Stopped over at Powdermills Pottery on our way home from Cornwall. What a wonderful place this is: we had hot Chocolate , coffe and a delicious root soup (no scones on the winter menu) and an insightful chat next to a crackling wood stove fire and came away with a beautiful piece of Joss' pottery and the firm plan to come back for one of her pottery courses (this was not a result of hard selling but pure enthusiasm on our side :-)

The scones here are some of the best I've ever tasted, fresh out 9f the oven, soft and warm. I had the ginger scones with rhubarb jam which were to die for. The crockery was all hand made which added to the authenticexperience. The service was so friendly too.

Just for the record: 23.02.2024 Still no money back... I would have loved to do a pottery course there and had booked my place. For health reasons, I cancelled my participation 9 days before (wrote an email on the 3rd of Januar which was answered by Joss same day) and asked whether it would be possible to get my money back as a gesture of goodwill, which Joss kindly promised me. However, this never happened and I wrote several emails asking in a friendly manner what would happen to the refund. These were never answered. I don't know, but I find this kind of behaviour intolerable, especially as you are supposed to keep your word, aren't you? PS: Strangely enough, Joss wrote me a strange email immediately after this review, but with no intention of keeping her word to refund me. I hope she invests the money well. So, your goodwill still stands? Your last email reads differently, to be honest quite offensive (by the way, telling the facts is not "bullying"): "My email dated 3 January - 7 working days before the course date, not the weeks your nasty little review states - still stands. Bullying does not increase feelings of goodwill, quite the reverse."

I've been here a few years back and enjoyed this place immensely - beautiful, very special pottery, also used for the cream tea (delicious). In the shop many additions from other artists. My favorite was the baskets. Who makes them I wonder? I never got an answer to that, sadly (I forgot to ask right in the shop). Ps: it's a common misconception that you cannot control the opening hours in Googlemaps. But if you click on them in the app it will say something like "change opening hours" (for every user!!!) in blue below (mine is in German so I cannot say what it says in English exactly) and voila.. You can change them to the right ones. It's not a big deal.

Visited this place with the plan to have a bite to eat and purchase some pottery. Ordered a tea cake and tea. Got a slice of fruit bread instead. Pottery shop had very little for sale and hugely overpriced. I understand it is artisan and producing the clay takes time, but for a tiny piece of unsigned pottery, giving no idea where it came from and starting costs of £55 no way

Visited twice whilst holidaying in the area. Excellent, generously portioned cream tea/coffee & excellent, friendly service. Lovely, unique pottery items for sale - added another Pony to my collection! So nice to talk to someone knowledgeable with a passion for what they do! Masks are required not optional when inside the shop & hand sanitizer is provided, seating is outdoors only & is sufficiently spaced so this is as safe a place to visit as you could want. Wish more venues would operate this way - NT would do well to note! This is a little gem of a place run by a very caring lady, don’t miss it if you’re in the area.

We stopped here, just off the road between Postbridge and Princetown, just for a cream tea. The tea itself was uncomplicated and tasty: the scones were nice and light. The pottery used added to the occasion - attractive robust, earthy, look to it. We enjoyed the moorland view whilst eating our tea. Reasonably priced too.

Passed by this while walking out of the Powder Mills and decided to stop in. What a lovely place! It's a handmade pottery studio as well as a cafe offering homemade cream teas, cookies, and cakes that were delicious. There is also a small exhibit about the Dartmoor hill ponies and they sell horse meat (ask the owner to explain why, she is very passionate about biodiversity and sustainability and I learned a lot about the ponies just from listening to her). Dogs are allowed! It offers pottery classes on the weekends (inquiry needed). Anyways this was a nice stop along my way and the scones were amazing.

Great spot to stop by on our ride across Dartmoor.Nice snack, either sweet or savoury, usually cheese scones with soft cheese for savoury. Then scones with cream and syrup among the few available.Good cakes and a decent slice. To top it all, they produce some lovely earthenware pottery. Also figurines of rams and ponies/horses.Then if that wasn’t enough, there’s a room with Dartmoor pony information etc. With the lovely location and scenery, you can relax with all this space out there.

We stopped at this unusual place , set back off the B3212 going south-west out of Postbridge, after a walk up the nearby Bellever Tor and each enjoyed a cream tea that comprised a real home made devon scone [no fruit], home made jam and of course luscious Devonshire clotted cream. As the weather was a little inclement we sat inside the café which essentially doubles as a display room for the wonderful hand made pottery and paintings of local scenes and animals [horses and sheep with incredibly shaped horns] by a cadre of artisits who I believe dwell locally, that are for sale. An interesting place and worth every penny of the £15 it cost us and the loveliness of the art we enjoyed. There is a toilet provided outside in an adjoining building.

We driven past this place regularly for the past 20 years and today we stopped for the first time. The main business is the pottery showroom, exhibiting the works of 30 potters and artists. Outside (inside in inclement weather) are three large round tables seating up to eight persons each. It's a rustic setting but all the more charming for that. Menu offers good selection of teas and other hot drinks, cookies, tea cakes and, of course, scones. A scone with clotted cream and strawberry jam is £2.70. Tea is £1.95. All crockery used is from the pottery itself. Recommended.

The tea and refreshments are really super; tea tastes like tea, not coloured hot water and scones are warm and delicious - not made of mouth tingling wheat but soft and nice. Lashings of cream and jam and so on. Winter food options are delicious home made too. Nice honest and satisfying place to snack. Prices are actually very reasonable.

After a long walk over the hills, I was so looking forward to my first cream tea in ages. I was also looking forward to finding a birthday present for someone. When I arrived, it seemed lovely! However, no one appeared to be having tea- they were all wandering round the shop. A sign on the door said ambiguously to take a seat on blustery days and someone would take an order. Well, no one was seated, and it wasn't a blustery day, and actually I felt quite awkward. It was unclear who was serving the teas or who the owners were. One lady who i think may have been the owner, was chatting about the dog to a man visiting, but in order to ask about tea, I would have had to interrupt their conversation. Really, it doesn't seem ok that somewhere should say it offers teas but then appear not to offer them when you arrive. As a socially anxious single traveller, it can be hard to find welcoming places- but this seemed so promising! I'd be very interested to know whether I misunderstood something?(Maybe teas weren't being served today?)

I've now told so many people. We went with the aim of having cream tea but when my dad and I saw cheese scones as an alternative we were torn. So mum and hubby had the cream and we indulged in the cheese. Both were very good. The jam and cream are sourced locally. All for only £2.45 each. The tea is West Country too and was served in the pottery made by owner Joss. Unfortunately she is so busy during the summer doing teas etc that she doesn't make any pottery and only fires in the winter. I visited here on Sunday 9 June, which happened to be a lovely sunny day. The cafe was so busy I had to share a large table with a German couple and their adorable black Labrador. The cream tea with clotted cream and butter, strawberry jam and 2 home-made scones was really delicious, as well as substantial. All the pottery was made on the premises which added more charm to the meal. One lovely touch was that my German friend's dog was not forgotten as their tea was served with an extra plate on which there was a bone shaped biscuit! The pottery itself is very interesting and the swallows flying in and out of the workshop feeding their young added an extra attraction! I have attached 2 photos showing how isolated the Powdermills on Dartmoor. From the cafe there are some great walks either up to the top of the neighbouring Tor, or round the back of the cafe to the old Powdemill's buildings which is far less strenuous.

Came in for Sunday roast and food was 10/10, best roast we have had for quite a while. What lacked was the service. We booked for 3pm and whilst we appreciate we entered at a busy time wrapping up peak time, service received wasn’t great from the off. One particular server seemed to be in quite a mood and was remarkably blunt “no” when we asked questions about getting some extra yorkshires (which we were a bit surprised the pork meal didn’t come with, but our fault for not reading the menu properly!) Plus someone seemed to think it was a great idea to loudly polish/sort out the cutlery at the bar, which was right next to our table, making conversation quite difficult and picked up by all 4 members of our party. Shame as food was amazing and would go back, but service lacked. 3pm bookings just as important as 12pm as all paying the same!
