Sleeping Beauty Afternoon Tea which did not dissappoint. The setting itself is extrordinary and it was wonderful to wander around the venue and take in the building itself. The Afternoon Tea was fantasic, the attention to detail on the cakes and sandwiches stunning and even the tea itself amazing. I was so taken with the Red Velvet tea that was available that I have now ordered some directly from the provider. The staff at the restaurant were so attentive and did not rush us at all. The experience itself made a special day out with my mum even more special.

we booked for afternoon tea and it is a fabulous venue. The service was good also the pastries. We got 4 very small sandwiches. The scones were small served with a small pot of jam and 1 small scoop of cream on one plate for 2 people. We asked for more and were told they only make enough for each booking. It was very poor value. Aside from the views dont waste your time or money as you can find better value elsewhere.

Arrived deliberately early for ballet to relax with tea and something to eat in lovely cafe space. It was cold, the tables and counter areas were sticky and dirty and despite being very well staffed the service was very poor. A pot of tea translated to a very large double walled plastic beaker with no handle into which a teabags was dumped by disinterested staff. Sugar and milk is d- I-y, despite prices. The tea tasted revolting in the beaker. Moving on to the upper bar/cafe area we switched to coffee which was good- served in a cafetiere. However, again the tables were sticky, it was chilly and staff again stood around chatting loudly rather than serving customers. Cakes and sandwiches are reasonable quality but on the small side and very expensive. All in all a most disappointing experience. Why so many staff and such poor customer service and surroundings?

I was at Royal Opera House's Piazza Terrace Bar on last week for a beer and a mouse was under my table, when i mentioned this to the people in the bar they just told me that they are aware about the problem, they didn't even apologize...they have opened an area and they serve drinks and snacks while they are aware about this... Inappropriate, unhealthy and disgusting.

It's worth visiting the Royal Opera House's new self service cafe just to look at the fantastic new building which was opened in September 2018. When we were there they were offering carrot cake, brownies, five spice shortbread and filled rolls for tea. WE opted for the shortbread and the carrot cake which was v nice. The cup of tea not so - it comes in a glass with a tea bag and milk is in a large flask which was difficult to pour. Coffee has to be better! IT was the surroundings that made it so attractive. While you are there you can also go up to the open terrace that overlooks Covent Garden - well worth a trip. I think you can also have some refreshments there but not at the time we visited mid afternoon.

Escaped the cold and rain for a coffee in the open plan but nice and warm coffee area in reception. Lots of big tables and had to share like everybody else but that was fine and made it more friendly. Really nice coffee in insulated glass which kept it hot all the way through. Delicious cakes although we only had carrot cake with a dash of some alcohol (rum?) in which was great

To really enjoy the atmosphere at the Royal Opera House there is no better start to a magical evening than treating yourself to a light meal. It is special - the food and drinks are good - maybe quite expensive but worth every penny and so enjoyable on such an occasion. We love the upstairs restaurant where you can look down on all that is going on below.

It is a lovely setting in which to have afternoon tea. The sandwiches and cakes were good. It wasn't as relaxed as other afternoon tea venues I've been for but the service was good. I would suggest to go for a sitting time that is earlier. I chose a later time for us and once it started to empty the staff were clearing tables away for the evening which ruined the atmosphere a bit.

This beautiful building reminded me of the glass houses at Kew Garden - an expansive room with splendid high glass ceilings letting in the light, that made the chrome, steel and glass sparkle. We sat on the upper balcony. Having traversed Covent Garden on one of the hottest days this summer so far where the Piazza was thronging with people all enjoying the sights and sounds of the street entertainment, this area was perfect.Afternoon tea was a peaceful oasis of calm and tranquility with the sound of the piano being played and wafting around this truly spectacular room. After a welcome glass of Champagne our afternoon tea sandwiches arrived - a wonderful choice and as non meat eaters the engaging and friendly staff found alternatives. We were offered further supplies and these would have continued to come as we were offered more. However, we decided that two rounds met our needs and moved on to the wonderful scones with cream and jam with our tea choices. Tea choices were wonderful and plenty for the most discerning of palates. Our choices of patisserie looked small in size. However the richness of each was more than enough to round off our delightful afternoon tea and left us fully sated. As friends we decided to meet on a regular basis for afternoon tea - but never choosing to return to the same place. We particularly liked this venue for the environs and the afternoon tea more than met our expectations.I would thoroughly recommend this venue and cannot say that I agree with the previous commentators as our experience does not appear to have compared to their own.We were particularly surprised when we were each offered a box of the delightful patisserie to take home - but as they heat would have melted them decided on this occasion not to do so. Thank you everyone for a wonderful afternoon.

Went yesterday and the afternoon tea is very average. It's £37.50 without champagne and at this price point they should offer to refill sandwiches and cakes - they don't. The portions are very small, so you do need more than they provide. We asked for more sandwiches and the waitress almost seemed taken aback, eventually brought them, but only a half portion. All in all, you didn't even get what equated to a normal sandwich amount of food. The scones were dry. Cakes were ok. Champagne was pretty standard, starting at £13.50. It's a lovely setting, but not good value for money. Go to one of the London hotels instead.

We had the champagne afternoon tea, the champagne was very nice (Ruinart) and a good measure. However the sandwiches were a bit of disappointment rather small and not that full, the cakes and scones were ok, plenty of clotted cream and jam. It's ok if you are not too hungry. Staff and service were very good. The Paul Hamlyn Hall was a fantastic setting but overall not great value for money.

I found an offer for Afternoon Tea, including a free glass of champagne, on the internet. My friend and I were so excited, and so looking forward to what we thought was going to be an amazing experience. Sure enough, walking up the stairs and entering the Paul Hamlyn Hall under the barrel vault roof was amazing but, unfortunately, this proved to be the only amazing experience of our 90 minute stay. We were offered a choice of teas, and my companion, not able the 'Free-range egg and cress sandwich', was able to negotiate an alternative choice of sandwich to go with the 'Severn & Wye smoked salmon blini', the Salt beef, cornichon and sweet mustard sandwich' and the 'Cucumber and cream cheese sandwich'. We waited with baited breath for these to arrive. Imagine our disappoinment when two tea plates arrived with four of the tiniest morsels of food - and no offer of any replenishment when our plates were empty. The cakes that followed - 'Pistacio eclair with praline grains', 'Opera gateau', Madarin and kumquat amandine' and 'Apple and blackberry tart', along with the 'Traditional and fruit scones with Dorset clotted cream abd strawberry and plum jams' were equally minimal.Meanwhile, our pots of tea were losing heat rapidly whilst, quite honestly, needed to be refreshed. My friend and I had booked a 'slot' for 3.30pm, as we had planned to follow our Afternoon Tea with an evening concert on the Southbank, fully expecting our tea to sustain us through the evening. Wrong! I found myself mid-evening on Waterloo Station buying the biggest ham and cheese baguette I could find!Apart from the venue, and the exceptional and unobstrusive background piano playing, which we appreciated, this was a very disappointing experience indeed. Do not waste your money if you expect to leave feeling that you have eaten. You are paying only to admire your surroundings!
