We stayed here for 2 nights and I cannot recommend this place highly enough. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming. The rooms are large, bright with some spectacular views and those special touches such as little toiletries for your use. The bath in our room was so opulent I could have stayed in there all evening. The dining area is quite niche you can have quiet discreet corners for a romantic evening or more open. The food is excellent- if I had 1 thing to say that was negative, it would be that I wouldn’t have a starter so I could have a dessert, I found each time I did I just didn’t have room to have one! The main thing for me was the staff. The staff quite simply made it for me. NOTHING was too much trouble, they were friendly, welcoming and went above and beyond , yet at the same time let us be. If you want somewhere, where you can be comfortable, away from it all and have excellent accommodation and food this is the place.

Fantastic hidden gem. We stayed over for a two night stay and we can’t wait to go back. Food is excellent, in fact the only thing I would say is next time I will go without a starter so I can try a dessert! Staff cannot do enough for you, warm, welcoming and nothing is too much. The atmosphere is pleasant and the way the dinning rooms are laid out is great it can be intimate or it can be more involved. Rooms are clean, spacious and the facilities are all there the baths are large and spacious as are the shower cubicles - if you want a place to stay I would HIGHLY recommend the Swinside inn

Fantastic find today for lunch in the sunshine with spectacular views. We chose seabass, fish & chips & steak & frites - all of which were amazing & we will be back. The new owners have done a brilliant refurbishment. Staff were lovely & helpful & food was to a high standard. Hesitant to write a review in case it becomes so popular we can't get a table next time!

As an American, I've not had fish and chips all that often but I know my way around fried food. I had the dish a few times while in England, and the fish and chips I had here was THE BEST I've had in my entire life, hands down. If you're in the area, definitely worth a stop!

We have been coming to the Swinside Inn since 2015 and have always sung its praises but we came again after the refurbishment and it seemed to have lost something. The refurbishment is great and it looks smart but the Sunday roast we had was way below its previous standard. It was also more expensive than I think the quality of the food justified and the additional costs were sides were ridiculous! £5 for a small bowl of carrots and broccoli isn’t acceptable. This experience has tarnished our otherwise high opinion of the venue having previously recommended it to countless others. Not sure we will go back 😢

Attended the 10 in 10 and was so impressed with the place so decided to pop in after a days walking. We sat in the beer garden ordered drinks and pizza all was well until the inappropriate music started. Very load gangster rap including all expletives. Not great when you have both older relatives and young children. Not really what we expected. Hopefully just a slip up that won’t happen again.

Came back here after reopening as we always liked a Sunday dinner here but we were extremely disappointed, I had the beef dinner and the beef was thin fatty sliced, my wife and daughter had the chicken which was tasteless, and this was served with two roasties, two pieces of carrot and a little broccoli with not much gravy, all for the sum of £22, absolutely disgusting value for money a total rip off, would never return here for a Sunday dinner. RIP off .

Stayed at this fabulous pub for the weekend and ate all our meals there. The new owners have gone to a lot of trouble and expense to refurbish and reopen this Inn with great taste and different spaces to suit different needs. The food was amazing, particularly the fresh fish specials and well priced. The staff are friendly and charming even when under pressure. They are a new young team with the pub only having been open for a month so inevitably there will be a few teething troubles and learning. There is always a balance to strike in maintaining quality, meeting demand and satisfying different types of clientele and I am confident they will achieve that near impossible aim. Our room was nicely appointed, quiet and comfortable with lovely toiletries and thoughtful touches. I am already looking forward to my return visit in September Advisable to book if you wish to eat as it is already very popular.

Stayed overnight, had dinner and breakfast. Dreadful, incompetent staff , food cold at both meals. Limited menu nothing like website. Breakfast an absolute disaster, took over an hour and a quarter to serve, all orders badly cooked and cold. Also not given all the items but been there too long to send back. Ruined my granddaughter’s birthday . Whole place really cold and bedroom dirty, cobwebs like Miss Haversham.

Came in here off trail from the cumbria way...3 miles it seemed but I wanted a beer and to be out of the rain. Very small bar area and the girl behind the bar was doing her best. Wasn't busy at the bar. You're main man who was apparently on the bar had to get passed me but chose 'mind your back' instead of excuse me. I had a full 20k pack on. He then preceded to serve out of turn several times and incredibly slowly! Hit the point where I left without spending any money at all. Never ever have I left a review but I've been in the pub trade for 34 years and you have a beautiful pub but I left without spending a penny..I even walked away 3 times and left my pack outside to give him a chance and came back yet still overlooked...rather than serve ...and literally just me so one pint...he put 2 trays of glasses away and then ignored me for a chap who didn't know his table number.

Booked a table arrived before alloted time. Heard there was a 40 minute wait for food when approached a member of staff they assured us the eait should not be this long. We received our meal 90 minutes after ordering. We asked what was happening along with others after an hour. We were given drinks on the house for our wait. When the dinner arrived I had spoonful of mash, 1 roast potatoe, 1 parsnip and 2 carrots, asked fot more mash and roast potatoes that were brought over. It was not the waiting on staffs fault.

Could therefore only order a basic wall-mounted menu. Why such a ludicrous restriction? Wooden knives and forks. Filthy glasses served. No pepper mill available - was given white pepper - “that’s all we have….” Poo bags & general waste around outside seating area & dilapidated pizza oven.

Friendly pub in a beautiful valley, really disappointing food!! My Cumberland sausage (large) was two normal sized sausages and a small helping of mash with the worst watery gravey !! Really disappointing, others meals looked on the small sized - you come to a lakes pub to and expect large hearty meals especially at the price charged - obviously ripping off the tourists. Pity

Great little pub for a snack while out on a walk, food was lovely but overpriced... £7 for 2 fish fingers on a greasy brioche bap. Sandwiches were better value. Nice selection of ales. Lovely open fire.

I stopped here for a pot of tea during a walk on New Year's day. It is cosy and a bit quirky and located in beautiful countryside. It is somewhere you could visit after a walk by Derwentwater or after climbing Catbells.

Great location off the main grid so very peaceful beautiful old pub with great rooms and beautiful walking trails close to the hotel. Cosy eating areas with log fires. Food was great extensive menu and the owners and staff are extremely helpful. Really enjoyed the dog friendly attitude makes for a very happy community atmosphere. Love Milo For a couple of Aussies this was fantastic to stay in such an old inn with great food and views and a great area to visit.

We are here on a Friday and Saturday night. The food was plentiful and tasty. There were good options for vegetarians and vegans. Service was friendly and well organised. The beer was good. It's a popular place on a Saturday night so do book.

Planned a walk from Borrowdale with the Swinside Inn being at the halfway point. Friendly staff, warm and cosy place with a roaring log fire, excellent local real ales (tried two and they were perfectly kept), great butties by the fire. All that we had hoped for. Would be a great base for walking, too. Checked the rates and may well be back. Perfect.

My wife and I went for a trip to Lowther Castle and Gardens with the in-laws, and after such awful weather we decided to travel to Cockermouth to treat ourselves to the excellent Fredricks which we've visited many times before. We started with the seafood platter / selection with a portion of chips for the young one. It's a great selection of items for fish lovers! After, we ordered some lovely main dishes, enough for 3 adults and 2 kids (1 kids meal of pizza and chips!) Lovely meal to end of evening. Will be back when next in the area.

My friend and I called in here whilst in Wigton and had a bacon buttie and a barista butties both of which were delicious and cooked perfectly. I had a latte which was lovely and my friendcsaid her cappuccino was one if the vest she'd had. The staff were so helpful and friendly and we will definitely return.

Sad to say that our trip there was a a big disappointment when it come to the food. We all had beef, it was dry and chewy. When we talked to the waiter, we have been told that is the way the chef does it. It is a shame that they only sell well done cuts of meat...

Since discovering this little gem we no longer visit the area without popping in. The chocolate twists are generously sized, nice and buttery, and the coffee is divine. The staff are more than happy to cater to all my awkward needs and questions with a smile - nothing is too much trouble!
