Had noticed a couple of poor reviews on here but decided to go with the flow and booked a table for dinner with family. We were well looked after, the food was good quality, generous positions and served efficiently with a friendly smile. Seems all good to us!

Today I had breakfast at the Taw River Cafe •Eggs cooked perfectly with a lovely glaze and wet centre, tomato visibly seasoned with garlic and rosemary, local sausages, seared black pudding, thick cut moist bread, crispy bacon, seasoned beans, excellent service. 5* Yesterday I had lunch at the Taw River Pub located right next door, and would never have guessed it was under the same management. •a stale bun that was cold and unbuttered - why not grill the bun to order, or flash it through the oven for a minute with the juices of the patty so it's not dry? •2 overcooked, soggy patties that tasted of nothing - the flavour probably leeched away from being frozen and defrosted incorrectly •no lettuce, tomato, or pickle any of which is a pretty standard garnish •greasy chips that tasted of dirty frier oil •2 dry onion rings, probably from being fried sometime in the day, and then refried to order, or bought in prebattered? This took just under 30 minutes to arrive. I was so embarrassed I had to leave my whole plate of food and go. 0* It’s likely you have a breakfast chef who clearly enjoys what they do

Mixed bag, good pub sometimes! Was dependable and would be 5 star however 2 most recent visits have left air of mild disappointment. Arrived at 2pm, kitchen closed at 2:30, made to feel rushed and wouldn't let us order dessert even if ordered at the start. On another occasion, impromptu visit (hadn't prior booked), tables available and kitchen "open" but refused to serve food for one as had a "busy evening" Also doesn't serve Roast on Sundays!? Almost choked When they can be bothered with you food is good. Ale is good. Reasonably priced. Cosy and homely feeling.

Had lunch here today - chose v simple options - cheesy chips & pasty, chips & beans - as we needed to get to our destination for a certain time & then waited an hour for them to appear. It wasn't that busy - apparently, the order got lost. Even then the food wasn't great. Cheese was just grated over chips & not cooked at all so not melted at all. Beans almost spilling off plate. Very very underwhelming.

We have passed this pub many times over the years and always say next time we'll pop in for meal... Well yesterday was that day. We had a fantastic greeting by the lovely barmaid. A table was made available to us (very busy, but somebody didn't turn up) The menu was great and they had a good choice of specials top. My hubby had the steak and ale pie ... delicious and I had macaroni cheese which was so tasty. It was a lovely atmosphere and we will definitely be back.

Absolutely appalled... We visited this pub and restaurant for a meal after scattering my nans ashes and the service was horrific. We were told to phone our order ahead and when the meals came out wrong we were made to feel horrendous. We then (as don't like confrontation and a lot of confusion at the bar) had to pay for the majority of the meals without eating them! The attitude of the staff was completely unprofessional and the manager had no remorse either! Steer well clear! The veg clearly came from a tin and mash microwaved food cold etc etc the list goes on! Worst dining experience I've ever had I'd give it minus if I could.

I've been here a few times, we visited today as it was Mother's Day, and we love this pub as a friendly, local, cosy inn. The food is good and the staff are always friendly and helpful. Being it was Mothers Day, we tried to avoid the mainstream restaurants and on arriving we got a seat and asked to order food, as we hadn't booked the staff made sure that we would be able to get food and they came back to us and advised that they could fit us in but food might take a while. We appreciated the fact that they were able to accommodate us, so this wasn't a problem. We ordered drinks and patiently awaited our food, Double Bacon Burger, 16Oz Rump Steak, and a Kids nuggets, chips, and beans. This arrived within fair time, and as I said, the food was fantastic and we were too filled up to have a dessert but if we had room, we would have gone for the hot sticky toffee pudding and clotted cream (it's soooo indulgent!!) As always, this pub, the friendly staff, and the welcoming environment didn't disappoint, and we'll always come back here.

Harrowing experience here- owners are deeply homophobic. My friends and I have never felt this unsafe in a public space. Harassed, bullied, and kicked out a quiet group of people after targeting and accosting a visibly queer member of our party. There was no provocation whatsoever on our part and we’re deeply shocked. Grew up in a small village and have never experienced this level of bigotry in any rural pub. Came close to physical violence, including the owner’s son filming me and my friend, again, unprovoked. Very frightening.

The owners are bigoted, kicked a large group of us out on New Year’s Eve purely due to homophobia, where we once felt safe, they bullied us out and left us feeling disgusted despite being quiet with no provocations. Their actions were not ok - nothing about them were kind or respectful. Horrible behaviour.

Our 'local' for a week's stay & apart from one young 'lady' behind the bar on a particular afternoon who needs to brush up on her customer service & attitude the staff were friendly enough & efficient. We ate at the pub on a couple of occasions during our stay - it would have been more but we didn't book ahead other than for the Sunday lunch (didn't do roasts at the time which was .....different). Was almost totally booked out for food otherwise during the week & that is despite there being a separate dining room to the bar eating area. It meant that if you hadn't snagged a table you had to stand to have a drink in the middle of the busy bar room - the popularity with local people meant that it was unlikely to be 'at the bar' as invariably the bar seats which ringed the length of the bar, apart from the service hatch, were already taken. A dedicated serving-only area would have been useful as you had to push in over seated drinkers at times to get your glasses on the bar. I doubt the fact that the Devonshire Inn nearby never seemed to be open affected the volume of customers. The couple of meals we had were good to very good for the price & as said we would have eaten at the Taw River on more occasions had space allowed - there certainly was an extensive menu to ensure you wouldn't need to have the same thing twice on a week's holiday. There wasn't any marked delay from ordering to receiving the food & that's despite being so busy so a definite thumbs up. Good range of beers available & again reasonably priced for the area. It is a very dog-friendly pub so as long as you don't mind eating near a pooch then that would be OK. The pub building was characterful without being ancient with some nice features. The fire in the main bar would be very attractive in the winter, I'm sure. Sports fans are well catered for with 2 TVs in the main bar but in my experience, they were only on at non-intrusive times, e.g. not during Sunday lunch! I understand there is a large beer garden but due to the foul weather we had all week we didn't bother to seek it out.

This place is of outstanding value, food and beer are inexpensive, and they must just about break even because of the volume of sales. Saying that every table was full when we visited on a Thursday night, so booking is advised. A good selection of local ales - Black dog being very quaffable. When had the veggie chilli, with a mix of chips and rice, felt very Brit like ordering something with both rice and chips, but glad we did as the chips were amazing, perhaps some of the best I've ever had. Friendly service, an old pub feel and perfect for the area. Only downside was perhaps the lack of a veggie pie option, or veggie curry on the menu; it would have given more variety and ensured we came back a second day given how good the chilli was! Re visited in July 2023 and still continues to be great value, however, very sad to report those amazing chips have been replaced by bog standard skin on fires that are clearly from a frozen catering box. Still just as popular with those of elderly persuasion and that is likely to do with the value. Fortunately, the staff remain just as friendly as before.

Lovely pub. Great views of Dartmoor. Pub is in the middle of nowhere with nothing within a couple of miles each side. Good selection of drinks and interesting history about the place. Roast dinner was a little disappointing. Very crispy, hard to cut, dry roast potatoes, thin meat. Gravy just tasted like bisto and everything else tasted like it was supermarket frozen food. The fresh boiled veg was nice. Partner had rabbit pie, which was well filled and tasty. Chips weren't very tasty.
