Tartar Frigate Restaurant in Thanet

Booked for an evening during a weekend in Broadstairs. Restaurant upstairs is cosy and friendly, and the service and food were excellent. They’d run out of chips, which is definitely a first for me but the sautéed potatoes are an excellent substitute!

This is my second visit to the upstairs restaurant, last time a simple error meant we were left with our sauté potatoes and veg before the correct mains came out. Having, emailed to complain the way the manager dealt with it was brilliant, very considerate. Anyway, both times, the staff were very friendly and helpful and the food is superb. The cod is really high quality and fresh and the sauté potatoes are something else. We thoroughly enjoyed our time here, just wished I could’ve fitted in a dessert too 😁. I highly recommend this place, I don’t think you’ll find a better meal in Broadstairs, not just the food which is first class but also the atmosphere and lovely staff. I just plucked TTF from Trip Advisor purely by chance. We were down on the (absolutely freezing!) coast for a couple of days, and we were not at all disappointed. On Friday, I had cod, and on Sunday, well, it just had to be the Sunday roast. As I said, it was bitterly cold over the weekend, but one was instantly thawed out by the warm, welcoming atmosphere. Well done on all fronts - next time I'm down, I'll be back, no problem!!!!

My partner and I visit Broadstairs once or twice a year. Our first job when choosing our dates is to book a table at TF. Whether a fish fan or a land lover, you will never be disappointed, as the food is nothing short of sensational. Upstairs from the pub, the layout is old English and perfect. Add to this the fantastic staff, like us, I'm sure you will be returning time after time. Bravo Tartar Frigate, see you again soon!!

Had a fabulous evening at this lovely pub right overlooking the bay in Broadstairs. We arrived early for a drink before our daughter and son-in-law were due. A lovely warm welcome from Vicki at the bar. I had a lovely Merlot - not freezing cold either just the right temperature! Vicki gave husband tasters of the Gadds and Ghost Ship but he stuck with his usual Doombar. Very cosy and clean and lots of nice nooks to sit in with lovely cushioned benches. Went upstairs to the restaurant and had a lovely table overlooking the sea. Daughter and husband shared bread/olive oil for a starter which was yummy! The specials board was very tempting - the bass with ginger, pak Choi looked tasty but Aidan the lovely (and knowledgeable) waiter said they only had four Dover sole left and we all decided we’d go for those and were so glad we did - absolutely gorgeous, very generously sized, nice and thick and cooked to perfection. We had a nice dish of sauté potatoes and another dish of carrots, courgettes, broccoli and green beans between us all. (Sorry no pics of the food we all tucked in too quickly!). Really nice wine too! Husband and daughter couldn’t resist the gypsy tart and I had a delicious lemon posset. Sorry I didn’t get our other waitress’s name - the service we had from her and Aidan was exemplary - friendly, there if we needed anything but not intrusive - just perfect. Really enjoyed our evening here - it was quiet but I’ve been there in Folk Week when it’s packed as it’s very popular and after eating there I can see why! Looking forward to another visit. A group of us were here for a pre Christmas lunch. There was a good atmosphere and the staff were friendly and helpful. The food was excellent with a great selection which we pre ordered. A very enjoyable experience

Lunchtime meal for two in the upstairs restaurant. Our first meal here . Perfectly cooked fish and tasty vegetables. Excellent desserts. Attentive, but not obtrusive,staff. Clean toilets. Lovely view of the bay. Very impressed. We will be back!

We were greeted warmly by Limoni and shown to a nicely intimate table. The ambience was perfect in this very historical restaurant. We shared lovely home baked bread with olive oil and began with tempura battered vegetables for me which tasted so fresh and crispy inside, esp liked the fennel. My husband had the white bait which he loved. We both chose the fish special of whole sea bream which again tasted supremely fresh and came away beautifully from the bone. Had we checked how large they were we could easily have shared one! The menu did say one could ask for a smaller portion, we will do so next time. We could not manage a dessert what with the dish of fresh vegetables and crispy sautéed potatoes. We now will count the Tartar Frigate as a benchmark restaurant for judging other restaurants we visit. And thank you to a fine young chef and a very hospitable and attentive Limoni.

Our reservation was made 4 weeks prior, on arrival we were informed they had no reservation in our name. However, a table was found, having been seated we were then told they only had a limited menu as they had run out of fish, steak and ale pie, fish pie and oysters. The bar had an imitation fire which sums the place up. Avoid at all costs.

We visited last night for a special family birthday. The food was amazing and the service outstanding. Lemini and her wonderful team made sure mum had the best birthday. Thank you Lemini xx

Had a great lunch with a group of acquaintances. Have not been here for a while, but really friendly welcome by Lemoney and her team. The food was delicious, hot and great to have vegetables served separately. On a very wet and windy Saturday it was lovely to be inside with the view of the rough sea. Definitely be back. Thank you.

Great pub, good food and beer served by nice staff. Go on a Thursday for folk jam night great atmosphere. Has a pool table if that's your thing.

Absolutely lovely experience. Lemony made us all so welcome. Beautiful view ove the harbour and excellent food. The skate and the bass were fantastic - as was the whitebait. We spent a leisurely three hours over lunch.

Little gem nestled right on the harbour side, very unassuming cosy local pub offering a great range of ales and lagers. Friday night live music and a seafood restaurant upstairs serving delicious homemade dishes, mostly fresh seafood but some meat options too… but make sure you book! We were very lucky that the manager/landlady let us take an early table otherwise we would have missed out on a very fine meal and experience. Beautiful views out over the seafront, charming atmosphere and such friendly, professional staff too. Can’t wait to return to try it again .

We had been past this restaurant on numerous occasions but didn’t think it would be a good restaurant. Only booked because of Tripadvisor reviews and they proved very accurate. Very well prepared food and extremely welcoming staff. Highly recommend.

Such an unexpected find. The staff and the venue itself were amazing. The two ladies in the restaurant were lovely, and so helpful. Nice to have a little chat to them. Then the food was incredible. HUGE portions. We had to leave as we had a booking to get to elsewhere otherwise we could have stayed overlooking the sea and eating food there all day. Highly recommend.

This unexpected gem is located above the pub, with fabulous views of the harbour and a lovely ambiance. We received a very warm welcome and the friendly and efficient service continued throughout the evening. The food was excellent and very plentiful. We had an extremely enjoyable evening and will certainly return the next time we’re in Broadstairs.

Ww came here three days running the sea bass was the best I have ever had meal and I didbt like chill or parking I had garlic to suit me it was the best with veg and new potatoes I started with lemon posset naughty but extremely nice Starter I has Tiger prawns just with garlic On our last day I had two starters of tiger prawns with garlic with a salad healthy and light but simply the best Wete sad to go home but will come back next year but maybe before Your staff are exceptional from chef to waitress All beautiful people they cared we was happy and are meals were what we enjoyed Theses staff are a credit to you You shoukd be proud I was on holiday with my brother whom.has learning disabilities he loved it so much we're back next year thanknyou

Absolutely fantastic! Came here for lunch after reading excellent reviews on Tripadvisor. Was not disappointed. Ordered roasted monkfish and the roasted bass with pak Choi. Superbly cooked plates of food. Very flavoursome. The lady who served us (apologies, forgot name!) was wonderful and patient and made the whole dining experience here ever more pleasant. Thoroughly recommend this restaurant if you are coming to Broadstairs.

We came here to eat for my friend's 60th birthday & we were not disappointed. The food was very tasty & plentiful, the staff go the extra mile to look after you. We will definitely be back.

A really interesting restaurant above a very old pub in a perfect location. We had dinner where the service and food were all excellent. Dinner was just as you would want it: great menu, great quality and as much as you like. The staff were excellent. We would certainly go back.

We visited this exceptional restaurant on a Thursday evening. The view is excellent looking over Viking Bay Broadstairs main Bay. The food was absolutely superb.My son had Oysters , I had scallops we both choose Crab for mains.Sharing a lemon posset for dessert. The service also deserves comment.Nothing was to much trouble for the lady's serving. The whole evening was quite exceptional.

We visit here on a regular basis as the food,service, and value for money is always way above average. The staff and manager are always so polite and happy to see everyone. The standard of the food is always spot on and cooked to perfection with a good choice and specials board. Highly recommended. Great location with amazing views of the beech

We were visiting Broadstairs for the weekend and decided to try the Tartar Frigate restaurant after reading other reviews. They didn't disappoint. Staff were so attentive and friendly and went above and beyond to look after us. Food was delicious and worth every penny. Gorgeous place!

My Wife & I visited yesterday (Sunday) for Lunch & we were extremely impressed with the whole Meal! Set Menu at £35 for four courses was very good value as all courses were very tasty, hot & well presented! Service was also excellent! Couldn't fault anything! Would definitely recommend & also return again soon!

We’re afternoon drinking people. However! We popped in for a pint on a Friday evening and ended up staying for the whole night - there was live music from a group of 3 guitarists who were absolutely fabulous and got everyone joining in, but not so loud that you couldn’t still have a chat. Went back on a Saturday afternoon and ended up talking to a lovely local couple. Just really easy going, friendly, comfortable, cozy and doesn’t feel like one of those ‘big chain’ pubs!

Food and service was brilliant. Feels cosy and the upstairs restaurant area gives great views of Viking bay - even in the evening. Ladies working on restaurant floor were lovely and so attentive.

Had a great evening last Friday at the restaurant in Tartar Frigate. Firstly let me say that the staff are absolutely first class. Very attentive and helpful for me having food intolerances , went above and beyond to help me have a meal that I could manage. I would not hesitate in recommending this establishment. The food is just wonderful. Just superb. WIll be back next time in the area

The entire visit was a delight; the care taken by every member of staff to attend to every need and their faultless politeness was charming. The food was copious and extremely tasty and the drinks excellent. We were seated at a very comfortable spacious table near the window and left to take as long as we wished. The cost of the meal was much more realistic than we have encountered in many other places.

Some of the best seafood we have had locally (the skate wing in particular) with excellent and engaging service and a great view of Viking Bay from our table.

On a busy Valentines Evening, both the meal and service were nothing short of exceptional. Having travelled from Essex, we are already planning our next trip. Bravo!!

First visit on Valentine's day, beautifully decorated, made to feel very welcome by our host. Plenty of room to manoeuvre passed tables. Food absolutely amazing, we had soup for starters, I had fish pie, partner had steak, cooked to perfection, a special dessert made by the chef for Valentine's day. Lovely ambience. The 2 young waitresses were fairly new but did an amazing job, we tipped them generously, listening around every diner had a lovely evening and worth every penny.

The food, location and staff were incredible. A very high standard of quality at a very reasonable cost. Outstanding!

We visited the upstairs restaurant for Sunday lunch. Friendly staff and great service. The food was fantastic and good size portions. Husband doesn’t like soup normally but had two bowls. The prawn cocktail was the best he has had. Thank you for a great lunch.

A warm welcome from two lovely ladies behind the bar. We came for a drink and decided to stay and have a snack! We chose a bowl of chips and a plate of whitebait. The chips were chunky and delicious but the whitebait was just divine!! Big, beautiful fish in a light batter. A great portion for the £10. The best we’ve ever tasted and it’s our go to snack if on the menu in pubs. Wonderful ambience. View of the sea. Lovely clientele and delicious food, beer and Prosecco. What more could you want for a birthday lunch out!!

I was surprised downstairs pub was very quiet, but then paid £8 something for half a lager shandy and a pint of beer I could see why. Restaurant upstairs was nice and warm and the service couldn't have been better. Quality food with decent portions.

Lovely restaurant, very attentive staff. Lovely fresh seafood and fish with very good portions. Ambiance was nice and relaxed and just an altogether lovely evening. Added bonus if you want to see some live music after your meal in the pub area below.

Have been wanting to try the Tartre Friget for dinner for a long time. Last night we did. Sadly, shortly after we arrived the grill stopped working. These things happen and they were very apologetic. The grill was up and working around 20 minutes later. We ordered, the bread was lovely while we waited and the service was great. Prawn cocktail was good and oysters seemed okay. We also had a grilled prawn starter alongside the mains (whole sea bass). The prawns were very tough and the sea bass wasn’t great. The lemon posset and cheeseboard after dinner were amazing. Sadly, the next morning I woke with awful stomach pain and still suffering. I can only imagine it was the oysters or prawns. 😔 …and paid £200, for two of us, for the privilege. Won’t be returning.

Only disappointing bit was the strict charge whether you eat all of the courses or not. For those of us who eat smaller meals the cost was £35 made the experience expensive for 3 of our party of 5.

A wonderful restaurant with a wonderful view. I would thoroughly recommend one of my favourites starters, a goats cheese, beetroot and walnut, its a match made in heaven, it was delicious! For mains I had a steak which was cooked exactly how I requested it. The waitress was very friendly and knowledgeable about the area, we will definitely be back!

This pub has such a lovely cosy atmosphere, right by the beach ! Made us feel we were in our local pub! Really enjoyed the live folk music and the beers !

Wonderful, friendly service. Terrific atmosphere and surroundings. Menu is obviously slanted to the fish side, but still plenty of choice. Food quantity cannot be faulted and portions, if anything tend to the large side. A first class experience and will certainly be back. Five Stars for sure.

I normally visit when I come down, but I bought family this time, & everyone & everything was as normal & feedback was excellent. Even my request for some assistance on seating, as one of our number had dementia & we had worked out a way to include her on our break without causing issues for other dinners, guests. Attend last night for dinner after finding the pub on trip advisor. We wasn’t disappointed the staff was so welcoming friendly and very attentive throughout our visit. The food was lovely and fresh 2 special starters, 2 gorgeous fish pies and recommended Kentish gypsy tart...

Very nice meal in traditional surroundings. Friendly and efficient service. The only niggles were a salmon dish that said it was cooked with garlic, ginger and chilli. We were surprised that the garlic was whole cloves and the ginger was in big chunks. We had expected it to be minced. Also we thought £13.50 for a scallop starter that contained two scallops was a bit pricey. On a positive note the skate wings were enormous and beautifully cooked.

We love dining at The Tartar Frigate. Delicious food, great ambience and excellent, friendly service - with a sea view thrown in . Whenever we visit Broadstairs, we aim to eat there. This visit we managed the amazing huge Sunday lunch and a very special Tuesday lunch. We would thoroughly recommend.
