Beautiful place and restaurant. The only issue is, when choosing a piece of steak, we were told that the only way chef would cook it, is the only way chef would eat it. Which meant rare. I don’t like rare, and my husband hates it. We came to a compromise. Unfortunately when served, it wasn’t rare, it was raw. This cost £100! I just wish that I had been served food that I enjoyed eating. Unfortunately I won’t return. We have supported this establishment and the chef, but we felt that we just weren’t listened to. Indeed we were told next time the chef would only cook to his desire for each cut. It’s a bit of a liberty, especially when you try to support local. Maybe listen to your customers.

After walking on Dartmoor, I popped in for a quick pint with the family before heading home, but bizzardly wasn't allowed to sit inside anywhere to drink it even though they had empty tables. We ended up outside in the cold instead. What looks like a pub is a steak restaurant, but real shame they don't cater for folks just wanting a passing pint while on the Moor.

We stayed at the Inn with our dog and completely loved our stay. We were given the Kings Tor room with a beautiful view of Merrivale! We also dined downstairs and spent time having drinks. The staff were wonderful and went out of their way to accomodate us with everything. From constantly being on computers for work it was a lovely difference to have no TV in the room for the two days we were there and slept peacefully even with the noise from the Inn down below, which proved this is a lively and popular place, I loved it!! Looking forward to returning next year :)

👌 Yet again another fabulous steak cooked on the fire in front of us. Chef Frankly and his partner Lowri and their very professional team make the dining experience exceptional. We all had superb, succulent and very tasty Steaks that were cooked to perfection, served with a lovely fresh salad in a separate bowl, and ‘real’ chips made with ‘real’ potatoes, which were amazing. Peppercorn sauce is included too. Everything was served piping hot and none of us could fault it in anyway at all. I would highly recommend visiting and eating here at the moment. Franky and his team are exceptional, we have visited the other Pubs when Franky has been the chef there and we have always been VERY impressed, hence following him to his current position at Dartmoor Inn Merrivale (NOT to be confused with Dartmoor Inn at Lydford).

Booked a table to eat in for two people on the same day on a Saturday. Was accepted. Easy to navigate on the website. Arrived 10mins before time, instantly greeted and shown to our table by really friendly staff who were knowledgeable about different drinks and our meal. Sirlon and ribeye both 10oz were ordered and we saw them being cooked on a wood cindered ox grill. Our food was really nice, helped with the superior steaks on offer that you could view before and during cooking. Desserts we had were chocolate tart and clotted cream and a cheese board, again exceptional. I even cheekily asked for a few more oat biscuits to finish off my cheeses and they obliged with a smile. To summerise both my wife and myself throughly enjoyed the afternoon and will be returning to sample more food delights. Thankyou all.

Whilst wishing to write a review on the Dartmoor Inn, there's not much that I can say that hasn't already been written by people far more qualified than I. This place had amazing reviews a couple of years ago and I tried to get there (work frustrated that). When I found an opportunity, it had closed and the Chef had left. He is now back. I attended last evening with my wife and son (on his birthday. They didn't know where they were going. We were warmly welcomed and had great customer service from 'The off'. My son seems to eat his own weight every day and was mesmerised by the array of steak cuts on display in the display/cooled cabinet. His eyes lit up at the Tomahawk steak (for two), but much as I love him, It was that big that I knew I wouldn't do it justice but he would. I couldn't cope with the thought of him eating two thirds of it! so we had 2 Ribeyes. Both just amazing. The steaks are from Philip Warren (which for those who know, tells its own story). My son (who is an expert on these things), said it was the best steak he has had. This is a great place with a superb Chef and great staff. I look forward to our next visit.

Arrived at 7pm, ordered cocktails from the menu, told they have no mint, so ordered espresso martini, arrived in 30 seconds warm, queried this to be told they had no ice! Asked If it was out of a can, told 'no' but didn't hear a shaker, despite sitting very close to the bar. They re-made the drinks colder this time, acceptable, but not great. Ordered scallops £12 for 2 no bigger than 1p, tasty but small. Also, watched a waitress clear and relay a table without wiping it, holding forks by the prongs. I could see food and grease from the previous customers still on the table from where I was sitting. Not the evening out we expected. We also had to use the torches on our phones to read the menu as the area where we were seated was very dark. Having previously visited The Ship Inn, where we felt standards were quite high, this evening at the Dartmoor Inn was very disappointing. Poor service, poor hygiene and tiny portions. Sadly won't be visiting again.

I told my son, who frequently uses the parks for hiking, that I would make this a go to stop each time if I were them. Staff is very friendly. The menu, is quite surprising as it goes between pub food to first class AAA cuts of steak. Everyone was very content with their orders which came quite promptly. Again, this is a must stop if you are visiting the park.

This place is brilliant (so long as you love meat!) I smiled deeply to find a butchers table full of prime cuts of beef, bought from a Dartmoor local who happened to win Butcher of the year UK. There's something wonderful about eating meat you know had a decent life roaming the moors. Especially after a long walk yourself. Finishing our walk here felt like a perfect pairing, although I'd love to see the wine list expanded a little! No complaints on service or food. The meat was obviously amazing, cooked in front of you on an open fire, served with a well dressed salad and tasty chips. The deserts were pretty special too, creme brulee done properly and roasted pineapple, what's not to love. Felt like a hearty place, run by decent blokes who care about their offering. Looking forward to returning and taking friends to devour a tomohawk!

We ate at about 2pm on a weekday during the summer holidays so it was pretty quiet when we were there (I think there was one other group eating). We also had our dog with us. The staff were really friendly and attentive and the food came relatively quickly (as a larger group we had ordered ahead of our booking as requested by the restaurant). Half of our group ordered steak dishes and we enjoyed seeing the chef cooking the food so close to our table. The food itself was really tasty and everyone enjoyed our time there. I gave 4 stars as we felt that the food and the drinks were a little pricier than they deserved.

having been many times before we were very excited about our evening booking. When we arrived we noted it had been newly decorated and we were pleasantly greeted by the new owner who explained he was a local cow farmer and had been involved in the restuarant for a while. Unfortunetly, after waiting a while (which we dont mind) the food started to come out in dribs and drabs. meaning that one had finished by the time the last meal came and it was clear the quality of the food was not what we were used to there. The steaks were small and overcooked, the seasonal veg that previously was delicious local veg was now boiled frozen veg, the lovely local drinks have been replaced with pepsi and branded beer, the chips previously handmade were what I can only describe as re fried oven chips and were actually not edible oh and the price was no longer good value. Very disapointing as it had been our favourite spot. I really hope this feedback will help them get it back to its former glory!

We were booked in to stay here for the first night of a 3day walking trip. The first leg was 19miles, and we experienced weather ranging from hot sun to a downpour. Catching sight of the Dartmoor Inn as we came down the final section of the moors that day felt like a magical moment. Its location next to the old quarry was so cool! It was the perfect rest stop. The room, while basic, was comfy and had such a great view! Our dog loved looking out and Spotting roaming sheep, geese and some chickens. The food was delicious, as was the wine. We had the chateaubriand, cooked perfectly. Overall, a very warm, welcoming spot that offered the exact tonic that these weary walkers needed.

(4 burgers and one sole.) The restaurant was quite empty and no one at the outside eating areas when we arrived. When the food did arrive it was barely warm, and the triple cooked chips were quite soft. £18 for a burger and chips. One person had sole which was quite dry and full of bones. Won’t be going again. Think MacDonalds would have done better at a fraction of the cost.

I took my mother here just after mother’s days for a Mother’s Day lunch as a treat . As we walked in we were greeted by our first problem the plump of smoke from the meat cooking which Hoovered over us for the entire stay making for a congested atmosphere. Secondly when the food arrived it was cold ish but didn’t mind as we’re both hungry so we lived with it and the food was nice ( not top notch but nice ). All in all a not bad experience and the staff are nice even tho busy !! Thirdly and here is why such a low star review. We paid for our meal and left on returning home I noticed we had been over charged for a drink we had not consumed . This may not seem a lot but a large glass of organic wine isn’t that cheap and added nearly £10 to the cost of the meal. I contacted the manager who apologised and reassured me that they would refund me .. great no issues there ! But this never happened and after a quite a few emails and reassurances they would make this right it still has not been rectified and now communication has completely stopped so still no refund. A most disappointing experience with the Dartmoor Inn at Merrivale. Having booked in April for a 28-30 June visit, I was unavoidably required to cancel. Aware of the booking cancellation policy of 7 days notice, my cancellation was over 8 weeks. Having requested a refund, the initial response from the Dartmoor Inn was positive, however after 4 weeks, three unanswered emails and three ignored phone messages, no refund was given. I was forced to approach my bank and submit a “dispute” which was resolved within 2 days, with me receiving my refund; no thanks to the Dartmoor Inn. It may or may not be a great place. It may or may not do good food. The lesson however I pass on is don’t expect a legitimate refund, without unnecessary hassle and frustration.

We visited on a Saturday lunch-time in April. Arrived to a quiet pub with a few drinkers and an empty restaurant, which was a bit unusual but fine as it was still early. Two of us sat down to eat, in which we were shown to a table in a quiet corner away from the main restaurant. Whilst a nice view out the window, it felt a weird choice given the rest of the pub was empty. Service was polite and friendly and drinks were always brought over speedily and with a smile. However, the food took a long time to come, having sat down at 12:15 we didn’t get our food until gone 1:30. While the food was excellent and very well done, we felt over 50 minutes from ordering food to eating to be too long, especially for a lunch of a chicken salad and a burger. This was exacerbated by the fact there was no one else in when we sat down, so who knows how long everyone else was waiting. The biggest problems we had with our time at the Dartmoor Inn was that the door to the toilets was constantly slamming every time someone went through. Interrupting conversation and making us jump, a particular problem for my frail mother. Together with the slow food we ended up rushing to eat and feeling a bit sour with the whole experience. Food and drinks were excellent and a big improvement to the drinks especially since before they reopened when beer and soft drink selections used to be poor.

Popped in for lunch during the week and we're pleasantly surprised. We chose the olives and breads to start and we're presented with a large wooden platter with a nice selection of olives, olive oil, humus and warm breads, very nice. As it was lunch we ordered in the rare beef baguettes. The chef carefully cut the beef off the joint and then cooked and prepared our selection on the open fire which again we didn't expect. The end result was delicious. Washed down with a nice pint of real ale it made for a nice lunchtime. Friendly staff and great chef. We look forward to visiting again one evening. Many thanks.

Let me tell you about my experience at this "restaurant" - if you can call it that. I walked in expecting to be greeted by the aroma of sizzling steaks and the promise of a carnivorous feast. Instead, I was hit with a wave of disappointment stronger than the smell of overcooked beef. Beef is also a generous term, I don't where they now source this from, but it looks as though they pick it off the side of the road. First off, the ambiance. It felt like I'd stumbled into a butcher's nightmare. The lighting was so dim I half-expected a family of bats to swoop down and join me for dinner. Now, let's talk about the menu. It was like a meat lover's dream gone wrong. The selection was as limited as my patience waiting for my meal to arrive. And when it did, I swear I could hear the cow mooing in protest from the afterlife. My steak looked like it had been run over by a lawnmower before being served to me. In conclusion, if you're looking for a good steak, steer clear of The Dartmoor Inn. You're better off eating cardboard – at least it won't leave a bad taste in your mouth.

It was a quiet, rainy Friday on Dartmoor. We had heard good things about the Dartmoor Inn. Warm greetings, choice of tables, the Red Wine was surprisingly good (house merlot/granache blend), and reasonably priced. My partner had read the Evening Menu and had her heart set on the Chateaubriand, not on the lunch menu, but the kind staff and chef made it available, and it was gorgeous... medium rare on the rare side.... perfect! As was the Tomahawk (also only supposed to be on the evening menu), cooked on what looked like an open fire. If you go, also try the fish cakes, the best I have ever had and I am from Nova Scotia, land of the fish cake! It has top service, top food, and a view that uniquely encompasses the landscape of Dartmoor. We will soon return.

We travelled over an hour to dine here. We previously came here back in May and it was amazing. This time though there were new owners and it was being run very poorly. No one seemed to know what they were doing. The meat came to us quite quickly but straight away we could see it was nothing like we had before. We had maybe 3 small slices of beef each, what was described on the menu and what we had previously was a sirloin joint between us. We waited for the veg to arrive and quite quickly we realised we weren't getting any as it was delivered to the wrong table. Our meat was cold by the time the veg arrived. We tried to eat as much as possible but it wasn't very good. You can see the difference in between the meals in the pictures. Certainly won't be in a hurry to go back. The waiting staff were really nice and kept apologising they took our drinks off the bill but that was it after calling the manager over we thought we may of had more taken off the bill. Because £48 was too much for what we had. The first picture is what we received and the second picture is what we had before. Overall it was poor.

We visited for lunch today having waited ages for them to revamp. Honestly a bit disappointed as we had high expectations after previous visits. All the staff are new, the food wasn’t as exceptional as it used to be, the staff were clearly inexperienced apart from the chef. I then saw on the bill that Soil & Sea were now the owners which I don’t think are linked to Eversfield organic. Bit of a shame as we travelled for over an hour to get here.

Lovely setting and a nice warm surrounding when you enter. We booked on line and was happily taken to our table. It was busy and we waited a long time for our food to arrive which wasn't a problem as the 4 of us chatted away. Our drinks came all correctly then the fire alarm started going off which was funny and all the windows had to be thrown open. Then our food arrived which were first the vegetables, then after about 10 minutes the waitress came apologising that these dishes were for the table next to us, OK, genuine mistake so we started passing it all over! Then another half hour our food came out. The meat looked lovely all cut on boards, the red cabbage was lovely and plenty of it, but we had a relatively small bowl of cauliflower cheese which was no way enough for 4 people, carrots and parsnips just enough and roast potatoes with a nice large Yorkshire pudding each and gravy. The plates were brought to us cold, and by the time it was brought all together to our table, the food was cold unfortunately. We shut the window to try and help, but it was all too cold. I had Lemon Torte with ice cream for dessert but the ice cream was missed off. For the four of us the bill came to £142 which to be honest was not worth the money and certainly not value for money. We didn't drink any alcohol and each had a soft drink. I don't mind paying at all, but what we had here certainly didn't live up to that. We'll not be returning and we're fairly local, so a shame really.

We stayed there for one night, passing through Dartmoor. The staff was very accomodating and the food was terrific (and I'm vegan, they served a roasted cauliflower that tasted amazing). You can walk from there to and old quarry, where you can see the whole valley.

Decided last minute to visit on a very quiet Thursday lunchtime. Staff friendly and welcoming. Both of us opted for the sirloin steak. Served with triple cooked chips and leafy salad. Steaks cooked to perfection and very tasty. Meats supplied by farm close by. Special mention goes to the chocolate & Jack Daniels crème brûlée dessert - naughty! Although, the lemon tart was also very good. Would highly recommend you check out this little rustic gem.

Met some friends here at the weekend. Our first visit but friends had been before. Really rustic, friendly, fun pub. Chef working on an open fire and a butchers block. We had the sirloin roast dinner for 4 people. The most fantastically cooked toast I’ve eaten in my life. The meat was perfect, pink, seasoned well and lots and lots of it! Small selection of Ales but perfectly kept and delicious. Waiting staff were efficient, attentive, supper friendly. There’s a great few walks straight on the moor here too. Can’t wait to book again!

Well….I was certainly not surprised tonight by my trip to this hostelry. The food was exemplary. Had very similar at other venues….but nowhere near the quality I ate tonight. Yes, they deserve all of the praise they can muster. The Chef…what a gent he was. Very knowledgable and oozing with Scottish talent. The ladies serving were very polished with excellent attention to detail….. may I be at liberty to say……very pretty indeed. Made me feel exceptionally welcome…..I shall of course return….. thank you xx

Absolutely enchanting and magical corner of the Moor - very friendly and warm service without it feeling forced or insincere. I felt very welcome when I arrived cold and wet after a long morning's walk in the rain - it made for a perfect lunch (I can recommend the wild mushroom risotto, and Norwegian Wood to wash it down). I set off in the rain much cheered after drying out and I cant wait to return, and enjoy once again the clear thought and energy which underpins the congenial, convivial formula of this delightful Inn. Thank you.

Hands down the best steaks we've ever had! They were cooked in front of us on a charcoal burner. My son is interested in food and the chef let him watch him prep and cook the steak, it was brilliant. It wasn't all about the steak. The starters were delicious and the puddings divine. The service was great too. All round, 5 stars!

Such a warm welcome from the all the staff at this excellent pub. We stayed the night and the rooms although basic did the job after a long stomp over Dartmoor. Lovely hot showers and comfortable beds. The food was really excellent and we enjoyed choosing our steaks which were cooked to perfection on the open fire. Literally melt in the mouth rib-eye and a cheeky sherry sauce along with triple cooked chips and salad. The accompanying red wine went down very well too. We cannot fault the superb staff and knowledgeable chef who could not do enough to provide a warm and friendly atmosphere where nothing was too much trouble. We hope to visit again soon.

Absolutely top quality organic beef, perfectly prepared and professionally served. Probably the best steak and chips I've had in my life, and that's speaking as a self proclaimed connoisseur with decades of experience. Superb!

My partner and I came here on a Saturday night for a treat, having heard good reviews. We were not disappointed! From the moment you arrive, steak is at the heart of the evening- there is an incredible open grill displaying the steaks available that day, and they all look mouthwatering. My partner had scallops to start and would have happily demolished another plate or two. I had bruscetta, which was fresh and lively. We then shared a Chatuebriand and I will be dreaming of this steak for weeks. It was butter-soft, perfectly cooked and so flavourful. The accompanying sauce was just right and the chips were hot, crispy and plentiful. Service was attentive and friendly, but not overbearing. Overall, a great meal and somewhere we will definitely return to in the future.

12 of us lunched to celebrate a milestone birthday Food was excellent - especially the steaks ! Staff were friendly whilst being efficent and professional. Two couples stayed overnight and enjoyed more bovine products for dinner. Again - excellent watching the food being cooked on an open fire. Rooms were good ( only 5 available) and breakfast first class. Not that expensive and we would certainly return. (Gonna try a "Tomahawk Steak !)

My husband and I went today for our 5 year anniversary meal after being told about it by friends. It did not disappoint. Specialising in steaks. We sat on the ‘chefs table’ right next to where he was cooking the meat in an open fire to absolute perfection. We had the Brie sharing starter and then followed it with the sharing chateau briand 👌 never had a steak as nice. Can’t recommend this place enough. We can’t wait to come back.

This was an experience of highs and lows. My husband had a fabulous ploughman’s with about 4 thick slices of delicious home cooked ham, godminster cheddar, a boiled egg, bread, pickles, chutney and coleslaw for £16.50. I had a small bowl of chips, a mushroom,3 slices of tomato, a smear of cheese and some (undressed) watercress for £18.50. This was a truly tiny meal and was a substitute offered when neither of the quiches at £9.50 were available. We did contact them about this and they responded that food prices are going up. Apparently one mushroom is more expensive than ham, egg and cheese. Staggering. We had a pleasant time but much of the service is amateurish and a number of the foods and drinks on the menu were unavailable. The staff seem to prefer talking at the customers about the provenance of their offerings than actually listening to what the customer wants - 2 out if 3 of the drinks we ordered had issues. One of the servers was extremely good and did the place credit, and we were given a free half pint because of the wait. This has the makings of a really good business but really needs to address some of these issues.

A mixed experience. The good bits: delicious top-quality steak on sourdought - both of which you'd expect to be excellent, as this business is owned by Eversfield Organics. Nice staff. Wonderful view. But the downers were: salad dressing that tasted supermarket made, ruining the home-grown leaves, greasy chips that definitely weren't hand-made, strings of flashing fairy-lights overhead and pop music. With a few tweaks, this could have been a lovely meal, but without them we left feeling disappointed. Also, serving food on slates is both passe and difficult for waitresses to handle. Afraid we prefer the other Dartmoor Inn at Lydford.

Totally amazing evening. Went for the steak on the stone and wow, absolutely awesome. I'd been to steak on the stone years ago in Scotland and was amazed that there was one in Plymouth and totally loved the service we recieved from Sam and his team on a Monday evening. I will be recommending this place to everyone. When you go try the cimichuri sauce.❤️❤️❤️

Beautiful steak and wonderful service. Possibly one of the best steaks I've had despite the Chef saying they where not the best that night (would love to try it when he thinks its great), expertly cooked over the open fire in the middle of the pub and served with some lovely chips and salad. Wine selection was also great. So good we are going back next week hoping for a repeat experience.

Chanced upon this place whilst returning from a trip to Cornwall, and we intend to go back. The food was outstanding. We had the Chateaubriand and it was superb. The weather was typical Dartmoor (i.e. throwing it down) but the food was perfect. The dining area where we sat was fairly basic, but the staff were friendly, which made for a warm atmosphere against the backdrop of the miserable weather outside. We intend to go back and stay for a night literally just for the food.

Oh how we wish we hadn’t simply interrupted a long journey for a quick snack! We would happily have been tempted to a lazy and delicious meal here. As it was, hand cut chips cooked with roasted garlic and sprigs of rosemary were the most scrumptious we have ever eaten. We would also like to say thank you for the really warm welcome we received and the excellent service.

Came in for Sunday roast and food was 10/10, best roast we have had for quite a while. What lacked was the service. We booked for 3pm and whilst we appreciate we entered at a busy time wrapping up peak time, service received wasn’t great from the off. One particular server seemed to be in quite a mood and was remarkably blunt “no” when we asked questions about getting some extra yorkshires (which we were a bit surprised the pork meal didn’t come with, but our fault for not reading the menu properly!) Plus someone seemed to think it was a great idea to loudly polish/sort out the cutlery at the bar, which was right next to our table, making conversation quite difficult and picked up by all 4 members of our party. Shame as food was amazing and would go back, but service lacked. 3pm bookings just as important as 12pm as all paying the same!

The restaurant was recommended to me and did not disappoint. First class, friendly service and excellent food. The online menu seemed limited but there were plenty of other options on the specials board.
