A public house clearly for locals. The group of lads who had finished work were noisy and boisterous. Friendly enough but not welcoming

We enjoyed an excellent Sunday lunch, options offer single, duo or trio of meats. Trio included beef, chicken & gammon. All cooked to perfection, portions were generous. Hosts were very friendly, superb service throughout. Will definitely be returning, a little gem of a local pub

Had one of the best roasts , with cauliflower cheese and lots of gravy .

This is our new local after moving house and have been here a couple of times in the day with our kids. The beef roast dinner is amazing! We aren't usually a fan of beef but this was delicious. Although there's no play area for the kids there's a nice decking area to enjoy drinks in the sunshine. Very friendly staff.

I thoroughly enjoyed the food, the company was questionable but I enjoyed the burger.

Nice pub, clean and well looked after. Two pool tables and a darts board were very welcome. Decent selection of beers. Staff were very friendly and the toilets were clean.

With a couple of days notice they laid on 3 plates of sandwiches and a couple of bowls of chips for about a dozen of us at lunchtime on a Friday. Chips were lovely, sandwiches good too. Nice pub with 2 pool tables.

On a positive the service was friendly and welcoming but on a down side the food was awful. So Went here for the 1st time 7 of us as a family. Was rather disappointed. The food took ages to arrive and a couple who came in after us were served before us. Then the food arrived burnt the burger bum was solid and cold chips. Its safe to say we won't be retuning.

Very friendly bar keep, and the atmosphere was lively. We are going to return for food in the New Year. So hoping it is good as we can walk the pup there as they are dog friendly 😍

Christmas Eve , thought we would come to a local pub , only chips for food , very very rude member of staff serving at the bar , off to another pub that are glad to have us as a customer spending money

We recently made an excellent decision to have a party held here. Wow! The buffet food supplied at the event was amazing, having worked previously in the hospitality sector I don't believe I have seen better. Well done guys. The staff are always so friendly, you'll never wait long to be served at the bar and they make you feel like family. The pub can transfer readily from local pub to event venue and the whole team works so well to accommodate your every need. Can't wait for another excuse to hold a party here again.

If you like a locals pub where the locals are used to being too loud and are allowed to vape inside then this would be a good place.... However if you are a normal person wanting a nice pub lunch I'd not be quick to recommend. The food isn't bad and there are rather a few options so that side of it is the thing that makes this place ok, however whichever end of the pub you sit you will have to deal with illegal vaping inside.

Went there on the 23rd September 2023, for an evening with my partner, going to listen, to a band, there must of been a party, as there were a few children, but , after 9pm there were two little children, one a baby, and one about 2 ish, and she was running around with a j20, bottle of orange, as it was glass, I was getting very anxious, I could stay any longer, not that im agaist children, as im not, but I was"nt on holiday,or on a holiday site, I went to a local pub, to have a drink, and listen to the band,

Went here for my grandsons 18th birthday. What can I say but amazing. The food was fantastic 😋 the staff are very friendly and very family oriented. I would highly recommend for any occasion. If I could give more stars I would 😊

Me and my husband went to tap and barrel for a roast dinner food was delicious lovely amount of food service was excellent and the atmosphere was very delightful we were shown to our table then someone came round and ask if would like any drinks placed our drink order afew minutes after asked if ready to order food

Came here as part of a large group. The food was lovely and we could not fault the service. Very well organised and really friendly.

Just went to this place for a roast dinner if you like …FROZEN roast than this is the place for you but at £12.95 I ant happy with a frozen roast very dry and the staff when approached about it being frozen well I thought they where going to KILL me ha ha stay away folks it’s not what the pictures show 😂😂😂

Large venue which was used by a relative who got married for the evening event. Nice selection of drinks and reasonably priced.

Very smiley staff, make easy conversion with genuine interest.. nothing is too much trouble for them to fix or fetch. A most pleasant visiting experience.. we're going back for food very soon

Had my nans wake at The Penguin Lounge this afternoon... From start to finish the staff were attentive, friendly, understanding and did everything we asked... An extremely good buffet with wonderful food... Thank you to all, from The West Family...

If you live in St Judes or surrounding areas where there is no pubs due to a stupid law set years ago, then the Penguin is your local pub!! The staff are all friendly the food is great and it has a great tradition local pub feel whilst keeping up to date with more modern pub practices. I would highly recommend a visit if you want to go out for food or grab a quick pint or three 🤣. Keep up the good work👏👏

Great Buffet for Christmas works do

When called to ask if they could cater for gluten intolerance they said yes and that something from the standard menu could be ordered, then when arriving was told the same again but once it came to order we were told quite unconvincingly that maybe some of the veg is gluten free and the chicken is cooked separately. Frankly couldn't put our trust in ordering at a location where the staff couldn't confidently answer a question on allergens and would guess the answer. Sat with nothing but an orange juice as my friends ate their meals.

We had a wake there on Thursday3rd November 2022 and the food was tasty and beatiful presented thankyou to all the staff

The food was amazing we were a large booking and the service was great nothing was to much trouble I have a dairy intolerance and this wasn't a problem for them 😀 The size of the portions were good and plenty for everyone would definitely recommend this place to everyone great food and great service 👍

For beer it's great. The food is below par. Pizza tasted like £1 frozen pizza from Asda and the burgers are not great. Found the owner to be very rude too. Compared to the Tamar in Crownhill for example it's night and day. Hopefully they sort this.

Have just been here with my daughter, and what a lovely place to visit, the people have now been running the penguin for 2 years, so pop in and say hello and have a pint of Korev, and a corrnation chicken salad roll, either with chips and or ready salted crisps, really nice setting with a great family friendly feel.

We had a wake here Friday, everything was perfect. They let us decorate exactly as wanted, they did a huge buffet and food was incredible. All the staff were amazing and the new owners are so fantastic. Covid-19 safe and I can't recommend enough, so happy and welcoming, 150% recommend to everyone!!! They did lots of little extras and always went above and beyond no matter what! This is my local too and I always feel comfortable coming in alone for a quick pint, everyone is always fantastic. They alow children and dogs so it's always the perfect place to pop in.

We went for a meal Friday, the food was not what we expected, the steak and ale pie had peas inside it, we asked for no vegetables, not knowing they were inside the pie, my meal was put on the hot plate, I watched the cook pick my steak up from the plate and carry it off in his hand, I didn't complain at the time because the bar person was lovely and it was embarrassing.

Food was lovely highly recommend the lamb shank. Can't speak highly enough about the friendly helpful staff

Very disappointed and very over priced! Roast looked nothing like it did in the pictures, In fact I had hair in my turnip! Nothing offered as an apology! Charged £9 for a kids meal!!! Drink not included. Beef was very dry in fact the whole meal was disgusting. When we paid for our meal and the lady asked how was it, other than hair in the food…… i replied! Awful. No apology she just said she would let the kitchen know! Will not be returning!

Popped in last night for a drink with my Husband, and unfortunately it was very cold and made us feel uncomfortable, the pub doesn't seem to have the same happy atmosphere as previously experienced, such a shame.

Generally the Penguin is a lovely, friendly pub with a great atmosphere and I go there regularly for that reason. I decided to host my works Christmas party here this year and it was absolutely fantastic! We were given the entire restaurant area for our party and the staff went above and beyond with amazing decoration and delicious food! They spent hours getting everything ready and with all the little special touches it looked so fancy, especially when they came around with canapés and welcome drinks. Everyone at work was super impressed and my boss said it was the best party we've had! I honestly can't recommend this place enough... If you want a party with a great space, friendly, professional staff and amazing food, this is the place you need. Thank you Dan, Beth, Chris, Danielle, Amy and everyone else in the team!

Disappointed this is my local. Basing this review and opinion on a roast meal for three costing £43.00. I genuinely tried to see the positive in the meal, which would have been the friendly enough staff. Our meals were cold, odly presented, and generally poor. The veg was mushy and watery; the potatoes were fatty and reheated. Advertised chicken breast but received what appeared to be a boiled leg. The gravy was also lacking. I put this down to the time of day perhaps 1700, and possibly caught the ends of the food served before an evening menu. Despite being on our door step, I wouldn't return until they have mix up with the chef, or menu. PANTS

Went down to the penguin today 7/11/21 for a roast because I heard it was nice food down there so thought I’d give it a try. Wasn’t until I ordered and they didn’t have no meat left at apart from pork. And when the food came out there was only 6 potatoes between 3 people and the food wasn’t hot so won’t be going there again!!!

This pub has had a refurbishment since the days of The Tap and Barrel. It is fresh and clean but still cosy, with friendly and helpful staff. The Sunday roast that my party of 7 had was excellent, and the selection of beers and ciders is good.

Not sure it this is a pub or kindergarten. Went for a few drinks over the weekend and lots of kids in both areas of the pub even though it was late. I love kids but not when I want a few drinks to relax. 🤔

Recently moved to the area and am very pleased this is my local. Friendly staff, landlady and landlord. Good prices. Great garden for nice weather. Good food. Everything you want from a decent pub.

Dan was amazing, ran us through everything on the day we went to book. On the actual day, everything ran smoothly, the buffet was excellent, and plentiful. Good value for money. Would recommend to anyone looking to book any event. From our experience, you will not be disappointed. Thank you again!

A nice cold cider in a lovely pub.

My family and I love coming here for Sunday roast, we have booked for a birthday meal. We came to mums meet up on a Thursday and very welcoming by Dan and Beth x our new favourite place.

Ok so it's are 2nd visit to the penguin our first Experience wasn't the best, we could of put it down to covid and the stress that we are all feeling at that moment.. Dan kindly invited us back to have a meal and they really turned it around for us!!! Lovely food especially the Squared.. staff are very friendly and helpful... we will definitely come back.. Thank you Dan for inviting us back!!!

Went here for my mother's wake, the staff were extremely professional and friendly..the buffet was excellent. We're definitely going to visit it under better circumstances, couldn't fault it in the slightest. There's also a dog friendly outside beer garden, thank you to the proprietors for helping to make a sad day tolerable x

A lovely Friday evening was spent here, staff very friendly and atmosphere nice. Quite quiet for 6pm certainly was not full. Choose where to sit as there was plenty of choice. Looks like there is a limited menu in place not a great deal of choice but overall for the price and quality we were all very satisfied with the meal. Drinks are on the steeper side but this is a family run business and not a chain. If your looking for a chilled evening out with good quality pub food then this is certainly worth a visit.

The Penguin has excellent service, food is of a high standard with that little bit extra on top to go the extra mile. I have recently arranged two events with the penguin and they've come up trumps on both very different occasions. They provided a competitive rate for a wake and provided space for a family reunion on new year's eve. I cannot fault their standard of care and dedication to customer needs.
