Taj Mahal in Argyll & Bute

I visited here 4 years ago and I had the best korma I have ever had but sadly I returned recently and had the worst I've ever tastied. It was watery, flavourless and such a waste of money. We were so disappointed, best avoiding this place!

We were staying in the area and found this restaurant right on the front harbourside. Great place very pleasant staff and the food tasted great! They are also dog friendly but we decided on takeaway as our dog had spent the day collecting sand in his fur so thought it best to not bring the beach to dinner with us! We would definitely return and eat here again.

5 x Munch Box and 2 x 16” pepperoni pizzas to feed a large party. To our absolute horror/disgust the pizzas might as well have been margarita, the chips in the munch boxes weren’t cooked, the onion rings weren’t cooked properly, the vegetable pakora was cremated, tandoori chicken was drier than the desert!!! Avoid at all costs…..literally aids in a box!!

Not good. Asked for butter chicken. Given korma. Cold not cooked good. There are few places to eat in Campbeltown but this one I wouldn't waste youre money.

Service friendly but not the best. Although the food was superb, the order wasn't quite correct, asked for Lamb Dopiaza, got Chicken instead.

Excellent service, friendly staff, superb food. Courses were perfectly timed, waiting staff attentive but not overbearing. Will definitely return - 10/10 recommend.

Had a takeaway on a Sunday night. The kids and my partner wanted the munchy box, that’s their all time choice and I went for a chilli chicken masala with a garlic naan. Generous portions, food excellent as always, waiters very polite as always. Now I’m in pain as I had to help them finish that munchy box. 🤣 just couldn’t resist….🤷‍♂️🙈 would happily recommend to everyone.

An absolute disgrace! We made reservations for the evening a few months ahead at 6.30. We were suddenly requested to come at 5. We told the owner that that was not possible, after some bizarre emails we did arrive a bit earlier than our original plan, around 6, looking forward to a nice evening amongst a group of friends, who also were eating there that night. But we got astonned as immediately we were told to leave within an hour!!! We told that that was unacceptable, and got the reply that it was ok. But it clearly was not... The entrees were put on the table within 5 minutes, the mains immediately after that. Entrees still on the table.... further we were fully ignored. After we finished the main they cleared the table and threw the check on it?!? I have never ever been threated this rude in any restaurant ever. With tears in my eyes we left while our friends came in to enjoy the extend dinner evening... And besides, the place was groise, kady toilet not working, male toilet dirty and sticky ánd the food was quite bad.. the chicken was extremely dry, the spicy dish was not spicy and all courses were mostly sauce with only a few grams of chicken/prawn. The water was warm and there was no coffee or tea. This place is a disgrace and should be avoided, shame on you Taj Mahal!

We had take away from here last weekend and it was honestly one of the best curries I have had in years, taste was great and the consistency of the curry was spot on. I asked if they could do Paneer cheese in the curry instead of vegetables which which they did. Really excellent I will 100% order from the Taj again the next time I am in Campbeltown.

Take away is superb. Munchy boxes are popolar. Nice to sit in.

4 of us went last night, had number 30 a prawn dish, we all agreed this was the best Indian we had ever been to - the food was absolutely amazing and very very reasonably priced. The chef is out of this world, thank you and highly recommended.

We are interested in having an Indian and had already tried the other one in town so gave this one a go. Food was nice, naan was lovely. Atmosphere could be better (place looks a little run down and in need of some tlc). Service was fine, could have been a little quicker getting the bill.

Staff were brilliant food was great

We 3 people have some food before and arrive at around 9. We order two dishes, naan and rice. The waiter is disconnected for ordering not enough. We order 1 bottle of beer, come out for 3.And food is small. Charge us GBP45 for 3 people. That’s terrible experience

Been using the Taj Mahal for years, but was in 2 minds after reading all the bad reviews. Sadly they were generally right. Ordered a take out in person. Told when picking it up that they had run out of onion bhajis. Then found that they had forgotten the rice, the tarka daal was like green water, and generally everything was just a bit disappointing. Sad to say after all these years that we won’t be back.

Staff was rude and collected the dishes before we were done with food, they asked 3x times for cash for no reason and “challenged” some of the group members to force-finish their drinks. Overall completely disappointing experience.

The curries were very good but the pakora starters didn’t come till after the curries and one was inedible! Despite pointing this out we were still billed for it. It was only after confrontation with management that the bill was reduced by half the cost of the inedible starter. We won’t be back due to VERY poor customer service.

An absolute honest review... When we arrived at 8.40 pm there was no one in the restaurant. As we entered the waiter could be heard complaining 'I hope that they know we shut at 10.30'. After initially requesting drinks, it took 3 attempts before this was acknowledged. We asked for 14 poppadoms between 7 of us, and the chutney trays that they brought out were virtually empty. They served 2 of our group. Whilst still eating our chutneys the waiter started leaning over members of our party whilst still on appetisers. No 'excuse me', no 'thank you'... Whilst eating mains the waiter kept asking 'are you done yet?'. I went to the toilet in the last 5 minutes of our visit... when I arrived back the waiter had taken my beer and disposed of it. Quite possibly the worst service from an Indian takeaway that I have ever experienced. Reading reviews it would appear that I'm not the first to feel this... Time to boycott the place. They don't appreciate the custom.

Probably one of the worst Indian resturants ive ever been in. Decor was poor. Lighting was dreadful. Furniture was dated. Too many tables crammed in. Tiolets grim. Mens was out of action. Food was ok. Nothing other than average and the service was reasonable. I wouldnt recommend or return.

Probably the worst takeaway I've ever had. I'd avoid like the plague . Phoned up and told them I was disappointed, he told me to order again and he'd show me how good it can be. Do it right the first time or not at. Also he's so rude avoid.

Had high expectations of this takeaway after speaking local folk. However, floor swept donner did not suffice. I understand that this is freshly cooked to order although seen as the dish arrived in the taxi it could have been from a lot further away. I would urge all hungry individuals to stay hungry as I have seen stray dogs turn their nose up at this. If I could award 0 stars I would! An alternative better method to solve your hunger would be dust off the back of the tv. Failing that dry bread and porridge oats. Stay safe out there soldiers, good luck!

We had really good food following the recommendations of the waiter. Particularly the Naan bread. Lovely music and nice staff. Good to have this place in Campbeltown!

Very bland food bought in pizza dough very disappointing

This restaurant us the only place worth going to in acampbletown. Skye the waitress is world class and has an amazing work ethic and cool sense of humour as well as being very charming. The food and drinks selection is good. See you again soon.

Wonderful. The menu is extensive and has all the classic Indian dishes and amazing chef specials. The restaurant is beautiful and the prices very reasonable. Best Indian experience I have had in a long time. If you are in the area looking for this cuisine you won't find a better meal.

Sorry guys, it was bad. Veggie curry, couldn’t find any veg. Seemed mostly sauce. Popadoms were a bit burnt? Really cheap though. To be fair it is very well priced.

This restaurant is an absolute shambles. 7 of us waited over an hour and a half for any food to reach the table, and even then the food was awful. They were more interested in getting the takeaways out the door than they were of the customers at the tables. One man working front of house, barely understood English, having being asked 3 times for 1 drink I had to point out to him what I was asking for. The service is terrible and the food awful, that is basically the bottom line. Good job it wasn't me paying the bill as I would have told them to take something off due to the appealing service. Never again.

I am not satisfied with this restaurant because front staff misbehaving and talking to me about political issues running in my country. If you pre-order the meal still wasting lots of time that is not worthwhile at all.

Ordered two meals, neither was what it stated on menu, no sauce with Tandoori mixed Grill and no sauce with chicken tikka, had to wait 35 minutes not 20. Poor effort

Disappointed, ordered a 12" munchie box. No pitta, no salad, box was half empty. A handful of Donner meat. The small amount of food we got was of a high quality, but the portion was disappointing. Also ordered some Curry's etc a few weeks ago. Same issue, very small tubs. Naan bread was soggy, popadums stale. Save yourself the disappointment and just go to the Bangladesh tandoori on bolgam street.

Fantastic meal, had starter of prawn purée, king prawn damask as main plain rice, lovely. Not too hot nor bland, not greasy. Very tasty.Wonderful friendly service with lovely views across the harbour.Very relaxed and chilled environment.Good selection of spirits, but ran out of brandy, which would be my only comment. But the king fisher larger went down well.I was here 2 days so was a nice home from home in Darlington.

Worst Indian take away we have ever had. Film of grease over the curries and rice tasted of grease too. Sauce was bland Will never return

Chicken chilli masala was ok as was the pakora but the special fried rice is to be avoided. It's not the ANARKALI but then it was never going to be.

Had food from here last night. Probably one of the worst Indian meals we've had in a long time. If my tandoori chicken had seen a tandoor oven it must have been from a distance. My wife's dish came with sliced banana on top. A new experience for both of us. The closest the nan bread got to India was probably the nearest co-op. Never again. Shame on you.

Highly recommend the Taj Mahal if you are visiting Campbeltown. We had the chicken tikka masala which was delicious. The food was of a high quality and made fresh to order.

Pretty quiet but food was certainly tasty and good quality.

My partner and I are both vegetarians and obviously requested dishes that were vegetarian. However, the waiter misunderstood our request and served us rice with chicken. When we explained the issue and asked to change for a different rice, the waiter not only didn't apologise for his mistake but assumed WE misread the menu and wanted to charge us for it. Very poor attitude, when the rest of the food was actually pretty good. Won't return.

A night right out of Faulty McTowers with a nod to some famous celebs. Food adequate, service comical. Would have been quicker if served by Lord Lucan. Eventually received the bill from Campletown's male equivelnt to Dianne Abbott who 'forgot' to include the Eat Out to Help Out discount. Will not be returning for a new series.

While visiting family we decided to have a meal here, first off I have to say the food was really lovely but what let’s it down in cleanliness and during this pandemic cleanliness is key! Our table cloth has foot stains and the window ledge covered in ring marks from glasses. But what really surprised us was that they didn’t so much as take our name never mind any other details should they need to track and trace!

Wasn’t nice did not enjoy the food ordered a South Indian garlic chilli chicken masala and chicken pakora , the curry was just too watery , pakora had been fried too long which also there was a tiny tiny thin slice of chicken within in the loads of batter. Wouldn’t order from here again waste.

Good food for a good price... Take away 10% discount. Had the bhindi and channa masala and Naan which was nearly authentic. Food was done after 15 minutes... Enjoyed the food outside by eating at the harbor.

Went last night to try again as last time we were very disappointed. Sadly last night was the same. The curry was no better than you can buy in any supermarket curry section. We will not be going back.

Absolutely rubbish, ordered chicken dhansak and it came with only 4 pieces of chicken and the dish had no flavour, I would avoid at all costs and would never recommend to anyone.

In my opinion, one of the best Indian restaurants in Scotland. Always freat food and very reasonable prices too.

We were in Campbeltown for lunch and decided to go in for a curry. It was a really friendly place to eat and the food was delicious and we know it was cooked fresh. They are situated right on the front, overlooking the harbour and they have an extensive menu at reasonable prices. They are fully licensed. We can't wait to go back.

This place overlooks Cambeltown loch - the service is good efficient - the tandoori is good - an extensive menu - so visitors to Campbeltown could give it a try . Service is efficient rather than engaging but it is clean and value for money

We were on vacation and was very happy to see an Indian restaurant at Campbeltown..We had at least one meal a day at this restaurant. Mr. Hassan was really kind to us and gave good warmth. Best Indian restaurant.

We ordered a carryout from the taj in cambelltown service was excellant. The restaurant was well appointed and spottless clean the serving staff were cheerfull and very helpful. The food we recieved was delish and the nan bread fantadtic.

Love this restaurant and the service is amazing , always pop into this place when I'm working in Campbletown and I highly recommend it, I'm from Glasgow and love Indian food - never had such beautiful food

I was a party of 15 people and it was enjoyable from start to finish. The service is first rate and the food was plentiful and delicious. I will certainly be back.

We have visited the Taj Mahal a couple of times now and have enjoyed our experience both times. Food was prompt to appear and was obviously fresh and very tasty. Portion sizes were more than enough and we felt we had value for money. We will be definitely be returning!

This is 1970s throwback stuff and it’s not done that well.

We got a takeaway for 8 of us staying locally. Good Indian food. Friendly staff. We had a drink in the restaurant while waiting and it is a lovely atmosphere. My Madras was nice even though it was the most spicy Madras I had ever had. Thank goodness for poppadoms and mint yoghurt.

I have been avoiding the Taj for a long time. Previously it was very poor in all areas. NOW its much improved. The service was outstanding. The food was presented well and on hot plates. The only minus point would be to say that the spicing was very anglicised and lacked true authenticity - difficult to provide in Scotland perhaps. Nevertheless the food was very acceptable, well cooked and generously portioned.

We have been a few times since the current owners took over and the food has always been freshly cooked an very tasty. Service is also excellent.

We decided to holiday for a week in the Mull of Kintyre and noticed this establishment. Being so remote in Scotland we were sceptical about the standard of food, however our doubts were expelled when our meals arrived (there were 4 of us). Each meal was beautifully cooked and tasty, and each dish was distinctly different (as in some indian restaurants a lot of the curries taste the same). Choice of dishes vast. We ended up going again and the food as good as the last time. Cannot recommend enough.

I have been to this restaurant many times over the years. It has gone through a few changes in that time and has had varying reviews. I would say that now, it is the best it has been. A friend and I went in for a quick meal between cinema showings. The service was excellent - friendly and efficient, and the food was very good. We would like to have spent longer enjoying our meal, so will make sure that next time we visit, we have longer!
