We visit this area to dine here multiple times throughout the year, I haven't reviewed for a while and thought it was time. Food is excellent, other than one other Indian restaurant we visit, Taj is by far the best in this area, and for us, beats other Indians we have dined in both in the UK and Europe. Staff are very friendly and service is second to none, everyone's always smiling and nothing is too much trouble. The food is excellent, highly recommend you try the chicken shashlik, chose one of your favorite curry sauces to go with it. You won't be disappointed. If you live or are travelling through this area, haven't visited before and love a great, authentic Indian mean, definitely give it a try.

The only possible criticising of this restaurant is its distance from us. I like a glass of wine and my wife doesn't drive so taxis. But It's well worth it. The naga is my favourite - you need to like a hottish curry and my wife loves the buna. Just go there!

Can't fault this lovely restaurant. Visited regularly pre covid but not been since . went back twice recently. Can only say WOW. Best curry I have ever tasted! Staff were amazing and the food absolutely delicious . I had the prawn sizzler and chicken pathia, my partner had prawn puree and chicken tikka masala we had onion barji and peshawari nan between us., all superb. Staff were attentive and friendly. Cannot complain about anything regarding the quality of the food but meagre portions for the price. Example is chicken pakora starter which I think was £5:30 a portion which basically consisted of 4 chicken nuggets. I had a fish dish that was £15:85 and if you wanted salmon it was an extra £5 £20:85 for salmon really!

Been going to Taj Cottage for years, and I can conclusively say that the quality of food is now mediocre at best. I won't be going back. One meal was particularly dire....chicken tikka. Was barely warm, tough and chewy with no tikka flavour at all. Served on a sizzler ... Trust me, this had never sizzled!! It wasn't eaten, was reported to staff, but nothing was done. Nice people at the Taj, but poor food. Not like it once was.

This was the second time we have eaten in the restaurant (plus 1 takeaway) and expectations were already high following the previous 2 meals we had. Our first visit was on Christmas Eve with a group of 8 of us and everything was faultless. The takeaway was for the same number and again was excellent. On this occasion it was just 2 of us eating in the restaurant. Booking is easy via the website, arrived promptly and seated straight away. Great selection of drinks, Kingfisher, Cobra, Tiger and Peroni (so nice to not see decent lagers!) The food menu is extensive and on each visit we’ve had a different main meal each (always try something different at Indian Restaurants) The service was bang on and the food was and always has been first class. Cannot pick fault at all and would highly recommend.

We had dinner here the other night. Because my partner is totally blind I had to read the menu to her which takes time. We were approached a couple of times and asked if we were ready to order, which we weren't. When we were ready to order I had a bit of trouble attracting the waiter's attention. We had a similar issue at when we wanted to pay at the end of the meal when another customer had to tell the waiter we were trying to attract his attention. Perhaps these issues could be addressed by the waiters being a bit more attentive (but not intrusive). The food itself was very good and tasty, and I look forward to going here again sometime for another meal.

Came for a meal after it was suggested by several people. The service was quick, and I could get seated straight away. Food came out in good time and was delicious. Would like to come again, but hopefully, with someone else as company.

5 of us had a really good table in a warm corner. !it was a chilly night. The staff were attentive and very helpful. Food was hot and delicious.

Nice thick curry, quality pieces of lamb, good pilau rice, tasty poppadom and fruity chutney. Very satisfying thank you! Worth the travel to collect. This is appreciated after being let down so many times with watered down curry and white tastless pilau rice.

Wow everytime I come here I experience a new level of satisfaction, there must be a wizard in the kitchen because this place is magic! Me and my girlfriend shared a starter of chicken pakora and it was cooked beautifully. Then for mains, we had the chicken jalfrezi and the pili pili chicken and wow it was perfect we both loved the complex spices and flavour. Furthermore, the naan breads were perfect and packed with flavour. Our waiter Mamun and he was very good and accommodating for everyone in the restaurant. If you want authentic Indian cuisine then look no further it is the BEST!

Our first time at Taj Cottage and we cannot wait to return. The food was outstanding and the service and atmosphere was so welcoming. I think we’ve found our new local place to unwind. Thank you.

Got take away last night. Ordered a chicken dish. Whilst eating it I noticed that there were pieces of beef in there as well. Very disappointed and the meal ended up in the bin

Found the manager and his father to be abrupt and unwelcoming. Food was good, but service not so good. Staff not observant and you need a plate and cutlery to eat what they bring to the table.

Our August Review Pickle tray very good & different to other restaurants Chicken Pathia- hot and spicy how it should be! Enjoyed it accompanied with a small portion of pilua rice between us and a good tasty nan bread. Price at the top end- but have the prices here and everywhere else creped up due to cost of living crisis? Lovely cottage- contributed to a relaxing atmosphere, service pretty good. only bottles of Cobra/Kingfisher nothing on draught.

Saal and the boys are the most polite guys ever. The food is to die for. The taste of their mix grill with a Madras sauce is amazing.

The last time we visited the Taj Cottage was last November to celebrate a birthday. We dined tonight to celebrate another birthday. We booked a table for three and weren't disappointed. The food and service were as good as always. We were impressed with the standards of hygiene during this pandemic. The tables were 1 metre + apart and all the rooms were able to be used. When one party left in our room, the staff sanitised the chairs and reset the cloths on the table. The waiters wore visors and gloves and served the food from one end of the table. The cutlery and paper napkins were brought out separately as were the plastic menus. The toilets were also in keeping with the hygiene rules. WELL DONE TAJ.

Tried all the indian takeaways in the area except this one as we did not realise they offer a delivery service and glad we did. Far better than Dower House in Bawtry and miles better than the ones in Harworth in my opinion. I went for a Patia dish which was sweet and spicy and my husband had Dahl and was also impressed. Let’s hope the second time is as good as the first.

I’ve had food from here for over a year I’ve recommended it to others , I’d have at least one or two takeaways a week .. but sadly the last 4 times I’ve had a takeaway it’s been real bog standard and no where near worth my hard earned money .. the last 4 times is over a period of several months I’ve given them another chance.. but my work mates tried it and laughed at my poor choice in curry houses .. they usually have a sit in then if it’s nice they’ll order a large takeaway order.. I won’t be going again I drive past taj to go a lot further for a better meal.. sadly the owner told me there’s a chef and a cook maybe I’ve had the cook and not the chef .. if that’s the case the prices should be lowered to suit .. my wife stopped eating there after the first disappointment

Went to the Taj cottage with friends ( four of us in total) no problem parking and was surprised how busy the place was when we went inside. We had a short wait of about 10 minutes to be shown to our table which we had booked in advance. Staff were very polite , but very busy. We ordered our food and the starter came fairly quickly and it was nice. There was a bit of a wait for our table to be cleared but it was obvious that because the restaurant was so busy the staff were working flat out. Mains came and there were plenty of dishes on the table, the food was nicely cooked and we had no complaints there. Wine prices were also reasonable. One thing I would change is the lighting, it was quite bright and the ambiance could be improved if it was a bit more subdued. All in all an enjoyable meal with friends and would visit again. Price per couple came to £64 this was for starters, mains and a bottle of wine. Try it out.

Visited last night to celebrate a friends birthday on the recommendation of a friend who is a regular visitor and also visited with us last night. We were a group of eight sat on a long table. We started by ordering poppadoms and pickle trays. The poppadoms arrived all piled on one plate so we had to pass them down the table so that everyone could get them. We ordered 3 pickle trays so that they could be spread across the table and only 1 arrived followed 5 minutes later by the others! When the main courses arrived all the 4 couples had ordered a portion of rice to share as this is usually enough in other restaurants but here it was really a small portion for one. We had to send 3 of the main courses back as they arrived cold. By the time they were returned the rice was cold but there was no offer to replace. I asked for the rice to be removed from the bill but there was no offer to do this. The couple who vist on a regular basis and also know the manager had to agree that the food and service was not up to standard.

We went new years eve... fantastic. We have been maybe 5 times but this was the best. Love the specials. Try it.

Fantastic all dishes where well tasty. Staff exceptional. 6 blokes and all were well impressed. Menu was big too much too choose. Must go again to try rest.

We were greeted with a pleasant young man and shown to our seats upstairs, it then took 25 mins for them to take our order and get our first drinks, we started with poppadoms which were the worst poppadoms I've ever had (and I've had a few) they were so soft you could bend a rip them, not a good start, my main was the mixed kebab, the onion bhaji was cold and the sheek kebab bland and tastless, our mains came and were all very good, sadly the terrible poppadoms and slow service at the start spoiled it for us unless they learn how to cook poppadoms we'll not be going back, I've given it a poor rating because having been to dozens of Indian restaurants this was below average so it had to be poor.

Went with my wife for a meal on Thursday evening. Not been in for a couple of weeks and discovered that they have changed and uprated the menu. WOW. When the food came it was amazing, this is our favourite Indian in the village anyway but now it has just got better...well done Sal, great job !

We had takeaway for dinner and it was very good. We had Chingri prawns and chicken Marsala tikka with boiled rice.

First visit for some time as it's a little way out of town Absolutely great food; my wife says it's the best chicken bhuna ever. Highly recommended.

Had yet another delicious meal here on Friday night, the food was even more delicious than last time which we didn’t think possible and the service matched. It’s one restaurant where I always look forward to visiting!

We had a meal in this fantastic restaurant on Friday night, the food is always perfect, the staff, the food & the surroundings are great, not a bad word to say about this place, the owner is alway pleasant kind and well mannered but the food is out of this world, don’t take my word for it, just give it a try, I alway recommend booking if you can as it’s always busy especially on a weekend and a lot of time in the week

Fantastic food and service. We arrived and the table we were allocated was near the entrance, we asked to move. This was done without question and efficiently. The service was fast. The food we ordered was superb. Bottle of prosecco too..... great place.

4 of us popped in on the off chance. On a Saturday night as well! They fitted us in luckily, and within 30 mins the place was full. I have read on hear about people waiting a long time but some places let you set the pace of your evening and I think the taj is one of them. You just call them over when your ready. It was a nice chilled out relaxed evening , highly recommended. The food was lovely and so was the presentation.

Recently visited here for the first time. Found both the choice of dishes and the service very good. The food arrived well presented and without much of a wait despite it being a busy Saturday evening. My only niggle was that the poppadoms were soft, suggesting that they were not freshly made. Other than that it was a very enjoyable eating experience and I would certainly go back to this restaurant.

First time at this restaurant. Great place, very friendly staff and reasonable prices (food and drinks). The food was excellent, four dishes all looked and tasted different. The prawn puree starter was fabulous and the Chicken Jalfrezi very nicely spiced.

We eat Indian food most weeks and this place was the worst I’ve been to for a few years. My curry tasted of burnt spices with a really odd and unpleasant thick, paste like sauce. Pickle tray was basic. We went on a Friday night and there were only a few people in. Avoid.

Been twice now and meal was delicious on both occasions, service was really friendly and quite quick to say how extremely busy the restaurant was. Will be returning again in the very near future. Highly recommended.

Visited for a birthday party.. we were told that we could not order starters as they couldn’t cope with large groups so given 1 popadom each. Waited a very long time for a mains (which had been pre ordered). When we finally got the food we then waited 15 minutes for the rice and naan bread by which time the mains were going cold.

Arrived at 19:55 for a table booked for 20:00, shown to table at 20:05. Waiter then came to take drinks order 30 mins later which took a further 20 mins to arrive. Meanwhile ordered food which took over an hour to arrive, luckily we ordered some poppadoms! Food was bought in stages with rice coming about 10 minutes after rest of the food which was getting cold by then. Food was good quality in terms of taste and layout. The menu is also quite nice. Avoid this place unless you have a few hours to kill. They seem to really struggle with groups. The icing on the cake, apparently the card machine broke during the evening so had to pay £500 in cash. I find this terribly convenient on their behalf. Make sure to ask if card machine is working !! The waiters were generally ok but lacked any kind of quality management.

WE called in here for the third time on a night out in Tickhill. Food was excellent as always and as usual I could not finish it all. We will be coming back soon.

We arrived 10 minutes early and ushered straight to a table. Drinks were brought and menus left with us. Our order was taken and the food was delivered in a reasonable time. The food, surroundings and service was good, even if a little more expensive than similar restaurants.

We arrived at 7.10 for a 7.15 booking and ushered straight to the table as if in a rush although restaurant nearly empty,had to ask a couple of times for drinks which finally came and our order taken.At 8.45 I had to ask for our starters which then came within minutes but cold with a very moderate apology,another half hour wait for our main course which 2 out of the 6 were wrong,when the bill came they gave us a voucher for £15 of our next meal!! Needless to say we won’t be using that!!Service was terrible and attitude of the waiters not far behind.Finally left at 10.15 as soon as the meal ended.

We had our wedding at this venue on a Sunday evening, where we privately hired it and had a full reservation as that was our number of guests.

A local Indian I visit quite often. Food is very good but is a little more expensive than other places I go.

We have visited the Taj on a number of occasions and always found the food to be of excellent quality. The staff are pleasant too and they go out of their way to advise you about different dishes. So lucky to have this on our doorstep

This is the best restaurant in the s.yorks area, by far.. I’ve had Indian food in India / Dubai / Nepal and all over the uk so I know a good place when I find one, this is lovely , the staff are warm and friendly.. we are on our fourth visit now, and the standard is the same.. well done taj cottage..... sadly the last 3 visits have been a real let down and we won’t be going again.. I’m not sure if it’s a new chef whose less experienced but it’s really big standard, and I’d manage to eat a free one but would still complain.. sorry taj, I just hope you did better when my friends visited after our recommendations , they’re abroad right now.. 3 bad meals is a no go to us

What a find really is best Indian we've had for years chicken Madras lamb Madras Bombay potatoes Nana bread meat just melts in your mouth lovely staff and management this is going to be our new Indian restaurant from now on menu looks really well as well thanks again

Been here quite a few times and food is always great. Service is sometimes a bit hit & miss but apologies are always forthcoming. Who wants to rush a great meal anyway?

We had expected that a mid-week family evening meal (for 4) would be easy to do without booking. However the first two (nearer to home) venues were shut - with one it's web-site said it should be open (annoying) and the other appeared to have closed down. Our daughter had previously been to Taj Cottage with friends (and liked it) so we kept on travelling and ended up there to be warmly welcomed.

This lndian Restaurant is first class, the food gets even better every time we visit. Every dish tastes different, the quality of food is unsurpassed by anything in the area. Excellent!

Visited about a week ago on a Saturday evening, this place was extremely busy. Exceptional service by all the staff!! As always a warm welcome on arrival. We are regulars and visit all the time, around 3 times a month, food always so beautifully presented, and so tasty. A must visit!!

Nice set up, food not too bad, all sides came in white soup bowls, not attractive. Noticed a few errors, another tables mains came out and their starter plates were still in front of them,another tables popadoms came out and starters came too, now is it me or don't you start with popadoms then go on to starters! Manager speaking to staff telling what needs doing, was out loud in front of customers, maybe needs to be a little more discreet. Been to worse and been to better, but ok for a one off visit.

Arrived a little early for a Birthday Meal x4. We we seated in the upstairs dining area. We got our drinks pretty quick and gave our order, but 50 minutes later we were still sat waiting. I questioned the Waiter about the delay, only to be told it was really busy downstairs (so those upstairs didn't matter?). An hour and 15 minutes later - Still nothing. A further visit downstairs and told the Waiter the wait was unacceptable. I was told on this occasion that our food was on its way. The Manager was present but said nothing. Eventually our Starters arrived, but had to take one back as the Samisas were cold in the middle. Really felt sorry for the young Waiter and Receptionist. They clearly didn't know how to deal with a complaint and neither did the Manager who stood idly by. When we eventually got our meals, the food was good but was spoilt by the 2+ hours wait. I again questioned the wait time only to be told that one of the Chefs had cut his finger. This was reiterated by the Manager when we paid the bill. To his credit, the Manager didn't charge for a round of drinks (x1 wine and x2 1/2's of lager). Throughout the evening, we did hear several other groups complaining. The Manager and Staff obviously did not know how to deal with the situation or complaints. Would have been far better had the situation been explained early doors and something offered as an apology. Communication was all that was needed.

Pre booked table of 20 - Food lovely and presented well, however they don't appear to be able to cope with large bookings. The food was cold by the time they had messed around trying to work out what curry was what and giving all the sides out.

Delicious food, served quickly , friendly staff and clean restaurant. Will be going back! The building is stunning and we were sat in the window. Absolutely fantastic night for my Husbands Birthday meal.

I had poppadoms and pickle whilst choosing my meal which were really nice, not too sure what’s going on with the red sauce with jam through it though? I went for a chant chat poty to start and a chicken chile dish for main, the starter was really nice as was the main. It was a nice relaxing restaurant with attentive waiters. I enjoyed my meal and wouldn’t hesitate to eat there again.

The Taj isn't our normal Indian restaurant of choice in Tickhill but we were glad we made a change. We were presented with the menu that has a very large choice of dishes, some some items that don't appear on many other restaurant menus. The four of us had a range of starters and main courses and there were no complaints from anyone. One of our party does not like spicy food so she choose the Korma. She enjoyed it and so did I when I tasted a piece. Overall a very enjoyable evening.

Spur of the moment visit from us locals. Place was empty at 6:30 but soon started to get busy. Atmosphere. Nice (as in REALLY NICE) food and drink. Generous portions, well cooked, very tasty. I enjoy eating here and have always been well pleased with this place.

We visited the taj cottage to celebrate my mums birthday. The service was poor. A real lack of communication when clearly something was wrong. We were booked in for 7pm. They had no recollection of the reservation despite my mum having received the reservation booking conformation. All started fine.. Given drinks although needed reminding to bring them to the table. Starters came but then no main arrived at the table. My brother questioned this at 8.50 pm, almost 2 hours after sitting. They said the food was coming. 9.20 pm still no food. (2 hours 20 mins later) My brother asked again where the food was. 10 mins later food arrived cold. (2 hours 30 mins) Shame because it tasted nice. However the food was left because it was cold. Also during this long wait for food we were not offered further drinks. On the opposite table a large party sat to celebrate a 40th birthday. I over heard them saying they had waited 1.5 hours for there table which was booked for 7.30. This was at 9 pm. They left at 9.30 when our mains arrived as the staff had not taken orders for food.No one seemed bothered in sorting our concerns out. The manager was supposed to be coming to us at 9.30. When we left we had to ask to speak to the manager again half an hour later. He apologised. No offer of a discount until we pressed for this. Overall a very poor experience. Would not recommend this restaurant to anyone.

I'm sorry to say we must have hit a very bad night.When we got there they did not have our reservation ,I clearly got an email saying they had.There was nine in our party.Started off fine,food wise after starters we had to wait 1 and a half hours,no drinks of any kind on offer.No one came to say they had a problem in kitchen . After asking where food was,they didn't seem to know .When 2nd course did arrive food was barley warm,we was not impressed and asked to see manager who wasn't anywhere to be seen. Table at the back of us left too.

Terrible service. We went for a birthday meal out. We had to wait 2.5 hours between courses and the food was cold. Nobody came to tell us what was happening, and nobody came to take drinks orders. We didn't see the manager once even though we asked to after the first hour and a half of waiting. The table next to us walked out because the service was so bad. Other families/couples were waiting around for hours in the reception area waiting to be seated / waiting for their takeaway. I would not recommend this place to anybody.Don't go here!

We went here last night to celebrate a birthday, when we arrived they had no record of the booking (we did have a confirmation email for a table of 9 ). We arrived at 7pm and from the start the service was just poor and very slow. The food once it was served. Was cold and not worth the wait.. another table at the side of ours got up and left without paying due to the same long waits and poor service. There was no management around, we asked several times to speak with the manager and after an hour wait for him we were presented with a kitchen worker??We will not go back to this place, the whole evening was terrible.. the only thing that was brilliant is that I was surrounded with family.

Lovely surrounding since last visit been modernised. Service very slow no one seems to know what they should be doing. Food average plenty of rice but no meat to eat it with Quickest thing we got was the bill Shall not be going any time soon

My daughter and I had the spicy potatoes and popodoms with dips for starters. We then had Garlic Chicken, Butter Chicken, Boiled Rice and Garlic Nann Bread for our mains. The food and service where all very good.

Had a takeaway from here as the restaurant had been recommended by parents but having young children the takeaway option suited us better. Had 4 main meals,3 rice and 3 peshwaris,was enough to feed 6 of us for £40 and ready in half an hour. The food was beautiful, extremely tasty, our favourite was the garlic chicken curry but couldn't fault any of it. The restaurant is a good 15 minutes drive from our home but the good stayed hot and is well worth the drive for how much it was enjoyed.

Well this was an Indian I had been looking forward to for so.e time as my partners mum had raved about it so much.....Well the welcome and the entrance were outstanding and while waiting and chatting to locals they also thought the world of there Indian restaurant, a much beloved place to eat....We were made very welcome seated and looked after....we ordered the drinks very good...We ordered the good and I loved the fact the waiter described the cuisen as his local food from home....From a curried fish dish to chicken jalfreze and saag aloo/Bhindi bagi all were tasty and very enjoyable ...
