I had one of the best afternoon teas I have ever had here. The sandwiches were tasty (I was allowed to substitute the salmon sandwich for a cheese and tomato tart - which I did not regret), the scone was soft and still warm, and the dessert selection was top notch. This included a chocolate plant pot with chocolate mousse inside. It was delicious. The staff were really attentive and friendly. I would definitely go again. Please note that the only food they serve on Saturday is the afternoon tea.

Very nice food, would be nice if cash was accepted. I know it's easier to go cashless, but as supermarkets find out several times a year, one glitch and you have to close if you don't accept cash. Good amount of seating, and prices are reasonable compared to the average.

Called in here after a walking round Coventry looking at mediaeval buildings. Thought we would treat ourselves to the Drapers afternoon tea before visiting the guildhall. We were asked if we had booked but after replying that we hadn't the greeter checked with chef and said it would be ok. We were seated and order taken then our choice of teas brought out fairly quickly. After waiting 45 minutes and watching at least four tables who ordered after us be served we decided to leave. Staff never came to the table to ask if everything was ok during our wait & on saying we were leaving as we had obviously been forgotten staff were completely unconcerned.

Booked for my husband's 60th surprise birthday party. Absolutely lovely venue. The staff were so professional but friendly too, right from the start of the booking process to the night itself. The buffet was top notch especially the salmon. Lovely that bags were supplied so that guests could take a doggy bag home with them. Could not fault anything!

Our first visit here … small menu choice and three of the dishes not available. Although quiet it took over 45 mins for food and cheap chips. One big let down in such a beautiful place was that they brought the Guiness to the table in an unopened can with a Camden hells glass.. the staff should pour the drink and bring it over , it looks bad having a can on the table. Felt very disappointed!

Worst place & worst scones ever, on a par w Bisquick mix. You are paying for atmosphere. as the staff took their time to wait on us, acted put upon, finally served up the driest, nastiest scones (non fruit) that were so stale (not heated) that they fell apart on touch. All in all a big disappointment. We waited so long, we would have left & searched for another place but it was pouring rain outside. No, there were only 2 other patrons there, so why it took so long to serve up a dry, cold scone is beyond me. We were not there for high tea, but an early morning bite before sightseeing.

The food was nice, but we thought the portions were somewhat miserly. There weren't nearly enough sandwiches on the plate - just three crustless finger sandwiches per person. There was too much pickle in the ham sandwich. The selection of cakes was disappointing. The scone was delicious, but we had to ask for more cream (just one very small pot provided for three people). The strawberry jam was some sort of curd rather than proper jam, which was a pity. Good atmosphere though, and the staff were lovely.

Tales of Tea is in the Undercroft of St. Mary's Hall in Coventry City centre. The atmosphere in this restaurant is beautiful , steeped in hundreds of years of history. You walk into the courtyard from Bailey's Lane leading to St. Mary's Hall. You take a door to the right, go down some steps into a large historical room with a magnificent vaulted ceiling. A member of staff welcomes you, guides you to a table and, if you intend to have a meal as well as a drink, he or she gives you a menu. You gaze around the room. Your eye catches a glimpse of a painting of Earl Leofric of Mercia and then a painting of Lady Godgyfu, the Anglo Saxon name of Lady Godiva. Really, if you are in Coventry you must visit this restaurant where the food is beautiful and you have a wide selection of drinks, and you are surrounded by centuries of history.

We stopped in for Afternoon Tea during a short family trip to Coventry. We arrived 40 minutes early, and before heading down to the undercroft we took a spin through the Guildhall upstairs. The tapestries are beautiful and the docents/volunteers were quite informative. At the restaurant, the staff were also very friendly and prompt. The undercroft in which the restaurant is located is simply stunning and the seating set up in the space is quite comfortable with a generous supply of cushions. As other reviewers have mentioned, the Afternoon Tea service is had by reservation only. The food -- a traditional mix of scones with cream and jam, finger sandwiches, and cakes -- is pre-set with the reservation. You are offered a wide choice of beverages -- including a good selections of teas, coffees, or alcoholic beverages -- when you are seated. Our party tried multiple varieties of black and herbal teas, all of which were expertly prepared by the staff. The Red Berry & Rose Petals variety was a surprise favorite. The food was also excellent. On the savory bit, we thought the sausage roll, cucumber & cream cheese finger sandwich, and cheese tartlet were particularly tasty. On the sweet bits, the warm scones with jam were perfect and the chocolate flour pot was fun. It was a lovely, very delicious way to spend a rainy afternoon.

Not worth the price at all! Regarding our visit for the afternoon tea today, I wanted to bring to your attention a few things about our experience: 1. We had to wait about 15 mins at the door, no one came to take our appointment although we had the appointment at 3:30pm. No staff only two ladies. 2. We were just randomly placed and we asked if we could sit in one place at the corner, while shifting us they treated us with a lot of bad faces, almost uninterested and hated us for saying this. 3. Staff looked rushed, and took our food even before we finished, like almost trying to throw us away, felt racist as other white people who came before us were still eating. 4. When asked about a question regarding an ingredient in the menu the girl looked really unsure and almost was angry that I asked. 5. When wanted to ask for the toilet as I was paying at the counter, they asked me rudely to move aside from the till, although it was quite an empty afternoon. We waited outside in the rain Hoping she will come out to show us, but didn’t bother. Overall it was a really bad experience and one of a kind of all the afternoon teas I’ve ever had. Mainly due to the racist behaviour of the staff. I have done this job before as well, and we never could possibly treat our customers like this with this attitude. I’ll never go back here again, and also because I wanted to recommend my friends and colleagues about the place as I did for the Coombe Abbey one where I had an amazing experience, I’ll never be able to do this unfortunately.

Used to come to this place every week with my girlfriend for some food and tea. But after the new management took over around 2 months ago it hasn't been the same. We would come around 2pm (closing time online says 5pm and outside it says 3pm) and we would be told that they are not taking any more orders or on a different occasion that they are fully booked even though both their rooms were empty. Besides that there is no internet access here with no WiFi and half the time the food is overcooked. Tea is good

Well St Mary’s Hall is utterly stunning. The staff were polite efficient and friendly. But the afternoon tea was very average. Disappointing, as it could have been amazing. Too many mediocre cakes and not enough savouries. The cakes are pretty ordinary and a lovely bit of home made Victoria sponge cake or a freshly made scone would have turned a bland plate of cakes into a delicious experience. But it’s a wonderful place and we were very impressed. Shame about the afternoon tea though .

We arranged this for my sister in laws 60th birthday treat. The setting is stunning. The staff were lovely but the food was well short of the mark. We had the festive afternoon tea. 3 finger sandwiches and a scone which was dry and some mini cakes which were tasteless and mediocre in quality. It could be so much better with proper home cooking and tasty food. We were very disappointed as my sister in law had travelled a long way on a very cold day. There is no excuse for serving food that’s tasteless.

It is definitely a charming and quaint tea room, worth a visit. I ordered a cream tea. The pot of tea had two cheap tea bags inside, the ones you can buy in a supermarket. Disappointing really, I asked to have a pot of loose tea and they got me one straight away, which was good. However, how on earth such a renowned tea room even stocks cheap tea bags??

A huge thank you to Mae, the chef and the wonderful team at Tales of tea. We hired out the back room in the undercroft (fitted 22 people) for our intimate wedding breakfast of afternoon tea. The staff, venue and food exceeded our expectations. Mae (the manager) helped us set up and prep the room the day before with table arranging, decor, cake table etc and it looked amazing. She even organised us all to have reception drinks on arrival outside in the sunny courtyard before our afternoon teas were brought in for all our guests and drinks regularly topped up. Mae even came in on her day off to ensure this ran smoothly and was coordinated so perfectly down to the bill! The service was fast & friendly, food was amazing and catered for allergies and veggies we had at the party! We were a party of 15 and had yo pre order which is understandable but even though we had preordered, the wrong orders came out!! It took 2 waitresses and the manager with her phone to realise their mistake so they ended up just giving us a free burger because they were confused! The prosecco isn't the best and really expensive. The bar had no cocktails and had 1 non alcoholic beer! Maybe they should stock more?! I took a friend here for a special birthday present and it was a complete rip off! The surroundings were spectacular and worth a visit as there is so much history here and the staff were helpful. Afternoon Tea £24.95 three small sandwich fingers one cheese & pickle, one egg & one chicken & tarragon, these were nice but too much tarragon in the chicken one. Unfortunately one slice of bread had been the crust which had been shaved off. Scones were served warm with jam (not homemade) and clotted cream. They were quite nice but far too much baking powder in them. The cakes were tiny - a sliver of carrot cake & chocolate mousse type cake & a mincepie - nothing special for the price. Tea & 2 scones £12.95 this was a complete rip off. Compared to other places I’ve had afternoon tea this was disappointing and I wouldn’t recommend it. It was a shame as I’d hoped it would be an ideal place for a birthday present. However there was a table near us having lunch and that looked very nice and if I went back I’d try the lunch.

Also I would say it’s on the pricey side £24.50 for unlimited hot drinks (a pot tea) , 1.5 sandwiches, a scone and the equivalent of a dessert (4 mini’s). The building itself is lovely and quality of the food is excellent and its baby/child and wheelchair friendly in the main restaurant area.

I'd finished before hers arrived. my £14 pasta was the size of a stater. supposed to be in a creamy sauce but was oily, and congealed after a while like butter. portion sizes of all 3 meals were not proportionate. burger was tastless, and fish and chips, when it eventually arrived, was hard as if reheated and chips were small and hard. was given a misley 10% off the bill !! the venue is great, really nice, just need a chef and waiting staff that matches the standard of the surroundings. A very disappointing birthday lunch for my elderly mother.thanks !

Attended an afternoon tea for a second time after really enjoying the first one in June.we arranged to take family , upon booking we advised 3 vegetarians . Previously we had been advised the menu, so we assumed it was the same -as the vegetarian menu is not available -you cannot read it -only the normal afternoon tea menu is -I’ve since been told it is in fact ‘chefs choice’ and we were advised you have no option as they are pre prepared . We weren’t told the sandwiches at any point ( we had to guess) even when put on the table It seems strange that it wouldn’t be managed in the same way as the normal menu -I guess vegetarians don’t need a choice or visibility of what they are eating? . I’d taken my 70 year old mum , who really enjoyed the egg on the previous visit so I queried where the egg was and asked if I could have as an alternative . The waitress was lovely and said she would and brought 3 small fingers out. The head waitress then charged over ,We were made to feel greedy as if asking for additional sandwiches ! The head waitress interrupted the party and advised we would be charged ( this wasn’t an issue to pay , but I would expect her to discuss at the end ) it was very embarrassing ! I’ve since emailed in and the reply justified the behaviour, such a shame as it is a lovely place -but I won’t now return as it seems they have changed dramatically since the first visit in June . So if you are a vegetarian make sure you clearly check before your visit what is being offered initially especially if you have any dislikes or preferences .

Excellent fizz afternoon tea at St Mary's Guildhall this afternoon. Lovely food, great vegan and gluten free options, sweet or savoury afternoon tea. Friendly, pleasant staff, beautiful table settings, and a lovely interior. Thank you for a lovely afternoon. My only niggle was that the first pot of tea we had tasted lukewarm, but the second pot was perfect.

We were recommended this place by staff at the cathedral and I'm SO glad they did ! We were shown to a table by a lovely young gentleman and had our order taken a few minutes later by an equally lovely young lady. Our food was served to our table after a short wait and was of a superb standard. Excellent value for money ! After all that good food and great service, the staff team went the extra mile when I needed to pay cash instead of card. While they had no change, just about every member of the team searched their purses or wallets to find the correct change to give me and were 100% gracious about doing it ! All in all, one of the best places we've ever eaten at. To the chef: fantastic food, thank you so much ! To the staff team: You're ALL amazing lovely people offering the best service !

Beautiful setting, staff were friendly, polite and attentive, the food was well cooked very tasty and fairly priced. The loose tea, especially the berry and rose petal was to die for. On my list of places to visit again.

We really enjoyed our cream tea, the atmosphere and setting made it all perfect, however Mikada (hope I spelt your name correctly!) went over and beyond for service. Our first table was quite close to some other guests and we had our child with us, so we requested to sit at another table so we wouldn’t disrupt the guests. Mikada ensured this was carried out smoothly and efficiently. Service was prompt, we asked questions about the menu which were all helpfully answered by Mikada, she came back to the table several times to ensure that everything was ok. The cream tea was so delicious and the scones perfectly warm, the tea lovely and hot and plenty of choice of different loose leaf teas. It was all presented so beautifully that we can’t wait to come back and explore what else they have to offer. Thank you all!
