Bare laminate tables.cheap cutlery laid out 2 knives 2 forks. "Restaurant" just bar extension with waitress. Several items unavailable. I had soup, lukewarm. No-one about to complain. When waitress turned up my wife had eaten hers so sent soup back. Lamb and steak meals good (and hot).cheese course good. Advertised baked cheesecake not baked and meagre berries. Each utensil brought out after food. I fetched a spoon myself. Wines overpriced as was food. Why did we go? A gift voucher from the children. Will not go again or recommend Not hotels fault but advertised road works completely cut off main exit so trip round the back roads to get home. God help those arriving or leaving without satnav. Nice of hotel could have signed this at main door.

We booked for Christmas Day Carvery Lunch for 7 family members. Our whole Christmas meal was terrible. The Starters were very poor. Prawn cocktail was 8 shrimps on a small plate with 5 leaves of Rocket with lemon juice no dressing and two small slices of bread and butter. The main meal was a carvery and everything including the gravy was cold. We could not eat the main course and decided to go home so upsetting. I have tried to contact the Manager 8 times and no response so far. How can you charge £89 a head and serve cold food especially on Christmas Day. Very disappointed.

Really poor experience in cafe area. We wanted lunch- sandwiches on either white or wholemeal bloomer bread. We got sandwiches on cheap sliced white bread. When we queried it, we were told that we were mistaken and it was bloomer bread, then told anyway their bloomer bread was sliced bread anyway. We reiterated that it wasn’t as described in the menu, staff checked with the chef and then confirmed we were right. No bloomer bread available today! Charged full price. This is the second Mecure 4* hotel where I’ve had a really poor experience.

A 1st time visit. Staff pleasant. Menu decent. Order placed at the bar. Unfortunately the meals ordered came in dribs and drabs. My wife told me to start eating mine and I was half way through by the time her meal arrived. Pretty poor. The food itself was ok but nothing to write home about. More chicken needed in the curry otherwise portion size was good. Only seemed to be one waitress however the place only a had a few tables with diners. Attention to detail please.

Am really surprised by the reviews as our experience was absolutely the opposite! We had been in Wentworth but it was half term and so we decided we'd travel to Tankersley for lunch. One of my worst restaurant experiences this evening, I cannot think of anything positive to say about it other than the helpful reception who refunded my money. Service is non existent and unprofessional, the soup arrived without a spoon! I had to go and find someone to ask for a spoon. The Hovis style rolls that were served with soup were rock hard (and I do mean rock/brick hard), they should have never have been let out of the kitchen! The hamburger when it eventually arrived was so overcooked as to be too hard to cut and was sent back to be replaced. After 30 minutes the replacement had still not arrived and I went to find someone to cancel the order. This hotel needs to seriously consider its food offering, because this was diabolical.

What can I say? Ambience was quite pleasant, service painfully slow. Starters, Nachos were OK, chicken wings seriously over cooked but were just about palatable. Main course. Attempt 1. Penne Arabiata was absolutely stone cold, I kid you not. Literally tasted like it has just come out of the fridge. Attempt 2. Penne Arabiata was luke warm with very little ta ate, virtually no sauce and what microscopic amount of sauce there was hadn't been within 100 miles of an Arabiata it was so tasteless. No parmesan cheese offered. As for me, my hamburger was over cooked, dry and far too well done (I want offered a choice of how I wanted it cooked). Honestly we lost the will to live and decided against a dessert as we were reluctant to put another penny into the coffers of this restaurant. I am writing a septate review of the hotel, but in a nutshell, there are many many different hotel groups with restaurants attached to the hotel and my review of the Copthorne in Newcastle where ee went on to illustrate how these things should be done.

You could have soled your shoes with the prawns in the prawn cocktails-probably just been defrosted given the length of time they took to arrive The sausage and mash for mains was equally disappointing. The menu said pork and herb sausage these were obviously chipolatas left from breakfast and the mash was foul The garlic bread served with the pasta had never seen garlic We complained politely when we paid at the bar and we’re given 20% off but still charged £50 I left feeling ripped off

Met a friend for lunch between Christmas and New Year and had lunch in The Brasserie. We were shown to our table and to be fair the fire looked very welcoming on such a cold wet day. I was very disappointed a number of the limited menu items were not available. We ended up ordering the ‘Home Made Pie of the Day’. On delivery you could tell immediately that this was not home made and probably supplied by a frozen food company, it was dry even with the addition of gravy. I don’t expect a hotel of this standard to be so dishonest in the menu description, and it is maybe something Trading Standards should investigate. The only positive side the service from the young male waiter was excellent

We ordered rhubarb & apple crumble for dessert , but could not eat it all. Absolutely stuffed. The next day, we were booked In for our Spa Treatments, so that included a light lunch (also in the bar & brasserie). We had soup-of-the-day & sandwiches. & then we had a light tea (because we were so stuffed from breakfast & lunch-time) off the bar menu. Fish Finger sandwich ( in a warm wholemeal baguette, salad & fries.) Again, very filling & tasty. For 2 G&T's it was about £12. (Which, tbh, was to be expected in this lovely hotel & it was a treat). Arrived for a 1.00pm lunch and got served at 2.30. That just about sums up this restaurant with so much potential and so little enthusiasm. No supervision (or so it seemed), poor food - (for instance Turkey Ballantine was three slices of dry turkey breast - as a chef I would be embarrassed to send out such a dish), incredibly slow service and priority given to cleaning other tables rather than taking orders. Not great for a family Christmas lunch. This is a 4* hotel but they’ve only spent £5 on the Christmas decorations! Such potential and such a letdown.

My Father took the whole family here for his christmas treat and it was , sadly , a disaster which resulted in my father being very angry. There were 14 of us booked in and as 9 people in our party had travelled from the south in bad traffic they were going to be a few minutes late. The staff were informed but said they couldn't delay the time due to being busy, which was understandable. However they didn't offer to bring us any menus beforehand in order to save time at the table. We had to ask for them eventually. When we went through to our table there weren't enough seats, then shown another table but the waitress kept saying but its for another 14 booked in later so went back to original table. asked for two highchairs and they were going to add another table on but no room, so we asked to go back to the other table . One of our party was disabled and had already had to walk a long way from the 'disabled' parking bay up a slope, up steps and all through the hotel to the restaurant, with his walking sticks. Then to have to be up and down changing tables was not good. The staff were just confusing and indecisive. We had one high chair but when we asked for the other one my niece had difficulty getting one.We ordered food and the order was read back to us. All good. My starter was cold when it arrived and I later saw staff carrying food from the other side of the hotel. The brasserie is an awful long way from the kitchen!!When the main meals came there had been quite a time passed from the starters but it wasn't a problem. One waitress was shouting 'pork chop' but no one had ordered a pork chop? one of us had ordered a Barnsley chop which should be lamb but she just kept saying 'who has ordered pork chop' very abruptly. Also the meat offered was a very poor example of a barnsley chop and was mostly inedible. Two meals hadn't arrived and we were all waiting to eat. eventually we got someones attention and they brought the two missing meals but the others had had to start eating by this time and were halfway through their meals. The plates were cleared after a long time and eventually we ordered the sweets. One waitress was quite abrupt when we were asking which cheesecake she had brought . she had 2 plates with different items on and just kept saying cheesecake! She didn't realise one was pecan pie.Now these might seem like small errors but added together it was very annoying. Yes it was busy but if you have a full booking list then get more staff in!! If you can't cope with a full restaurant then reduce the numbers to a level you can cope with. Being busy is NOT an excuse for poor service. The staff were not trained well enough on their knowledge of the menu. Most of them had no knowledge of the food or what they were serving to the diners. Again , there is no excuse for this.Simple improvements will make all the difference.

We called in for a pub lunch - my daughter has allergies so we asked for a ham and cheese sandwich with no salad dressing or coleslaw, together with a tuna sandwich as it comes. The food was delivered - the ham and cheese sandwich with all the salad dressing and coleslaw on it. This was returned to the kitchen - duly arrived back with the plates swapped over - no new sandwich made as there was still signs of the dressing on the sandwich. The bread was not buttered on the ham and cheese and the tuna filling did not even cover all the bread - just like you buy a shop produced sandwich. We complained due to serving food that could make my daughter ill - the message came back that the chef had made a new sandwich and must have caught it on the coleslaw by mistake!!!! The only mistake was choosing there to eat - from sticky tables in the bar, cobwebs on the light shades and very very expansive sandwiches that I would have been ashamed to serve to my family. Poor show - will we return definately not - thanks for the offer of a free dessert - which we refused due to the quality of the food already given to us.

Christmas Day lunch today, £85 per head. Starters were ok, nothing special, the scallops and turbot terrine smelled a bit too fishy for my liking but it was ok. Champagne sorbet mid course was nice but totally unnecessary for this class of restaurant. The main course was dreadful. Generous portion of turkey, albeit stringy, but what was clearly packet stuffing mixed with water and shaped into rounds but not even baked off. Inedible. The parsnips appeared to be boiled, they certainly had not been roasted. But worst of all, the roast potatoes which should be one of the absolute stars of a Christmas dinner were tiny, and shaped like pebbles. It honestly looked like they’d opened a catering tin of new potatoes and dropped them in the deep fryer. Absolutely awful.

We come here quite often if we need to use the charging facilities for a trip and never before had such terrible service as today. I've always found the staff great but we were treated to diabolical service by one sour faced young lady. I can only assume she is newly promoted or even new to Tankersley Manor but we certainly won't be returning to the bar anytime soon. Whilst we did keep our cool I am positive I saw another customer angrily make her opinion of the same person very clear. Not that it made any difference to the attitude or service - she even ignored a request to help her friendly and professional colleague. Not acceptable.

Bar menu not extensive but something for everyone. We decided to have the Caesar Salad small portion added Chicken and shared portion chunky chips. It was lovely and just enough. There were some wedding guests in bar and was busy they didn’t really have enough staff on to serve which was a little annoying as they would have known this in advance. However we still enjoyed and would not hesitate to return.

Visited this hotel on a works do , it was absolutely shocking , it was a set menu of hunters chicken and treacle sponge and custard , the chicken breast was so dry no one could get their knife through it we all struggled , and the dessert was like a school dinner, the price of alcohol was extortionate £17.50 for a double vodka redbull and a pint of Guinness , they really didn't sell their hotel to us and we won't be returning !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Service was terrible - no spoon for the soup, forgetting side dishes, etc. Food was not homemade - the duck spring rolls were mini party vegetable spring rolls you can get from a supermarket and the rest was average pub-grub fayre to be honest. Not what you expect from a 4* hotel restaurant!

We should have known better than to meet here for an important family celebration but it’s in a great location mid way between family living in Sheffield and Leeds. We have used it before and always been disappointed but this occasion was the worse yet. My starter which should have been whipped goats cheese in tomatoes was just a few tomatoes on a bed of rocket and when I complained they merely said that I had got half of it! My fish and vegetable were completely cold. My children’s risotto (one of their favourite meals) was utterly disappointing. My father asked for the gluten free apple pie (with sorbet instead of ice cream) and got a bowl of sorbet. The second attempt - the waiter delivered it saying it was mince pie and ice cream! Some meals were ok but the service was shocking - slow and uncaring. One of the waitresses did try her best and the Manageress did adjust our bill but they absolutely should have done this - without these people it would have only got one star. It was such a shame as it really spoilt our important celebration and it took hours for a 3 course meal. We will have to find a better meeting place for the future

I used to go here for their carvery, however I went this Sunday only to find they have stopped doing it and replaced it with a set Sunday lunch. at £19.95 I was expecting it to be decent but after looking at the menu and not seeing much I liked and the fact that the "roast of the day" was turkey - to my mind not a proper Sunday lunch meat.No wonder the place was empty, when I used to go it was always busy and you sometimes had to wait for a table. yesterday there was only about 10 people in the whole place. someone there obviously made the wrong decision! I decided to leave and try elsewhere and am so glad I did. the keys at Hoyland was lovely.

Avoid at all costsManager less service both in the kitchen and outsideThe waiters were fine as they did their job but the supply and quality of the food should not have left the kitchenOnly 16 in the party but many had finished one course before others had got servedIf they had waited the food would have been stone cold not just tepidPoor choice of menu ( no beef on Sunday). No clearance of old glasses, had to go to get own drinks and only asked after we had been to bar. The bill was not itemised and to an age to resolve. Child menu was had written and the charged for full meal. The managers need training the 'chef' needs to take responsibilityGo at your own peril

The Rooms were cleaned each day which was nice. Clean rooms, but little ventilation. Corridor constantly had room service trays on floor and were not cleared away which was a shame. A massive good point is breakfast, food and choice was awesome and Mohammed the waiter was the best employee we met all 4 days. The bar was dead but £5 for two bottles of water im not surprised. 1 fruit cider and 1 wine was £15. That was my main issue, just far to expensive to sit and drink. Sunday eve had no specials on but food was amazing that night, but had a Pepsi. Spa treatment and pool was good, friendly staff down there, more so than in the Brasserie. Over all it was nice, just nothing to rush back for sadly.

In a hotel of this standing you would expect staff to be trained and managed to a reasonable level. You would also expect the kitchen staff to be the same and for communication to exist between the two.I will start by saying the staff that attended to us were very pleasant and were trying very hard, however I sensed a frustration amongst them. This could be due to lack of training and lack of communication.A case in point was when we ordered a Vanilla Brulee...at least that what it was described as. The dessert that arrived was hot set custard with hot runny jam on top. We complained and returned it. The restaurant manager came over after a while and said it was described incorrectly it should be a vanilla soufflé with peach compote...Set custard will never turn into a souffle! To make matters worse we then listened to a conversation between waitresses as to what constitutes a Vanilla Brulee. We had to interrupt and explain what a Brulee and Souflee were. We should not have to do this, they should know this. This should have been part of their training as should laying a table, serving wine and checking everything was acceptable. We stayed at the hotel three nights, we do not know the area and thought the food would get better. Filleted fish was served with bones, batter was burnt, Chorizo in a reduced tomato sauce was served with lemon sole which had been so overcooked it was brittle.I give up! Where is the management, where is he training. The pub we had lunch in on the peaks provided much better food and much better service at quarter the cost.
