Taj Mahal in Argyll & Bute

Excellent food, generous helpings, spotlessly clean and very pleasant and attentive staff. Only downside is parking but if going after 6:30pm, we can park further down.

Food is Absolutely beautiful, best Indian I’ve had in ages, staff were friendly and made us feel welcome. Will definitely be back when next visiting Oban.

The worst restaurant I have ever experienced Firstly when I came in the staff was in a confused mindset weather to take or not to take us that was the most disgusting and more over when we got in and ordered the food it wasn’t even Indian flavour we ordered a lot stuff but only was saag paneer was good but rest of the stuff was not even cooked properly and then the story began the staff started explaining how it is not cooked so silly I being an Indian suggest not to go in please please not to visit it

We have been many, many times to this Taj Mahal. Not been for a wee while, what a disappointment. Decor and setting is lovely, clean , tidy and inviting. Staff were very pleasant too, although there was a bit on a language barrier. Now the food… Starters of mixed pakora platter with lemon & pepper mayonnaise sauce was nice, enough to share. I’ll break down the main meals here Tandoori Chicken on the bone: NO sauce would be served as it usually is. Trying to explain that there should be a Lentil Sauce fell on deaf ears. A sauce was suggested by the Waiter, however this did not complement the meal. The chicken certainly appeared to never been in a Tandoor oven EVER. It lacked taste and disappointment in general. Launguage problem again, so rice and sauce were charged separately. Coconut Nann Bread, certainly had coconut. When we pulled a piece off, yellow dry coconut flew everywhere. Also gave the appearance of never been insisted. Tandoor Oven. Chicken Tikka Masala. The chicken had been on a skewer but at risk of repeating myself, this I would dispute if it had seen the inside of a Tandoor. The sauce was deep burgundy, no cream or almonds to at least make it look appetising. Drinks. No Draught Beers/Lagers. The lager from a can was flat. Rum & coke. Can’t go wrong there. All in all this was not a nice experience and paying over £60 , we were robbed. On a positive note, the young waiter was attentive, pleasant and tried to help with menu. What a shame he has a poor grasp of English/ Scottish language.

Partner and I just had a nice meal in Taj Mahal. We had poppadoms and spicy onions and a vegetable pakora to share. We then had the chicken tikka masala and rogan Josh. We thoroughly enjoyed the entire meal. The spicy onions were too spicy though, thankfully a cool sauce was also served along with it. We had a naan bread to share - nicest naan bread we’ve ever had. Service was very good and humorous!

Great vegetarian lunch. Best veggo curries I've had in UK so far. The chana curry, sag Dahl, palak paneer, and vegetable paratha were excellent. Friendly male wait staff.

A lovely, inviting restaurant in Oban. My husband and I were on holiday and had chicken dopiaza, lamb bhuna, pilau rice, garlic naan and chips. The food was cooked well and tasted lovely, very authentic. This was as good as our favourite local Indian back home in Fife. If we're ever back in Oban, we'll be sure to return.

Totally band curry with chicken that was obviously left over and reheated chicken tikka. Meat was hard bland and tasteless

Shocking service, cold food and not a care given! Starters came out 10mins apart, took 30mins to clear plates & drinks were hard to get. 2 of 4 mains came out cold, complained and they microwaved them! Not freshly cooked as it says on the website/menu.

This is definitely a little gem and would highly recommend eating there. The staff are polite and helpful. The place is clean and the staff are quick to clear away when people have left. The food is excellent and so tasty , if doesn’t matter if you like milder curries or something a little more spicy. Although not really fitting with the Indian theme we both had a prawn cocktail to start. There was definitely no scrimping on the prawns. The same can be said for the amount of meat in the dishes. The Nan bread was really tasty also. We will definitely be going back again.

It was just okay. Ordered a curry and chef special of Bengali. Not a lot of flavor, definitely not the heat we wanted or expected. We’re two people from Midwest US. It’s not like we’re asking for full on heat. The older server was a bit abrupt even though there were only a few patrons. The young server was attentive and trying hard to please. Food and drinks did come out quickly.

Perfect Indian. While the reviews of the Indian in Fort William weren’t that good, and the first Indian place in Cohan was closed, we tried the new 2. And we did not regret it. Service is good. The staff is more than friendly, and the food is excellent. We had a dinner here with a starter portion of chicken tikka and chapati. And a lamb korma with peshwari naan. We shared a section of poppadums and pickles. Excellent food. Good ambiance and decent pricing. Along with excellent service. What do you wish for? I do know what the Indian served that was closed. But it can't be better than this one. The service really made the difference here. Honestly, the best I have been in a long, long time.

The Taj Mahal in Oban is a very good choice for dinner. The staff were very pleasant and efficient. I was in solo but a table was made up immediately even though it was a busy night and service was attentive. There is very good choice for vegetarians - I really enjoyed the pickles and condiments that came with the poppadoms - the pickles etc were a step above the normal you get. The vegetable korma was nice, with potatoes and green beans amongst other veg. A glass of cold house white wine to wash it down with was very good too. Good value for money - really nice restaurant with natural light flooding in large windows. I really enjoyed it.

I was hesitant from the reviews. Don’t be, the food was delicious, some of the best Indian dishes I’ve ever tasted. Busy, yes so book ahead just like everywhere else in Oban or Scotland for that matter. The Peshwari Naan was exceptional, I called it a pillow of love! I enjoyed it so much I came back my third night. My only regret is I didn’t come the first night in Oban.

Drooped in for dinner while visiting the town of Oban. Fantastic food and service! I ordered Saag Paneer and it was one of the best dishes of Saag Paneer I have had!

My opinion would be to avoid this restaurant .. we went for a meal on 29th June 2023 and the experience was not a pleasant one .. greeted by the manager who was rude and seemed to have little time and manners to customers .. we ordered chicken tikka masala but were given lamb when we informed them they thought it was out fault then checked and confirmed they got it wrong .. we didn't accept a replacement meal .. would advice to look for a better place to eat in the area .. manners were deplorable

Likes it so much went back twice in a row. Everyone thinks the know Indian style food and we’re the same..BUT this was good food ! Large portions so don’t over order. The portions are not skimped or bulked our with cheaper ingredients. The place is light and airy. It looked clean. The staff were polite and appropriately attentive. I’ve no idea how they serve the food as fast as they did. I’m used to waiting much longer to get served. Ive genuinely waited longer at McDonald’s than we waited for our starter ! Well done guys. The prices were good. For the folks thinking it’s expensive../ I’ve no idea how they think this as it’s basically standard Indian restaurant prices! Rice was light and fluffy and good quality long grains. It was just proper good curry! Shame we live so far away or I’d go back. Thanks guys.

Our family are Indian food connoisseurs, and we can’t speak more highly of Taj Mahal, located on George Street, just behind the esplanade. My chicken Madras was cooked just right. Ditto the plain rice, Bombay potato and plain nan bread. Portions were more than plentiful....

A nice meal. Portions too large for us (which is a good thing) Sheekh Kebab, King prawn Madras good as well. Only issue I had ( and have with other Indian / Bengali restaurants) is serving the Kingfisher opened, as it quickly went flat.

Mi novio y yo comimos aquí después de un largo día de viaje. El servicio fue bueno, el personal fue amable y se adhirió bien al protocolo COVID 19. El restaurante estaba tranquilo, así que nos sirvieron rápidamente. Pedimos todo nuestro pedido al mismo tiempo, para poder pastar. El camarero fue muy atento y ofreció mucha información y recomendaciones sobre los platos. Opté por el pato tikka, que venía en una sartén chisporroteante, era para morirse. Nunca he visto pato en un menú indio, pero lo recomiendo encarecidamente. Toda la comida que nos dieron estaba deliciosa. Los baños estaban impecables, al igual que el resto del restaurante.

Reservamos con anticipación, pero nos colocaron en una mesa justo en el camino al lado de un gran grupo de fiestas y una pared que estaba empapada con lo que parecía lodo gris. Entre los dos nos dieron una servilleta que partimos por la mitad para compartir. Pedimos una selección de comida para poder comerla estilo tapas. El curry no estaba a la altura de las expectativas que tenía para la comida. También se equivocaron en nuestro pedido, lo que pensé, bueno, ocurren errores. Luego, cuando nos íbamos, pedí que nos llevaran la comida, ya que pedimos demasiado. Dijo que estaba bien, pero luego, cuando lo pedimos, dijeron que lo habían tirado todo. Se ofreció a hacernos cosas nuevas. lo cual fue amable de su parte, pero el servicio fue tan lento y espantoso que solo quería salir de allí. Ojalá lo hubiera dejado atrás.Nunca he estado antes, y no volveré!Suave, insípido y sin una gota de condimento, y carente de cualquier sabor de especias decente. Biriyani: sin sultanas, sin sabor. Sabía casi lo mismo que el arroz especial que no era tan especial. El cordero, tanto en el Biriyani como en el Rogan Josh, no tenía sabor a especias y sabía a cordero cocido que se había agregado en el último minuto. Contamos 5 trozos de gambas triturados en el King Prawn Rogan Josh, que para 9. 95 no fue genial. ¡Y creo haber detectado trozos de coles de Bruselas en la salsa de curry de verduras servida con el Biriyani! ? La raita de pepino era yogur natural con unas rodajas de pepino, sin ajo, sin hierbas. Se había dividido ligeramente al colocarse encima de platos calientes, dándole una textura viscosa que agrega la falta de sabor dado solo los dos ingredientes. ¡Me preguntaba si realmente había comido comida india de verdad! ?

Hay tres restaurantes indios en Oban, y todos parecían tener buenas críticas. Optamos por el Taj Mahal, ya que era el más cercano a nuestro hotel, y era una noche helada.Al ser un lunes, fue bastante tranquilo cuando llegamos, y durante nuestra visita algunas personas iban y venían.Comenzamos con Poppadums y mi esposo eligió Vegetable Pakoras como su comienzo. Esta fue una porción generosa, y estaban sabrosos, pero también estaban muy grasientos.Para los platos principales, mi marido tenía el pollo Madras con arroz Pilau y Naan llano. Elegí el Akbori Chicken Masala, sin arroz o naan, (como yo tampoco), y compartimos una Raita. La Madras no era como ninguna de las Madras que ninguno de los dos haya visto antes: la salsa parecía una lata de Sopa de Tomate Heinz, y no era tan ardiente o sabrosa como cualquier Madras que también usemos. Aprecio que puede haber diferencias en la forma en que diferentes establecimientos preparan platos, pero esta salsa fue más que una broma, y fue realmente decepcionante.Mi Akbori Chicken Masala, por otro lado, estaba delicioso, lleno de sabor y tenía una consistencia encantadora, aunque realmente hubiera esperado que hubiera más de 5 pedazos pequeños de pollo.Para empeorar las cosas, la Raita era simplemente yogurt; de nuevo, nunca antes habíamos tenido a Raita así. Cada vez que venimos a Oban, el Taj Mahal es imprescindible. Cada plato está lleno de sabor, se sirve rápidamente y nuevamente LLENO de sabor. El servicio fue excelente. Nos preguntaron varias veces si todo estaba bien. Por lo tanto, totalmente recomendado. Tuvimos una muy buena experiencia.

Decided to go for a meal before going to cinema. Perfectly located just round the corner. We did not have a reservation on Saturday and the place was full when we arrive with only one table remaining, which they offered to us. Very nice atmosphere, amazing freshly baked poppadoms with good selection of dips for starter. Great mixed grill and curry. Very helpful waiter and overall the experience was great. Came in early for dinner, restaurant was still pretty quiet but we were not the only table. Service was straight to the point, maybe even a bit grumpy but not bad at all. We decided to start with some pappadums which were served with lovely dips. We both ordered a curry afterwards with a side of rice and a naan bread per person. Portions were very large so this was way too much. Would have appreciated a heads up from the waiter as we could not even finish half of it with the two of us. Rice and naans were good, curry was a bit bland with overwhelming sweetness from the coconut used (not indicated on the menu). Overall a disappointing experience compared to other Indian restaurants we ate at, maybe just a bad menu choice or bad luck though.

One of the best currys I have had in my life, I'd highly recommend it if you are around Oban. Had the spiciest curry ever!

This is a large modern restaurant hiding behind a small frontage at the end of George Street. We found it open early evening after a long day's walk and were welcomed–boots, rucksacks and all.

The food was good. Most dishes I am familiar with, but here are made quite sweet. Best to check with staff to make sure the flavour is what you are wanting. Staff was very friendly and welcoming.

Friendly staff, clean restaurant, lovely food. Much bigger than it looks from the outside - situated just at the endof the main st - so could easiely be missed. The other Indian restaurants all did chinese,pizza etc which put us off so was really pleased we found this place that purly did Indian! We weren't disappointed! Infact we had planned to return again while we were in Obam but ubfortunatly the last night it absolutly poured it down with rain so ended up not going! But would recommend if you are in Oban. It's always a dilemma wether to order something that you like so you can judge how good the food is - or pick something completely different!! We went for favorites & weren't disappointed - when we planned to return we were planning to try something different - so sorry we didn't get back!!!
