Can only give it one star as zero isn't an option. Battered sausages overcooked and tasteless, chips overcooked and solid. Ruddy awful 1

Have been here every year for the past 5 always beautifully cooked we come at 12 at and everything cooked to order however came last Friday odered 1 mini fish chips and curry sauce portion was half the usual size and cost £11.30 sadly won't be repeating the dish served in was tray approx 3in by 3in would have thought they could give a few more chips or that price not impressed

Absolutely gorgeous fish and chips! Worth the wait whilst it’s cooked freshly. The staff are really lovely, so friendly We were in Devon for one week and went there twice, it was that good

Waited in a queue outside for 1hr 20 mins for mediocrity at its finest Inefficient way of producing food And disappointing once received small portions and dreadful over cooked chips £3.90 for a large portion of chips which was more like a cone portion £7.00 for a piece of cod that would have been called a fish bite or mini fish at most places

I’m not lying when I say Long queue, small shop with a limited menu. No parking. Should definitely go to some other chip shop in Westwood Ho or Bideford. Mainly as I want this little gem for myself. Best fish had in a very long time. !! Well done ladies that’s superb:)

Absolutely amazing fish and chips. Delightful staff who are warm, friendly and welcoming. Their food is amazing. We always pay cash to make sure they do not lose money on bank transfer charges as they are a small business. Our go to chippy since we have moved. Thank you guys for making us feel welcome!!

We both had takeaway cod and chips. We can honestly say they were without a doubt the BEST EVER we have ever tasted. Beautiful light and crispy batter with no greasiness. Moist skinless fish. Chips that would shame the best restaurants - so crispy and delicious. Cannot sing Sylvester’s praises high enough!

Best chips I've had in years - popped in next morning to say so. It was a busy Friday night, so there were two very orderly queues outside, waiting to order and waiting to pick up.

Superb clean facility and the cod was fresh and my meal was cooked to order. I took it to the Champ next door (who encourage such activity) and had an excellent pint with them. Most clients at 19.30 on a damp Thursday night in February had had the same idea.

Had a fabulous cod and chip takeaway here, freshly and perfectly cooked. Enjoyed it on the seats on the seafront. Highly recommended.

A pretty good chip shop. It's only very small so you have to order and then wait outside for your name to be called. The fish is delicious with a nice crispy battery. The chips are OK but many are very crunchy/crispy which for some members of family they really like that, I prefer them more soft and fluffy inside. The staff were welcoming and friendly. Personally, less salt on the chips as there was way too much and you can't put it on yourself. We took out chips home as it started raining but nice to have overlooking the sea.

We came here due to people recommending this chip shop and I have heard great reviews, but I am not sure how. The chips are the worse chips we have ever eaten, they are cooked in weird tasting oil which is all I could taste with a oven chip texture, extremely disappointed.

Well we are staying locally for a week so will be trying all of the food/ restaurants that this fantastic little gem as to offer and this was one of them - the whole episode was lovely from queuing outside listening to the seagulls and taking in the sea air the lovely manners of the you d lady serving then topped off with the best fish and chips i have had since a kid and i’m 56 they were beautiful thank you for making the whole experience a memorable one a little gem in an amazing village thank you

A complete joke of a fish and chip shop. Lazy slow service like I have never seen anywhere in a take away environment. People left standing outside in their droves in the rain to queue to order, and even longer to get served. How long can fish and chips take? A truly dreadful experience, which for me will never be repeated.

Excellent fish and chips and really nice friendly service. They do Gluten free options which is fab!! Very reasonable prices and good quality. So glad we tried this place whilst on holiday. We ate our chips on a bench overlooking the sea. What more could you ask for. Wish we had a chip shop like this in our home town in the midlands. Will definitely be back there when we visit north Devon again.

We almost found this by accident after wandering around the streets of Appledore, and we were so glad we did. A long queue of locals was a good sign, and the wait as our meal which was cooked to order, was well worth it. Lovely fish, tasty sausages and, I would have to say, potentially the best chip shop chips I've ever had.

This small little chippy in the village of Appledore came with fabulous reviews on trip advisor which was why we chose a takeaway from here. It is very small with (certainly while we were there) food cooked to order. Really friendly owner/member of staff who as we we’re staying in the area, gave us plenty of ideas of places to visit. Trip advisor reviews were not wrong a fabulous chippy with lovely crunchy chips & fish with a lovely crispy batter & not oily or greasy. Fabulous.

Staying in the area and was told by a local that this place was the best fish and chips in the area. If this is the best I’d hate to try the worst. Bland, greasy over cooked chips. Portions were small and expensive. We arrived just before the opening time along with some other customers. We were all waiting patiently, but the owner seemed offended that customers were waiting, complaining that he would leave the closed sign on all night because no one takes any notice of it. I think this is a business trading on past reputation. If your in the area and fancy fish and chips then go elsewhere.

Absolutely dreadful. Wet overcooked fish - dry and rubbery and barely edible. The batter was completely inedible as it was so overcooked it’s was impossible to chew. Worst ever

Only difference in the 2 chip shops is this one cooks in veg oil and the other in beef dripping. We ate from this one fish and chips were very good, light batter and firm fish, chips as they should be !

Yup, that's right! GF fish and chips available at the till when you place your order. The fish is dusted in rice flour instead of being battered. The chips are out of this world. Visited thrice in a week, enjoyed my first GF fish and chips in years! Friendly service :)Thank you, Sylvester's!

The quality and amount of the fish , along with crispy , not soggy , chips made this the most memorable meal in Appledore.

We visited the chippy on our last night and purchased fish and chips which were outstanding, thankfully when we visited the queue wasn’t as long as we had observed the rest of the week. Friendly staff who are dealing with the COVID restrictions really well.

We call in here whenever we are in the area.First Covid - good queuing system up the street and one customer to order at a time. Screens in place. You are called in one at a time to collect your order.The cod is fresh and well cooked. Excellent flavour and moist. The batter is crisp. Chips are well cooked. We like to take ours to the quayside to eat.Would highly recommend (wish we were more local)!Would also recommend the chocolates from the shop opposite!

Had been looking forward all day to fish and chips and was left disappointed. The fish was thin, grey and greasy and the chips were also soaked in grease and not fresh. Not the best

The better of the two fish and chip shops but they're not chip shop style chips and are obviously frozen but they taste nice. The haddock is also frozen and was very thin and small. Not like the haddock we are used to. The cod was nice.

The best fish and chips in the area! Myself and my partner will always travel to Appledore to get our fish and chips because you cant beat it! The fish is freshly cooked and the chips are tasty! The service has always been fantastic with friendly staff who are always smiling!

While alas a fact of life, the amount of racism in some rural communities in the year 2020 still disappoints me, especially when it’s shown in public before customers. While waiting as a visitor for my fish and chips to be cooked, the (white, British) fryer engaged in some local “banter” with a local resident he apparently knew, using a fake Indian / Pakistani accent in a pejorative way. Please don’t assume that because I’m a 50-something white British male I’ll find that acceptable or amusing as a customer; it may have seemed OK to you in a 70s TV sitcom maybe, but today I can’t see it as anything but racist.The fish and chips were cooked fresh at an average price with an average taste. But even if they had been the best I’d ever tasted (which they were not), I’d not go back as I prefer to pay for food cooked by someone who’s respectful to all people irrespective of their heritage, even behind their backs.

We regularly visit North Devon on holiday and come rain or shine will make a point of visiting Sylvesters for what we consider to be the best fish (or sausage!) and chips ever. All cooked fresh to order, lovely crisp batter and perfectly done. This tiny little hidden gem deserves to be shouted about. Appledore itself is a nice village to visit, with its lifeboat station at the far end. If you're here March to October you might just catch the legendary Hockings ice cream van on the quayside (almost outside Sylvester's) for the perfect finish to the perfect seaside meal!

We always intended to eat early and did so in The Champ next door who sanction it with an accompanying drink. The haddock and fishcake were good as were the excellent chips. All food was fried to order and the male fryer had it all under control.

We come to Appledore every year in the summer, and always make sure to have fish and chips at least once. Sylvesters is definitely back up as the best fish and chips in the village. Cod cooked fresh, chips piping hot and not soggy with queues round the block for this Appledorian institution. Will be back again next year!

Sadly we were disappointed with the food. After queuing for 20mins and paying just over £16 for what we thought were small fish chips and peas. Over priced Dry fish Chips not the best Due to the high expectations sadly we were disappointed.

Came here for an Easter break with baby, granny and grandad and went here based on reviews as the best in appledore. Wow, were we dissapointed. Firstly we waited in the queue for nearly an hour to be served, secondly the chips were not hand cut and were simply frozen school dinner style chips and finally and worst of all the fish was clearly frozen (shocking for a chippy in view of the coast). All of this was compounds by the fact that it was expensive and the portions sizes were stingy given the price tag.

We can't pass Appledore without a visit to this lovely small fig and chip shop. Quality products, nicely priced and above all: service with a big smile. Clean and tidy, just the way we like it too. We will be back!!!!

Being from Grimsby area with Haddock and chips £2:50 I did not like the pricing but fish was nicely cooked chips not too sure about .I would go for the fish and get chips elsewhere

Have visited Sylvesters a few times as they serve gluten free cod daily. Made the mistake of going in when the owner was away and someone else was frying. My portion of gluten free cod wasn't big enough to feed a small child, a tail end, dry and inedible. And the chips weren't great either. Couldn't believe how much I'd been charged for this pap and how they had the nerve to serve it. Will not be wasting money there again.

Really fresh. Chips were delicious, fish was gorgeous. The dog loved his fish titbits, he couldn't believe his luck.

We had fish and chips at sylvdsters on Easter Friday early evening and we did have to wait nearly an hour but well worth the wait it was fantastic.

Everytime i eat here i am always amazed by the foods. From the chips to fish to chicken nuggets everything is so perfect! And they make a great cuppa too of you dont fancy a cold drink. Very nice staff too always friendly.
