Tate's Fish Restaurant in Boston

Order was wrong, batter was soggy, no sugar given with coffee and toilet bottom was black. One and only time I will go

The fish was fresh and very tasty with right amount of crisp in the batter which didn't make it oily. The lady who served us was really lovely and welcoming even though we walked in half hour before closing time on a Sunday.

Decided to treat myself to a tray of tates chips as I was in town doing a spot of shopping, it was the worst tray of chips I've ever had, cold ,greasy and over cooked, Bob Tate was always the best in town , not anymore

I know when a business changes hands you can expect a few teething problems but the service and quality should remain high- sadly here neither was. The food had a very odd taste- like gone off- maybe it’s just the oil that needs changing but not pleasant. We were frequent visitors as we got great food all the time- now a little weary

BEWARE! If you have celiac disease do not go here! They offer a so called gluten free menu. Let me tell you that is not true! Been vilantly ill for hours. I will be reporting this business to trading standards and the local council. Disgusting. Staff were nothing but rude too.

Its as good as it’s always been. Good size portions and friendly staff. I know ownership/management has recently changed which may have led to a few issues but it would appear all the creases are now ironed out

Actually, this is 2 reviews in one. Visited early August, knowing Sam has gone, wonder if the quality is just as good. The taste was not the same as when Sam was here, just similar to many other fish & chips restaurants, but it was okay. This time, I found the oil had a slight rancid taste. It points to the fact they're not changing the oil like when Sam was here. Hope it was just a small hiccup for the new fryer.

Called in on a quiet Tuesday tea time. We ordered a large haddock each, we shared a portion of chips, mushy peas each and a cup of tea each. The fish was freshly cooked, as were the chips. The fish tasted really fresh, the batter was crispy. The chips were perfect and there wasn’t a spot of grease to be seen anywhere. The mushy peas were the proper degree of mushiness, and their taste was excellent. The only down side was the tea, it came with milk already added, too much milk as it happened. All in all a real treat, shame about the tea, but that wouldn’t stop me visiting again.

Lovely fish and chips take away again, and Sam never lets me down when he's on the fryer doing the frying. Won't go in if he's not there.

Myself and my partner had our lunch here because, previously, my partner said it had been a nice place to eat and was always busy over the weekend. The restaurant was empty, apart from one table, when we entered at lunch time. We ordered and then sat down in the restaurant inside to eat. The food took a long time to come for a fish and chip shop! The chips were under fried as were the battered sausages. I, myself, ordered a jacket potato. I noticed on the menu that it stated the jacket potatoes come with butter and garnish (which to me is a side salad). When the jacket potato arrived, as requested there was no butter on it but the garnish/side salad was missing. I asked the man serving politely why there wasn’t any side salad with it and he said I should have told him if I wanted side salad. I replied that I didn’t think I needed to tell him that I wanted it as the menu listed it as part of the dish. A side salad was brought to me after some attitude from the man serving.

Popped in Saturday lunch time as haven’t been for a couple of years, seated easily downstairs as upstairs was closed. The fish was nice with crispy batter, the chips were okay but a little cold. We ordered cold drinks, just a can arrived - no glass! I needed the toilet but didn’t use it as it was vile, I’ve not seen anything that grim in a long time 🤢 If we had not already eaten I think it may have put me off as I now question the general hygiene of this once perfect food outlet. Probably won’t visit again even though this has been a favourite for 40+ years.

We don’t live locally, but when we are Boston, we look forward to a Fish and Chip lunch at Tate’s. We won’t do this again, it was so disappointing, the chips and fish were OK, but not great (as they used to be) but the curry sauce was more like soup!! On a Saturday lunchtime it used to be packed on 2 floors, but on this occasion just a couple of tables downstairs. What a shame, it used to be a highlight on the high street.

The worst chips I have ever had disgusting oily small bits cheap potatoes for sure. Will never go back again Asked for cod and was given haddock which was inedible chewy with wet batter.

Stayed in Boston for the day and saw the reviews for this chip shop. We had fish and chips and mushy peas. There was also gluten free batter. They provided ample portions and tasty food. There is inside and outside seating.

We sat outside and ate our mini fish and chips. To be fair the mini fish didn't seem that much smaller than a full size portion. The chips were really good. However, the batter on the fish was soggy with only one end crispy, the mushy peas weren't so mushy. Service was prompt and they appeared go be serving from three different points. As busy as they were we didn't notice any one having to wait as something had ran out and was still in the frier. So don't be put off by the queue.

We stopped by here Sunday lunchtime. we loved that the chips were crinkled. the mini fish and chips were delicious and plentiful, enough for an adult to eat. will definitely go back when next in the area

This chip shop is well worth visiting. Very clean, staff friendly and helpful, food very good. Lots of choice on menu, seating downstairs and upstairs as well as outside. Prices good 😁.

With so many of my local chippies dropping their standards to eat here was a real delight. My daughter who isn't a big chip fan ate all of hers including the curry sauce which she would normally never try and the mother in law who has a small appetite cleaned her plate. Will be back on our next trip to Boston.

We have been going to Tate's for many years and consider them the best in town. However, after all the hype about another chip shop re-opening in the market place we decided to check it out for ourselves. We can categorically say that whilst the food at the 'new place' was OK it still fell short of the award winning offerings from Tates. At Tates, not only is the food superior, the portion sizes and prices are also more favourable.

We were a party of 14. We all enjoyed our meal, mostly of fish and chips. The staff were attentive, if a little busy with other customers. When we left we were thanked for our custom.. We will return.

3 of us decided to pop in today after noticing this place on our way into town. We always like to try new places out and we were not disappointed on this occasion! We waited around 15minutes for our food which came out perfectly cooked and piping! Lovely, quiet and homely atmosphere. The staff are a credit to the place- the lady who took our order clearly enjoyed her job and it showed. We even got a goodbye from the staff at the counter on the way out, no awkward exit. We have already made plans to return on our next visit to Boston. Thanks to the staff a lovely lunch out.

Visited on a Monday lunchtime, ate inside. We both had fish chips & curry, very reasonable prices. Me & my friend enjoyed our meals and will be returning sooner rather than later, thanks Sam!

Been a good chip shop for years. Went downhill for a bit, but now Sam is back, its as good as its ever been.

After visiting several months ago & eating in the restaurant and being extremely disappointed to the point where we sent the whole order back we thought we’d try some chips as we had heard that Sam had retuned & the chippy had returned to its former excellent standard .We were not disappointed as the had cut crinkle chips were golden brown , fresh , red hot & plentiful. The restaurant was packed & so were the outside tables .We will now be returning to try the fish as it looked so nice . Keep up the good work !

Been using Tate for a number of years now and never had a bad meal, the staff are always friendly, but I do find it quite expensive in the restaurant area.

I have had many a sit down and take away meal from here. Always fresh and tasty. Sometimes you have to wait because of people needing serving but on the whole it's worth the wait.

I have been going to Tates since i was about 6 years old with my parents and enjoyed every meal, i am now 50 and since chaging hands the resteraunt has seriously gone downhill the food is terrible the quality and portion sizes are terrible i will never go there again.

what a lovely little chippy lovely staff and fantastic fish cooked beautifully and the skate we had was enormous couldnt eat it all but so much white succulent fish and we even had scraps we will definately go again and it has kept its traditional chippy look which is so nice to see in this day and age .Keep it up TATES! we will certainly spread the word.

Sat in restaurant and had cod and chips as they had sold out of our favourite fish Haddock. The cod and chips was lovely and the batter light. I was impressed as skin removed from the fish too. Definitely recommend Tate’s.

I recently visited this establishment on a Saturday lunchtime. Despite it being a Saturday (a market day in Boston) I managed to find at table promptly. I was attended upon straight away by a polite and incredibly efficient waitress. She took my order and within minutes my haddock and chips plus mushy peas appeared along with the miky coffee I'd requested. Despite not being on the coast where they usually taste good, I have to say it was in all probability the best fish and chips I've ever had. I would certainly go there again without any hesitation and willingly recommend this establishment to others. It's a 'no frills' establishment with a slighly old fashioned appearance but don't be put off by that. If my experience is anything to go by it's well worth a visit.

Me and my family have been at Tate’s yesterday night and we have really enjoyed it. We all had cod, chips and mushy peas and they were absolutely excellent and fresh. Staff were very polite and friendly. Love this place and will be return soon. Well done Tate’s team!!!!

Went to Boston no Boxing Day for football not expecting anywhere to be open. Found Tates open, what a breath of fresh air, quality fish and chips served by friendly staff with a welcoming smile. Absolute certainty we will return on our next visit.

You will not find better fish and chips in the area of a friendlier team of people to serve them up. Sam is always very accommodating and cooks the fish exactly to your liking, always with a smile and a bit of banter! Good luck Sam can't fault you mate.

It is the second time I have eaten at Tates , I do not eat out all that often as on a tight budget , but this place seves the best fish and chips , and not expensive , I live outside of Boston and only visit a couple of times a year but shall make Tates my guilty pleasure

No pretentions, If the owner reads this, please don't change a thing, fish and chip shops like yours are thin on the ground. I'll be back, even though I live in Dorset. We stopped at Tates for bite to eat while visiting Boston Stump.

I have been coming here for many years but not regularly as I live 20 miles away and rarely get into the middle of Boston. Every time I come in he staff always remember exactly what I have. Even though it’s been well over a year since my last visit. In between Visits I’ve had a baby, and was told not to have my codbites open to go and have a rest upstairs and chill out. Sam is a gent always smiling, and kind and goes the extra mile. No finer fish and chip shop anywhere!! And considering my grandfather had a fish and chip shop that’s saying something.

I have eaten at rates for years I now live in Melton and still come over to see my daughter and eat in there but on t Thursday the 25 of October 2018 we went in there has we have done in the past and order fish chips curry and food for my grandson my daughter food and little man's was fine I got mine and the fish was cured and full of scraps which I did not mine but after removing the scraps the batter was Not cooked so I told the waitress and she charged it which was nice started to eat it again and the she spayed the table next to us with pledge polish So then all I could taste was the p ollish so did not eat it .went to pay told her that is the first time I have completed in tates and on top of that was made to pay full price for some thing I did not eat I my eyes it was down to them on the way out I said to my daughter we will have to find an onther fish and chip shopwhich is a same . Did not like the idea of the milk coming ing little jars when you poor it it going every where.

Great chip shop which is back on track now it has new serving staff. Very clean, staff friendly and good value for money.

The food was tasty and we didn’t need to wait long. The staff were friendly and a gluten free option was available for myself. We are upstairs in the restaurant which was busy but relaxed. The restaurant was child friendly. The portions were of a good size.

Great fish and chip shop always busy and always quick service. Sam is the best so friendly and always bubbly works so fast and fish is always amazing! Like to support local businesses. visited tates yesterday and it was only yet another amazing meal! gets better every time i go, the staff are absolutely lovely and sam is a gem, always making sure you’re looked after, the chips are the best about, won’t find anywhere better!! the menu is only getting bigger with a huge range of choices for everybody. get down to tates, you won’t regret it.

Beautifully cooked fish ... crisp batter and piping hot fish - no soggy batter - chips were divine and scraps which I am partial too were excellent... well done not had in a year as previously had two disappointing visits but so pleased I called in today ... SPOT ON well done to all... friendly staff too

Having past many times , we finally stopped & decided to go in as a treat . To take out you go to counter, to eat in find a table & someone will come & take your order. I had fishcake, chips & peas , hubby had cod plus a drink each . It was lovely ! Not greasy xx

I had not eaten at Tate's for many years and, whilst shopping in Boston with the family, was attracted by the heady aroma of fish and chips. When the desire became too strong we headed into the restaurant to be greeted by their friendly and smiling staff. Having ordered fish, chips and mushy peas, plus fishcakes and chips plus two fish with mushy peas we sat back to wait. In good time the plates arrived, completely full of freshly cooked fish and chips and they tasted.......fantastic. Just as I remembered when I was a kid. No greasy taste afterwards either.

Been here a few times, but this is my first review. As you would expect, this restaurant and takeaway specialise in fish and chips, but the menu has something for everyone. There are plenty of tables both upstairs and down. Fish I had was excellent and the service was great. Prices are fair and the surroundings are nice. I got a nice welcome, too.

Popped into Tates for a quick lunch as we were shopping. Had the mini fish and chips which came with peas and a mug of tea. (£6) Absolutely delicious. Excellent, quick service and clean surroundings. It’s a real gem.

Our day in Boston was perfectly completed by an excellent meal at Tate's. This Fish & Chip shop/restaurant has been in Boston for so long that much of Boston was built around it! This is not a cheap meal. The prices are quite high but they are matched by the wonderful food and very good service. Nothing is too much trouble at Tate's.

Tried the fish and chips here and they were absolutely awful. I asked for a well done fish and they were about to put an already cooked fish that was in the cabinet back into the pan, so I asked for a fresh one to be cooked. Well, when the food arrived, the fish looked like it had been twice cooked and it was served with the worst chips I've ever had. They were hard and dry, basically inedible. There was also distinct taste of burnt oil on the food. Much improvement needed as far as food is concerned. If you are paying to eat in, don't expect cutlery!

I used to love this place for fish and chips, but test time I visited the guy who seemed to be the manager treated his staff with such an appling contempt I will never go back. The fish and chips were excellent and the service from the staff again was excellent. The manager needed to learn how to treat his staff with a little more respect

First time here for a takeaway and I was very impressed with the place.

I came into this chip shop and there was a short young chap frying had grey or blonde sfreaks anyhow these fish and chips was gorgeous so a week later I went back in and it was another oldish fellow with a hat on. I ordered the same fish and chips but these was ever so greasy and i swear the chips was not done properly and was not nice at all. I will be back but I hope it's the younger fellow in again next time.

More than fish and chips, quite a menu an area to sit outside as well as the inside seating and right in the town centre. Great customer service you will not be disappointed.

You can always spot good food when the place is busy, when we arrived we had a 5 min wait for a table, but it was well worth it, the Fish cooked in lovely crispy batter, the Chips done to a turn and super mushy peas, certainly recommended even if you have a short wait.
